I’m here to tell you something about climbing Mount Everest. I was first attracted by climbing in 2016 when, as a reporter, I was arranged to interview some professional mountaineers. Over the several days I spent with them, I began to understand the sense of freedom that mountaineering brings. Then about three years later, I gave up my job and joined the British Top Expedition. We trained at a local gym, which was the easy part. However, I found there were lots of things that frightened me about Mount Everest. That was one of the most difficult things for climbing. Anyway, I’ve managed to climb the mountain twice. The first time I went, as a reporter, I carried my camera all the way, but it wasn’t necessary. You can even forget showers on a mountain as well. On my second trip, I didn’t even take my toothbrush. But to get water, I had to melt snow, using the fuel that I brought with me. I’ve never reached the top of the mountain yet, but I’m not thinking of giving up. Instead, I’m planning. 1. Long-distance bus B As a kid, I was always around animals and I always enjoyed it. After my senior year of high school, we started renting this farm. Then I went away to Rhode Island School of Design to become an architect. After about two years and a half, I found that was not quite what I wanted to do. I felt I wanted to be an architect and have a hobby farm. But why not just have a farm and make it my career? It’s an exciting business. I think a lot of people don’t realize what’s involved in dairy farming (奶牛业). We took some trips to some progressive farms out in New York when we first started. And it really changed my attitude of what you can do. You can be a successful businessperson with a lot of challenges. And those challenges are part of what makes it very exciting — it’s not just milking cows. There’s nutrition and finances and a lot of big day-to-day decisions. Well, land is the biggest obstacle. Securing enough land is important. We don’t just need the land for the animals; we also need it to distribute the manure from the cows. And there’s a real balance, a real recycling. You take the feed; you give it to the cows, and the cows give you milk, but they also give you a lot of manure. And the best thing to do is putting it back on the land. You need 2 acres per cow basically, a cow and its calf. The land that we rent is beautiful and the land that we own is beautiful. If you get half a mile off the road and look back at scenery across the valley, it’s impressive. You get the rows of grass and the cows in the distance. 24.Which of the following is included in the dairy farming according to the text? A.Designing for the dairy farming. B.Playing with the cows around the farm. C.Taking trips around the farm to enjoy life. D.Milking cows, nutrition, finances and decisions. 25.What’s the biggest challenge that the author faced? A.Huge amounts of money. B.Securing enough land. C.Highly qualified milk cows. D.Quantities of workers. 26.What’s the meaning of the underlined word manure in Paragraph 3? A.Milk from the cows. B.Chemical fertilizers. C.Waste of the cows. D.Food offered to cows. 27.Which one is the best title for this text? A.Building a Successful Dairy Business B.Famous Farmers Around the World C.Highly Qualified Milk Cows D.The Architecture Designer C New students at Eton, starting the school year in September, are not allowed to take smartphones with them. Instead, they will each be given a “dumb” Nokia phone that is unable to access the Internet and only allows calls and texts. Students might blame the psychologist Jonathan Haidt, who popularised the idea that smartphones are responsible for rising rates of mental health problems among young people. Teachers at nearly two-thirds of secondary schools now say they have rules that prevent students from using their phones during the day. But is there really anything wrong with spending a bit of time watching videos on social media? Or taking your phone out while you’re in the supermarket queue to see funny news? We might need meaning and purpose and psychological richness in our lives, but surely we need a bit of pleasure too. A study published in April in PLoS One found that spending 20 minutes on social media or watching videos on YouTube not only contributed to no negative stress response, but was associated with a decrease in both heart rate and cortisol (皮质醇). What we get wrong is thinking that we are relaxing just because scrolling (浏览) mindlessly through social media is unproductive and feels like “time out”. There is a significant difference between doing things like being with our loved ones, spending time in nature, or reading a great book and emotional numbing (麻木). As the psychiatrist Anna Lembke argues in her book Dopamine Nation, by endlessly seeking pleasure and stimulation from our smartphone — which she describes as the “modern-day hypodermic (皮下注射) needle” — we become addicted to such stimulation, and find it harder to find joy in other less immediate things. But also by never putting our phones down and never giving ourselves a break from endless stimulation, we are not able to go into the kind of quiet brain state that allows mind-wandering, creativity and deep reflection. As we all know, if you are not paying for it, then you are the product, and businessmen in the marketplace are constantly adjusting the ways in which they occupy our brain space. We must learn to get more creative and intentional about the ways we choose to relax ourselves and perhaps, even, to enjoy some good-old fashioned boredom. 