The Chaná language, a native language of Argentina, was thought to be extinct for over 200 years. However, it has now been discovered that one man has been keeping it alive.
Unknown to the world, Blas Jaime, an 89 year old Argentinian man, has kept the language from dying out. Thanks to the efforts of linguist Viegas Barros, Jaime was discovered, and the pair have now authored a book together, dedicated to restoring the language.
Blas learnt the Chaná language from his mother, whose family has passed the language down through the generations. Growing up, Blas’s mother taught him the Chaná language and stories which she urged him to keep secret in order to “protect” them. Decades later when Blas retired he sought out other Chaná people to chat and share the stories with. However, he made the shocking discovery that no one else appeared to know the language. In fact, scholars had actually considered the language extinct since 1815.
Blas said, “I exist. I am here,” kicking off a new mission to preserve and bring the Chaná language back to life, while also helping to place the indigenous (本土的) group back on the map. Over the past two decades, Blas has worked closely with UNESCO to help preserve languages. Together with Viegas Barros, the pair have created a dictionary with over 1,000 words.
Argentina has a complex history that has led to a disconnection between modern-day Argentinians and their indigenous roots. However, Blas’ work has inspired many other indigenous people in Argentina to explore their ancestry and history. “Language is what gives you identity... If someone doesn’t have their language, they’re not a people,” said Blas.
Blas’s daughter, Evangelina Jaime, has taken up the responsibility of preserving the Chaná language and culture learned from her father, ensuring that this vital piece of cultural heritage is not lost. Although the exact number of Chaná people remaining in Argentina is uncertain, the efforts of Evangelina and others like her are helping to keep the Chaná language and culture alive and flowering.
4. What took the language scholars by surprise?
A. The roots of the Chaná language.
B. The rediscovery of an extinct language.
C. The history of the modern-day Argentinians.
D. The existence of the indigenous Chaná people.
5. Why were Blas’ words mentioned in paragraph 5?
A. To remind Argentinians to seek their roots.
B. To illustrate the wisdom of indigenous people.
C. To guarantee the conservation of a cultural heritage.
D. To promote the popularity of an endangered language.
6. What can we know from the last paragraph?
A. Most Argentinians will connect with their origins.
B. Evangelina is key to the spread of the Chaná language.
C. Few Chaná people participate in the preservation efforts.
D. The Chaná cultural heritage will survive and grow stronger.
7. Which of the following best describes Blas Jaime?
A. Strong-willed and sympathetic. B. Responsible and devoted.
C. Determined and talented. D. Warm-hearted and ambitious.
B 5. A 6. D 7. B

Intermittent fasting (间歇性禁食) has taken off in popularity in recent years as an alternative to more traditional weight loss advice including counting calories, which can be cumbersome and hard to sustain for some people. It can take different forms. One approach — called time-restricted eating — limits when people eat to a specific window of time, often around six to eight hours.
Some research suggests this can be successful for weight loss in the short term because people end up eating less, but it has been less clear how well it works over a longer stretch of time. A new study published Monday may have an answer.
The study, led by Krista Varady, a professor of nutrition at the University of Illinois Chicago, finds that intermittent fasting can indeed help people lose weight and keep it off over the course of a year. The amount of weight loss wasn’t dramatic — equivalent (相等的) to about 5% of body weight — but the findings are encouraging to researchers in the field, in part because they stress that people could keep this habit up over a long stretch of time.
Varady’s team recruited 90 adults with obesity (肥胖) from the Chicago area and randomly assigned them to one of three groups: One group could eat only between noon and 8 pm, another had to count calories and cut daily energy intake by 25%, and the third group didn’t make any changes to their eating.
The study found that those who did time-restricted eating lost, on average, about 10 pounds more than those in the control group, while those who counted their calories lost about 12 pounds more. The difference between the two groups wasn’t statistically significant. “The key take-away is that you can basically achieve the same amount of energy restriction by counting time instead of counting calories,” says Varady.
8. What does the underlined word “cumbersome” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Efficient. B. Unhealthy. C. Complicated. D. Flexible.
9. What does the new study aim to determine regarding intermittent fasting?
A. Whether it is useful to reduce obesity rate.
B Its impact on calorie tracking over a year.
