Unit 3单元话题
There are various ways we can help people in need. Big charity o 1 commonly deliver food to hungry people, build homes for the homeless, and volunteer at local charity centers.
However, there is a new way to help poor people living in distance, and that is by giving money to them directly.
Give-Directly gives the money to the poor families directly by using cell phones. When the family receives an SMS message, they can get the money from a n 2 mobile money agent. It has become an effective way to transfer the money over thousands of miles.
Since 2012, the charity organization Give-Directly has been studying the e 3 of direct money support to poor Kenyans (肯尼亚人). The charity gives them a one-year budget (预算), spread over several months. They can spend the money on whatever they need, and they never have to pay it back! When Give-Directly tracked (追踪) how the money was being used, they were glad to find that the Kenyans were using the money p 4 .
Many of the families spent the money on new metal roofs to take the place of their old grass roofs. While grass roofs need r 5 several times a year, metal roofs last longer and save money. Some bought land and cows for farming or started small businesses, such as buying a used motorcycle to transport people around like a taxi. This helped them to have more money for food, clothing and health care, and give their children an education.
The studies on giving money directly to poor Kenyans are going on. Some people are worried that some of the families will w 6 the money or simply become dependent on these donations (捐助). Although it’s hard to tell if it is a good idea to give them direct money support, we can all agree that it is a c 7 way of helping others.

Last summer, I had an incredible experience during a summer camp in the United States. I spent 30 days with 40 campers from both China and America. From the moment I arrived, I noticed some big differences. For one, Americans are very direct and open in their communication. During our first group activity, everyone introduced themselves enthusiastically and shared personal stories. At f 1 , I felt a bit shy. However, I soon found their openness refreshing and started to share more about m 2 .
M 3 were another interesting experience. In China, we usually have rice or noodles, but at camp, we often have sandwiches, salads and cold drinks. It took some time getting used to it, but I enjoyed trying new foods like tacos. My fellow campers were c 4 about Chinese cuisine and I had fun explaining our dishes and even teaching them how to use chopsticks.
One of the biggest challenges was adjusting to a relaxed attitude towards time. In China, we are very punctual and schedules are strictly followed. At camp, activities were more flexible and it was common for events to start a bit l 5 . This initially frustrated me, but I gradually learned to relax and go with the flow. Despite these differences, I made many new friends and learned a lot about American c 6 .
This summer camp taught me the importance of being open-minded. It was an unforgettable experience that gave me a deeper appreciation for different cultures.

Peter Lantos started seeing the ugly messages someone posted about him on his social m 1 when he was only fourteen. He didn’t know who they were from, only that the posts came from someone c 2 Guess9. The posts continued into high school, and the message got uglier. Whenever Peter went online, he would always find more t 3 posts. He felt like it was his problem, so he didn’t say anything to his parents at first. Sometimes the bullying (霸凌) made him feel so bad that he didn’t want to go to school. Peter was the victim of cyberbullying (网络霸凌).
In several ways, cyberbullying is even worse than face-to-face bullying. A cyberbully can post without real names, using an online name, like Guess9. A cyberbully can post someone’s personal information or post photos or videos that might be e 4 to the victim. Hundreds, thousands or even millions of people might see these messages on their notebooks, tablets or smartphones.
What should you do if you are a victim? The most important thing anyone can do is to tell someone. Talk to an a 5 about it. Don’t deal with cyberbullying alone! There are ways to block a cyberbully’s posts and someone can help you do that. And one of the most e 6 things you can do might be to do nothing. Ignoring the bully, rather than replying to his or her posts, puts you in control. Instead of r 7 , take a break or go for a walk. Remember that the cyberbully has done something wrong. You haven’t. And what if you have a friend who is bullying someone online? Take a stand! Tell your friend how hurtful it is. You might make a difference.

