Passage 1
(23-2024学年高一下•广东省江门期中)阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
For nearly twenty years, my life was about two things: smoking cigarettes—and trying to quit smoking cigarettes.
When I married Cassie ten years ago, I threw my pack of cigarettes and swore I was quitting.
When we bought our first house eight years ago, I celebrated it by pulverizing (粉碎) my pack of cigarettes with my shoe heel.
When my son, Cole, was born five years ago, I threw my cigarettes into a garbage can.
I even began working out—running days a week, rain or shine. I lost forty pounds but I never was able to outrun those cigarettes.
You know cigarettes are deadly—but every cell in your body screams out for that nicotine. Then, one day the willpower I had lacked arrived from most unexpected place: an unclouded corner of my son’s mind.
As Cassie was driving Cole home from kindergarten, they passed a cemetery (墓地), which made the boy ask: “Mom, what’s under tombstones?”
Realizing there was no delicate answer, she frankly said, “Dead people.”
“Is that where Dad’s going to be because he smokes?” Cole asked. “I hope not,” Cassie replied. “Dad shouldn’t smoke,” Cole said, his voice rising in anger. He kicked the back of the front seat. “Dad’s stupid for smoking. When I’m twenty, he’ll be dead.”
Cassie was speechless, shocked by Cole’s innocence. Then, just as quickly as he had exploded, Cole calmed down. “I hope he comes back as a ghost and talks to me,” he said peacefully. “Like Obi-Wan Kenobi did to Luke Skywalker in Star Wars.”

When I arrived home from work that evening, Cassie recounted the story to me. She stared right into my eyes and said, “Cole’s come to terms with the fact that you won’t be around. And if he can only have you as a ghost, that's what he’ll take.” The words were a simple truth. Smoking could only lead to one conclusion, and when they placed me under that tombstone, life would have to go on without me. If I couldn’t even fool my own five-year-old kid, why was I continuing to try to fool myself?
Later that evening, I found Cole and said: “Cole, I’m going to quit smoking, but I you’re your help.” The seconds ticked by as he hatched his plan. Finally, he spoke. “Okay. Here’s what we’ll do: every morning and every night, I’ll tell you not to smoke.” Every time I had an urge to smoke, I fought it off with thoughts of tombstones and Obi-Wan Kenobi and a little boy trying desperately to help his old man out of a jam. So here I am, checking off the days that I’ve been cigarette-free. I know I have promise to keep and people to love.

Passage 2
(23-24高一下·广东茂名·5月月考)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A Change of Heart
It was a cold winter and my family had a tough struggle. Mum had a bitter time raising us kids by herself in our small community as dad passed away five years earlier. We relied on social assistance.
Looking back, I realized what Mum went through sending us kids to school. Every morning she would place a new piece of cardboard in our shoes because our shoes were worn out. When we got home, Mum would have French toast ready for us. Constant moving was typical for my family in those days, and it didn’t look like we’d be in our current house much longer. Rent was $25 a month, but Mum couldn’t pay it, and we knew we would be forced to leave right after Christmas on the first of January.
The holidays were fast approaching, and we were given $25 for Christmas from social services. Mum said that instead of buying food, she was going to use the money to pay our rent. That way we’d have a roof over our heads for a little while longer. Then she told us that there would be no Christmas gifts.
Unbeknown to Mum, I had been selling Christmas trees, shoveling (铲) snow and doing odd jobs to earn enough money to buy a new pair of boots. I knew exactly which boots I wanted. They were ten-inch, Top-Genuine, Pierre Paris boots, and they cost $23.
The big day for getting my boots came on Christmas Eve afternoon. I was very excited as I hurried up the road to catch the bus into town. It was only a half-mile walk, but on the way I noticed a house with Christmas lights and decorations. It was then that I realized at our house, we had no lights, no decorations and no turkey or ham for Christmas dinner.

【答案】参考范文:
As I continued walking, I began to feel strangely ashamed. Much effort as I put into convincing myself, it was rather hard not to think of my poor family. It was not only the tough struggle of my family that overwhelmed me with great anxiety, but also the previously-neglected conscience which left me at a loss for reflection. Flooded by guilt and shame, no sooner had I caught sight of the approaching bus than I made up my mind to shop for my family with the $23.Determined and eager, I got onto the bus without hesitation.
With decorations and food, I reached home. At the sight of the “surprise”, Mom was in shock. After learning what I had done, she firmly held me in her arms, whispering in my ears, “Thank you, my dear!” My siblings, wild with joy, were busy beautifying our house with Christmas lights and decorations. Food ready for dinner, house lighted, my whole family was immersed in a merry atmosphere, laughter lingering around the room. Looking at all the smiling faces, I was fully aware that family is where life begins and love never ends.

Passage 3
(23-24学年高一下•湖南省邵东第三次月考)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
During this past year, I’ve had three instances of car trouble. Each time these things happened, I was sick of the way most people hadn’t bothered to help. One of those times, I was on the side of the road for close to three hours with my big Jeep. I put signs in the windows, big signs that said NEED A JACK (千斤顶), and offered money. Nothing. Right as I was about to give up, a Mexican family in a small truck pulled over, and the father bounded out.
He sized up the situation and called for his daughter, who spoke English. He conveyed through her that he had a jack but that it was too small for the Jeep, so we would need something to support it. Then he got a saw (锯子) from the truck and cut a section out of a big log on the side of the road. We rolled it over and put his jack on top, and we were in business.
I started taking the wheel off, and then, if you can believe it, I broke his tire iron. No worries: He handed it to his wife, and she was gone in a flash down the road to buy a new tire iron. She was back in 15 minutes. We finished the job, and I was a very happy man.
The two of us were dirty and sweaty. His wife prepared a pot of water for us to wash our hands. I tried to put a $20 bill in the man’s hand, but he wouldn’t take it, so instead I went up to the truck and gave it to his wife as quietly as I could. I asked the little girl where they lived. Mexico, she said. They were in Oregon so Mommy and Daddy could work on a fruit farm for the next few weeks. Then they would go home.

