Charles Darwin’s ideas about evolution completely changed the way scientists understand the natural world. Mr. Darwin began to develop his ideas after visiting the Galapagos Islands. He recorded his ideas in a series of notebooks labeled with letters of the alphabet. The Cambridge University Library had several of Mr. Darwin’s notebooks. The two that were missing were kept in a small box, and were last seen in 2000, when they were taken out to be photographed. In 2001, some noticed that the box was missing. The library made a huge effort to find the books. Jessica Gardner was the librarian behind the push to get the notebooks back. But even she could never have expected the way in which the notebooks were returned: in a pink gift bag with a note that said “Librarian, Happy Easter, X”. Jessica Gardner told The New York Times, “ I still feel shaky. It;s really hard to express how happy I am.” After the police had examined the package, library workers were able to carefully study the notebooks. They were pleased to learn that the notebooks were in good shape. They weren’t damaged and they didn’t miss any pages. A The Harvard Summer School study abroad programs seek motivated and independent students who are eager for a unique academic challenge. The other students ran to the wall and searched for their names on the list. Then, some screamed in excitement while some slicked away angrily. Following the success of my audition, I was placed in the orchestra and I was in the middle of the violin section. However, I was too short to see the conductor as I was blocked by Gordon, an eleven-year-old boy in front of me. The conductor told him to switch seats with me. In the orchestra, if you were seated in the front near the conductor, you had to be excellent. I understood the gravity of the seating arrangement. On hearing the conductor’s words, Gordon looked stricken. “Everyone will think she did better than me in the audition!” he burst. During the break, Gordon told me that we would both perform in front of the group. Whoever played it better would win. Returning to class, Gordon brought up his idea to the conductor at once. The conductor agreed and the challenge was scheduled for the following day. After class, I told my father about the challenge. I waited for him to tell me that he would not let any boy pick on me. Instead, he grabbed a music stand and told me to start practising. For fifteen minutes, my father kept barking orders. “Faster!” “Posture!” “Watch your rhythm!” Then, he said, “OK. Just play like that. May the best man win.” I gave my father a wink, feeling optimistic about the challenge. Maybe I should have expected as much. When we played chess, my father always won. He said if he had eased up and let me win, that would be cheating. It was the first lesson I remembered from my father: Work hard and do not be afraid of losing. If you do lose, pick yourself up and you’ll succeed some day. 24. Why did some students slick away angrily? A. They were too short to be qualified. B. They did not pass the selection test. C. They were laughed at for their failure. D. They hated the other students’ scream. 25. What does the underlined word “audition” mean in Paragraph 2? A. A trial performance. B. A close match. C. A serious dialogue. D. A careful choice. 26. What can we infer about the seats in the orchestra? A. They are decided by the age of performers. B. They actually depend on the height of performers. C. They can be flexibly switched in different performances. D. They are arranged according to the importance of performers. 27. What lesson did the author learn from his father? A. It’s never too old to learn. B. Great minds think the same. C. Failure is the mother of success. D. Every cloud has a silver lining. 24. B 25. A 26. D 27. Several big companies started amazing new programs in a short time, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Microsoft’s Bing and Google’s Bard. “A few years ago I never would have imagined we would advance this far this soon,” says Zhe Jiang, a University of Florida researcher who studies applications of AI. Here are some examples of AI applications. In April, a study published in Nature showed that an AI program was as good as or better than human experts at spotting heart problems in patient ultrasound (超声波) images. That is to say, AI is able to match or go beyond human doctors at catching cancers and other disorders by scanning images and tissue samples. Some drug companies are already relying heavily on AI to help find promising new drugs. For example, PsychoGenics, a company specializing in drugs for mental disorders, is improving on the inefficient, inexact and costly process of testing new mental drugs on mice, which typically takes five years. By using AI instead of lab staff to observe the effects of new drugs on mice, the company can test more drugs with greater accuracy at a tenth the cost and two years faster. With 56 million Americans over 65, the high cost and short supply of eldercare workers, eldercare robots have already stepped in. Without using the recent Al advances, robots already watch over seniors with electronic eyes, fetch small items, answer questions. Some of them can already start conversations with seniors, help them recall what happened, and then report the results to family members. Soon, the power of such devices to interact with people will improve greatly. “Caregiving and companion robots equipped with the latest AI can provide ‘empathy’,” says Forrester’s Curran. “They can tell the difference between a senior who is searching through a drawer, and one who is struggling to open a drawer,” he explains. 