Learning a new language is difficult. Do you want to be a better learner? Here is some a 1 :
Listen to the teacher c 2 in class. Listen to what the teacher says, and then write them down. But you don’t need to write down everything the teacher says. Try to remember as many facts and ideas as you can. Underline(在……下面画线) important facts or main ideas.
Work h 3 in class. You should speak out a lot. And answer the questions as many as possible.
Do your homework carefully. Exercises are very i 4 to you. They can help you go over the knowledge you learned. Read over the notes you wrote in class. If there is anything you don’t u 5 , ask the teacher at the next class.
Practise more. For example, keep a diary or write stories.
As the world is becoming global, learning a foreign language is necessary besides studying our mother tongue well. For example, learning English is a good way. English is a s 1 that I like as well as Chinese. I still remember how glad I was when I t 2 my English book for the first time. Since then I have regarded speaking English fluently as one of my important aims. Though my level is not very high, I never l 3 my passion(热情) and I will always keep working hard. Nowadays many children are chosen to learn English at a very y 4 age, but which is the right way should take?
Now let me share my own ways with you.
Firstly, one who wants to learn English well must be fond of it. As the saying goes, “A good interest is half of the success!”
Secondly, you have to work hard and always keep a good state of mind. One can never reach the top of mountain without a hard p 5 and enough practice so do English learners. Remember never to be disappointed when you got low marks or even did not pass the exams. As a learner especially a beginner, to experience failure is not s 6 !

You should have a proper arrangement, or you may learn it for a long time without rest and then leave it alone also for a long time. By doing so, the time you have spent learning is n 7 a waste.
These above are my main ways of learning and I have received some good effects. If you think they are also suitable for you, you can just have a try to follow me.

The government employs many people to help take care of our society. However, they cannot help out everyone just by themselves. They need our help! Consider Volunteering!
What Is Volunteering?

Volunteering is something that really helps us. It gives us a c 2 to stop grumbling (抱怨) about our own lives and realize exactly how lucky we are. We can see the people who really need help. A cup of coffee, a furry bear claw (毛茸茸的熊爪) and a hole in a grey wall. These may be the best words to describe a s 1 coffee shop named HINICHIJOU, which is at 68 Yongkang Road in Shanghai. It has been very p 2 recently.
There is no s 3 in the shop, only a hole in the wall and a door for the staff (职工) to enter and leave. Customers can order coffee through their mobile phones, and then a take-away cup with a rose will be handed out from the hole by the brown claw. The cute claw likes t 4 customers’ heads or hands while they are waiting for coffee. And customers also like greeting the claw.
Besides the i 5 service, the story behind the wall has warmed many people. HINICHIJOU opened on December 3rd, 2020, which is marked as the International Day of Disabled People. There are three workers in the shop, and all of them are unable to hear or speak. This w 6 of service allows them to communicate without having to speak or show up.
Wang Haiqing, who is not able to hear well, is the owner of the coffee shop. He said he opened the coffee shop to p 7 more chances for disabled people to have a job. “I believe HINICHIJOU can spread love and encouragement (鼓励) to the disabled,” he said happily.
I was in New York and rode with a friend in a taxi. When we got out, my friend said to the driver, “Thank you. You did a good job of driving.”
The driver was surprised for a second.
“I admire the way you keep cool in h 1 traffic,” my friend said. “Thank you,” the driver said and drove off.
“What was that all about?” I asked.
“I am trying to bring w 2 back to New York,” he said. “I believe it can save the city.”
“How can one man save New York?”
“It’s not one man. The driver will be nice to 20 people i 3 he has 20 passengers in the following day, just because someone was nice to him. Those people in turn will be kinder to their employees, or shopkeepers, or waiters, or their own families.
“It sounds good,” I said, “but I’m not sure whether it would w 4 in practice.”
“N 5 is lost even though it doesn’t. It didn’t take any of my time or money to tell that man he was doing a good job. I have made a study of this. The thing that seems to be lacking for the postal employees is that no one tells the people who work for the post office what a good job they’re doing,” he said.
“But a 6 they’re not doing a good job,” I said.
“They’re not doing a good job in reality, because they feel that nobody c 7 whether they do a good job or not. Why not say a kind word to them? When those people hear my words, they will feel better. The city will then benefit from their happiness.” he said.
