While Western countries start their new year in January many Asian nations celebrate it between late January and February. Let’s explore some traditions and learn how people in the world celebrate the spring festival.
Family Gatherings and Traditional Food
The spring festival is one of the biggest holidays of the year in many parts of Asia, and celebrations can go on for up to two weeks. It’s usually a time for family, with people getting together, to share food, enjoying a range of traditional dishes.
In China, people eat fish, dumplings and noodles. In the ROK, they have tteokguk, a kind of rice cake soup. In Singapore and Malaysia, they not only eat their food, but also throw it too — there’s a tradition of throwing a fish and vegetable salad high into the air for good fortune.
Honoring the Past, Celebrating the Present
People in Vietnam and the ROK often take time to think of their ancestors too. They offer seasonal dishes to their dead relatives. Meanwhile, well prepared and colorful parades fill streets. Dancers wear bright costumes, and fireworks light up the sky.
New Year New Beginnings
New years are also seen as times of new beginnings, and people do what they can to make sure the months ahead will be happy and healthy. In China, married couples traditionally give red packets filled with lucky money to unmarried younger people. In other places, people clean their homes and then decorate them for the holiday season, welcoming good fortune.

A four-year-old boy with autism (孤独症) had the experience of a lifetime when he entered a real bike competition by chance and won! His mother shared a memorable video of his victory on social media. The little boy was clearly proud to earn his very first award, looking excited as he posed in front of his small bike while holding the award.
His smile lit up the faces of everyone present. The boy’s mother was deeply grateful to the adult players who went out of their way to make her child feel special during the competition. She knew that her son’s bike couldn’t be compared to the actual bikes on display that day, which were much larger and faster. However, the players in the event thought it was more important to make a little boy’s dream come true.
“To the two bikers who should have taken first place and second place, they taught my son so much more than they know,” the mother said. “Thank you for being so kind.” While the boy enjoyed his first prize in the bike competition, she ensured that he understood the importance of showing respect for the rules of a sport and for the other players. She encouraged him to shake hands with the other winners, thank and congratulate them.
Reflecting on the event, the mother wrote, “When adults go out of their way to show kindness to kids, especially some with higher needs, the influence lasts longer than most people know. Interactions like these can really change the course of a child’s life. My little son was so lucky to experience such kindness.”
It was so sweet that the other adult cyclists made the cycle-loving boy the star of the show. He will remember the amazing day, which was filled with joy and encouragement, in his whole life.
4. Why did the boy win the competition?
A. He had the fastest bike. B. He was the only participant.
C. His mother was there to encourage him. D. Other players let him win on purpose.
5. What did the mother teach her son after his winning?
A. The necessity of competition. B. The importance of first place.
C. The importance of good sportsmanship. D. The necessity of self-congratulation.
6. What can we learn about the competition’s effect on the boy from the text?
A. It is short-term. B. It is lasting. C. It is negative. D. It is unclear.
7. What is the best title for the text?
A. Kindness Fulfilled a Boy’s Dream B. A Mother’s Expectations for Her Son
C. The Details of an Adult Bike Competition D. It Is Difficult to Raise a Child with Autism

Have you ever seen a live spade-toothed whale (铲齿中喙鲸)? It is the world’s rarest kind of whale. Do you know how many of them exist, what they eat, or even where they live in the southern Pacific Ocean? Scientists in New Zealand may finally get to learn more about them.
The country’s conservation agency said that it believed a dead spade-toothed whale had been washed up on a South Island beach earlier this month. Scientists identified the whale by its color patterns and the shape of its organs-its head, mouth and teeth. Hannah Hendriks is a sea life expert for the Department of Conservation. She said, “This is going to lead to some amazing science and world-first information.”
In the past, only a few other dead spade-toothed whales appeared on New Zealand’s beaches. Most notably, scientists didn’t have a chance to closely examine them, but now, they will be able to. They have moved the whale to a cold place for their investigation.
“Spade tooth whales live deep in the ocean. They come to the surface so rarely that scientists only know their general location in the southern Pacific Ocean. It is home to some of the world’s deepest ocean areas. It’s very hard to do research on marine mammals (海洋哺乳动物) if you don’t see them at sea,” Hendriks said. “You don’t know where to look.”
Kirsten Young is a senior lecturer at the UK’s University of Exeter. She studies spade-toothed whales. She wrote in an email that it took many years and a lot of efforts by researchers and local people to identify the whales. “This new discovery makes me wonder how many there are in the deep ocean and how they live,” Young said.
In fact, researchers studying the mammal couldn’t confirm if the species died out or went extinct, until in 2010, two spade toothed whales, both dead, appeared on a New Zealand beach. Samples of their cells later showed they were spade-toothed whales.
8. How does the author begin the text?
A. By raising questions. B. By giving examples.
C. By listing numbers. D. By making comparisons.
9. Why is the discovery of the spade-toothed whale important?
A. It shows a new kind of whale exists.
B. It identifies the whale by its place of death.
C. It confirms the whale’s population is on the rise.
D. It allows scientists to study the whale up close.
10. What did Hendriks stress about the spade-toothed whale research in paragraph 4?
A. Its reasons. B. Its benefits. C. Its challenge. D. Its process.
11. What is Young’s attitude to the new discovery?
A. Worried. B. Curious. C. Doubtful. D. Indifferent.

