Passage 01
(22-23高一下·江苏扬州·期中)Several years ago, when I was an English professor, I asked my students to finish a paper during the holiday. David, one of my students, came to class without it. He explained that his safe (保险柜) had been stolen by a worker who was repairing his house. His notebook computer was in the safe, where his paper was. I was sure that he didn’t tell a lie because he had been a really good student.
Then over the following two weeks, David started to show up to class looking very tired. He said that he was on a hunt for the guy who stole his safe, and he was spending late nights with his cousin driving around looking for the thief because they knew his car. They wanted to find the thief and get the safe back because his living expenses were in it besides the paper.
Afterwards, David rewrote the paper and turned it in. It wasn’t up to his usual quality, and he still kept coming to class looking like he hadn’t slept all night. One day, he came very happily to my office, and he reported that he had found the thief after a long search that involved experiencing dangerous situations. He said that they found the thief’s car in front of a big supermarket, and they caught him and sent him to the police station.
I read the news that David had in fact put an end to the thief’s attempt to steal from the supermarket. It turned out that David got his money and notebook computer back. I gladly accepted his original paper, and it got a much higher grade than the rewritten one because of his virtues. And I reminded him that he should be responsible for his own safety and talk to me or other teachers first if he met with anything like that.

A.He tried his best to earn his living expenses.
B.He went late to the class that the professor taught.

3.What happened to the thief finally?
A.He voluntarily admitted the theft.
B.He was reported caught by the professor.
C.He escaped from a big supermarket.
D.He was handed over to the police.
4.Which words best describe David?
A.Smart but lazy. B.Imaginative and creative.

Passage 02
(22-23高一下·四川眉山·期中)For most people, the thought of having to watch themselves work out is not an attractive one. Yet as any gym-goer knows, there are always some people who like to enjoy their reflection in the floor-length mirrors. It is perhaps these particular keep-fit lovers who are most excited about the latest trend in home exercise-smart fitness mirrors.
These are 180cm or so tall, high-tech mirrors that have a computer which is connected to the Internet, and also work as a video screen. The idea is that people contact an online trainer, who then appears in the mirror along with their reflection.
On the more advanced devices the mirror is equipped with cameras, speakers and numerous sensors connected to AI, so the trainer can watch people’s movements, and provide improvements and changes. On the simpler mirrors the video and sound are just one-way — people can see and hear the trainer, but not the other way around. Lessons are typically not live; instead, people just get into a library of online workout videos.
But is there any actual advantage in being able to watch yourself work out? Colleen Logan, the US owner of both Nordic Track and ProForm, says, “Seeing themselves in the mirror allows the users to correct their form or position, so they get the best possible benefits of strength exercises and reduce mistakes that could lead to injuries” .
However, Dr Anthony Papathomas, a sports and fitness psychologist says there is value to this argument, but that he also has some concerns. He said, “How people who are not confident about their body image feel about the mirror gets me in a fret. It may be a problem for those new to exercise and looking to make a lifestyle change. Even for regular exercisers, there are many who experience body dysmorphia (变形) or eating disorders, and for them, seeing a reflection throughout their exercise might be troubling.”
1.What does paragraph 2 mainly tell us about smart fitness mirrors?
A.Their target users. B.Their basic functions.
C.Their wide popularity. D.Their complex structure.
2.What can be the benefit for exercisers from simpler fitness mirrors?
A.Having live workout lessons. B.Exercising with other partners.
C.Learning from some trainers at once. D.Taking advantage of workout videos.
3.What does Logan think of the mirror?
A.It makes mistakes sometimes. B.It could bring injuries to its users.
C.It helps users exercise more properly. D.It can’t be used for strength exercises.
4.Which one is the best title?
A.Fitness Mirror: Good or Bad. B.A Good Helper: Fitness Mirror.
C.Home Exercise is Coming. D.The Trend of Fitness Mirror.
Passage 03
(23-24高一下·安徽黄山·期中)The subtitle of my 1995 book Emotional Intelligence (EI) reads, “Why It Can Matter More Than IQ.” That subtitle, unfortunately, has led to misunderstandings of what I actually say. Some people even make the absurd claim that “EI accounts for 80 percent of success.”
I was reminded this again when looking through comments on an Australian study that fails to find much of a connection between teenagers’ level of emotional intelligence and their academic achievements. For me, there’s no surprise here. But for those misguided people who think I claim EI matters more than IQ for academic achievement, it would be a “Gotcha!” moment.
My argument is actually that emotional and social skills give people advantages in areas where such abilities make the most difference, like love and leadership. EI does better than IQ in “soft” areas, where intelligence matters relatively little for success. That said, another such area where EI matters more than IQ is in performance at work, when comparing people with roughly the same educational backgrounds like MBAs or accountants.
IQ is a much stronger predictor than EI of which jobs or professions people can enter. However, having enough intelligence to hold a given job does not by itself predict whether one will be a star performer or rise to management or leadership positions in one’s field. In part this is because everyone at the top level of a given profession has already been examined for intelligence. At those top levels a high IQ becomes a basic ability, one needed just to get into and stay in the game.
The one place I expect we will be seeing more data showing a relationship between skills in the emotional and social area and school performance will be in studies of children who have gone through social/emotional learning (SEL) programs. These courses give students the self-management skills they need to learn better. And so to the degree that advantage promotes learning, they should do better on academic achievement scores. A study from the University of Illinois finds around a 10 percent increase in achievement test scores among these students. Probably, the SEL programs would also have meant higher scores on the particular assessment of EI used in the Australian study, and so if they had tested such children, there may well have been a positive connection.
So learning seems to be another area where EI may matter—whether more than IQ is a question based on experience.
1.The author writes the passage to ________.
A.state his new opinion on IQ and EI
B.explain the importance of IQ and EI
C.clear up some misreading of his book
D.argue for his study into school learning
2.According to the author, EI matters more than IQ for ________.
A.family relations; being promoted at work
B.being a leader; receiving an MBA degree
C.winning a quiz; becoming a star performer
D.becoming an accountant; getting an interview
3.The author might agree that ________.
A.intelligence matters greatly for success
B.the subtitle of his book is easily misunderstood
C.EI matters more than IQ for academic achievement
D.IQ determines one’s basic ability to enter a certain field
4.We can learn from Paragraph 5 that ________.
A.the two same studies have opposite findings
B.the SEL programs improve students' scores rapidly
C.students’ school performance is decided by their EI
D.the SEL programs attempt to promote learning with EI

(23-24高一下·湖南邵阳·期中)I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job. I also think my work is important. There was a time when I thought I would never have that sort of career.
I wasn’t an excellent student, because I didn’t do much schoolwork. In my final term, I started thinking what I might do and found I didn’t have much to offer. I just accepted that I wasn’t the type to have a career.
I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls. It wasn’t too bad at first. But the problems began when I agreed to live in, so that I would be there if my boss had to go out for business in the evening. We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she’d give me time off the next. But unfortunately, it didn’t often work out. I was getting extremely tired and fed up, because I had too many late nights and early mornings with the children.
One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me. I told her about my situation. She suggested that I should do a course and get a qualification (资格证书) if I wanted to work with children. I didn’t think I would be accepted, because I didn’t take many exams in school. She persuaded me to phone the local college and they were really helpful. My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part-time course. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.

Passage 06
(23-24高一下·山东德州·阶段练习)When people think about improving their physical fitness, they often neglect (忽视) balance. Good balance is a necessary part of being physically fit and key to living a long life, according to research. It’s important for everyone, no matter your age.
Older adults are most affected by poor balance. Falls are the leading cause of injury and death for those 65 and older, with nearly 30% in this age group reporting at least one fall in 2018, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But younger adults frequently fall down, too.
Forty-eight percent of young adults reported falling at least once during one 16-week study. The falls most commonly happened during sports activities, with women in the study reporting more falls and fall-related injuries than men.
Falls within the previous two years were reported by 18% of young adults (ages 20 to 45) in another study published in the journal BMC Public Health. That figure (数据) compared with 21% of middle-aged adults (46 to 65) reporting falls and 35% of those over 65. While falls among young adults were often connected with sports, falls by the middle-aged group were typically related to health problems and physical changes.
Many factors (因素) can affect your balance outside of age, such as vision changes, brain injuries, overweight and a general lack of physical fitness. Even if you have no risk factors, simply neglecting to work regularly on your balance will result in increased instability (不稳定性).
“Our body is conditioned to lose what we don’t regularly use and practice, and balance is no different,” said Susan Baxter.
1.What role does a good balance play in our lives?
A.It helps us live a healthy and long life.
B.It enables us to build a perfect shape.
C.It protects us from getting seriously sick.
D.It has the power to make us look young.
2.How does the author show the research results?
A.By having a discussion. B.By following the time order.
C.By raising questions. D.By giving a list of figures.
3.In which situation are young adults likely to fall down?
A.When a health problem comes up. B.When working regularly.
C.When a physical change appears. D.When joining in a sport.
4.What can we learn from what Susan Baxter said?
A.We’ll lose our balance if we don’t practise it often.
B.Our body is used to working in its own way.
C.We should manage our body properly.
D.We are naturally born with balance.
Passage 07
(22-23高一下·四川眉山·期中)There was once a boy called Mario who loved to have a lot of friends at school. However, he wasn’t sure whether or not his schoolmates were his real friends, so he asked his grandpa for help. The old man told him, “I just have what you exactly need, and it’s in the attic. Wait a minute here.”
Grandpa left, soon returning as though carrying something in his hand, but Mario could see nothing there.
“Take it. It’s a very special chair. It’s rather tricky to sit on for it’s invisible, but if you take it to school and manage to sit on it, you’ll be able to tell who your real friends are,” Grandpa said.
Mario was curious to know whether it was true or not, so he took the strange invisible chair and set off for school. At break time, he asked his classmates to form a circle, and then he put himself inside, with his chair. “Nobody moves! You’re about to see something amazing.”

