America’s Best Towns to Visit
This summer, we’re looking at cities where you’ll find small-town tones and plenty to see and do for a few days or more. Here are our four picks:
●Duluth
A small city best known over the years as an industrial, ore (矿)-shipping port on the Great Lakes, Duluth is now gaining a reputation as a shelter from the climate crisis. Its summers are typically quite mild thanks to its setting alongside Lake Superior. The hilly city offers a series of lakeside attractions and a dynamic neighborhood showcasing handmade goods.
●Obispo
If you’re dreaming of a relaxed, old-fashioned California atmosphere, the expensive Bay Area and traffic-heavy Obispo might not be the best choices. But there is a place that brings back the laid-back feel of 20th-century California. Here, you can enjoy activities like wine tasting and hiking without large crowds. The beautiful natural surroundings, with the Pacific Ocean nearby, are the perfect finishing touch.
●Portland
This historic harbor town offers some seriously up-to-date dining. The food scene here has put it squarely on the map as a cuisine destination. You’ll also find a booming craft beer scene and tons of opportunities to get out onto the water. Touring the busy center offers a window into centuries of history.
●Providence
Providence’s rivers have been dancing in the firelight of beloved art facility Water Fire for decades. The city is also home to the famous Rhode Island School of Design and its museum. Architecture lovers will find plenty to admire, and Providence’s cuisine history and diverse restaurants mean you’ll be treated to a global feast (盛宴).
21. Which city should you visit if you want to escape the summer heat?
A. Duluth. B. Obispo. C. Portland. D. Providence.
22. What is a highlight of Obispo?
A. Attractive natural beauty. B. Affordable living expenses.
C. Conservative atmosphere. D. Light-loaded traffic.
23. What do Portland and Providence have in common?
A. They have a fairly long history. B. They feature well-designed buildings.
C. They serve as good food destinations. D. They offer outdoor water activities.

The Rift House primary school in Hartlepool gives all its children free breakfasts, PE kits and stationery (文具) , but beds were a stretch too far. However, that is about to change thanks to a charitable project led by another local head, which was launched last week and aims to deliver 10,000 new beds to children in the Tees Valley in the next three years.
Mark Tilling, head of a secondary school in Hartlepool, has worked with local businesses and run fund-raising events to raise £70,000 to get the Tees Valley project off the ground. He has partnered with Zarach, a local charity, which has given thousands of beds to poor children. The fact that this is needed at all makes Tilling angry. “In the 21st century, we shouldn’t be talking about kids without food or beds,” he said. “How do we get good results for children in school if they don’t have beds to sleep in?”
In the Tees Valley project, schools will refer families that they know are in need of a bed for their kids. A lot of those they will be helping here are the working poor, who aren’t on benefits and don’t have any services supporting them. Each new bed the charity gives out, designed to last the child for eight years, also comes with a duvet (羽绒被) , bedding, new nightclothes and toiletries. McGrath, the project leader, explained, “Some parents don’t have a washing machine to wash bedding, or they may struggle to get things dry in a house that is already damp.” In Hartlepool, the first new beds went out to “delighted” children from the warehouse last week.
Eddie Huntington, an education expert, said that schools are in a good position to spot signs that families are seriously struggling with poverty. “When other people can walk away, schools can’t,” he said. “Teachers and pastoral (生活辅导的) workers in schools are now at the heart of social care, whether we like it or not.”
24. What does Mark Tilling think of kids lacking beds today?
A. Unacceptable. B. Doubtful. C. Strange. D. Awkward.
25. What can we know about the beds offered by Tees Valley?
A. They are mostly second-hand beds.
B. They are equally given to most families.
C. They are equipped with additional items.
D. They are designed for medium-height kids.
26. What role do teachers and pastoral workers play?
A. They manage financial aid programs.
B. They evaluate academic performances.
C. They organize after-class activities for students.
D. They help identify families in financial trouble.
27. In which column of a newspaper may the text appear?
A. Finance. B. Education. C. Health. D. Culture.

Climate change is increasingly challenging the world of sports, with rising temperatures and extreme weather conditions threatening the existence of sports events globally. Athletes like triathlete Pragnya Mohan have been forced to relocate their training to cope with unbearable heat, while others, including discus thrower Sam Mattis, face extreme temperatures during competitions. Such conditions not only affect athlete performance but also pose a threat to the continued existence of certain sports.