【答案】
When I was about to say goodbye, the girl asked if I’d had lunch. I told her I hadn’t had lunch because I’d been waiting here for help for nearly three hours. The girl said they didn’t have lunch either. She suggested to her parents that we have lunch together. Their truck happened to have some food and some things for the picnic. So we ate together in a vacant lot by the side of the road. During that time, I told about what had happened to me and how I felt. They shared interesting stories about their lives in Mexico and on fruit farms. After lunch, the girl’s mother put a paper bag of fruit in my jeep. I showed my gratitude again and we said goodbye to each other.
After they left, I got into my jeep and opened the paper bag. There are some delicate fruits in the paper bag. I was surprised to find the money I had quietly left them. At the same time, there was a note written by a girl, which read “We are very happy to be able to help you. We have encountered many difficulties and been disappointed. But we met a lot of helpful people, which made us feel very warm. To help others with one’s own ability is also a kind of lifting a finger. The beauty of life comes from these lifting a finger. I hope you have a good life and a happy mood.” This made me very moved, and I would try my best to help more people in the future to make our world more beautiful and warmer.

Passage 4
(23-24学年高一下•湖南省长沙第三次月考)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A couple of months before I started high school, my parents gave me the greatest gift any teenage boy could ask for: a cellphone. I lived on that phone all summer with my face buried in its screen. I ignored my family and my surroundings. Being connected was more important than being present.
So, you can imagine my displeasure when I learned what my dad had planned for our family vacation that year. “This year,” my dad said, “we’ll be doing something special. We’re going camping!” His excitement was met with a disappointed sigh. It wasn’t my dream vacation because mind was on my phone. I was so buried in the screen, in fact, that the first time I can remember truly looking up was when we drove across a bridge on the way to our campsite.
I stared out the window and saw redwoods towering above us, their branches threatening to pierce (刺破) the blue sky. I saw a roaring river, with slivers of silky black water appearing between crashing white rapids. The air blowing into the car from the open windows was hot. But none of that mattered to me. The reason I had looked up was for something far more serious: my phone no longer had service.
The last hour of the drive was increasingly tense. My dad announced that he had chosen a campsite that had no cell service, and that my phone would be useless until we returned home. I would be trapped in the forest for four days with no way to contact the outside world! I went through the full cycle of teenage emotions during the first day of the trip. I raged. I bargained. I begged. I flip-flopped (转变) from a depressive state to anger and back.
I went to bed angrily that night. But when I awoke in the morning, something had changed.

The next four days passed in a flash with many fun activities. _______________________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】
Instead of burying myself in my phone, l focused on something else: my surroundings. I let the noise of the wilderness wash over me, animals and bugs creating a ruckus that was both loud and serene at the same time. My anger turned to peace, then little interest and, finally, excitement. Standing on the high campsite, I felt the weight of stress melt from my shoulders as I viewed the vast expanse that unfolded below me. The sight that met my startled eyes nearly took my breath away. For the first time, I thought camping in a place that had no cell service might not be so bad.
The next four days passed in a flash with many fun activities. I hiked. I swam. I fished. My dad and I learned how to start a fire together after several false starts. We cooked together and I ate the sweetest marshmallows I had ever tasted. Dad told me stories of his life, stories I had never heard or perhaps I hadn’t been listening. When the weekend came to an end, I realized I hadn’t thought of my phone once. I hadn’t felt the need to be connected to anywhere else. It dawned on me that what mattered most were the moments I was sharing with just my father and nature.

Passage 5
(23-24学年高一下•湖北省武汉期中)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Nature, while beautiful, could also be unpredictable and merciless. But most importantly we bear in mind that in the darkest times, there’s always a light at the end of the tunnel, just like Mrs. Evans‘ cabin light.
One bright summer day, my friend Peter and I decided to venture into the unexplored trails of the Great Smoky Mountains. Blessed with rich biodiversity and fascinating landscapes, the national park seemed a perfect getaway. Little did we know that our casual hike would soon turn into an unexpected personal incident, forever engraved in our memories.
We set off early in the morning, equipped with our backpacks and a map that was supposed to guide us through the winding trails. The sun was up, casting long shadows on the forest floor as we set off on our journey. We trekked (艰难行走), laughed, and marveled at the beauty of nature around us.
As we trekked through the dense forests, taking in the natural wonders around us, we couldn’t help but feel a sense of adventure coursing through our veins. The trail was rugged and uneven, but we persevered through the challenging landscape.
Midway through our expedition, we stumbled upon a breathtaking waterfall, its glistening waters cascading down the rocks in a quiet and peaceful melody. We sat down by the water’s edge, taking a moment to get lost in the beauty of nature. The cool mist from the waterfall enveloped us, and we felt refreshed and energetic.
As the day wore on, we ventured deeper into the wilderness, eager to explore every corner of this natural paradise. We were so absorbed in the beauty of nature that just didn't notice our way and it seemed that we could not find the way back to the familiar part of the forest. Panicking, we scrambled to find our way back but the dense vegetation and winding trails only served to confuse us further. We tried to remember any possible signs that might lead us back, No sooner had we celebrated our return to the clear trails than something worse happened.