Passage 08
(22-23高一下·广东揭阳·期中)After bikes and umbrellas are made sharable across China, some companies started to focus on the fitness market, so shared gym rooms have hit the streets in Beijing.
Unlike common gyms that provide large, open spaces for many members to share at the same time, the newly built shared gym rooms are small, separate rooms for only a person to use at a time, often set up near living communities.
Every four-square-meter room provides a treadmill (跑步机), an air cleaner, a mirror, a television and an air conditioner, and users can let down the curtains (窗帘) for privacy. When exercising, users can listen to music, watch movies and check emails by connecting to the Internet by the screen fixed on the treadmill. But there’s no shower.
Similar to using a shared bike, users can locate a shared gym room by a smartphone app, book a room in advance and then need to scan a QR code for use. A refundable deposit (保证金) of 99 yuan is required, and users are charged 1 yuan every 5 minutes.
The shared gym rooms are created by Misspao, a Beijing-based technology company founded in July. Within several months since it was founded, the company has already raised over 100 million yuan. However, the idea of the shared fitness experience is not totally nascent. Last December, the company VRUN set up shared treadmills in office and apartment buildings.
The sharing economy is still becoming popular in China. According to Yicai Global, confident people are pouring millions into sharing start-ups. In March, the State Information Center published a report which predicts that the total value of China’s sharing economy will see a yearly growth of 40% in the coming years, and it is expected to make a great contribution to the country’s GDP.

(23-24高一下·湖南长沙·阶段练习)Kevin Beard is my class instructor. I was shocked when I arrived one day to find him standing in front of the room telling a story, with tears streaming down his cheeks. I was worried something had gone terribly wrong in his life, but as I listened to him talk, I heard him use words like “amazing” and “accomplishment.” I realized his tears weren’t out of sorrow, but happiness. Just a few days earlier, he’d received his GED (General Equivalency Diploma), at the age of 52.
Having dyslexia (阅读障碍), Kevin left school at a young age and then managed to support himself by taking odd jobs. In his mid-30s, Kevin finally landed an opportunity for a job with some promise: working for a sheriff’s department (治安部门). Amazingly, when he came clean with them about his education, they said they’d hire him as long as he got his GED.He agreed, optimistic about this new career potential, and kind of excited about giving school another chance.
Kevin studied with a tutor, and he did it for more than a decade, learning and practicing and correcting his mistakes, every free moment he had, often late into the night. It was a huge challenge, something Kevin compares to “climbing a mountain.” In fact, as Kevin took tests along the way, he did something interesting with each of his results. He posted them on his bedroom wall so that he could watch his progress. “I needed to see myself moving forward, and I wanted to speak, ” he said.
Finally, he made it. “I can’t really describe what it’s like to finally achieve this,” he said. “I can hardly even put it into words. People are giving me graduation gifts! It’s a dream come true.”
This might sound like a perfect ending. But for Kevin, it’s a new beginning. He’s on a roll, and his next step is college. “Now that I’ve accomplished my GED, I’m hungry for education,” he said.

Passage 10
(23-24高一下·湖南邵阳·期中)About ten years ago, I taught a group of children to sail. They were bright, enthusiastic and as eager to enjoy life as other children. All, however, had a serious disability. Three were in wheelchairs, one was nearly blind and two were able to walk with difficulty.
Matthew was one of them. He had cerebral palsy (脑瘫). His hands and arms were both deformed (变得畸形). His back was bent and his legs did not work. To speak, Matthew had the help of a letter board. Slowly, he would point out with his hands, letter by letter, what he wanted to say. Sometimes he would try to talk. Yet he was always bright and cheerful and loved to try everything his classmates were doing, both in the boat and in the classroom.
One day the sailing centre was attacked by a storm. We decided to work in a classroom. All the children joined in. Just like other children, they all wanted to answer the questions I asked. But when Mattew wnted to answer a question, all of a sudden they all kept silent. Matthew whispered and pointed slowly at the letter board. They waited quietly. Matthew struggled with great effort until the answer was spelled out. When I did not understand, one of the other children would work with him until the answer was clear.

Passage 11
(22-23高一下·四川成都·阶段练习)Erin Jackson wasn’t going to miss a chance at Olympic gold if her teammate could do anything about it.
Jackson, the world’s top ranked woman in the 500 meter event for speed skating, slipped (滑倒) during U. S. Olympic trials in Milwaukee — costing her one of two spots in Beijing.
Those prized spots went to the winner of the event, Brittany Bowe, and the second- place finisher Kimi Goetz.
Jackson, who came in third, looked liked she was going to miss her likely final trip to the Olympics after competing in Pyeongchang in 2018.
Missing the competition would’ve been a shock, as Jackson is the top-ranked skater in this event, according to ESPN. In November, she became the first Black woman to win a World Cup event in speed skating.
So, Bowe decided to step in.
Bowe, who is heading to her third Olympics, decided to give up her qualifying spot, which opened up an opportunity for Jackson to take her place in Beijing.
“Erin has earned her right to be on this 500 meter team,” Bowe told NBC. “She is ranked number one in the world and no one is more deserving than her to get an opportunity to bring Team USA home a medal.”
Jackson, who calls Bowe a long- time friend and mentor, said she was “beyond grateful and humbled.”
Bowe and Jackson both grew up in Ocala, Fla. where they each started their inline skating careers. They both eventually switched to skating on ice.
Bowe will still be heading to Beijing, as she qualified for the 1,000 and 1,500 meter competitions.
That’s where Jackson will be cheering on her friend.

Passage 12
(22-23高一下·安徽马鞍山·期中)Communication is the basic quality of human beings. But most people fail to have the courage to talk freely with people they have first met in any place. I have many years of experience of interviewing guests on TV. I find that communication for some people is easy. However, it can also become a tough task for introverted people, because they feel awkward about meeting and speaking to other people, especially the people they know recently.
To communicate freely with people, first of all, we have to keep our attitudes right. When we enter a new place, it’s polite to introduce ourselves at first. It’s also a good idea to wait for the seniors to invite us to shake hands. Then, we can focus on their notebooks or mobile phones and say, “Good choices; they are very beautiful.” This shows that we like them. Sometimes there are certain things that can start a conversation, like the classroom we are in or the local news we both know. However, don’t voice our opinions on people’s faces and heights.
Besides, we need to carefully listen to what others say. Talking without stopping is always not a good idea; we should also pause and listen to others’ responses. Try to be actively involved in their topics and views. When they find us reliable and friendly to talk to, we will find them nice too. Let the conversation lead us, and we’ll see that one topic leads to another.
Last but not least, do stay in touch after leaving. It’s very rude not to ask for the contact number, especially after the other people have helped you. Even if we don’t want to have further communication, just occasional greetings are necessary. It shows that we attach great importance to them.
9.What can we infer about the author from the text?
A.She’s a student. B.She’s a host. C.She’s a farmer. D.She’s a teacher.
10.What does the underlined word “introverted” mean in Paragraph 1?
A.Frank. B.Generous. C.Shallow. D.Shy.
11.What should we do when we meet strange people?
A.Try to find common topics. B.Judge their appearance.
C.Invite the seniors to shake hands. D.Wait for others to introduce themselves.
12.What is the best title for the text?
A.How to avoid awkward situations? B.How to stay in touch with friends?
C.How to show respect to the seniors? D.How to communicate with new friends?
Passage 13
(22-23高一下·四川成都·期中)Christmas has come and gone once again. I'd been wanting to go holiday shopping ever since China eased its COVID-19 response measures in early December 2022, going to supermarkets to get ready for the big holiday.
My mom was a single parent in New York City, the US. During the Christmas holiday, she would always make sure our home had a real festive feel to it — and she’d always make sure to get a real tree. We'd decorate it with ornaments and lights on the morning of December 25. And I always knew presents awaited. Over the years, I've never forgotten these happy moments.
I first arrived in China in late 2008 and have since settled down in Shenyang, capital city of Liaoning Province in the northeast. Even though Christmas is not an official holiday in China, many shop windows will feature seasonal decorations and some locals will buy Christmas gifts for their families and friends.
Unfortunately, I tested positive for Omicron (奥密克戎) on December 13th, 2022, and had almost all the symptoms (症状). I figured this would be the end of my holiday. As I knew my body preferred natural herbs, I decided to take the path of traditional Chinese medicine. With the help of this ancient form of treatment, plenty of rest and plenty of water, I made a speedy recovery. It seemed Christmas had not been lost, after all.
After feeling much more like my normal self again, I went to the cinema to watch the latest action-adventure film, Avatar: The Way of Water. When I saw the fantasy epic on the big screen, I felt a sense of relief, like the movie theater was the only world that existed at that very moment.
It is an experience that gives me something to share. When we meet with trouble, embrace it and get through it. I would like to wish all of you a very happy Christmas and a wonderful 2023.

