A new legend is born, one that has already enriched the myth of the Teahupo’o Wave. It’s not about a defeated warrior’s skull or legendary chiefs, but about an impressive battle in the tubes, the prelude to the victory of a young Vairao champion.
Surf fans remember the cheers of the French team mixed with tears of joy for their cadet, Kauli Vaast, when they learned he would represent France at the Paris Olympic Games. He had qualified by topping the European rankings at the ISA World Championships in El Salvador in May and June 2023.
Spotted ten years ago by Raimana Van Bastolaer, and accompanied by Michel Bourez who is “like his big brother,” Kauli was inspired by Gabriel Medina, fascinated by Jeremy Flores (future manager of the French Olympic team), and supported by all the guys from Teahupo’o. He became a triple European Junior Champion. Selected for the French national team for the first time in 2023, and then coached by Hira Teriinatofa, a double ISA world champion with the French team, the little prince of Teahupo’o was determined to enter the big leagues.
A few months later, as he himself admitted, the unbelievable power was with him. In the final, at the start of the heat (a 35-minute heat in this case), the swell was more than just indecisive. When a series of waves with unexpected tubes came up, Kauli, who knew these sometimes changeable waves well, set off and overcame one of the only breakers of the day, earning a well-deserved 9.5. Australia’s Jack Robinson, ranked 3rd in the world, also hit a tube, scoring 7.83. A few minutes later, Kauli added an 8.17 to secure the victory: he had caught the last wave of the heat.
Now the face of a popular luxury brand, an Olympic champion, and a competitor for the top spot in the world surfing rankings, can Kauli Vaast get a big head?
4. Which sport is Kauli devoted to?
A. Ski Champion. B. Swimming Leagues.
C. Surfing Champion. D. Basketball Leagues.
5. What does Paragraph 3 mainly demonstrate?
A. Great minds think alike. B. Success is always a bed of roses.
C. Heroes always have a humble start. D. Help from others is appreciated.
6. What was crucial to Kauli’s victory in the final according to Paragraph 4?
A. Jack Robinson’s lower score on a tube wave.
B. His dominance over the highest single-wave score.
C. The unpredictable swell providing ideal wave conditions.
D. His strategic timing to capitalize on the final opportunity.
7. What’s the meaning of the underlined words in the last paragraph?
A. Generosity. B. Arrogance. C. Annoyance. D. Curiosity.
【答案】4. C 5. D 6. D 7. B
【解析】

Sixty percent of Americans play video games daily, according to Techjury. In order to escape from the reality of quarantine (隔离), more people have turned to video games and VR (virtual reality) has become more popular than ever.
The world of VR isn't new to the gaming industry. It has been an ongoing concept for years, dating back to the 1800s. NASA popularized VR technology in 1989, bringing light to advancements that had never been seen before, and in 1991, SEGA introduced VR to gamers.
Gaming companies such as Oculus and HTC have redefined gaming by allowing players to involve themselves deeply in the world of VR through personal headsets. VR users are able to socialize through chat rooms, create 3D art and exercise through heart-pumping gameplay. Once a user puts on a headset, they are immediately transported into a virtual world. This allows the player to have a better experience compared to simply staring at a TV with a game controller.
Although VR has many positive aspects, using virtual reality too much can cause health problems among users. When using VR, it is common for people to lose spatial (空间的) awareness. Therefore, users are encouraged to play in an area that is clear of furniture and other objects causing potential danger. Eye strain can also be caused by using VR too much, so it is important to limit your time playing in virtual reality and take breaks in order to minimize the possibility of experiencing negative health effects.
How VR will develop in the future is unknown to us. However, new advancements for it are on the way. Teslasuit, a company specializing in VR equipment, is creating haptic (触觉的) suits for VR gameplay. These suits will allow users to feel aspects of VR while in game and will increase involvement, build 360-degree awareness and engage muscle memory. There are an endless number of possibilities that users can experience and create in VR, and the boundaries of the virtual world are limitless.