Para.2:Just when we were about to give up, a faint light flickered in the distance. ___________________________
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Suddenly, the weather took an abrupt turn. Dark clouds shrouded the sky, and a heavy downpour ensued. The comforting forest sounds quickly proved a terrifying symphony of thunder and wind. The trail that was once so clear became a muddy mess, making it impossible to go on. We tried to consult our map, but it was too late; we got lost in the wildness. Hours passing, our attempts to find the trail turned out to be in vain. With the cold creeping in, despair started to set in.
Just when we were about to give up, a faint light flickered in the distance. Curiosity overpowered our fear, and we decided to follow it. When we drew nearer, we saw a small log cabin, lights shining from its windows. Knocking on the door, an elderly woman, Mrs. Evans, welcomed us with a warm smile. She was a retired ranger who had chosen to live her twilight years in the heart of the mountains. She offered us shelter for the night, and the next morning, guided us back to the main trail. This incident strengthened our friendship and taught us the importance of resilience and hope. The experience was beyond expectation, terrifying, but enlightening all the same.

I once work in Indonesia school teaching English on a supporting program. One afternoon, while I was walking across the campus, I noticed a girl sitting on a stone, her head bowed over a notebook, completely absorbed in her studies, her fingers tracing the lines of text as she mouthed the words silently. My footsteps interrupted her, and she stood up to walk towards me. “My name is Andara,” she introduced herself. She asked if I could help her improve her English. I could tell it took immense courage for the young Indonesian girl to approach me and ask for help.
“I want to go to a US university,” she said with confidence. I was surprised. I asked to pay a visit to her family before I made any promises. After a two-hour bus ride, I met her family. I realized they would never be able to afford the expenses of a US university. Andara lived in a two-room house crowded with her parents and two brothers. The walls were dingy patched with years of wear and tear. Moved by her eagerness, I agreed to work with Hani on a volunteer basis to help her pursue her educational dreams.
Andara’s enthusiasm was increasing with her language ability, but I was becoming more and more discouraged. The prospect (前景) of taking part in the Test of English Fluency in Jakarta filled me with worry, as the entire examination was an impossible challenge for someone who had never interacted with a computer before.
One day I received the announcement of a scholarship opportunity for a major US university. After reading the requirements, I knew Andara couldn’t meet the qualifications. I told her that there was only a slim chance and encouraged her to be more “realistic” about her dream. But she remained determined.
“Will you send in my name?” she asked.
I couldn’t turn her down. I completed the application, with the painful truth about her academic life, but also with my praise of her courage and perseverance (坚持不懈).

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________【答案】
In months that followed, Andara worked even harder. Then I arranged for her to take the Test of English Fluency in Jakarta. The entire test would be an enomous challenge for someone who had never touched a computer before. For two weeks, we studied how a computer works. She studied day and night, which made me feel very moved. I stayed with her and looked up all the information she needed.
Then, not long after coming back from Jakarta, we received a letter from the scholarship association. She had been accepted. I leaped around the room, overjoyed and shocked. Andara stood by, smiling. I realized that it was I who had learned something Andara had known from the beginning: It is not intelligence alone that brings success, but also the drive to succeed, the commitment to work hard and the courage to believe in yourself. I am proud of her, and I am lucky to have learned so much in helping her.

Passage 7
(23-24学年高一下•山东省泰安5月月考)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In a house far from the city lived John and his mother. John’s only hobby was wandering in the nearby picturesque forest. In its center was a shiny clear lake with schools of fish dancing in it. Lovely animals such as deer or rabbits were playing around and cute birds were singing in trees. Fascinated by the beauty and liveliness of nature, he desired to become a great artist and present all the breath-taking scenes to the world.
John studied in the local primary school. Life was not easy for John and his mom after his father died. Knowing what hard work his mother did to make ends meet, John really didn’t want his mother to worry. His mother knew the significance of education in life but she was against his dream of becoming an artist. “The profession of artist can’t aid a person in meeting his daily expenses,” she would say. But as each day passed, John’s dream became more passionate.
Due to the living circumstances, even buying some new colors would be a luxury. John only used the worn drawing file and limited colors for his daily practice. Though lacking fine painting materials, he never gave up drawing. He spent a significant amount of time staying in the forest, secretly perfecting his craft. With continuous hard work and a distinct gift for art, he drew beautifully.
One day John read about a competition being held in the town, whose deadline was only two days away. Early the next morning, John secretly left home with the money. Hastily, he bought paper and pens for painting, and then dashed to the completion. After signing up for it, he was given the task. It was his time. He was deeply absorbed in his work, forgetting everything around him. After finishing his task, he went home, with birds singing for him. Every day, he looked forward to the result happily and anxiously, though he felt hungry. It seemed that the time stopped.
A week later, a phone call came to John’s home. Hearing what the man said, his mother felt puzzled, not knowing how his son had done it, because she knew it needed money. As soon as John arrived home, his mother told him the news, and waited for his explanation. Knowing the truth, her eyes welled up with tears. Hugging her son tightly, she apologized to him. But he was happy, not only because he had got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire, but also he was awarded a lot of money because of his work.