Passage 14
(23-24高一下·福建福州·期中)Neuroengineer Silvestro Micera develops advanced technological solutions to help people regain sensory and motor functions that have been lost due to injury events or neurological disorders. Until now, he has never before worked on strengthening the human body and cognition with the help of technology.
Now in a study published in Science Robotics, Micera and his team report on how diaphragm (隔膜) movement can be monitored for successful control of an extra arm, essentially augmenting (增补) a healthy individual with a third-robotic-arm.
For further exploration, the researchers first built a virtual environment to test a healthy user’s capacity to control a virtual arm using movement of his or her diaphragm. They found that diaphragm control does not interfere with actions like controlling one’s physiological (生理的) arms, one’s speech or gaze.
In this virtual reality setup, the user is equipped with a belt that measures diaphragm movement. Wearing a virtual reality headset, the user sees three arms: the right arm and hand, the left arm and hand, and a third arm between the two with a symmetric (对称), six-fingered hand.
In the virtual environment, the user is then hinted to reach out with either the left hand, the right hand, or in the middle with the symmetric hand. In the real environment, the user holds onto an exoskeleton (外骨骼) with both arms, which allows for control of the virtual left and right arms. Movement detected by the belt around the diaphragm is used for controlling the virtual middle, symmetric arm. The setup was tested on 61 healthy subjects (受试者) in over 150 sessions (某项活动的场次).
Previous studies regarding the control of robotic arms have been focused on helping the disabled. The latest Science Robotics study is a step beyond repairing the human body towards augmentation. “Our next step is to explore the use of more complex robotic devices using our various control strategies, to perform real-life tasks, both inside and outside of the laboratory. Only then will we be able to grasp the real potential of this approach,” concludes Micera.

Passage 16
(23-24高一下·福建福州·期中)Whether you believe it or not, there is a festival that honors the monkeys. Called ‘The Monkey Buffet Festival,’ it is celebrated in the city of Lopburi. You may find this surprising, but when you ask some locals about the cultural significance of this festival you will find that there is really nothing! The Monkey Buffet Festival is supposed to be for business — a creative and unique way of attracting and increasing tourists in Thailand.
However, you may ask why, of all the animals in Thailand to honor with a festivity, choose monkeys? Interestingly, this is due to ancient folklore (民间传说) that tells the story of Hanuman, a Hindu monkey deity (神) who is believed to have rescued a bride (新娘) from a ten-headed evil spirit. It was said that Hanuman discovered Lopburi, and these monkeys, the ones living in Lopburi receiving a feast every year, are his descendants (后代).
The yearly Monkey Buffet Festival started in 1989 organized by a local businessman. Nowadays, the festival is a major tourist event and travelers from all over the world come here to see these huge numbers of monkeys filling their stomachs.
The Monkey Buffet Festival is a unique event that will give you a new perspective (视角) on how monkeys are treated in Lopburi. It may be a strange festival, but promises a lot of fun especially for people who love animals. These long-tailed monkeys are very used to humans, so tourists have no need to worry that they will go away seeing people getting near them. However, this could be disadvantageous as well. They can be very aggressive (好攻击的) and have been known to take glasses and wallets away from tourists. So keep an eye on monkeys hanging from trees in the area.
Visit Lopburi in Thailand and enjoy the Monkey Buffet. What are you waiting for? Mark your calendar for the last Sunday of November and experience the festivities with the cute little monkeys. Where else can you find a festival where monkeys are fed with jellies, candies, sausages, and a can of Coke to drink!

Passage 17
(23-24高一下·福建福州·期中)Before Ed Sheeran became the Grammy-winning and 150 million album-selling Ed Sheeran, he was just another struggling artist. He was playing in small clubs, knocking on doors and being told no over and over again — following a seemingly impossible dream.
But Sheeran decided to take a risk on himself, buying a one-way ticket to Los Angeles in 2010 after booking one gig (特约演奏). Looking for other gigs led to playing on Jamie Foxx’s radio show and to using the recording studio in Foxx’s home for free. And sleeping on Foxx’s couch (长沙发).
“Within a month,” Sheeran said, “of going there, with zero confidence, and ending up in one of the biggest movie stars in the world’s house, recording ... in my mind, I was like, ‘I must have something.’ So, going back to England, I had this charged-up battery ... and started making records, doing tours all over ...”
Staying the course in the face of struggle and rejection (拒绝) is hard.
That’s where Foxx stepped in for Sheeran. “‘You’re great,’” Foxx recalled telling Sheeran. “I said, ‘I know you don’t have anywhere to go, so you can take a rest here.’”
Most people give up in the face of adversity (逆境) — even if they are smarter, better connected, more talented or better funded than you. Success often comes down to perseverance (坚持). You can’t win if you aren’t around at the end.
You don’t have to offer your couch. But you can be kind. You can offer a word of encouragement to a struggling friend. You can offer a little help to a struggling connection. Behind every startup is a person with a dream: a person living on couches and depending on strangers being kind. Once in a while, be one of those strangers. Because a little help may be all a person needs to keep going.

(23-24高一下·云南昭通·期中)Showing Respect for Seniors
Dads have Father’s Day. Moms have Mother’s Day. Kids have Children’s Day. But, do our grandparents have a special holiday? Yes, they do!
The Double Ninth Festival is a special day for elderly people in China. The festival is on the ninth day of the ninth month of the lunar calendar. As the Chinese word for nine has the same sound as the word for long, people take the Double Ninth Festival to show their wishes of long life for elderly people.
There are many traditions for this festival. On that day, families get together and climb mountains for luck and in the hope that elderly people will live much longer. They also drink chrysanthemum wine (菊花酒) and wear a plant called zhuyu to celebrate it. Both chrysanthemum and zhuyu are regarded as clean plants that can clean houses and cure diseases.
Respecting elderly people is shown not only on this special day but also in daily life. For example, when an older person enters a room, everyone stands up. (22-23高一下·四川眉山·期中)A man from British has learned skills needed to perform Beijing Opera, making the audience enjoy his lively performance of the Monkey King.
Ghaffar Pourazar said he has been a big fan of Bruce Lee since he was a child and is full of interest about China. In 1993, he happened to watch Beijing Opera performed in London by professionals from Jingyu Theatre Company of Beijing. Ghaffar said he fell in love with the beautiful voices, colorful costumes, excellent shows and so on. So after one year, he arrived in China alone and became a student of Beijing Opera at a Beijing school.
At the age of 32, he had to learn with teenage students everyday, starting from the most basic training of the legs and waist. At the time, he was mostly troubled by the dialogue in Beijing Opera. To him, it was the biggest obstacle, but he never gave up.

Passage 20
(22-23高一下·广东中山·期中)As we continue to explore farther out into our solar system and beyond, the question of humans living on other planets often comes up. Manned bases on the Moon or Mars for example, have long been a dream of many. There is a natural desire to explore as far as we can go, and also to extend humanity’s presence on a permanent or at least semi-permanent basis. In order to do this, however, it is necessary to adapt to different extreme environments. On the Moon for example, a colony must be self-sustaining and protect its inhabitants from the airless, harsh environment outside.
Mars, though, is different. While future bases could adapt to the Martian environment over time there is also the possibility of modifying the surrounding environment instead of just co-existing with it. This is the process of terraforming-adjusting Mars’ atmosphere and environment to make it more Earth-like. But the bigger question is, should we?
One of the main issues is whether Mars has any native life or not and if it does, should it be preserved as much as possible? If the answer is yes, then large-scale human settlements on Mars should be completely off-limits. Small colonics might be fine, but living on Mars should not be at the expense of any native habitats, if they exist. If Mars is home to any indigenous life, then terraforming should be a non-issue; it simply should not be done.
What if Mars is lifeless? Even if no life exists there, that untouched and unique alien environment needs to be preserved as it is as much as possible. We’ve already done too much damage here on our own planet. By studying Mars and other planets and moons in their current natural state, we can learn so much about their history and also learn more about our own world. We should appreciate the differences of other worlds instead of just transforming them to suit our own ambitions.

A.Is there life on Mars?
B.Can we adapt to Mars?
C.Should we terraform Mars?

A.Ensure that it’s not harmed.
B.Negotiate with the Martians.
C.Change the unpopulated regions.

11.What does the underlined word “indigenous” in paragraph 3 mean?
A.Complex. B.Native.
C.Foreign. D.Intelligent.
12.How does the author develop his ideas in the text?
A.By referring to others’ research.
B.By evaluating different planets.
C.By justifying the benefits of terraforming.
D.By arguing in support of one viewpoint.

Passage 23
(23-24高一上·河北沧州·期中)There are two kinds of people: those who like to pack up leftovers as soon as dinner is over, and those who let leftovers sit out for a few hours so they can cool down.
However, both leaving leftovers out for a long period of time and adding hot items to the fridge can cause problems.
Whether you should immediately put food in the fridge or let it sit out to cool depends on its temperature. Dangerous bacterial (细菌的) growth happens between 41 and 135 degrees F. Potentially harmful bacteria grows most rapidly at these temperatures.
Placing lots of hot food in the fridge can raise the temperature of the fridge into this danger zone. Fridge temperatures should always be set below 40 degrees F. This may help the food get out of the danger zone as fast as possible.
However, there’s no harm in putting hot food directly into the fridge if you need to. If you are a forgetful person, or if you won’t be around to store the food after it has cooled enough, go ahead and put it in the fridge. Your fridge can handle the heat and get the food cooled quickly.
Food should never stay out at room temperature for more than two hours. Leftovers can become breeding grounds (滋生地) for dangerous bacteria if they’re left out too long and can make people sick.
“It is OK to leave the food cooling outside before you hit the two-hour mark,” says Serena Poon, nutritionist of Le Cordon Bleu’s Grand Diploma training program. “In fact, the sooner you can get your leftovers in the fridge, the better.”
5.Which temperature most contributes to the growth of harmful bacteria?