At the UN climate summit in Baku, experts underlined the urgent need to address climate change’s impact on sports. Events are being interrupted by unusual weather patterns, as seen in the Paris Olympics, where triathlons were delayed due to water quality issues from heavy rain. In response, some sports organizations and clubs are beginning to take action. Soccer clubs have joined forces to reduce emissions and engage fans in climate awareness, emphasizing the role sports can play in advocating environmental responsibility. These efforts illustrate the crucial role that organized sports can have in promoting and supporting sustainable practices.
However, large-scale efforts can sometimes seem less impactful due to conflicting priorities and the financial interests tied to major sports events. These factors hinder real progress in sports-related climate advocacy and reveal the complexities involved in combining global sports practices with environmental initiatives.
Climate change is also increasing the costs associated with sports, widening the gap between rich and less rich athletes. As certain regions become unsuitable for training due to weather extremes, athletes face increased travel and training expenses, creating a widening socioeconomic divide. To adapt, sports events are shifting to cooler times or new locations. However, these measures only partially address the broader issues. Technologies like air-conditioned stadiums, used in the Qatar World Cup, provide temporary relief but are not sustainable.
As sports wrestle with climate change, athletes and organizations must innovate to reduce their environmental footprint. A joint effort is essential to make sure sports can continue to boom in a changing world, offering fair opportunities while promoting sustainability, with an emphasis on long-term, impactful solutions.
28. Why are Pragnya Mohan and Sam Mattis mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To demonstrate physical challenges world athletes face.
B. To praise their achievement in reducing climate change.
C. To display their excellent performance in competitions.
D. To show the bad effects climate change has on sports.
29. What does the underlined word “hinder” mean?
A. Discover. B. Achieve. C. Deny. D. Block.
30. What might be the impact of climate change on sports?
A. It narrows the skill gap between athletes.
B. It raises the training costs for sports events.
C. It promotes equality among sports participants.
D. It increases the number of international events.
31. What does the author imply in the last paragraph?
A. Innovative technology is key in sports competitions
B. Cooperation is needed to ensure the sports’ survival
C. Organizations should offer athletes fair opportunities.
D. The solutions made now are short-term and low-impact.
D
Future astronauts could enjoy a nutritionally perfect diet made from bacteria brought up on broken pieces of asteroids (小行星), to produce a kind of milkshake.
While astronauts on the International Space Station have experimented with growing salad leaves, the vast majority of food consumed in space is transported from Earth. This would be impossible for more distant, longer-lasting missions, so Pearce, a scientist, decided to try using bacteria to change carbon-containing compounds (复合物) from asteroids into eatable food.
They have yet to carry out this process using real asteroids, but Pearce and his team have performed similar experiments using bacteria to break down plastic from leftover army supplies. To do this, they heated the plastic in the absence of oxygen, and then fed this to a mixture of bacteria that eat carbon.
The collective bacteria end up looking “something like a brown milkshake”, says Pearce. While that might not sound too appetizing, the bacteria are remarkably well-suited for human needs. “We did a nutritional analysis and it turned out to be almost a perfect food,” he says.
If the idea is sound, a 500-metre-wide asteroid similar to Bennu, which NASA visited in 2020 could feed between 600 and 17,000 astronauts for a year. The exact number would depend on how efficiently the bacteria can digest the asteroid’s carbon compounds.
A fully operational asteroid food project will require an “industrial-sized super machine in space but the researchers hope to test the idea on a smaller scale in the coming year, starting off with coal and then moving to space rocks that have fallen to Earth, which they are currently working on a proposal for.