Last month, it was my friend Emily’s birthday, and she invited us to her house to celebrate. I’m really excited because Emily always gives me special birthday gifts, so I want to do something good in return. I decided that, instead of just buying her a gift, I’d bake (烤) her a cake. I’m not a master in the kitchen, but how hard could it be to bake a simple chocolate cake?
The day before the party, I went to the store to pick up everything I needed: flour (面粉) , sugar, eggs, and, of course, chocolate. I even bought a nice toy to make the cake look beautiful. I was feeling pretty confident. When I got home, I started mixing everything together. It was going smoothly and the kitchen was filled with the sweet smell of baking. But then, disaster struck. I was rushing to get the cake finished, and in a hurry, I took the wrong bag. Without even thinking, I put in what I thought was sugar, but it was actually salt!
The cake looked perfect when it came out-golden brown with a shiny top. The smell was so amazing that I couldn't wait to show it at the party. I imagined everyone was surprised at my baking skills and how impressed Emily would be. But little did I know, my cake was about to become the most memorable birthday cake ever.
The next day, I arrived at Emily's party with the cake. The moment came when we cut the cake. Emily, being the birthday girl, was the first to taste the cake. She carefully cut a piece, and with a big smile, she took the first bite (咬) .

But then her expression changed. Trying hard not to laugh, she looked at me, with her eyes widening in disbelief, “Are you sure this is a cake? ” I immediately took a bite myself. The moment the flavor hit my tongue, my heart dropped. I know something had gone terribly wrong and the entire room went dead silent. “I - uh - I think I used salt instead of sugar! ” I stammered, with my face turning bright red. Then as if planned, everyone burst out laughing.
Emily, however, quickly regained her composure (镇定) . “Thank you so much for making this cake, which made this birthday the most memorable one.” She winked at me, trying to make me feel better. I smiled, feeling grateful for her kindness and understanding. At that point, everyone who had been eagerly waiting for the cake rushed to try the salty surprise, all full of curiosity and excitement. I was soon involved in the cheerful atmosphere, realizing that true friendship is about accepting and supporting each other, even when things go wrong.

Passage 9
(24-25学年高一下•山东省泰安3月月考)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jacob believed Blanche, the little bird, could fly with his training. But Rex, his neighbor, did not share his enthusiasm and constantly joked about his attempts. “You got wings? Where are they?” He patted Jacob’s shoulder and laughed. Jacob shook his hand off and held on to the box.
The bird flapped (振翅) around and let out another cry. She hated being inside that box. But Jacob had to put her there to take her to the mountaintop and release her. The wind blew harder, icy-cold in their faces.
“That’s a strong wind,” said Rex, “Are you sure that pigeon can fly in this?”
“Blanche isn’t a pigeon, ” Jacob shouted.
Rex laughed, “Oh yeah, that’s right. A seagull (海鸥). One of those little things that hop by the sea.” His jokes continued, but Jacob tuned him out, his mind wandering back to the day he found Blanche on the shore. She hardly had any feathers and her eyes were almost completely shut. But Jacob touched her and she moved a little bit. So Jacob took her home.
Then he faced a new challenge: What to feed the baby bird? Jacob headed to the library and came across a book with a picture of a man feeding a baby bird milk. Desperate and willing to try anything, he gave it a shot …
All the way, Rex made one comment after another. Always the same thing. “That silly bird can’t fly. She’s lucky to be alive.” But Jacob remained firm in his belief. Now, with the box in hand, he felt a wave of determination. Blanche had already beaten the odds; he knew she could fly.
“So, what’s the plan?” Rex asked, a touch of doubt in his voice. “Just throw her off the top?” Jacob ignored the doubt in Rex’s tone, his focus only on Blanche and her approaching flight.
“I’ll help her,” Jacob replied. “I’ve been training her for two weeks.”
“Alright, alright, let’s do this,” Rex urged impatiently. “It’s freezing.”
Jacob placed the box on the grass and bent down to open it.

【答案】
“Come on, girl! Out you go,” Jacob encouraged her. “Saying your goodbyes?” Rex teased, a grin spreading across his lips. “Come on, girl! Go get your freedom!” Jacob urged, ignoring Rex’s irony, eyes sparkling with hope. But the seagull only stretched her head out at awkward angles, hesitant and unsure. Jacob then lifted the box higher, giving her a full view of the vast expanse that lay ahead. She let out a cry, yet dared not venture forth. “You can do it!” he whispered again, voice steady and reassuring. But the box seemed impossibly heavy in his hands, burdened by the invisible load of her fear.
Jacob was about to give up when he felt a sudden lightness in his hands. His spirits soared as he realized Blanche was finally taking the plunge. Her wings flapped around awkwardly, with no grace at all, but she persevered. She flew ahead, straight to the edge of the cliff. Jacob watched in horror as her small body dropped out of view, his heart pounding in his chest. The world seemed to fall silent, and so did Rex. They watched, breathless, as she vanished. Jacob and Rex exchanged glances, their faces lighting up with joy and relief as the seagull soared freely and gracefully in the chilly wind.

People often have a tough time dealing with their feelings of disappointment. That is when you should give them time and understanding and he or she just might come around before long.
I remember talking with my friend Avery about the coming school play Alices Adventure in Wonderland, which we both applied for. Avery had a talent for acting and she was anxious for playing Alice while for me I didn’t care what part I played as long as I would be in. However, when character list was posted, we were surprised to find that I got the part of Alice and Avery was chosen to act the rabbit. I guessed it was because I hadn’t been nervous at all during the audition (试演). But that situation really didn’t occur to me.
Then I asked Avery, “Do you want to come over after school and we can practice our lines?” “You mean, practice your lines?” Avery replied, not even looking at me. “No, thanks. I’m pretty busy this week.” I continued to ask if it would be OK for next week but her answer was negative and full of anger.
That night at dinner, after my parents congratulated me on getting the lead role, they asked how I felt. “Well, I can’t understand.” I said and told them about Avery’s reaction and I believed that she pretty much threw away our friendship.
“Hmm,” said my dad. “Arizona, don’t you think this might be an opportunity for you to be an extra-good friend?” “Dad’s right,” added my mom. “Sometimes when our friends do well, we feel envious (羡慕的) and don’t know how to act. Try giving her a little time and understanding. She’ll come around.”
Over the next week, I did my best to give Avery some space. I practised my lines but I knew I needed some help since my voice was not expressive enough. Day by day, Avery’s attitude seemed softened. As the rehearsal (彩排) day was near, I made a decision.