C.Between 41~135 degrees F. D.Above 135 degrees F.
6.What is the author’s attitude towards putting hot food directly into the fridge?
A.Unclear. B.supportive. C.Worried. D.Unconcerned.
7.What does Serena Poon suggest doing about the leftovers?
A.Dividing them into small parts.
B.Storing them in the fridge right away.
C.Waiting until they cool down completely outside.
D.Leaving them sitting at room temperature for two hours.
8.What is the best title for the text?
A.When to Pack up Leftovers B.How to Prevent Bacterial Growth
C.To Cool Food Outside or in the Fridge D.A Good Idea to Store Food in the Fridge
Passage 24
(23-24高一下·湖南长沙·阶段练习)When I was in eighth grade, my English teacher Joan announced that we were going to learn about prepositional phrases (介词短语) . “There are over forty commonly used prepositions,” she continued. “And everyone must memorize them.” Joan recited (背诵) these prepositions as easily as saying the days of the week. She said you would find grammar easy when you memorized them. I tried my best and finally succeeded. Then, grammar became easier, just as Joan had promised.
In addition to singing the prepositions, she shared other useful language points. I still remembered her catchy phrase: “Good better best, never let it rest, until your good is better, and your better is best.”
After high school, I went to college, majoring (主修) in — my parents couldn’t believe it — English! In a creative writing class in my junior year, I recited the prepositions for my professor and classmates. I explained how my eighth-grade teacher, Joan, had often said that a strategically placed prepositional phrase could add depth and variety to sentences. Impressed, my professor asked for a copy of Joan’s list and other tricks of the trade that I remembered.
After graduating from college, I landed a job teaching eighth-grade English. I tried best the way Joan had to make grammar easy. I started the unit with prepositions coming first. Memorization was the important part. Before long, the students were singing the prepositions to their favorite tunes. One year, since it was near Christmas, we all sang the prepositions to “Jingle Bells”.
I also required students to recite the prepositions in ten seconds or less. If you thought that was impossible, then you didn’t know eighth graders. They welcomed any trouble, and with no homework as a motivator, they got right down to business. I pulled out a stopwatch and timed the students daily to judge their progress; 21, 16, 12, then bingo, 10 seconds!
I taught eighth-grade English for thirty-eight years. Looking back, teaching English was a tough but worthwhile job, and I loved it every day.

A.They joined colorful after-class activities.
B.They tried their best to avoid their homework.
C.They sometimes failed to follow the author’s instructions.
D.They made gradual progress in remembering the prepositions.
12.What can be inferred about the author?
A.He was greatly influenced by Joan. B.He found his job full of challenges.
C.He was very popular among his students. D.He devoted all his life to grammar teaching.
Passage 25
(23-24高一下·广东广州·期中)George Gershwin, born in 1898, was one of America's greatest composers. He published his first song when he was eighteen years old. During the next twenty years he wrote more than five hundred songs.
Many of Gershwin's songs were first written for musical plays performed in theatres in New York City. These plays were a popular form of entertainment in the 1920s and 1930s. Many of his songs have remained popular as ever. Over the years they have been sung and played in every possible way — from jazz to country.
In the 1920s there was a debate in the United States about jazz music. Could jazz, some people asked, be considered serious music? In 1924 jazz musician and orchestra leader Paul Whiteman decided to organize a special concert to show that jazz was serious music. Gershwin agreed to compose something for the concert before he realized he had just a few weeks to do it. And in that short time, he composed a piece for piano and orchestra which he called Rhapsody in Blue. Gershwin himself played the piano at the concert. The audience were thrilled when they heard his music. It made him world-famous and showed that jazz music could be both serious and popular.
In 1928, Gershwin went to Paris. He applied to study composition with the well-known musician Nadia Boulanger, but she rejected him. She was afraid that classical study would ruin his jazz-influenced style. While there, Gershwin wrote An American in Paris. When it was first performed, critics(评论家) were divided over the music. Some called it happy and full of life, to others it was silly and boring. But it quickly became popular in Europe and the United States. It still remains one of his most famous works.
George Gershwin died in 1937, just days after doctors learned he had brain cancer. He was only thirty-nine years old. Newspapers all over the world reported his death on their front pages.

Passage 26
(23-24高一下·陕西西安·期中)ChatGPT, designed by OpenAI to carry on conversations just like humans, has become a viral excitement. The AI-powered tool went from zero to a million users in just five days! Its ability to provide in-depth answers to user questions has even drawn the attention of distinguished technology companies.
The intelligent robot understands what the user says or types and then responds in a way that makes sense. Its vast body of knowledge has been gathered from the internet and archived books. It is further trained by humans. This makes ChatGPT a useful tool for researching almost any topic.
“We have a lot of information on the internet, but you normally have to Google it, then read it and then do something with it,” says Ricardo, chief science officer and co-founder of AI company Erudit. “Now you’ll have this resource that can process the whole internet and all of the information it contains for you to answer your question.”
ChatGPT cannot think on its own. It depends on the information that it has been trained on. As a result; the AI tool works well for things that have accurate data available. However, when unsure, ChatGPT can get creative and flow out incorrect responses. OpenAI cautions users to check the information no matter how logical it sounds. Also, ChatGPT has only been trained with information till 2021. Hence, it cannot be relied upon for anything that happened after that.
Experts believe ChatGPT has limitless potential to solve real-world problems. It can translate long texts into different languages, create content on almost any topic, and even summarize books.
However, ChatGPT has received mixed reactions from educators. Some believe it could serve as a valuable tool to help build literacy skills in the classroom. It could also be used to teach students difficult science or math concepts. But other educators think ChatGPT will encourage students to cheat. They fear this will prevent them from building critical thinking and problem-solving skills. As a result, many districts are starting to ban its use in schools.

Passage 27
(23-24高一下·湖南长沙·期中)The dry land in Gir National Park and Wildlife Preserve, located near India western tip, is the proud — and only — home of the Asiatic lion (亚洲狮). By the early 1900s, however, their populations had decreased for homo loss and hunting, leaving fewer than 50 known individuals alive. Though their numbers have risen over the past several decades — climbing to around 670 in2020, a successful story — the lions are still considered endangered.
One of the biggest challenges to keep the lions’ future is to track them, a hard work. Some animals, like tigers and zebras, have special coat patterns that provide useful marks to the researchers. But for the Asiatic lions, researchers must look elsewhere.
In 2019, Banerjee, who worked for Indias National Tiger Conservation Authority, developed an AI system to recognize the lions with high accuracy (精准). The AI program, SIMBA, has been applied in practice. “It will be a fantastic tool for long-term lion monitoring,” says Banerjee. He adds, “It could help forest officials arrive at a more accurate estimate (评估) of Gir’s lion population. In a few years, the group will have a rich collection of information — how many lions are male, female, how many will bear babies and how many are dead.”
Despite the advantages, Baneijee also adds his worries. He suggests certain rules be made to prevent main information from being stolen. “Where tools like SIMBA really shine”, he says, “is in helping researchers develop monitoring plans that are keys to the protection of at-risk animals,” he says, “otherwise, all your efforts will be in vain.”
5.What is the greatest difficulty in protecting Asiatic lions?
A.Stopping them from being killed. B.Keeping track of them.
C.Protecting their living environment. D.Increasing their population.
6.How does SIMBA help researchers?
A.By providing accurate information. B.By tracking other animals.
C.By monitoring the animal stealers. D.By analyzing why lions decrease.
7.What’s Baneijee’s opinion about the AI program in the last paragraph?
A.It should be put into wide use right away. B.It has more risks than advantages.
C.Its possible risks should be aware of. D.Its disadvantages should be ignored.
8.Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A.The Advantages of AI on Protecting Animals. B.An AI Program for Protecting Asiatic Lions.
C.The Importance of Protecting Asiatic Lions. D.Measures to Protect Endangered Animals.
Passage 28
(23-24高一下·湖南长沙·期中)As William Shakespeare is to literature in English, so is the poet Du Fu to the Chinese literary tradition. “We have Dante, Shakespeare and Du Fu. These poets create the very values by which poetry is judged,” remarked Harvard Professor Stephen Owen in Du Fu: China’s Greatest Poet, a BBC documentary that aired on April 7.
Aimed at introducing the charm and beauty of traditional Chinese literature to viewers around the globe, the documentary invited the famous British actor Ian McKellen, who played the wizard Gandalf in the film series The Lord of the Rings, to read 15 of Du’s poems that have been translated into English.
The one-hour film traces the poet’s life experiences in detail. Born in 712, Du lived in the reign of the Emperor Xuanzong of Tang (712—756), a time marked by extraordinary prosperity, inclusiveness and glorious cultural accomplishments.
However, as An Lushan’s rebel army floored the empire, the 43-year-old Du, the former civil servant at the Tang court, had to take his family out of his hometown, and faced starvation and sufferings. Through ups and downs, the poet never stopped writing and about 1, 500 poems have been kept over the ages.
Even though he never held a high position in the government, Du still cared about common people. For example, in the poem My Cottage Unroofed by Autumn Gales, he wrote that “Could I get mansions covering ten thousand miles, I’d house all poor scholars and make them beam with pleasure”.
“That is why he is honored as the Poet Sage by later generations. A difficult life and his spirit of concern about the world helped him create so many masterpieces,” Shi Wenxue, a cultural critic based in Beijing, told the Global Times.
9.What can we know about the BBC documentary?
A.It introduces Shakespeare. B.Du Fu is acted by Ian McKellen in it.
C.Its target audience is Chinese. D.It shows 15 of Du Fu’s poems to the audience.