28. Why is the school Eton mentioned in paragraph 1? A. To raise a doubt. B. To explain a phenomenon. C. To introduce a topic. D. To launch a campaign. 29. What does the study published in April in PLoS One suggest? A. Constant use of social media is beneficial to health. B. Proper use of social media can reduce stress. C. Watching YouTube videos increases heart rate. D. Spending time on social media has little effect on people. 30. Why does Anna Lembke describe the smartphone as the “modern-day hypodermic needle”? A. Because smartphones can bring new energy. B. Because people rely too much on smartphones. C. Because smartphones might relieve pain quickly. D. Because people will get medical help from smartphones. 31. What can we learn from the last paragraph? A. We should pay for using smartphones. B. Businessmen often control our thinking. C. Boredom is unacceptable in modern life. D. We should choose our relaxing ways wisely. D A tool, called Nightshade, lets artists add invisible changes to their art before they upload it online to fight back against AI companies that use their work to train AI models without the creator’s permission. Using it to “poison” this training data could damage future image-generating AI models by making some of their outputs useless - - dogs become cats, cars become cows, and so forth. Generative AI models are excellent at making connections between words, which helps the poison spread. Nightshade infects not only the word “dog” but all similar concepts, such as “puppy,” “husky,” and “wolf.” The poison attack also works on indirectly related images. For example, if the model scraped (抓取) a poisoned image for the prompt (提示) “fantasy art,” the prompts “dragon” and “a castle in The Lord of the Rings” would similarly be transformed into something else. Some AI companies are facing a number of lawsuits (诉讼) from artists who claim that their copyrighted material and personal information was scraped without approval or compensation. Ben Zhao, a professor at the University of Chicago, who led the team that created Nightshade, says the hope is that it will help tip the power balance back from AI companies towards artists, by showing respect for artists’ copyright and intellectual property. Zhao admits there is a risk that people might abuse the data poisoning technique for evil uses. However, he says attackers would need thousands of poisoned samples to cause real damage to larger, more powerful models, as they are trained on billions. AI companies have offered to let artists opt out of having their images used to train future versions of the models. But artists say this is not enough: Eva Toorenent, an illustrator and artist, says: opt-out policies require artists to jump through hoops and still leave tech companies with all the power. He hopes Nightshade will change the current situation and AI companies will think twice before they act. 32. What do we know about Nightshade from the first paragraph? A. It helps artists to defend lawful rights. B. It warns netizens of the online danger. C. It reminds artists of stolen works. D. It poisons AI companies’ output. 33. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about? A. The way the “poison” spreads. B. The targets the poison attacks. C. The types of transformed images. D. The advantage of AI models. 34. How does Eva Toorenent look at the opt-out policy? A. Thankful. B. Fearful. C. Dissatisfied. D. Positive. 35. Which of the following would be a suitable title of this text? A. Nightshade: Useless Output Creator. B. Nightshade: Data Poison Technology. C. Nightshade: Artists’ Rights Protector. D. Nightshade: Image-generating Model. One of the great literature works in China is Journey to the West. The novel has many fantastic elements and most of the characters are not human, but they show recognizable human characteristics. 36 People see themselves in the characters. Another reason for the novel’s popularity is that it is not just an adventure story. 37 It is a spiritual journey where the characters were forced to examine the nature of good and evil. The novel shows that individuals cannot be understood by their outer qualities, but by the good or bad that is in their own hearts. Of course, the main reason for the novel’s popularity is Sun Wukong himself. He has faults, but at heart he is brave, loyal, good-hearted, and righteous(正义的) . 38 In time and through faith and discipline he learned to protect the weak and the powerless, to be helpful and kind, and to put others first. In a real sense, he had the same life journey that many people have had through the ages. When he was young in the Mountain of Flowers and Fruit, he was leading a free and enjoyable life. 39 In doing so, he changed from someone who loved to play tricks and stir up trouble, to someone who is self-disciplined and faithful. 40 But they also see in him a mirror of their own struggles in life as they learn to protect and help others, to stand for what is right, and to grow in maturity becoming responsible members of society. A.While in his youth he had been a little wild. B.But then he had to grow up and face the real world. C.In a sense, they want to become a hero of their own life. D.The story is more than just a group’s journey to the West. E.This human element is one reason for the novel’s popularity. F.Many Chinese admire Wukong for his abilities and bravery.