第二节读后续写(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a dream born in fire. Andrea Peterson was 5 when she was trapped on the ledge (窗台) of a burning building.
“Throw the kid down!” said one of the firemen below, whose eyes are firm and courageous, along with professional rescue techniques. Seeing this, little Andrea jumped into lifesaving arms and a life-long ambition: She wanted to fight fires as her rescuers did.
She told that to the men who had saved her, and they laughed naturally the way grown-ups do when a kid says he wants to be an astronaut or a sports star. But this was back in a time when little girls weren’t even allowed to fantasize (幻想) about such grand goals.
“You’ll be a good mommy,” the firemen told her. “You’ll be a good teacher, maybe you’ll be a nurse, but you can never be a fireman.”
Indeed, life sidelined her ambitious dream. She was studying for a degree in aviation technology (航空科技) and that’s where she met her husband, Dennis. Unfortunately, Dennis was diagnosed with cancer. Peterson spent 31 years caring for the man she loved, and in 2007, when Dennis was about to leave, he was at peace but worried for her. “But what are you going to do?” “I’ll be fine,” she told him.
At 61, she attended a course for emergencies. She went on an ambulance ride-along from time to time. It turned out to be a life-and-death situation, which reminded her of the childhood experience back in the fire. But every time she saw people who were in need were successfully rescued, Peterson felt that long-ago childhood calling. She earned her emergency medical technician license and responded to fire calls with the ambulance. She found that her years of tending to Dennis had prepared her for dealing with the variety of hurts and ills. The inside calling echoed increasingly stronger.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

After a year, she signed up for a training unit for firefighters.

Finally came the written and physical fitness test day.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 After a year, she signed up for a training unit for firefighters. No sooner had she stepped into the training venue than she found all her classmates were 18-22 young kids. “Could I really make it?” Peterson thought to herself, struggling. At the very moment, she was once again thought of the firm and courageous eyes of the firefighters who came to rescue her over 50 years ago. She instantly rolled up her sleeves and began to learn both theoretical and practical knowledge as her much younger peers.
Finally came the written and physical fitness test day. For Peterson, she was at an advantageous situation for the theoretical part, as her past rescue experiences on ambulance ride-along made her a qualified rescuer already. However, the 3-km running, push-ups, sit-ups, etc. all behaved as huge gaps awaiting her to conquer. Though she ranked the last among such items, her persistence, endurance as well as the passion for a childhood dream made her name appear on the list of newly-announced firefighters. This time, tears blurred her eyes, as the dream born in the fire was eventually fulfilled.

7 What’s the meaning of the underlined words in the last paragraph?
A. Generosity. B. Arrogance. C. Annoyance. D. Curiosity.

In 2024, artificial intelligence (AI) continues to reshape industries, economies, and daily life. The adoption of AI in sectors like healthcare, education, and finance has accelerated, driven by advancements in machine learning, natural language processing, and generative AI. A Gartner survey reveals that 80% of enterprises are now leveraging AI in some form, up from 50% in 2022, highlighting its rapid integration into business operations.
One of the most notable trends in 2024 is the rise of generative AI tools, such as OpenAI’s GPT-4 and Google’s Gemini. On the other hand, 67% of professionals believe AI will create more jobs than it displaces, as noted in a World Economic Forum report. Ethical concerns, such as data privacy and algorithmic bias, remain critical challenges. For instance, 45% of consumers in a Deloitte survey expressed distrust in AI systems due to potential misuse of personal data.
In conclusion, 2024 is a pivotal (关键的) year for AI, marked by unprecedented growth and adoption across industries. While challenges like job displacement and ethical concerns persist, the potential benefits of AI in driving innovation, efficiency, and personalized solutions are undeniable. As AI continues to evolve, its impact on society will depend on how effectively we address these challenges and harness its potential for good.