C.Du’s high position in the government. D.Du’s low position in the government.
12.In which section of a website may this text appear?
A.Entertainment. B.Health. C.Literature. D.Science.
Passage 29
(23-24高一下·黑龙江哈尔滨·期中)Have you ever looked at a seal (海豹) and thought, “Is that the same seal I saw yesterday?” Well, there could soon be an app for that. Known as SealNet, this app was developed by a team of undergraduate students from Colgate University in New York.
Taking inspiration from the technology adapted for recognizing bears, Krista Ingram, a biologist at Colgate University, led her students to develop software that is tailored to identify the harbor seal, a species with a special liking for posing on coasts.
The team had to train their software to identify seal faces. “I give it a photograph. It finds the face, and makes it a standard size,” says Ingram. And then she and her students would identify the nose, the mouth, and the center of the eyes by themselves.
As with all technology, however, SealNet is not always unerring. The software saw seal faces on other body parts, plants, and even rocks. In one case, Ingram and her students did a double take at the similarity between a rock and a seal face. “The rock did look like a seal face,” Ingram says. “The darker parts were about the same distance as the eyes, so you can understand why the software found a face.” Consequently, she says it’s always best to check that seal faces identified by the software belong to a real seal.
Of the world’s pinnipeds — a group that includes seals and sea lions — harbor seals are considered the most widely spread. Yet knowledge gaps do exist. Other techniques to track seals, such as tagging and aerial monitoring, have their limitations and can be highly invasive (侵入的) or expensive. Ingram believes SealNet could be a useful, noninvasive tool for researchers.
Ingram points to an aspect of seal behavior that SealNet could cast more light on. The team’s trials indicated that seals return to the same sites on coasts year after year. Increasing scientists’ understanding of how seals move around could strengthen arguments for protecting specific areas, says Anders Galatius, an ecologist at Aarhus University in Denmark.

Passage 30
(23-24高一下·重庆璧山·期中)In 2016, Mark Raymond learned the hard way that life can change in a split second. One day, Raymond went boating with his friends. He jumped off the back of the boat and hit a sandbank, leading to a severe injury to his neck. He became paralyzed and spent months in the hospital receiving treatment. When he was allowed to leave the hospital, he realized that the hard part was just beginning. He still needed to exercise to recover his strength after finishing the outpatient (门诊) treatment.
However, when Raymond returned home, he realized there was a serious lack of accessible gyms or facilities that could help people with different abilities work out and improve their health in his community. The lack of them caused Raymond to take action. In 2018, he established the Split Second Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides treatment that takes up from where outpatient treatment left off.

Passage 31
(23-24高一下·河南郑州·阶段练习)A broken heart and a sad ending to a long friendship. That’s something most of us have experienced, or probably will. After all, it’s part of human life. But the experience can be hard to get over.
But research shows there are pathways through the heartache. Listening to sad music is a major one. It can help you begin to feel joy and hopefulness about your life again. It can arouse the desire to connect with others.
Sad music can help heal and uplift you from your broken heart. A recent study from Germany found the emotional influence of listening to sad music is an arousal of feelings of empathy (同情), and a desire for positive connection with others. That, itself, is psychologically healing. It draws you away from concentration on yourself, and possibly towards helping others in need of comfort.
Another experiment, from the University of Kent, found that when people were experiencing sadness, listening to music that was “beautiful but sad” improved their mood. In fact, it did so when the person first consciously accept the situation causing their sadness, and then began listening to the sad music. That is, when they intended that the sad music might help, they found that it did.
These findings link with other studies that show accepting your sad situation emotionally leads to healing and growth beyond it. It seems unbelievable but it does make sense. For example, research from Cornell University found that accepting discomfort about a life experience or new situation, and viewing it as a step towards growth and change, encourages people to find a pathway through it, beyond it. As Churchill famously said, “If you’re going through hell, keep going.” That discomfort points you towards creating a plan, a new action. It brings hope.
1.What can we learn from Paragraph 3&4?
A.Sad music can make people help others.
B.Sad music can make sad people feel better.

D.Having an-unbearable experience.
3.How does the author develop this article?
A.By presenting research findings. B.By giving directions.
C.By listing authoritative figures. D.By comparing examples.
4.Which of the following can be the best title for the article?
A.How to Find Pathways through Heartaches
B.How We React to a Broken Heart Matters a Lot

Passage 32
(23-24高一下·山东·期中)When we think about what makes humans different from other animals, the word “conscience” often appears. Conscience is the feeling you get when you assess (评估) if you’ve done something “correct” or “wrong”. It is with the help of our conscience that we understand the moral principles we hold. This motivates us to act on them and therefore helps us assess our character and behavior. Eventually, it helps us judge ourselves against those principles, in terms of how well we follow them. Accordingly, you avoid certain desires (i. e., eating in class) and follow the behavior that is considered correct or “right” (paying attention to what the teacher is teaching) .
Consciousness, on the other hand, reflects how aware you are of your surroundings. A good way to understand this is to think of the human mind as an iceberg, as proposed by Freud’s psychoanalytic theory. The part of the iceberg on the surface represents your conscious awareness. It refers to all the things you are aware of and can easily describe. For instance, right now, while reading this article, your conscious mind is helping you make connections. The deeper level of the iceberg is your unconscious mind. It refers to aspects that you are unaware of, including your fears, violent motives, and strong desires that are hard to describe.
Many researchers, like Freud, propose that morality or conscience develops when a child internalizes (内在化) the rules that their, parents set when the child was growing up. However, some psychologists, like Paul Bloom, argue that morality is something we are all born with. Bloom argues that all babies are born with a sense of fairness. The claim came from studies of adopted children with genes, who were twins and separated at birth. If they possessed the “gene” to be kind, they would continue to be kind, despite being brought up in different family environments.
So, which opinion is true? We truly don’t know. While there is more evidence in the studies claiming that conscience is developed through learning and socialization, the newer ideas of it being genetically acquired from birth look promising as well!
5.What is a function of conscience?
A.It motivates us to act quickly.
B.It keeps record of our behavior.
C.It assesses our moral principles.
D.It helps us tell right from wrong.
6.In which situation does your unconscious mind work?
A.You apply what you learn to practice.
B.You appreciate the beauty of poetry.
C.You have a fear of public speaking.
D.You describe violent scenes in a book.
7.What may Freud agree with?
A.Genes affect kids’ consciousness.
B.Kids acquire conscience with age.
C.Genetic studies promote his theory.
D.Parents should set strict rules for kids.
8.What may be a suitable title for the text?
A.New theory uncovers the secret of our mind
B.What helps tell human being from animals?
C.Is conscience gained at birth or with age?
D.Consciousness improves our moral level
Passage 33
(23-24高一下·浙江杭州·期中)Is your dog an Einstein or a Charmer? For US $60, a recently-founded company called Dognition will help you learn more about your dog. It offers an online test telling you about the brain behind the bark.
Dognitionis test measures a dog’s intellect (思维能力) in several aspects — from empathy to memory to reasoning skills. But don’t expect it to measure your pet’s IQ. Dr. Hare, one of the venture’s co-founders, says a dog’s intelligence can’t be described with a single number. Just as humans have a wide range of intelligences, so do dogs. The question is what type your dog relies on more.
After you pay your money, Dognition’s website will take you through a questionnaire about your dog: For example, how excited does your dog get around other dogs, or children? Do fireworks scare your pup? Then, Dognition guides you through tests that are as fun as playing fetch or hide-and-seek. At the end, you get a report of your dog.
Your dog could fall into one of nine groups: Ace, Stargazer, Maverick, Charmer, Socialite, Protodog, Einstein, Expert, or Renaissance Dog. That can give you something to brag about on Dognition’s Facebook page! It also can shed new light on why dogs do the things they do. For example, a Charmer is a dog that trusts you so much that it would prefer to solve problems using information you give it rather than information it can get with its own eyes.
Dognition helps people understand their dogs in ways that they have never been able to do. This new understanding can enrich the relationship between dogs and their owners.

