Fortune cookies are in Chinese restaurants throughout the United States. It's rather satisfying to crack open a cookie at the end of your meal and read your “lucky fortune” on the slip of paper inside. The exact origin of the fortune cookie is unknown. It is thought that the tasty snack was the first introduced into San Francisco in 1914, after an immigrant began distributing the cookie with “thank you” notes in them. These “thank you” notes were intended as symbols of appreciation for friends who stood with him through the economic hardship and discrimination of his early life in America. 37 There is an alternate origin story. Los Angeles is regarded as the site of the fortune cookie's invention. In this version of the story, David Jung, a Chinese immigrant residing in L.A., is thought to have created the cookie in order to uplift the spirits of the poor and homeless. In 1918, Jung handed out the cookies for free to the poor outside his shop and each cookie contained a strip of paper with an inspirational sentence printed on it. 38 Fortune cookies first began to gain popularity in mainstream American culture during WWⅡ. Chinese restaurants would serve them in place of desserts, as desserts were not popular in traditional Chinese cuisine. Today fortune cookies are not tied to ChineseAmerican culture. In fact, the largest fortune cookie manufacturer is located in the United States and it produces 4.5 million fortune cookies a day—an evidence to the modernday popularity of the snack. However, an attempt to introduce the fortune cookie to China in 1992 was a failure, and the cookie was cited for being “too American”. 39 So the next time you break open a fortune cookie and read a fortune about the many successes you should expect in your future, remember that the conclusion to your Chinese restaurant meal may not be as Chinese as you think. 40 24.What do we know about fortune cookies? While 5G is set to be used in some limited areas of America this year, much of the world is not expected to receive widely used service until 2023. One project in Britain, however, is already testing this super fast technology on an unlikely group Internet users—cows. The project was developed by American technology company Cisco Systems, Inc. It also receives money from the British government. Cisco says the program seeks to explore the future of 5G in countryside areas around the world. 45 Testing areas were set up at farms in 3 countryside areas of England. The cows are equipped with 5G devices (装置) that connect to a robotic milking (挤奶) system, which uses sensors (传感器) and machine learning to fully automate the process. System designers say technology takes over after a cow feels ready to be milked and walks towards an automatic gate. During the milking, machines give food for the cow as a reward. Other 5G technology tools include automated brushes that turn on when the cow rubs up (蹭) against them. Sensors also control the amount of light to the cows living areas depending on the weather. And, an automatic feeding system makes sure the animals always have enough to eat. 46 Duncan Forbes, head of a governmentfunded agricultural engineering organization, told Reauters that the project shows the farm's cow operation can be greatly improved with 5G technology and that the experiment provided strong evidence that 5G technology can be widely used in the future, not just on farms in Britain, but in countryside across the world. 47 28.What is the aim of Cisco Systems Inc's project? A.The project. B.The company. C.The technology. D.The group. 根据第三段第三句“It also receives money from the British government.”可知,指示代词It指代的是上文“The project was developed by American technology company Cisco Systems, Inc.”中的“The project”。故选A。 30.What can we learn about 5G according to the text? A.It is no worse than 4G in terms of speed. B.It is already widely used all over the world. C.It has made improvements in operating the cows. D.It is based on sensors and machine learning. 根据第六段中的“the project shows the farm's cow operation can be greatly improved with 5G technology”可知,该项目已经证明了5G技术可以大大改善该农场的奶牛饲养。 31.In which part of a newspaper may this text appear? A.Entertainment. B.Lifestyle. C.Education. D.Technology. D The Tokyo Summer Olympics is going green. The 5,000 medals Japan has made are more special than most. One novel focus of the Tokyo Olympics is to be “sustainable”—to avoid using too many natural resources, so that the games are easy on the environment. As part of this goal, the organizers decided to make all of the Olympic medals out of metal recycled from old electronics. 52 Almost all electronics are made with small amounts of “precious metals”, like gold and silver. But collecting enough of these metals to make 5,000 medals was a huge challenge. That's because the amount of metal in each device is tiny. It would take about 20,000 cell phones to get just 1 kilogram of gold. Beginning in April 2017, the organizers placed collection boxes around the country, and asked people to turn in their old electronic devices. Soon people began to respond to the initiative, turning in smartphones, digital cameras, handheld games, and laptops. At first, collection went slowly, but soon more and more areas began to take part. By the end, 1,621 local governments had helped out with the collection process. 53 Then came the job of breaking those devices down into smaller pieces. After being taken apart and sorted, the small electronics were smelted (熔炼) to get all the gold, silver, and bronze elements. This is a tricky job, which calls for careful attention and good skill. It's also dangerous, because some of the metals and other things aren’t safe for people to touch or breathe. 54 By the end of March, 2019, the organizers had hit their targets of getting enough metal for the medals. They had collected around 32 kilograms of gold, 4,100 kilograms of silver and 2,200 kilograms of bronze. And now all the 5,000 medals are available for the wouldbe winners. 55 32.What can we know about the Tokyo Olympics medals? A.They are hugely valuable. B.They are of high quality. C.They are designed uniquely. While all airplanes can fly, some are able to fly farther than others. This is because not all airplanes are built the same. For example, a fighter plane looks very different from a plane that people fly in when they want to go on a holiday. The teachers wondered how they could make students understand this. 89 Then, the science teacher, Mr Moose, decided that the school should have a paper airplane contest. Every student would design a paper airplane. They would stand in a line in the playground behind the school. The students would take turns throwing their airplanes. The student whose airplane went the farthest would win. When Mr Moose announced the paper airplane contest to the students, they were very excited. A student named Paul, who was on the school sports team, said to everyone else that his airplane would win. “I am the strongest,” Paul said. “So I will be able to throw my airplane the farthest.” However, while Paul was saying this, another student, Brian, was thinking how he could win. Brian did not play any sports and was not very strong. But he loved airplanes and really wanted to win the contest. 90 Brian realized what he had to do. He went to the store and bought a big stack (叠) of paper. When he got home, he took the paper into his backyard. He took a piece of paper and folded an airplane. It didn't go very far, so Brian took another piece and folded another airplane and threw it. This airplane went a little farther. Brian kept folding different kinds of airplanes and throwing them. Some went very far and some did not. Finally, when Brian had used all the paper, he walked up to the airplane that had flown the farthest and picked it up. The next day was the contest. All the students lined up. Everyone took turns. After a while, everyone had thrown except Paul and Brian. Paul went first. With a loud yell, he threw the airplane into the sky. It went farther than every other airplane. Everyone cheered. Finally, it was Brian's turn. ﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍﹍ Brian won because he tried out many solutions to the problem of how to make an airplane fly very far. 第四部分 93 [精彩范文] Finally, it was Brian's turn. Brian took the airplane that he had picked up the day before. He walked up to the line and, with all his strength, he threw the plane. It went flying, farther and farther, until finally it landed—10 feet past Paul's plane! The whole school cheered. Brian won the contest. Mr Moose gave him a prize: a toy airplane. Brian won because he tried out many solutions to the problem of how to make an airplane fly very far. He did this by testing out many different designs and comparing the results. When he found the design that worked best—the paper airplane that flew the farthest—he used it. Because Brian tried a lot of designs, he was able to make up for his lack of strength and beat Paul. Text one, i'm new in town and i'll be coming to this store often.