I was so grateful for her help and I could tell that she was happy to be able to help me.
Then came the big day. We both performed our parts perfectly and the audience was thrilled. After the show, Avery and I hugged each other and thanked each other for our help. When the shrill (尖锐的) ring of the phone echoed (回响) through the living room, Jane was still sleeping. She slowly opened her sleepy eyes and looked at the clock on the bedside table. It was already nine o’clock! Though still sleepy, Jane knew she had to get up because her mother had been working in her office day and night for several days and she couldn’t expect her younger brother Tom, who was sleeping like a pig, to answer the phone. She quickly put on a coat and dashed into the living room. As she picked up the receiver, on the other end came the warm greeting, “Good morning, my dear!”
It was the voice of her father, a sea man who seldom returned home due to his duties earning money to support the family. On hearing her father’s voice, Jane’s sleepiness disappeared.
Born in a not-so-rich family, Jane and Tom felt the stress of life, but they were happy to enjoy the family atmosphere. At school, they were straight-A students and took part in various after-school activities, earning the pride of their loved ones.
“Good morning, Dad. Why are you calling so early on a weekend?” Jane inquired, pretending to be slightly annoyed. “Tom and I have been very nice recently.” “My dear, today is your mother’s birthday. I have ordered a cake online and it will arrive at our doorstep in the late afternoon. Do remember to take the cake. It is my surprise for your mother.”
Upon hearing her father’s words, Jane felt a twinge of embarrassment. How could she have forgotten such an important day!
While chatting with her father, Jane’s gaze (凝视) wandered around the room and saw a lot of dirty clothes scattered (散落) on the sofa. The floor hadn’t been cleaned for a few days since her mother had been too busy with work this week to attend to such domestic matters.
Glancing at the clock again, Jane realized she still had enough time to prepare a surprise for her mother.
“Well, Dad, now I’m going to wake Tom up. We will give Mum a surprise, too!” Jane said and hung up the telephone.

Jane collected the clothes from sofa and began to do the laundry. Meanwhile, Tom was busy mopping the floor back and forth with all his strength, really aware of what hard work his Mum had at home! They had just finished the cleaning when the delivery boy came to the door. They took the cake and thanked him happily. It was a beautiful cake with a princess on it, enough to show the importance of Mom in Dad’s heart. Everything was ready for the big moment.
“Happy birthday, Mum!” Jane and Tom shouted when their mother opened the door. Confused and surprised, Mum stood frozen. When Mum realized what had happened, a warm current rose in her heart. Staring at the clean floor and the washed clothes and the big cake, she could hardly contain her excitement and hugged them tightly. “It is the best birthday gift I have ever had!” Mum said emotionally. Just then Jane took out her smartphone and took a happy video named Mum’s Birthday and sent it to Dad. What an unforgettable birthday!

However, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. He did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest.
Brian knew what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big pile of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into the backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded (折叠) an airplane. The winter of 1820 was a cold one for the Lincolns. It snowed nearly every day and the snow was high around their little farm house.
Abe was just a boy, but he had to help his father Tom around the farm. He looked after the house, milked the cow and prepared the dinner. It was hard work, and there wasn’t much fun for him and his brothers and sisters. Abe liked reading, but there was no book there. Abe was not happy. He was sad most of the time and seldom talked or smiled.
Mrs. Lincoln, Abe’s stepmother, really loved the boy. She noticed the boy’s silence and was concerned about him. She tried to think of ways to make Abe happy.
One day Mrs. Lincoln got up early in the morning. She took all the pennies from a small box. “I’m going to town tomorrow,” she said.
“You are going to town?” Tom asked. He was surprised. “That’s a long way. You see, the snow is thick. What are you going to do in town? Can’t you make it another day when the snow stops?”
“It’s a surprise. And I must go there tomorrow!” she said with a determined voice.
“Do you want Abe or me to go with you?” Tom asked his wife the next day.
“No, don’t worry, honey! I’ll be all right,” she said and went out of the house.

There I was stuck AGAIN. This was the same feeling that overwhelms me every year. But this year it was different, because if I failed this exam I would not graduate. I sat there, panic stricken, unable to move. Pressure crushed in on me. What if I could not go to high school? Would Dad and Mum kick me out of their house?
I took two deep breaths and looked up. I could see the teacher pacing up and down. The classroom was dead silent except for the clock. Tick Tock. Tick Tock. I checked the clock for the third time. Ten minutes left! I clenched (握紧) and unclenched my fist in an attempt to calm myself. Think! I told myself. I knew I could do this. My hand couldn’t help trembling. Then I scribbled (胡乱写下) the first few words that hit me.
“It isn’t my fault...”
I stared blankly at those words. At the comer of my eye, I could see my teacher walking towards me. She was checking on our progress! Dread built up within me. Then, I glanced at the four words again. Without any warning, my hand moved to write.
Hair on my arms stood as the teacher leaned in and started to read my work. I peered over to see my teacher’s expression, praying that my work had not brought in disappointment. To my astonishment, she displayed a clear satisfaction! That was good, wasn’t it? I hurriedly looked down at my essay.
I skimmed it through. I felt proud. Now, there’s something I was still worried about. I checked the clock. Two minutes left! I was still writing!
I bit my lip, took a deep breath, and concentrated on writing. I heard the teacher leave.
“There’s one minute left. Please check your work.” the teacher reminded us.