C.The purpose of Dognition’s testing is to control a dog’s behavior.
D.A dog’s intelligence can be decided based on the score of a Dognition’s test.
12.According to the passage, what would a Charmer most likely do?
A.Stay away from people whenever possible
B.Copy how other dogs solve problems.
C.Rely on its owner to point out where his food is.
D.Follow its own senses to get what it wants.
Passage 34
(23-24高一下·浙江·期中)As a young girl growing up in France, Sarah Toumi dreamed of becoming a leader who could make the world a better place. Her passion to help others was awakened when, from the age of nine, she accompanied her Tunisian father to his birthplace in the east of the country during holidays. There she organized homework clubs and activities for children.
Toumi witnessed first-hand the destructive effect of desertification (沙漠化). “Within10 years rich farmers became worse off, and in 10 years from now they will be poor. I wanted to stop the Sahara Desert in its tracks.” A decrease in average rainfall and an increase in the severity of droughts have led to an estimated 75 percent of Tunisia’s agricultural lands being threatened by desertification.
Toumi recognized that farming practices needed to change. She is confident that small land areas can bring large returns if farmers are able to adapt by planting sustainable (可持续的) crops, using new technologies for water treatment and focusing on natural products and fertilizers (肥料) rather than chemicals.
In 2012, Toumi continued her dream to fight the desert. She moved to Tunisia, and set up a programme named Acacias for All to put her sustainable farming philosophy into action. “I want to show young people in rural areas that they can create opportunities where they are. Nobody is better able to understand the impact of desertification and climate change than somebody who is living with no access to water.”
By September2016, more than 130, 000 acacia trees had been planted on 20 pilot farms, with farmers recording a 60 percent survival rate. Toumi estimates that some 3 million acacia trees are needed to protect Tunisia’s farmland. She expects to plant l million trees by 2028. In the next couple of years, Toumi hopes to extend the programme to Algeria and Morocco.
3.How did Toumi’s holiday trips to Tunisia influence her?
A.They fired her enthusiasm for helping others. B.They helped her better understand her father.
C.They made her decide to leave the country. D.They destroyed her dream of being a teacher.
4.What is the main cause of the desertification of Tunisia’s farmland?
A.Cold weather. B.Soil pollution. C.Low rainfall. D.Forest damage.
5.Why did Toumi set up Acacias for All in Tunisia?
A.To create job opportunities for young people. B.To promote the protection of their farmland.

6.Which of the following can be the best title to the text?
A.Saving Water in Africa B.Fighting Poverty in North Africa
C.Holding back the Sahara D.Planting Trees in Tunisia
Passage 35
(23-24高一下·安徽蚌埠·期中)It is not only the environment, weather and the economy, but also culture and traditions around the world that are threatened by a warmer climate. Researchers at Lund University in Sweden and the University of Queensland in Australia have mapped what little is known about how climate change is eroding local knowledge and cultural heritage.
“We risk losing the memory of indigenous(本土的)people’s ways of life without this type of documentation,” says Guy Jackson, a researcher at Lund University.
Guy Jackson is one of the authors of a literature study that includes 100 scientific articles. One of the conclusions of the study is that cultural heritage is primarily seen as something of material value, such as a cultural site or historic building. In addition, Guy Jackson also pointed out in the study that the loss of cultural heritage is a potential future problem, even though there is evidence that it is already happening.
Focusing on material losses means that important traditions and knowledge systems are overlooked. “There are many non-material losses that are valuable for both individual identity and group identity,” says Guy Jackson.
The study shows a clear connect ion between loss of cultural heritage and changes in the natural environment. For example, songs and working methods change when groups lose traditions linked to a physical location. One scientific article points out that for the Inuit in Canada, identity is closely linked to the environment: “Inuit people are people of the sea ice. If there is no more sea ice, how can we be people of the sea ice?”
According to Guy Jackson, this could lead to several consequences(结果). Loss of traditions and cultural heritage can make it more difficult to deal with climate change, and weaken social cohesion(凝聚力), as people lose touch with traditional ways of life.
“Science should contribute by developing practical solutions and strategies that help with adaptation to the losses that have already happened,” Guy Jackson concludes.
7.What does the underlined word “eroding” in paragraph I probably mean?
A.Controlling. B.Destroying. C.Increasing. D.Improving.
8.What’s the main idea of paragraph 3?
A.The future of cultural heritage.
B.The material value of cultural heritage.
C.The conclusions that Guy Jackson drew from his study.
D.The contribution Guy Jackson made to protect cultural heritage.
9.Why does the author mention the Inuit in the passage?
A.To highlight the importance of cultural diversity around the world.
B.To emphasize the need for practical solutions to climate change.
C.To show the connection between cultural heritage and social cohesion.
D.To prove the relation between the natural environment and cultural heritage.
10.Which of the following might Guy Jackson agree with?
A.Loss of cultural heritage hasn’t happened so far.
B.Cultural her it age is mainly viewed as something non-material.
C.Loss of Indigenous culture could stop the society from developing.
D.Loss of cultural heritage brings more challenges to solving climate change.

【答案】1.B 2.D 3.C 4.A
【导语】这是一篇说明文,文章详细探讨了健身镜的利弊,以及它对不同使用者可能带来的影响。
1.主旨大意题。根据第二段内容“These are 180cm or so tall, high-tech mirrors that have a computer which is connected to the Internet, and also work as a video screen. The idea is that people contact an online trainer, who then appears in the mirror along with their reflection.(这是一种高约180厘米的高科技镜子,上面有一台连接到互联网的电脑,也可以作为视频屏幕。这个想法是这样的:人们联系一位在线教练,然后他就会和自己的映像一起出现在镜子里)”可知,本段主要告诉我们智能健身镜的基本功能。故选B。
2.细节理解题。根据第三段中“On the simpler mirrors the video and sound are just one-way — people can see and hear the trainer, but not the other way around. Lessons are typically not live; instead, people just get into a library of online workout videos.(在简单的镜子上,视频和声音只是单向的——人们可以看到和听到教练,但教练却不能看到或听到他们。课程通常不是现场直播;相反,人们只需进入在线健身视频库)”可知,人们可以在简单款的健身镜上观看健身视频。故选D。
3.细节理解题。根据第四段中Logan说的话“Seeing themselves in the mirror allows the users to correct their form or position, so they get the best possible benefits of strength exercises and reduce mistakes that could lead to injuries(在镜子里看自己可以让用户纠正他们的姿势或位置,这样他们就能从力量训练中获得最大的好处,并减少可能导致受伤的错误)”可知,Logan认为这款镜子可以帮助用户更合理地锻炼。故选C。
4.主旨大意题。根据倒数第二段“But is there any actual advantage in being able to watch yourself work out?(但是看着自己锻炼有什么实际的好处吗?)”以及根据最后一段“However, Dr Anthony Papathomas, a sports and fitness psychologist says there is value to this argument, but that he also has some concerns.(然而,运动和健身心理学家安东尼·帕帕托马斯博士说,这一论点有其价值,但他也有一些担忧)”可知,文章详细探讨了健身镜的利弊,以及它对不同使用者可能带来的影响,因此最佳标题应该是“Fitness Mirror: Good or Bad”(健身镜:好还是坏)。故选A。
【答案】1.C 2.A 3.D 4.D
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。主要介绍了作者针对读者对其书的误会而作的解释,以及介绍了情商和智商各自的特点。
1.推理判断题。根据第一段“The subtitle of my 1995 book Emotional Intelligence (EI) reads, “Why It Can Matter More Than IQ.” That subtitle, unfortunately, has led to misunderstandings of what I actually say. Some people even make the absurd claim that “EI accounts for 80 percent of success.”(我1995年出版的《情商》一书的副标题是“为什么情商比智商更重要”。不幸的是,这个副标题导致了对我真正要说的话的误解。有些人甚至荒谬地宣称“情商占成功的80%”)”可知,作者写这篇文章的目的是澄清读者对他的书的一些误解。故选C。
2.细节理解题。根据第三段“My argument is actually that emotional and social skills give people advantages in areas where such abilities make the most difference, like love and leadership. EI does better than IQ in “soft” areas, where intelligence matters relatively little for success. That said, another such area where EI matters more than IQ is in performance at work, when comparing people with roughly the same educational backgrounds like MBAs or accountants.(实际上,我的观点是,情感和社交技能让人们在这些能力发挥最大作用的领域(比如爱和领导能力)具有优势。在“软”领域,智力对成功的影响相对较小,情商比智商要好。也就是说,当比较教育背景大致相同的人(如MBA或会计师)时,另一个情商比智商更重要的领域是工作表现)”可知,情感和社交技能使人们在某些领域具有优势,如爱和领导能力,故可知在家庭关系中情商比智商更重要,以及在工作表现方面,情商比智商更重要。故选A。
3.推理判断题。根据第四段“IQ is a much stronger predictor than EI of which jobs or professions people can enter. However, having enough intelligence to hold a given job does not by itself predict whether one will be a star performer or rise to management or leadership positions in one’s field. In part this is because everyone at the top level of a given profession has already been examined for intelligence. At those top levels a high IQ becomes a basic ability, one needed just to get into and stay in the game.(智商比情商更能预测人们能从事哪些工作或职业。然而,拥有足够的智力来胜任某项工作本身并不能预测一个人是否会成为明星演员,或者是否会在自己的领域晋升到管理或领导职位。在某种程度上,这是因为在某一特定职业中处于最高水平的每个人都已经接受了智力测试。在这些顶级水平上,高智商成为一种基本能力,一种仅仅需要进入并留在游戏中的能力)”可知,作者可能会认同智商决定一个人进入某一领域的基本能力。故选D。
4.细节理解题。根据第五段“The one place I expect we will be seeing more data showing a relationship between skills in the emotional and social area and school performance will be in studies of children who have gone through social/emotional learning (SEL) programs. These courses give students the self-management skills they need to learn better. And so to the degree that advantage promotes learning, they should do better on academic achievement scores. A study from the University of Illinois finds around a 10 percent increase in achievement test scores among these students. Probably, the SEL programs would also have meant higher scores on the particular assessment of EI used in the Australian study, and so if they had tested such children, there may well have been a positive connection.(我希望我们能在一个地方看到更多的数据,显示情感和社交领域的技能与学校表现之间的关系,那就是对接受过社交/情感学习(SEL)项目的儿童的研究。这些课程为学生提供了他们需要更好地学习的自我管理技能。因此,在这种优势促进学习的程度上,他们应该在学业成绩上取得更好的成绩。伊利诺伊大学的一项研究发现,这些学生的成就测试成绩提高了10%左右。也许,在澳大利亚的研究中,SEL项目也意味着在特定的情商评估中获得更高的分数,因此,如果他们对这样的孩子进行了测试,很可能会有积极的联系)”可知,SEL项目试图通过情商来促进学习。故选D。