“There is definitely potential there, but it is still a very futuristic and exploratory idea,” says Professor Annemiek. “It is good to think about these things, but in terms of technique, there is still quite some development necessary before these methods can be used.”
32. What can we learn from the experiment?
A. It has already been conducted on real asteroids.
B The final product is unappealing but nutritious.
C. The plastic is heated in the presence of oxygen.
D. The bacteria can be used to make novel plastic.
33. What do the numbers listed in Paragraph 5 indicate?
A. The experiment is practicable. B. The size of Bennu is big enough.
C. The new idea is of great potential. D. The bacteria have some limitations
34. What is Annemiek’s attitude towards the idea?
A. Ambiguous. B. Disapproving. C. Objective. D. Satisfied.
35. What’s the best title for the text?
A. Dining on Asteroids: A New Frontier. B. Space Travel: A Dream to Come True.
C. Asteroids Offer Humans Healthier Food. D. Bacteria Work as Tools to Change Carbon.

Love Conquered Alzheimer’s Disease
Shirley was a white-collar worker who always spared time to accompany her single father at weekends. They took a walk in the nearby park, climbed mountains, and dined out. But as Shirley’s father grew older, he occasionally forgot things. In the beginning, it was things that didn’t matter, such as where he left his smartphone or what the neighbor’s name was. However, one year later, his condition became worse. He was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默病).The doctor’s advice was that Shirley should remind her father of the time they spent together, which might relieve his symptoms, although there was no cure for the disease.
Though having no medical background, Shirley had heard about the disease many times. She also sensed that her father was becoming more eccentric (古怪的). He would forget her name and the way home. It was uneasy for Shirley to watch her father struggle, but she had to work in the daytime.
One day, in order to ensure that her father had had lunch, Shirley called him up. But no one answered on the other side. She was worried and took half a day off. When she arrived at home, there was no one. Without the slightest hesitation, Shirley left the house to search for her father. All of a sudden, Shirley’s phone rang. The strange phone number drew her attention. She prayed that her father would be safe and sound. The call was from a policeman, who told her that her father was in the hospital due to a car accident, and that he wasn’t able to come home.
After hanging up the phone, Shirley drove to the hospital, seeing that her father was lying on the bed, with his face pale. Walking closer to him, Shirley noticed that he was grasping a watch. “Dad, why do you grasp the watch? It will make you tired,” asked Shirley. At the same time, she tried taking the watch off his hands. Unexpectedly, he grasped it more tightly.

【66题答案】
【答案】I would like to suggest introducing a gardening course at our school. This practical course would enable students to learn how to plant flowers, grow vegetables, and maintain a school garden.
I have several reasons for this suggestion. First, gardening allows us to connect with nature and better understand environmental protection. Second, taking care of plants helps relieve stress from our intense studies. Third, the vegetables we grow can be used in our school canteen, which makes our meals fresher and healthier.
I expect this course will help create a greener campus and teach us valuable life skills. More importantly, through gardening, we can develop patience and responsibility while enjoying the satisfaction of watching our plants grow.
第二节(满分25分)
【67题答案】
【答案】“Don’t take away the watch my daughter bought me,” shouted her father: Shirley was surprised to hear him mention her. Although he often forgot her name, at that moment, he remembered the watch and connected it to her. Her heart was filled with both sadness and joy. She gently held his hand and said softly, “Dad, it’s me, Shirley. I’m here for you.” He seemed puzzled but didn’t resist. Shirley realized that the watch was precious to him because it reminded him of their special bond.
As her father calmed down, Shirley suddenly thought of the doctor’s advice. She pulled out a photo album she had prepared earlier. It was full of pictures capturing their happy times together. Sitting by his side, she pointed at each photo, telling him stories about those moments. Sometimes, he would smile or nod, recognizing a familiar face or place.