【答案】One possible version:
“One minute left?” I exclaimed. Everybody looked at me weirdly. I looked down, feeling ashamed. But I had to finish the paper. I tried to ignore everything and continue writing. One more word, I said to myself, come on. Just like this, I forced myself to concentrate and willed my hand to scribble whatever that popped up on my mind. “Time’s up! Put your pens down. Please hand in your test paper to me in the front.” the teacher announced. I finished! I put down my pen, breathing a sigh of relief, and then I stood up and limped towards the teacher to hand it in-my legs felt like noodles, thanks to the extreme tension.
A week later, the teacher handed the papers back to us. It was the time for truth! I folded my paper and held it tightly in my hands, shilly-shallying about whether to check the result in front of my classmates. Finally I decided I should face my fate bravely and unfolded it. It was an “A”! I could not believe my eyes. How could it be? It was the first time in my life that I had got an “A”. I turned to look at my teacher. Our eyes met. She nodded and gave me a big smile! At that point, I made a firm resolution: I’d be more hard-working and more confident, so that I wouldn’t be stuck and panic like this again in high school.

Passage 15
(24-25学年高一下•湖北省荆州3月月考)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Jack was new to Woodberry Forest School this year. He carried a secret burden: a stutter (口吃) that often brought about laughter from his classmates. This made him very upset. Shy and reserved. Jack chose to fade into the background rather than draw attention to himself. He felt like an outsider, never quite fitting in.
Jack was eager to exchange ideas with his classmates, but afraid of getting into trouble. Jack's science teacher, Katherine, a warm and caring woman often wearing a smile, noticed Jack's stutter and shyness. She observed how Jack struggled to express himself in class and how he would shy away when called upon to speak.
Determined to lend a hand, Katherine took Jack under her wing, encouraging him to embrace bravery and believe in his own abilities. Subsequently, Katherine adopted a set of systematic methods to help him. She was glad to find the potential in him, the intelligence and creativity that lay hidden beneath his stutter. Whenever possible, Katherine was always ready to praise his efforts, always declaring, "You are so great!” Whenever Jack stumbled over his words, Katherine always smiled at him encouragingly, providing him with the strength to continue. Day by day, Jack found himself speaking with greater confidence and fluency.
One day, Katherine announced that each student should give a presentation of a science project in front of the class. Jack's heart sank, the familiar fear and anxiety wrapping around him. How could he possibly stand before his classmates to give his ideas clearly, knowing that they would laugh at him? As the presentation drew near, Jack's anxiety mounted. Then came the big day. He watched his classmates take turns to walk up to the front. They gave their presentation with confidence and backed to their seats with satisfaction. However, while Jack was waiting for his turn, his heart beat so violently that he felt as if he were sitting on pins and needles.

【答案】
It was finally his turn. Jack stood up slowly and edged towards the front, his hands trembling. His classmates looked on, ready to see what was in store for Jack. He stood there tongue-tied with his face turning pale. When he looked around the classroom, Katherine was just smiling at him encouragingly. So Jack took a deep breath and concentrated on his presentation. Words flowed from his lips, despite some pauses and repetitions. He even added gestures to better express himself. It seemed that confidence had found him.
When Jack finished his presentation, the room erupted into applause. The applause washed over Jack, and with it came a wave of confidence. His grateful eyes met Katherine's, her smile now a symbol of his journey to self-assurance. No longer defined by his stutter, Jack felt a sense of belonging. His presentation wasn’t just an assignment; it was a testament to his ability to overcome personal obstacles. As the room quieted, Jack returned to his seat, his heart lighter, knowing that he had made a lasting impression on his classmates and himself.

Passage 16
(24-25学年高一下•湖北省襄阳3月月考)阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
“I’m going to miss you so much, Poppy,” said the tall, thin teenager. He bent down to hug his old friend goodbye. He stood up, hugged his parents, and smiled, trying not to let his emotions (情绪) get the better of him.
His parents were not quite able to keep theirs under control. They had driven their son several hours out of town to the university where he would soon be living and studying. It was time to say goodbye for now at least. The family hugged and smiled through misty eyes and then laughed.
The boy lifted the last bag onto his shoulder, and flashed a bright smile. “I guess this is it,” he said. “I’ll see you back home in a month, okay?” His parents nodded, and they watched as he walked out of sight into the crowds of hundreds of students and parents. The boy’s mother turned to the dog, “Okay, Poppy, time to go back home.”
The house seemed quiet as a tomb without the boy living there. All that week, Poppy didn’t seem interested in her dinner, her favourite toy, or even in her daily walk. Her owners were sad too, but they knew their son would be back to visit. Poppy didn’t.
They offered the dog some of her favorite peanut butter treats. They even let her sit on the sofa, but the old girl just wasn’t her usual cheerful self. Her owners started to get worried. “What should we do to cheer Poppy up?” asked Dad. “We’ve tried everything.”
“I have an idea, but it might be a little crazy,” smiled Mom. “Without anybody left in the house but us, this place could use a bit of fun. Let’s get a little dog for Poppy.”
It didn’t take long before they walked through the front door carrying a big box. Poppy welcomed them home as usual, but when she saw the box, she stopped. She put her nose on it. Her tail began wagging (摆动) ever so slowly, then faster as she caught the smell.