Passage 05
Now I’ve got a full-time job there. I shall always be thankful to Megan. I wish I had known earlier that you could have a career, even if you aren’t top of the class at school.
1.What is the author’s present job?
A.Working part-time in a college. B.Taking care of children for a family.
C.Helping children with their schoolwork. D.Looking after children at a kindergarten.
2.Why did the author leave her first job?
A.She found a full-time job. B.She was fed up with children.
C.She decided to attend a part-time course. D.She needed a rest after working extra hours.
3.Which of the following is not true according to the passage?
A.Megan helped the author find a part-time job.
B.The author used to take care of two girls in a family.
C.In the family with two girls, the author had to work extra hours very often.
D.The author met Megan in a park.
4.What has the author learned from her own experiences?
A.Less successful students can still have a career. B.Qualifications are necessary for a career.
C.Hard work makes an excellent student. D.One must choose the job he likes.
【答案】1.D 2.C 3.A 4.A
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文,主要介绍了作者找到适合自己的工作的经历。
1.推理判断题。根据第一段中的“I really love my job because I enjoy working with small children and like the challenges and awards from the job.(我真的很喜欢我的工作,因为我喜欢做儿童工作,喜欢工作带来的挑战和奖励。)”、第四段中的“I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.(我不得不辞去在那一家的工作,在幼儿园找了份帮忙的工作。)”和最后一段中的“Now I’ve got a full-time job there.(现在我在那里有一份全职工作。)”可知,现在作者在幼儿园有了一份全职工作,她和小孩子打交道,由此可推测,她现在在幼儿园照顾小孩子。故选D。
2.细节理解题。根据第四段中的“My experience counted for a lot and I got on a part-time course. I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.(我的经验很重要,我上了一门兼读课程。我不得不辞去在那一家的工作,在幼儿园找了份帮忙的工作。)”可知,由于作者要上兼读课程,所以辞去了第一份工作。故选C。
3.细节理解题。根据第三段中的“I then found myself a job, looking after two little girls.(然后我找到了一份工作,照顾两个小女孩。)”和“We agreed that if I had to work extra hours one week, she’d give me time off the next. But unfortunately, it didn’t often work out.(我们约定,如果我一周必须加班,她下一周会给我休假。但不幸的是,它并不经常奏效。)”可知,作者曾在一个家里照顾两个女孩子,这份工作经常让作者加班,所以B项和C项陈述正确;根据第四段中的“One Sunday, I was in the park with the children, and met Megan who used to go to school with me.(一个星期天,我和孩子们在公园里,遇到了曾经和我一起上学的梅根。)”可知,作者和梅根是在公园见面的,所以D项陈述正确。根据第四段中的“I had to leave my job with the family, and got work helping out at a kindergarten.(我不得不辞去在那一家的工作,在幼儿园找了份帮忙的工作。)”可知,文章中提到作者在幼儿园找到了一份兼职的工作,但并没有指出是梅根帮助作者的,所以A项错误。故选A。
4.推理判断题。根据最后一段中的“I wish I had known earlier that you could have a career, even if you aren’t top of the class at school.(我希望我早点知道,即使你在学校不是班上的尖子生,你也可以有一份事业。)”并结合作者的经历可推测出,作者在学校并不是一个优秀的学生,但她最后依然找到了自己喜欢的工作,所以不那么成功的学生依然可以拥有一份事业。故选A。
【答案】1.A 2.D 3.D 4.A
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了研究表明平衡能力对任何年龄段的人来说都很重要,我们需要定期锻炼以保持良好的平衡能力
1.细节理解题。根据第一段中“Good balance is a necessary part of being physically fit and key to living a long life, according to research. (研究表明,良好的平衡是身体健康的必要组成部分,也是长寿的关键。)”可知,良好的平衡有助于我们过上健康长寿的生活。故选A项。
2.推理判断题。根据第二段中“Falls are the leading cause of injury and death for those 65 and older, with nearly 30% in this age group reporting at least one fall in 2018 (跌倒是65岁及以上老年人受伤和死亡的主要原因,该年龄组中近30%的人报告在2018年至少跌倒过一次)”、第三段中“Forty-eight percent of young adults reported falling at least once during one 16-week study. (在一项为期16周的研究中,48%的年轻人报告至少跌倒过一次。)”和第四段中“Falls within the previous two years were reported by 18% of young adults (ages 20 to 45) in another study published in the journal BMC Public Health. That figure (数据) compared with 21% of middle-aged adults (46 to 65) reporting falls and 35% of those over 65. (在《BMC公共卫生》期刊上发表的另一项研究中,18%的20至45岁的年轻人在过去两年内摔倒过。相比之下,46岁至65岁的中年人和65岁以上的人报告跌倒的比例为21%和35%。)”可知,作者通过给出一系列的数据呈现研究结果。故选D项。
3.细节理解题。根据围绕年轻人摔倒情况的第三段中“The falls most commonly happened during sports activities (摔跤最常发生在体育活动中)”和围绕另一项研究的第四段中“While falls among young adults were often connected with sports (而年轻人的跌倒通常与运动有关)”可知,年轻人参加体育运动时容易摔倒。故选D项。
4.推理判断题。根据最后一段Susan Baxter所说的话“Our body is conditioned to lose what we don’t regularly use and practice, and balance is no different (我们的身体习惯于失去我们不经常使用和练习的东西,平衡也没有什么不同)”可推知,如果我们不经常练习,我们就会失去平衡。故选A项。
Then Mario tried to sit on the chair, but he missed and fell down onto his back. Everyone had a pretty good laugh about it. Mario wouldn’t be beaten. He kept trying to sit on the magic chair, and kept falling to the ground… until, suddenly, he tried again and didn’t fall over. This time he sat, hovering in mid-air…
Looking around, Mario saw George, Lucas and Diana — three of his best friends, holding him up, so he wouldn’t fall down. Meanwhile, many others he had thought of as friends did nothing but make fun of him, enjoying his every fall.
Leaving with his three friends, he explained to them how his grandpa had so cleverly thought of a way to show him that true friends are those who care about us, and not just any acquaintance who happens to be passing by. Even less would a real friend be someone who takes joy in our misfortunes.
5.Why did Mario turn to his grandpa for help?
A.Because he didn’t like his school.
B.Because he couldn’t make any friends.
C.Because he didn’t get along with his schoolmates.
D.Because he couldn’t find out who his true friends were.
6.Why was Mario able to hover in the mid-air?
A.Because he managed to sit on the invisible chair finally.
B.Because his three friends held him up with their hands.
C.Because his classmates gave him a chair to sit on.
D.Because he could see the magic chair clearly.
7.Who are real friends according to the text?
A.Those who laugh with us.
B.Those who take joy in our misfortunes.
C.Those who care about us when we are in trouble.
D.Those who care for us when we are popular at school.
8.How did Mario most probably feel in the end of the text?
A.Happy. B.Unconcerned. C.Upset. D.Uncomfortable.
【答案】5.D 6.B 7.C 8.A
根据第一段中“However, he wasn’t sure whether or not his schoolmates were his real friends, so he asked his grandpa for help. (然而,他不确定他的同学是否是他真正的朋友,所以他向他的爷爷求助)”可知,Mario向爷爷求助是因为他无法找出谁是他真正的朋友。故选D项。
6.细节理解题。根据第五段中“This time he sat, hovering in mid-air…(这次他坐着,悬浮在半空中)”和第六段中“Looking around, Mario saw George, Lucas and Diana — three of his best friends, holding him up, so he wouldn’t fall down. (Mario环顾四周,看到George、Lucas和Diana——他最好的三个朋友,支撑着他,这样他就不会摔倒)”可知,Mario能悬浮在空中是因为他的三个好朋友用手把他托住了。故选B项。
7.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“Leaving with his three friends, he explained to them how his grandpa had so cleverly thought of a way to show him that true friends are those who care about us, and not just any acquaintance who happens to be passing by. (和他的三个朋友一起离开时,他向他们解释了他的爷爷是如何聪明地想出了一个方法来告诉他,真正的朋友是那些关心我们的人,而不仅仅是碰巧路过的熟人)”可知,真正的朋友是那些在我们遇到困难时关心我们的人。故选C项。
8.推理判断题。通读全文,尤其是第六段中“Looking around, Mario saw George, Lucas and Diana — three of his best friends, holding him up, so he wouldn’t fall down. (Mario环顾四周,看到George、Lucas和Diana——他最好的三个朋友,支撑着他,这样他就不会摔倒)”可知,Mario通过爷爷的方法找到了真正的朋友,有George、Lucas和Diana这三个真正关心他的朋友,所以他最后应该是开心的。故选A项。
9.What makes the shared gym room different from the common one?
A.Holding one person at a time. B.Standing in the living communities.
C.Offering open spaces. D.Having all advanced equipment.
10.What do people need to do to use the shared gym room?
A.Pay 100 yuan first.
B.Let down curtains for privacy.
C.Take a shower before exercise.
D.Book a room ahead of time.