28. What made scientists surprised according to paragraph 1? A. AI is applied to real-life tasks. B. AI has been developing so swiftly. C AI can solve some real-life problems. D. AI has helped launch some famous programs. 29. What can we learn about AI from the study in paragraph 2? A. AI can settle disorders by scanning images. B. AI will replace human doctors sooner or later. C. AI is better than human beings in some aspects. D. AI can solve problems in patient ultrasound images. 30. Why does the author take PsychoGenics as an example? A. To explain the difficulty in finding new drugs. B. To show the significance of finding new drugs. C. To draw a comparison between AI and lab staff. D. To convey the importance of AI to drug companies. 31 What does the author most possibly talk about next? A. Some negative effects caused by AI. B. Different opinions about AI application. C. Other aspects of AI application in real-life. D. Some examples of AI helping spot cancer. 28. B 29. C 30. D 31. They did it using videos shot by some extraordinary helpers. The work should help protect the sea grass, and also shows off a powerful way to explore the ocean. As a shelter for many sea creatures, sea grasses are flowering plants that normally grow in shallow waters near coasts. They grow in thick fields, known as seagrass meadows (海草床), which help clean the ocean water. More importantly, they are called “ocean lung”. They help in the fight against the climate crisis. That’s because they store huge amounts of carbon—the major source of global warming. Damaging these seagrass meadows can release this pollutant again, making things worse. Considering the urgent need to protect seagrass meadows, scientists are eager to know about their size and number. However, the meadows can be hard to spot from above, either because the water is too deep or not clear enough. And the ocean is so huge that it’s hard to study them by diving. So scientists decided to have tiger sharks help the research. Tiger sharks are inborn fast swimmers, and spend a lot of time in seagrass meadows. Between 2016 and 2020, the researchers attached cameras and other trackers to the fins of seven tiger sharks, and then let them go again. The cameras were designed to fall off after hours and float to the surface. Tracking signals helped find the floating cameras and collect the videos the sharks had taken while traveling for miles. Moreover, other tools were used, including satellite images, as well as images taken by divers and boats. Putting all this information together, the scientists learned that the waters around the Bahamas are home to the largest seagrass meadow ever discovered. And the meadows cover at least 25,500 square miles, and could be as large as 35,500 square miles. Different from previous studies, the program discovers how useful large underwater animals can be in helping to learn more about life under the sea. Oliver Shipley, a scientist from the team, says animals like tiger sharks are going to take us to new places that we didn’t know existed. 32. Why do seagrass meadows urgently need protection? A. Damaging them will worsen climate crisis. B. They determine the cleanliness of ocean water. C. Sea creatures can’t survive without their shelter. D. Their existence balances the underwater ecosystem. 33. How did tiger sharks help the scientific research? A. By tracking signals scientists sent. B. By bringing back cameras with videos. C. By carrying the recording equipment around. D. By spending a lot of time in seagrass meadows. 34. What is the highlight about the research according to the text? A. Leading scientists. B. Advanced theories. C. Multiple experimental tools. D. Unusual research assistants. 35. Which is the most suitable title for the text? A. Man and Nature Work Together B. A Novel Way to Explore the Sea C. Sea Grass: An Undervalued Plant D. Ocean Lung Measured by Natural Explorers 【答案】32. A 33. C 34. D 35. 根据第二段中“They help in the fight against the climate crisis. That’s because they store huge amounts of carbon—the major source of global warming. Damaging these seagrass meadows can release this pollutant again, making things worse.”(它们有助于对抗气候危机。 故选A项。 根据第四段中“Between 2016 and 2020, the researchers attached cameras and other trackers to the fins of seven tiger sharks, and then let them go again. The cameras were designed to fall off after hours and float to the surface. Tracking signals helped find the floating cameras and collect the videos the sharks had taken while traveling for miles. Moreover, other tools were used, including satellite images, as well as images taken by divers and boats.”(在2016年至2020年期间,研究人员在七只虎鲨的鳍上安装了摄像头和其他追踪器,然后又放了它们。 根据最后一段“Different from previous studies, the program discovers how useful large underwater animals can be in helping to learn more about life under the sea. Oliver Shipley, a scientist from the team, says animals like tiger sharks are going to take us to new places that we didn’t know existed.”(与之前的研究不同,该项目发现了大型水下动物在帮助了解更多海底生命方面的有用性。 根据文章大意以及第一段“Scientists have recently discovered the world’s largest known field of sea grass. They did it using videos shot by some extraordinary helpers. The work should help protect the sea grass, and also shows off a powerful way to explore the ocean.”(科学家最近发现了世界上已知的最大的海草田。 和第二段中“As a shelter for many sea creatures, sea grasses are flowering plants that normally grow in shallow waters near coasts. They grow in thick fields, known as seagrass meadows (海草床), which help clean the ocean water. More importantly, they are called “ocean lung”.”(作为许多海洋生物的避难所,海草是一种开花植物,通常生长在靠近海岸的浅水区。 