When World War I broke out, Priestley joined the army, and escaped death on a number of occasions. After the war, he gained a degree from Cambridge University, and then moved to London, where he worked as a freelance writer. During World War II, he presented a weekly radio programme, which became immensely popular. Priestley wrote many successful articles, essays, novels and plays, but is best remembered for his play An Inspector Calls. I was nearly as excited about it this morning as the children, whom I found all looking through the window at the magic outside and talking away as excitedly as if Christmas had suddenly come round again. The fact is, however, that the snow was as strange and ________(fascinate) to me as it was to them. It is the first fall we have had here this winter, and last year was out of the country, sweating in a hot climate, during the snowy season, so that it really does seem an age since I saw the ground so fantastically ________(carpet). whose an fascinating carpeted Para 1 1.___________就... 独特的n._______ 3.___________________一场小雪 4.at the risk of____冒着...的风险____risk处于风险中 risk_____sth冒着做某事的风险 5.insist v. ~that... ①坚持说/认为,从句用陈述语序 ②坚持要求/主张,从句用虚拟语气(should) do eg. The dining-room window had been transformed into lovely Japanese print. The little plum tree outside, with the faintly flushed snow lining its branches and artfully disposed along its trunk, stood in full sunlight. through made Then Para 3 1.come out________come about________ 2.flush v._______ blush v._______ 3._______________被转变成 4.dispose ①v. 使倾向于;使有意于~ sb __________ sth使某人倾向于 -__________n. 处置/支配 4.____full sunlight阳光普照 5._______________到... By the time I got to the station, the train________(go). By the time you get back,we________(finish) the work. 一阵强烈情感 a~ of+情绪名词+flood/sweep over sb 脸红 ~ with+情绪名词 eg.She flushed with shyness. 从句 主句 一般过去时 一般现在时 be transformed into of to/towards disposal at in by the time had gone will finish /will have finished 过去完成时 一般将来时/将来完成时 An hour or two later everything was a cold sparkle of white and blue. The world had ________(complete) changed again. The little Japanese prints had all disappeared. I looked out of my study window, over the garden, the field, to the low hills beyond, and the ground went on and on, the sky was thick grey, and all the trees so many black and threatening shapes. There was indeed something curiously ________(disturb) about the whole prospect. It was as if our kindly countryside, close to the very heart of England, had been turned into a cruel grassland. At any moment, it seemed, a body of horsemen might be seen breaking out from the black trees, so many weapons might be heard and some distant spot of snow be reddened. It was that kind of landscape. completely disturbing Para 4 1._______v.威胁-__________adj.威胁的-________adj.感到害怕的 -_______n.威胁 be a ~____是对...的威胁 2.disturb v.干扰;打扰-__________adj.令人不安的-________adj. 残忍的-________n.残忍-_________adv.残忍地 5.as if/though仿佛 eg.They talks to them as if they were children. eg.Some people,on losing job,may feel as if it were the end of the world. But the snow is falling heavily, in great soft _____(flake), so that you can hardly see across the shallow valley, and the roofs are thick and the trees all bending, and the weathercock of the village church, still to be seen through the grey loaded air, has become some creature out of Hans Andersen. From my study,______ is apart from the house and faces it, I can see the children flattening their noses against the window, and there is running through my head rhyme I used ________(repeat) when I was a child and flattened my nose against the cold window to watch the falling snow: Snow, snow faster: White alabaster! Killing geese in Scotland, Sending feathers here! flakes which to repeat