Dad opened the box and a sweet little dog appeared. Poppy was amazed. She wagged furiously. She barked with joy. She smiled, her tongue lolling out as she investigated the surprise. The little pup was not shy and immediately starting yipping and jumping around the older dog. “That didn’t take long,” remarked Mom, as both dogs went roaring around the house in an impromptu game of chase. Dad laughed.
A few weeks later, the boy arrived home from university. He had missed Poppy and was looking forward to seeing her. When he bent down to give her a big hug, he fell over in surprise as a small golden cloud came racing up to lick his face too. “Oh my gosh, who is this?” he exclaimed. His parents laughed at the look of shock on his face. “That’s Pee-wee,” said Dad. “I can’t believe you got yourselves a puppy!” “We didn’t,” replied Mom. “This puppy is for Poppy!”

Niesha could not forget the way she froze in front of the class today. Mr. Roberts had divided the class into groups to do presentations. Today was Niesha’s turn. However, her hands shook so violently that she couldn’t read her notes. Her voice became softer even to silence. Mr. Roberts kindly ended Niesha’s part of the presentation even though she did clearly not finish. He also asked Niesha to stay after class for a moment.
“Niesha, I know you’re shy, but you worked hard on this project. I’d hate to see you give up on yourself.” Then Mr. Roberts hesitated, “If I give you another chance until tomorrow, do you think you can find your courage?” Niesha nodded, grateful for the chance. She went as quickly as she could to her next class. She kept her head down and hoped the school day would end soon.
When she reached her back steps that afternoon, she could see an inviting light coming from the kitchen windows. Momma was baking. Momma studied Niesha’s face as she came into the kitchen. “What’s wrong, Niesha?”
Tears shone in Niesha’s brown eyes. She told her the whole story. Momma was silent for a moment, her hands still busy with the cake. “Why is it that you can talk to me about anything and everything, but you can’t talk to your class?” Momma asked. She set the timer (计时器) and then said, “Let me show you something.”
Niesha followed Momma to her bedroom. There Momma showed her a book filled with newspaper clippings (剪报) and pictures. In it there was a blue ribbon (丝带) that said “First Place” and a picture of herself when she was very young, standing with her parents.
“I won it for public speaking. I started the school year as the shyest girl on the speech team, but I ended the year as the blue ribbon winner. It wasn’t easy at first-- I was not sure of myself at all. I worked hard, and mostly I faced my fears. You just need to find your courage.”

【答案】One possible version:
Hearing Momma’s words, Niesha stared at the precious blue ribbon, lost in thought. She pictured the scene where her mom tried her best to overcome her fears and gathered all her courage to deliver a fantastic speech to the audience. And Momma, aware of Neisha’s inner confusion and anxiety, reached out her hand to tie the blue ribbon onto Niesha’s wrist with a sweet smile, saying she would be with her all the time. Greatly touched and determined to find her courage, Neisha stood in front of the mirror, constantly practicing from pronunciation to tone and even each gesture. “Try harder, and I can make it!” she kept cheering herself up.
The next day Niesha again walked to the front of the classroom to give her presentation. Still shy and nervous, she customarily lowered her head to avoid making eye contact with others, numb there for seconds. But shortly afterwards, courage found its way back the moment she caught sight of the blue ribbon. Comforted and inspired, she took a deep breath, straightened her shoulders and then got started, “Dear fellow students, ...” While presenting herself, Niesha glanced at Mr. Roberts smiling at her and listening attentively. A spark of joy flashing across her eyes, she knew for sure that she had found her courage, in the mill and in the adversity.

Aram and Rossi’s Bakery
Walking along the narrow brick sidewalk, Aram took a deep breath. The air smelled of lemons and baked bread and coffee, coming from Rossi’s Italian Bakery. He was almost there.
Aram still couldn’t believe his luck. All his friends were working boring summer jobs—waiting tables and babysitting. And here he was, about to start as an actual baker’s assistant, doing what he loved. It was all thanks to his Aunt Rita. She knew Mrs Rossi and had arranged everything. It was the perfect experience for his future career. Rossi’s Bakery, he was sure, would one day be known as the place where he got his start.
Ah, here he was—the bakery. A faded wooden sign over the door read “Rossi’s Bakery.” Aram straightened his shoulders and entered. Mrs Rossi was sitting at the counter, looking old and wise. Aram greeted her and stuck out his hand. Mrs Rossi looked at it for a second before turning around and waving him inside. “I’m ready to learn everything,” Aram said.
“Great. Let’s start with the cash register,” Mrs Rossi said, “because that’s what you’ll be doing.” She showed him how to use the cash register. It wasn’t hard. The pastry trays were all marked by price, and there weren’t that many choices anyway. “That’s it?” Aram said, his heart sinking. “But when do we bake?”
“Bake? I order wholesale now. No more baking. I’m too old.” Then Mrs Rossi silently held up her hands. Aram took in her knotted, swollen fingers, and he understood. A wave of disappointment struck him. Sadness overwhelmed him so suddenly that he couldn’t think of a word to say.
He sighed, and Mrs Rossi sighed, too. “I used to bake it all. Bread and cakes. And no one did it better than me. But that was when these things worked,” said Mrs Rossi holding up her hands once more and glancing across the shelves filled with empty bottles labelled with names of the various ingredients (配料) she once used. Suddenly she came alive, waving her arthritic (关节炎的) hands. “People used to line up around the corner. Everyone wanted my baked bread.”