It is a popular viewpoint that time spent online is bad for our health because surfing the Internet or checking our phones sometimes takes us away from activities which are considered healthier, such as playing sports or socializing. As the digital economy develops, such behavior is often linked to reduced well-being.
However, a new global study has found a surprising answer: The Internet might be good for you. The University of Oxford researchers studied data on the psychological (心理的) well-being of over 2 million people across 168 countries between 2006 and 2021. They looked at 8 indicators (标志) of well-being among the individuals, who were aged 15 to 99, including life satisfaction, daily negative and positive experiences and physical health. The researchers applied well-being indicators to test the relationship between Internet use and well-being outcomes. They found that Internet access was related to positive well-being among some people.
Despite the study’s overall positive findings, however, the link between Internet access and positive well-being was fainter for young women. While some links between Internet connectivity and well-being were positive, some links were negative — with the most observed among women aged 15 to 24 years old. The researchers state that many studies have shown social media use to be connected with greater depression, especially among young women.
A systematic review of research into the topic found higher levels of social media use were connected with worse mental health outcomes, and higher levels of social media use were connected with an increased risk of internalizing and externalizing difficulties among youths, especially females. The same report also noted that the impacts of social media on mental health are complex (复杂的), as different goals are served by different behaviors, and different outcomes are produced by different patterns of use. All in all, social media use offers both benefits and risks to the health of young people, so particularly, teenage students should treat it properly.
12. What did the University of Oxford researchers study?
A. The influence of social media on physical health.
B. The mental health of people in different countries.
C. The effects of outdoor activities on physical health.
D. The relationship between Internet use and mental health.
13. What does the underlined word “fainter” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Weaker. B. Closer. C. More obvious. D. More complex.
14. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about?
A. The benefits of social media for women.
B. The effects of social media on youths.
C. The increased risks of human socialization.
D. The difficulties of research on human connection.
15. Which part of a magazine is the text probably taken from?
A. Sport and health. B. Economy and life.
C. Technology and society. D. Philosophy and psychology.

What’s the secret to a healthy plant? Sunlight and water, of course. And, it turns out that another surprising factor, music, can help grow happy, healthy plants.
According to a study published in Frontiers in Plant Science, music might promote the plants’ growth.____16____. The sound vibrations (振动) may speed up processes like nutrient transport that encourage healthier plants.
Plants don’t hear sound like humans do, but they can feel vibrations from sound and respond positively to certain types of music. The sound vibrations from music are like wind or water. Plants hearing music grow faster, with larger blooms (花朵) and healthier leaves. How about singing?____17____.
Which type of music do plants prefer? Playing heavy metal music increases plant growth, producing shorter plants with larger, more disease-resistant flowers.____18____. The loud energy of heavy metal proved most effective for blooms, suggesting an unexpected link between music and the plant’s health. Overall, findings seem to prove that plants prefer more rhythmic (有节奏的) music, especially heavy metal and classical music. Classical music seems to work wonders for keeping the holes on the outer skin of plants open longer, increasing air intake. Heavy metal appears to encourage even greater growth.
____19____. It can depend on all sorts of situations like plant types, music styles, and environmental factors. Some critics add that more research with stricter controls needs to be done in order to establish a connection between music and plant growth. The improvements in plant health observed during these studies could also be caused by better plant care and attentive behavior from caretakers.
Whether or not plants truly prefer music, adding music to your gardening life is of benefit.____20____.
A. Obviously, the same is true of it
B. Music and plants aren’t closely related
C. Classical music slightly improved growth
D. Choose the music that suits your plants best
E. Turn up the Mozart and see if plants start growing well
F. Even the type of music can have a different impact on plants
G. However understanding plants’ music preference can be difficult

In 2010, I experienced many life-changing difficulties within a short period of time. I lost my job. A very close friend passed away. Besides, my teenage child was in a tough situation that I just couldn’t solve. Both my body and my feelings were not well. Those were really tough days for me.
So I made a decision in 2013 that every year I’d do something I’d never done before. Life is a race and “Just Keep Going” became my favorite saying. I wanted to truly live my life! I started walking in 2013, and completed my first 5-kilometre race in 2014. I finished my first half marathon in 2015, but the biggest challenge came in 2016 — a full marathon (42.195 kilometers)! When I crossed the finish line, I couldn’t believe I did it! In addition, I also wrote my second children’s book. The best part was seeing my book on TV news! Life was great for a while.
In August 2017, I decided to sign up for a triathlon (铁人三项). I was good at the bike ride and running. But swimming (the first event of the triathlon) was not my advantage. So when I saw women going into the water, I asked myself, “Are you sure you want to do this thing? And you don’t know how to swim, fool!”
To keep going, I started training in February 2018 with the help of my coach, Lloyd Henry. He taught me a lot and encouraged me all the time. However, I suffered an unexpected accident in April, breaking my leg during a run. This meant I had to stop training to recover. Later I got right back into my training again. From June to August, I felt very well. Two weeks before the race day, my leg started aching. So I just decided to slow down and take a break just to make sure I could take part in the race.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
On the morning of the race, my coach went to the site with me.

Though my legs still felt weak, I kept telling myself, “Just keep going.” Every time I lifted my head for air, I imagined Lloyd cheering from the shore, giving me strength to continue.
Finding I was the last one to get out of the water, I felt a little upset. I quickly comforted myself, whispering, “This isn’t the end.” Jumping onto my bike, I repeated, “Just keep going.” The cycling and running were tough, especially with my leg aching again. Yet, I refused to stop. Sweat and tears mixed on my face, but my heart burned with pride. Crossing the line, I saw Lloyd waiting with a bright smile. “You did it!” he shouted. Though tired, I had overcome all my difficulties, realizing that true victory wasn’t about speed — it was about never giving up. Life had taught me well: Just keep going.