C. Its effectiveness for long-term weight loss.
D. Whether it is better than traditional diets.
10. How did the researchers conduct their study?
A. By surveying the eating habits of adults with obesity.
B. By keeping track of the participants’ calorie intake.
C. By measuring the body weight of people in Chicago.
D. By analyzing data from the participants.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Intermittent fasting is as effective as counting calories.
B. Time-restricted eating is statistically insignificant.
C. Intermittent fasting is superior to traditional diets.
D. Counting calories is easier than counting time.
C 9. C 10. D 11. A
根据第一段“Intermittent fasting (间歇性禁食) has taken off in popularity in recent years as an alternative to more traditional weight loss advice, including counting calories, which can be cumbersome and hard to sustain for some people. (近年来,间歇性禁食作为一种替代传统减肥建议的方法越来越受欢迎,包括计算卡路里,这对一些人来说可能既_____又难以坚持。)”可知,句中hard为形容词,意为“困难的”,and为并列连词,可推测cumbersome也为形容词,且与hard词义相近,故cumbersome意为“复杂的”。故选C。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段“Some research suggests this can be successful for weight loss in the short term because people end up eating less, but it has been less clear how well it works over a longer stretch of time. A new study published Monday may have an answer. (一些研究表明,这在短期内可以成功减肥,因为人们最终吃得更少,但它在更长一段时间内效果如何还不太清楚。周一发表的一项新研究可能给出了答案。)”可知,这项新研究旨在确定间歇性禁食长期减肥的有效性。故选C。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“Varady’s team recruited 90 adults with obesity (肥胖) from the Chicago area and randomly assigned them to one of three groups: One group could eat only between noon and 8 pm, another had to count calories and cut daily energy intake by 25%, and the third group didn’t make any changes to their eating. (Varady的团队从芝加哥地区招募了90名肥胖成年人,并将他们随机分配到三个组中:一组只能在中午到晚上8点之间进食,另一组需要计算卡路里,并将每日能量摄入减少25%,第三组则不改变他们的饮食习惯。)”可知,研究人员是通过分析参与者的数据来进行研究的。故选D。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“The study found that those who did time-restricted eating lost, on average, about 10 pounds more than those in the control group, while those who counted their calories lost about 12 pounds more. The difference between the two groups wasn’t statistically significant. “The key take-away is that you can basically achieve the same amount of energy restriction by counting time instead of counting calories,” says Varady. (研究发现,限时进食的人平均比对照组多减重约10磅,而计算卡路里的人多减重约12磅。两组之间的差异在统计上不显著。Varady说:“关键的是,你可以通过计算时间来达到与计算卡路里相同的能量限制效果。”)”可知,从最后一段可以推断出间歇性禁食和计算卡路里一样有效。故选A。
D
Scientists have created a new material called COF-999 that can remove large amounts of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the air. The yellow powder (粉末) works faster than other materials and can be used over and over again. The new material could play an important part in the fight against climate change.
Currently, many scientists around the world are working on Direct Air Capture (DAC) to remove CO2 from the air and store it. But normally during the process, air is pulled across a material that can remove CO2 from it. One common material is limestone (石灰石), but the current methods of doing this are expensive and don’t capture (捕获) much CO2.
To test COF-999, the scientists filled a small tube with the yellow powder and then piped air from outside their lab through the tube for 20 days. Though there was CO2 in the air outside, the air that came out of the tube had no carbon dioxide at all. The discovery was exciting for the scientists.
COF-999 has more things that excite scientists. It captures CO2 about 10 times faster than other DAC materials. The researchers say that half a pound (about 230 grams) of the powder can pull as much CO2 from the air as a tree can. But unlike trees, COF-999 can capture CO2 even when it’s dark outside. Perhaps most importantly, COF-999 can be reused over and over again. The scientists have already tested reusing the material up to 300 times. They believe it could probably be reused thousands of times.
The researchers are still working on COF-999, and hope that soon it will be able to remove twice as much carbon as it does now. The next big challenge is figuring out how to use COF-999 in a direct air capture system. The machine will have to be designed so that the yellow powder won’t blow away when air is pulled through the machine. The scientists believe COF-999 will be ready to use in DAC systems in about two years.