Passage 09

Jackson tweeted, “You can bet I’ ll be the loudest voice in the oval cheering for her in the1,000 and 1,500 next month.”
5.How does the author start the passage?

【答案】9.B 10.D 11.A 12.D

11.推理判断题。根据第二段中“Sometimes there are certain things that can start a conversation, like the classroom we are in or the local news we both know.(有时有些事情可以开始一段对话,比如我们所在的教室或者我们都知道的当地新闻)”可推知,当我们遇到陌生人时,应该试着找一些共同的话题来开始对话。故选A项。
12.主旨大意题。通读全文,特别是第一段中“To communicate freely with people, first of all, we have to keep our attitudes right.(为了与人自由交流,首先,我们必须保持正确的态度)”、第二段中“Besides, we need to carefully listen to what others say.(此外,我们需要仔细倾听别人说的话)”和第三段中“Last but not least, do stay in touch after leaving.(最后但并非最不重要的是,离开后一定要保持联系)”可推知,文章就如何与新朋友自由交流提出几点建议,所以D项“如何与新朋友交流”最能概括本文主旨。故选D项。

You may find this surprising, but when you ask some locals about the cultural significance of this festival you will find that there is really nothing!

9.What is the best title for the text?
A.Is there life on Mars?
B.Can we adapt to Mars?
C.Should we terraform Mars?
D.Are Mars and Earth So Different?
10.What does the author think we should do if life is found on Mars?
A.Ensure that it’s not harmed.
B.Negotiate with the Martians.
C.Change the unpopulated regions.
D.Assess the advantages and disadvantages.

While future bases could adapt to the Martian environment over time there is also the possibility of modifying the surrounding environment instead of just co-existing with it. This is the process of terraforming-adjusting Mars’ atmosphere and environment to make it more Earth-like. But the bigger question is, should we?(然而,火星是不同的。 C选项“Should we terraform Mars?(我们应该改造火星吗?)”
故选A。
11.词义猜测题。根据第三段中的“One of the main issues is whether Mars has any native life or not and if it does, should it be preserved as much as possible? If the answer is yes, then large-scale human settlements on Mars should be completely off-limits. Small colonics might be fine, but living on Mars should not be at the expense of any native habitats, if they exist. 由此推知,划线词所在句“If Mars is home to any indigenous life, then terraforming should be a non-issue; it simply should not be done.(如果火星上有任何indigenous生命,那么地球化应该不是问题;这是不应该做的。)”表达的意思应为:如果火星是任何土著生命的家园, 那么地球改造应该是一个不存在的问题;这根本不应该做。因此,划线词indigenous的意思应为“土著的,本土的”,与native同义。故选B。
12.推理判断题。作者在第一段中“There is a natural desire to explore as far as we can go, and also to extend humanity’s presence on a permanent or at least semi-permanent basis. In order to do this, however, it is necessary to adapt to different extreme environments.(人类有一种自然的愿望,即尽我们所能去探索,同时也希望在永久或至少半永久的基础上扩大人类的存在。然而,为了做到这一点,有必要适应不同的极端环境。)”以及第二段“Mars, though, is different. While future bases could adapt to the Martian environment over time there is also the possibility of modifying the surrounding environment instead of just co-existing with it. This is the process of terraforming-adjusting Mars’ atmosphere and environment to make it more Earth-like. But the bigger question is, should we?(然而,火星是不同的。
Passage 21
(22-23高一下·广东湛江·期中)A broken heart. A sad ending to a love affair. That’s something most of us have experienced, or probably will After all, it’s part of human life. But no question, the experience can be serious. You might find yourself listening more to sad music, sad songs, or worse, that you’ve been into a sense of hopelessness about life itself.
You might feel a sadness, as in Neil Young’s Only Love Can Break Your Heart, or the pain of a lyric (歌词) from Bob Dylan’s Love Sick: “I’m sick of love, I wish I’d never met you.”
But research shows there are pathways through the heartache. Listening to sad music is a major one. It can help you begin to feel joy and hopefulness about your life again. It can activate empathy (共鸣) and the desire to connect with others both pathways through the prison of heartache and sadness.
That may sound paradoxical (相悖的). Especially if you listen to melancholy music, like Marianelli’s Farewell, or to popular songs and there are plenty of them, across decades and generations: Billie Eilish’s When The Parry’s Over in our present times R.E.M.’s Everybody Hurts, from the 90s.
New research finds that and music can help heal (治愈) and uplift you from your broken heart. For example, a recent study from Germany found the emotional impact of listening to and music in a call of feeling of empathy and a desire for positive connection with others. That itself, in psychologically (心理的) healing.
The finding links with other studies that show accepting your bad situation emotionally accepting reality as it is stirs healing and growth beyond it. In short, accepting your experience mouses hope.
A.Below 40 degrees B.Between 39~40 degrees F.
根据文章第三段“Dangerous bacterial growth happens between 41 and 135 degrees F. Potentially harmful bacteria grows most rapidly at these temperatures.(危险的细菌生长发生在41至135华氏度之间。潜在有害细菌在这个温度范围内生长最快)”可知,最有利于有害细菌生长的温度范围是41至135华氏度。故选C项。
6.推理判断题。根据文章第五段“However, there’s no harm in putting hot food directly into the fridge if you need to. If you are a forgetful person, or if you won’t be around to store the food after it has cooled enough, go ahead and put it in the fridge. Your fridge can handle the heat and get the food cooled quickly.(然而,如果你需要的话,把热的食物直接放进冰箱并没有害处。如果你是个健忘的人,或者你不会在那里等待食物冷却后再存放,那么就直接把它放进冰箱吧。你的冰箱能够承受热量并迅速使食物降温)”可知,作者认为把热的食物直接放进冰箱并没有害处。如果你是个健忘的人,或者你不会在那里等待食物冷却后再存放,那么就直接把它放进冰箱,可以推断出作者对于直接将热食放入冰箱的态度是支持的。故选B项。
7.细节理解题。根据文章最后一段引用Serena Poon的话“In fact, the sooner you can get your leftovers in the fridge, the better.(事实上,越快把剩菜放进冰箱越好)”可知,Serena Poon建议应立即将剩菜存入冰箱。故选B项。
8.主旨大意题。根据第一段“There are two kinds of people: those who like to pack up leftovers as soon as dinner is over, and those who let leftovers sit out for a few hours so they can cool down.( 有两种人:一种是晚饭一吃完就喜欢打包剩菜的人,另一种是让剩菜放在外面几个小时以便于冷却的人)”、第二段“However, both leaving leftovers out for a long period of time and adding hot items to the fridge can cause problems(不过,长时间放置剩菜剩饭和将热食物直接放入冰箱都可能导致问题)”以及最后一段““It is OK to leave the food cooling outside before you hit the two-hour mark,” says Serena Poon, nutritionist of Le Cordon Bleu’s Grand Diploma training program. “In fact, the sooner you can get your leftovers in the fridge, the better.”(“在两小时之内,将食物放在室外冷却是可以的,”勒科尔多布蓝带大文凭培训项目的营养师塞丽娜·普恩说。“事实上,你越早将剩菜放进冰箱越好。”)”可知,文章主要探讨了剩菜是否应该放在外面冷却还是直接放入冰箱的问题,指出了两种做法的利弊,并给出了相应的建议。因此,文章的最佳标题应该是关于“在冰箱外冷却食物还是在冰箱内冷却”。故选C项。
9.Why did Joan ask her students to memorize prepositions?
A.She wanted them to overcome their weak points.
B.She thought this benefits their grammar learning.
C.Memory exercises are a quick way to learn English.
D.Prepositions are a hot part to be examined in exams.
10.What happened in the author’s creative writing class?
A.He introduced his former teacher to his classmates.
B.He showed everyone his ways of learning grammar
C.His professor was interested in Joan’s teaching methods.
D.His talent for being a teacher was recognized by his professor.
11.What is implied about the author’s students from Paragraph 5?
A.They joined colorful after-class activities.
B.They tried their best to avoid their homework.
C.They sometimes failed to follow the author’s instructions.
D.They made gradual progress in remembering the prepositions.
12.What can be inferred about the author?
A.He was greatly influenced by Joan. B.He found his job full of challenges.
C.He was very popular among his students. D.He devoted all his life to grammar teaching.
【答案】9.B 10.C 11.D 12.A
【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了作者受到自己八年级的英语老师的影响,而选择了英语专业,并在毕业后做了英语老师,继续传递自己英语老师的教学方式。
9.推理判断题。根据第一段中“She said you would find grammar easy when you memorized them. I tried my best and finally succeeded. Then, grammar became easier, just as Joan had promised. (她说当你记住了他们,你会发现语法很容易。我尽自己最大的努力并成功记住了。然后语法就如琼所承诺的变得更加容易了。)”可知,琼让学生们记忆这些介词,主要是为了帮助他们学习语法,故选择B项。
10.细节理解题。根据第三段中“In a creative writing class in my junior year, I recited the prepositions for my professor and classmates. I explained how my eighth- grade teacher, Joan, had often said that a strategically placed prepositional phrase could add depth and variety to sentences. Impressed, my professor asked for a copy of Joan’s list and other tricks of the trade that I remembered. (在我大学三年级的一门创意写作课上,我向教授和同学背诵了介词。我解释了八年级的老师琼是如何经常说,一个巧妙放置的介词短语可以给句子增加深度和多样性。教授印象深刻,$$