You had the best intentions to study well before your exam, but you ended up getting distracted by other commitments, and now you have to study at the last minute. ____36____ Here are some strategies that can make last minute exam preparation more effective. When she was a baby, she would clap and sing along to the tunes on TV shows with delightful enthusiasm. When she saw some musical notes written in a magazine, she could sing them all. Her parents were amazed that she could read music at such a young age. So her father decided to gift her a piano to nurture her talent. Overjoyed, Eunice excelled in her piano playing. Eunice’s mum, a conservative lady, has strict rules and unique insights into music. Classical music, to her, is a blend of wisdom and history. She believed it had the power to nourish the soul and deepen one’s understanding of the world. In contrast, she thought pop music lacked the lasting depth and beauty of classical music. Her mother discouraged her from playing that kind of music. “Jazz and blues are wicked and lead to things like dancing!” Her mum would say with a serious look on her face. As Eunice grew older, she enjoyed diverse music from radios, record players, and street musicians. It all sounded amazing, and how could such wonderful music possibly be wicked? Her father, understanding her love for music, encouraged her to play all kinds of music when her mother was not home. He kept watching out of the front window to see if her mother was coming back. “Here she comes! Stop playing!” he would whisper urgently whenever he spotted her mother approaching. Playing this diverse music became their cherished secret. After years of studying, her family found it difficult to support her musical education. Fortunately, her piano teacher Miss Mazzy came to her aid and collected donations from the people of the town. The generous neighbours readily supported her, providing her with the funds she needed. To express her gratitude, Miss Mazzy arranged for Eunice to perform a special concert. The girl was both excited and nervous. She worked especially hard to polish up twelve pieces, including several pop music pieces. However, she was afraid that her mother would come and find out her secret love for pop music during the concert. As she stepped on the stage, she was surprised to see her mother in the front row. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ After playing all the twelve pieces, Eunice’s mother approached her with pride. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】Paragraph 1: As she stepped on the stage, she was surprised to see her mother in the front row. Her heart raced and she felt scared. She took a deep breath, filling her lungs with air, and let it out slowly to calm her nerves. She glanced down at her hands, resting on the piano keys, and remembered all the long hours she had spent practicing. She lifted her gaze to meet her mother’s, who was watching her with a curious and proud expression. With a determined nod, Eunice placed her fingers on the keys and began her first piece, allowing the southing melody to wash away her worries and carry her into the world of music. Paragraph 2: After playing all the twelve pieces, Eunice’s mother approached her with pride. “I didn’t know you could play like this. I’m so proud of you,” she said, her voice filled with surprise and admiration. Tears welled up in Eunice’s eyes as she hugged her mother tightly. Eunice not only impressed her audience but also gained a deeper understanding and acceptance from her mother. From then on, she continued to explore various genres of music, always finding new ways to blend them into her own unique style. 词汇激活 行为类 ①深呼吸:took a deep breath/filled her lungs with air/let it out slowly ②抬起目光:lift her gaze/raise her gaze ③拥抱:hugged her mother tightly/gave her mother a tight hug 情绪类 ①心跳加速:Her heart raced/Her heart was beating faster ②骄傲:be proud of/take pride in 【点睛】[高分句型1] She took a deep breath, filling her lungs with air, and let it out slowly to calm her nerves.(运用了现在分词短语作伴随状语) [高分句型2] She lifted her gaze to meet her mother’s, who was watching her with a curious and proud expression.(运用了who引导的非限制性定语从句) 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$绵阳南山中学实验学校高20二三级高2下3月月考英语试题听力部分。 Do you want fried chicken and beer on this beautiful snowy day? Do you think I need to see a doctor and take sleeping pills? In my view, there's no need to do so for the time being. You can do yoga before that time, or go for a walk after supper and remember not to drink strong tea or coffee before going to bed. I'll have a try. Thanks a million. Not at all. B That summer, I had my first selection test and later, the name list of the qualified candidates was posted on a noticeboard in the hallway. C They can be flexibly switched in different performances. D. They are arranged according to the importance of performers. 27. What lesson did the author learn from his father? A. It’s never too old to learn. B. Great minds think the same. C. Failure is the mother of success. D. Every cloud has a silver lining. C AI Can Bring Great Benefits to Human Beings The explosion of progress in AI in recent months has surprised even the scientists and engineers who specialize in applying AI to real-life tasks. C. AI can solve some real-life problems. 31. What does the author most possibly talk about next? A. Some negative effects caused by AI. B. Different opinions about AI application. C. Other aspects of AI application in real-life. D. Some examples of AI helping spot cancer. D Scientists have recently discovered the world’s largest known field of sea grass. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