12. Why does the author mention climate change in paragraph 1?
A. To increase people’s environmental awareness.
B. To show the significance of creating COF-999.
C. To ensure more funds to invest in environment.
D. To explore the role of COF-999 in environment.
13. Which best describes using limestone as a material to remove CO2?
A. Costly and inefficient. B. Simple and profitable.
C. Insecure and complex. D. Limited and impractical.
14. What is paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The process of testing COF-999.
B. The amount of COF-999 capturing CO2.
C. The challenges of using COF-999.
D. The advantages of COF-999 capturing CO2.
15. What is the author’s attitude to the prospect of COF-999?
A. Critical. B. Objective. C. Optimistic. D. Cautious.
B 13. A 14. D 15. C

Saying “No” Is the True Measure of Commitment to Your Goals
When we think about progressing towards goals and achieving them, the mind naturally goes to activity and action. We do A to achieve B. We made decision X to get outcome Y. ____16____
However, once we have set our goal and we’re working towards it, another measure of progress becomes increasingly more important: the ability to say “no”.
The modern world is full of distractions in the form of social media and content that’s tailor-made to attract our attention. ____17____ For example, if we are saving for a big purchase, many incidental temptations will litter our path towards it. Thus, saying “no” by controlling the mind’s focus and avoiding temptations is a remarkably strong predictor of success in life.
____18____ Without saying “no” we can become blind to the hidden cost of our choices. We can also end up missing out on the benefit of steady growth — how small efforts, when focused on consistently, add up to big results over time. Most of all, failing to say “no” can affect the way we see ourselves. ____19____ If we zigzag between tasks, we may begin to doubt our own ability to achieve our goal.
So when you consider how you are doing on your goals, consider not only what you say “yes” to, but also what you say “no” to. ____20____
A. Here are some tips on setting goals.
B. The latter will tell a lot about your commitment to success.
C. As you can see, the ability to say “no” is of great significance.
D. Our identity and self-image are profoundly influenced by what we do.
E. This focus involves the ability to stick to one task at the exclusion of all others.
F. They prevent us from pursuing a goal that matters to us rather than lack of action.
G. So great emphasis is placed on one’s ability to perform decisions about one’s goals.
G 17. F 18. C 19. D 20. B
上文“When we think about progressing towards goals and achieving them, the mind naturally goes to activity and action. We do A to achieve B. We made decision X to get outcome Y. (当我们思考如何朝着目标前进并实现它们时,脑海中自然会想到行动和活动。我们做A是为了实现B。我们做了决定X以得到结果Y)”说明,通过行动和决策以实现目标,空处承接上文,G选项中的“perform decisions about one’s goals”与上文中的“progressing towards goals and achieving them”相呼应。
上文“The modern world is full of distractions in the form of social media and content that’s tailor-made to attract our attention. (现代世界充满了以社交媒体和专门为吸引我们注意力而定制的内容形式的干扰因素)”及下文“For example, if we are saving for a big purchase, many incidental temptations will litter our path towards it. (例如,如果我们正在为一次大采购存钱,许多偶然的诱惑会充斥在我们实现目标的道路上)”说明了现代世界存在很多干扰因素,空处承上启下,F选项中的“They”与上文中的“distractions”、下文中的“many incidental temptations”相呼应。所以F选项“它们阻止我们追求对我们重要的目标,而不是缺乏行动”符合语境。故选F。
【18题详解】
下文“Without saying “no” we can become blind to the hidden cost of our choices. We can also end up missing out on the benefit of steady growth—how small efforts, when focused on consistently, add up to big results over time. (如果不说“不”,我们可能会对自己选择的隐藏成本视而不见。我们也可能最终错过稳步增长的好处——当始终如一地专注时,小小的努力如何随着时间的推移累积成巨大的成果)”说明,不说“不”带来的不良后果,从反面说明了说“不”的重要性,空处引出下文,C选项中的“say “no””与下文中的“saying “no””相一致。所以C选项“如你所见,说“不”的能力非常重要”,符合语境。故选C。
【19题详解】
上文“Most of all, failing to say “no” can affect the way we see ourselves. (最重要的是,不能说“不”会影响我们看待自己的方式)”及“If we zigzag between tasks, we may begin to doubt our own ability to achieve our goal. (如果我们在任务之间来回折腾,我们可能会开始怀疑自己实现目标的能力)”说明,不能说“不”对自我认知的影响,空处承上启下,D选项中的“Our identity and self-image”与上文中的“the way we see ourselves”相一致。所以D选项“我们的身份和自我形象深受我们所做事情的影响”符合语境。故选D。