【答案】
Then a thought occurred to Aram that he could ask Mrs Rossi to teach him. But he was not sure whether Mrs Rossi liked the idea or not. Thinking that if he didn't put it forward, he would be dealing with the boring cash register for the whole summer, Aram hesitated no more. “Mrs Rossi, I'm wondering if I could have the privilege to be your apprentice.” Mrs Rossi looked at him and then his hands. Aram continued. “I was fascinated by the pure magic with which you mixed those ingredients and turned them into pieces of art. Would you teach me to be your magical hands?” Aram’s eyes glittered with passion.
Mrs Rossi finally said, “Let’s buy the ingredients first.” On hearing this, Aram felt over the moon. Delightedly, they shut the door and headed for the supermarket. Two hours later those empty bottles were full again. With the long options ingredients inside, Mrs Rossi seemed as overjoyed and hopeful as Aram. At the end of the summer, neighbors were seen lining up round the corner outside the Rossi’s. Two years later, a new wooden sign was hung over the door, reading “Aram and Rossi’s Bakery”.

During my school years, I had only close friend. We spent years together, and we were inseparable, in or out of school. But the Greg moved away, and I never thought it would take more than 40 years to bring us together again.
As children, Greg and I dove into everything with passion. At that time, we were pure and kind, full of curiosity and expectation for life. We raced our bikes and illustrated (给书加插图) our own comic books. We even became attracted to the same girl from around the corner, a sixth -grader named Joanne who barely (几乎不) knew we existed.
The last times a Greg was sometime in 1966. It was so short a meeting that I couldn’t recall saying goodbye before he moved. Since then, we lost touch.
But then, a few summers ago, I saw a familiar woman. “Excuse me. Would your name happen to be Joanne?”
“Uh, yes...” She didn’t recognise me until I explained who I was. We hadn’t exchanged more than a few dozen words in our entire lifetime. “Have you stayed in touch with Greg?” she asked. I was surprised she even knew of our friendship.
“No. I haven’t,” I admitted. “I wish I had.”
Back at the office I checked my messages. I received one email, and then read it from start to finish. The email was from Greg.
Greg had tracked me down through social media. He was now married, had two children and had become a musician and entrepreneur (企业家). We exchanged several emails before connecting by phone. A month later, my wife and I drove to meet Greg and his family in person.

【答案】One possible version:
Standing in front of his house, I began to get nervous. I didn’t know what to say or do. So much time had passed and a lot of memories seemed to have been blurred. But after hugs and introductions, the years dissolved as we exchanged stories about our lives. I had brought along the only picture I could find containing the two of us from my sixth birthday. The picture is a witness to our friendship in the past.
Seeing the photo, Greg handed me a small, old card. It was written “Greg’s invitation to my sixth birthday party”, signed “From Donnie” in faded blue crayon. Although the card had turned yellow, it could be seen that he kept it carefully for many years. There were a few other things shared that evening, but none as meaningful as the invitation and the picture. They were stored apart but saved for the reunion of two old friends. True friendship does not fade with time.

My family had only recently moved into a new neighborhood. All of my neighbors have been very friendly and helpful since we moved in.
However, Mrs Davis, an elderly lady living in the last house on the other side of the road, escaped associating with us, or anyone else. When I asked around the neighborhood why, they warned me not to go after her because they thought she was insane (精神失常的) and preferred staying alone after losing her husband and only daughter in an aircraft crash. After that, she stayed isolated (孤立的) from all the neighbors, refusing all the care and help.
I often saw her on the streets during the evening, but she was always by herself. She appeared weak and I always wanted to help her, but after hearing what my neighbors had said about her, I wasn’t sure whether I should.
One day, when I was on my way to the supermarket, our paths crossed. I was walking past her and overheard her singing a tune. It immediately drew my attention because my parents used to sing the same song with me. I began to sing along with her, and she smiled at me for the first time. But when I smiled back, she quickly hurried her pace and went home.
She seemed very different to me that day. I refused to trust my neighbors’ claims that she had cut herself off from the rest of society because she was insane, so the next day, I knocked on her door. Mrs Davis was home, and instead of letting me in, she just looked at me silently through the window. I noticed her staring at me and was about to walk to the window when she quickly closed the curtains.
The next day, I revisited her house. “Hello, I brought you something,” I called out to her. “It’s the record of the music you were singing yesterday.”

【答案】参考范文:
The door opened and Mrs Davis’ eyes widened in surprise at the sight of me standing there. I held out the record, “I thought you might enjoy this.” Mrs Davis slowly took it from my hands, staring at it. For a moment, she seemed lost in memories. “Thank you,” she whispered. Then I was invited into her house, feeling a sense of connection blossoming between us. “I used to listen to this song with my husband and daughter. It was their favorite,” she shared stories of her love for music, and the pain of her loss. When I left her house, I offered to hug her, and Mrs Davis’ eyes shone with newfound hope.
Several days later in the morning, the doorbell rang at my house. Surprising and delightful, it was Mrs Davis! She stood at our doorstep, holding a tray of freshly baked cookies, her eyes sparkling with warmth, “I wanted to thank you for bringing light to my life.” I replied excitedly, “I’m just more than glad to see you.” Gradually, Mrs Davis no longer cut herself from the world and she became a regular visitor to my house, also finding her way back to the community that cared for her. Sometimes, I realized that all it took was a small act of kindness to break down the barriers of loneliness.

Passage 6
(23-24高一下·湖北华师一附中·期中)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

He got the perfect opportunity to fulfill his desire but he was in a dilemma (两难境地) as for the competition he needed special paints and some brushes. He didn’t have the courage to ask his mother for money as he knew her prejudice against art.
That evening his mom returned from work and handed him a few paper notes, saying, “This is for your lunch at school next month.” The money was enough for his desired materials! John’s face lit up.

Passage 10

Walking in the snow was difficult. It took Mrs. Lincoln a long time to get to town. She bought something in town and wrapped it carefully. Then she started back.

Passage 14

Passage 19

Passage 20