【20题详解】
上文“So when you consider how you are doing on your goals, consider not only what you say “yes” to, but also what you say “no” to. (所以当你考虑自己在目标上的进展时,不仅要考虑你对什么说“是”,还要考虑你对什么说“不”)”说明要知道对什么说“不”,空处承接上文,B选项中的“The latter”与上文中的“what you say “no” to”相一致。所以B选项“后者将充分说明你对成功的承诺”符合语境。故选B。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was late in the evening with some mist enveloping the whole city. Esposito jumped into her truck, and began her 20-minute drive home. She just returned from visiting her mother. All of a sudden, out of nowhere a car unexpectedly hit Esposito’s truck so heavily that it nearly pushed her backward some 100 feet onto the railroad tracks, which meant incredible danger.
At the moment, a volunteer firefighter, Peter, 64, was getting ready for bed when he heard the sound of broken glass coming from outside his bedroom window. Peter never stopped to think. Instead, he ran out of the house as quickly as he could, still in his pajamas(睡衣), “Any firefighter would have done the same,” he told a reporter of a local newspaper.
The first car he came across was the one that had hit Esposito. Once Peter made sure that the driver was okay, he looked around and then found Esposito’s truck lying across the railroad tracks. And the constant noisy bells were signaling a coming train, which hardly had enough time or enough distance to keep itself stopped.
The moment he saw the red light of the tree, Peter knew how serious the situation was, so he rushed to the truck and banged on the driver’s side window. To his relief, unconscious though she was, Esposito seemed unhurt.
He tried hard to break down the door, but it was tightly jammed shut. What made Peter worried was that the train, travelling at sixty-five miles per hour, was coming very close to them. It was a race against time. Peter ran to the passenger side and threw open the door with all his strength. It was opened. He grabbed Esposito’s arms, pulled her toward him, and speedily walked her to safety behind a signal box a few feet away. Within six seconds, the train crashed the truck. What a narrow escape!
Quickly, Esposito was sent to the nearest hospital and a nurse was appointed to look after her.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150个左右;
The next morning, Esposito came to life.

Just then the nurse came in.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The next morning, Esposito came to life. Wiping her eyes and looking around, she was shocked to find herself lying in a hospital bed. She clapped her head, trying to recall what had happened yesterday evening. In her memory, on her way home from visiting her mother, a flying car knocked her truck heavily, making it change its initial track and she lost consciousness in a flash. But who on earth saved me? Who sent me here? A series of questions wandered around her mind.
Just then the nurse came in. With a cellphone in hand, the nurse approached Esposito. “Is this cellphone yours?” asked the nurse. Taking it from her hand, Esposito examined it carefully and then nodded. “Excuse me, can you tell me what happened last night?” Esposito looked at the nurse, waiting for her answer. The nurse recounted Peter’s heroic deeds in detail. “It was like a Hollywood movie, but this time was different. The hero arrived in pajamas not in a fire uniform.” the nurse said. Then they both laughed.

D The Chaná cultural heritage will survive and grow stronger.
7. Which of the following best describes Blas Jaime?
A. Strong-willed and sympathetic. B. Responsible and devoted.
C. Determined and talented. D. Warm-hearted and ambitious.

Intermittent fasting (间歇性禁食) has taken off in popularity in recent years as an alternative to more traditional weight loss advice, including counting calories, which can be cumbersome and hard to sustain for some people.

D The advantages of COF-999 capturing CO2.
15. What is the author’s attitude to the prospect of COF-999?
A. Critical. B. Objective. C. Optimistic. D. Cautious.
