M:Well, I realized that although all school paper was recycled and most of my friends use both sides of paper, we use huge quantities, and I thought we should cut down. And then it came to me that we should be sending in most of our work electronically. I'm going to recommend it to our teachers.

Scientists say a huge percentage of bird species are in danger because their habitats, or homelands, are disappearing.
Traditional migration paths take birds through countries that are not protecting the places for birds to stop, rest and feed. The scientists studied the migration or flight paths of almost 1,500 species. They decided that 91 percent of them passed through dangerous areas.
The major danger for migratory birds is development. Buildings and pavements have covered the places where birds stop and feed as they move from one part of the world to another. One of the scientists who worked on the study says, “Many of these important places have been lost to land reclamation (开垦) because of urban, industrial and agricultural land expansion.”
第二部分
38
The problem, according to scientists, is that many of these small birds die along their migration paths because they don't have a safe place to feed and rest. There is no place to restore their energy for the next part of their journey. Countries in North Africa, Central Asia and those along the coasts of East Asia are having the most difficult time in protecting land. The scientists say these countries do not have enough areas that are safe for birds. One species that doesn't exist now is the Eskimo curlew. “Our world gets poorer every time we lose a species,” one of the scientists says.
第二部分
39
The researchers say countries need to work together and come up with safe stopping areas for birds that pass through their boundaries. For example, one country might have preserved safe zones for migrating birds. But a neighbor country might not. A bird might die.
One scientist who is not connected with the report tells Los Angeles Times that while some habitats are changing, more work can be done to make urban areas safe for birds.
第二部分
40
He says small changes, like planting more native plants or keeping cats out of the areas birds would be likely to use, could make a big difference.

Malvern is a place close to my heart. Garden designer and television presenter Arit Anderson is one of the familiar faces who will be presenting talks over the four days of the show. Anderson didn't move into garden design until her mid-40s. Raised in a large family by a busy single mum in Hertfordshire, she began her working life as a pharmacy technician (药剂师). All these different strands equipped her well for a career change to horticulture.

Climate change has been blamed for killer hurricanes, sea level rise, and drought, but a new report suggests the effects of climate change might hit the world's coffee supply. Up to 70 percent of the world's coffee supply could be threatened over the next 66 years, according to a new study by researchers at England's Royal Botanic Garden.
第二部分
54
Nearly 100 percent of the world's arabica coffee growing regions could become unsuitable for the plant by 2080, according to the study. Beans from arabica coffee plants account for about 70 percent of the world's coffee, but the plant has to be grown under strict weather conditions: they thrive at temperatures between 64 and 70 degrees Celsius, and are highly influenced by frost or temperatures higher than 73 degrees Celsius.
第二部分
55
With temperatures estimated to increase by between 1.8 and 4 degrees Celsius by the end of the century, the fragile plant might become increasingly expensive and difficult to grow, especially in places such as Ethiopia and Kenya. In that worst case, nearly all of the world's native arabica coffee would die out. Under more conservative estimates, about 65 percent of the regions that used to grow the coffee would become unsuitable for it. The evidence from coffee farmers, from numerous coffee growing regions around the world, is that they are already suffering the influences of increased warming.
第二部分
56
Some commercial farmers would likely be able to move their operations to other areas or would be able to overcome climate change with artificial cooling techniques, but wild arabica is generally considered to be much more suitable for making high-quality coffee.
If arabica becomes impossible to raise in its native areas, it could wreak havoc (造成破坏) on the economies of the mainly third-world countries in which it grows. Coffee is the world's most popular drink and is the second most-traded commodity in the world, behind oil.
篇章导读:本文是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍了气候变化对世界咖啡产量的影响,尤其是对阿拉比卡咖啡种植的影响。

With the levels of carbon dioxide in the air increasing rapidly, the global temperature continues going up. It would be a catastrophe. The temperature rises, resulting in a higher sea level, more severe storms, floods, droughts, even the extinction of species.
The UN Conference in Copenhagen focused on future actions on climate changes, which has attracted more and more people's attention. It is realized that living a low-carbon life is necessary. Turn off the lights, the TV, the computers and so on if we are not using them. Recycle cans, bottles, plastic bags and newspapers if circumstances allow us to. Walk or ride a bike if we can.
Together, individuals can make a difference. If all of us think about the problems and live a low-carbon life, we shall have a better and cleaner planet in the future.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
“Judy, hurry up! Let's go to the beach!” That was a familiar morning call from my older brother, Sirin. Hearing that, I would spring up quickly and we would set off on our journey. Raised by our grandparents in Savanna, we experienced our happiest moments there. Nestled between the mountains and the sea, with its lush green trees, crystal-like ocean, and clear blue sky, Savanna was like a small village from a fairy tale.
第四部分
95
Sirin and I often enjoyed the gentle sea breeze as we explored the breathtaking coast, with the endless, open water beside us and the vast, clear sky overhead. We felt a sense of freedom to wander the sandy beach or experience the excitement of sailing out to sea, delighting in the awe-inspiring beauty of nature's wonders. When we grew tired, leisurely walking on the soft, warm sands to collect unique, fascinating seashells brought us a different kind of peaceful joy. The friendly, warmhearted villagers treated us like family, often sharing their freshly-caught seafood with us.
第四部分
96
Three years later, we were taken away from the village to receive a better education by our parents. Occupied with our study, we rarely visited our beloved grandparents, only calling them occasionally. We gradually adapted to the fast-paced city life and found it more efficient and convenient. Whenever we had an appetite for seafood, our dad would simply order it through his phone, and it would be delivered to our doorstep within minutes. In addition to seafood, we could order anything our hearts desired, no matter how late it was. What we loved most was the convenience of not needing to wash the dishes after eating, as they were all disposable, designed for single use.
第四部分
97
However, deep within us, we sometimes longed for the simple pleasures of village life. We were told by our grandparents that more and more tourists flooded into the village, which strengthened our desire to return. So, when the eagerly-awaited summer vacation arrived, we finally made our dream trip back to our childhood paradise. After greeting our grandparents with hugs and smiles, we eagerly headed towards the sun-kissed seaside to relive our cherished memories.

However, what we saw shocked us. Plastic bags and single-use containers littered the beaches, and we could hardly see any undersea creature in the once crystal-clear sea. To make matters worse, the water was dark and difficult to see through. Because of the unpleasant smell, we had to cover our noses. With tears blurring our vision, we desperately wondered what had happened to our beloved village. Looking at our anxious faces, Grandfather sighed with his head bowed. It was those visitors who did help us earn more money, but they also brought massive amounts of rubbish, which caused severe pollution and changed our beautiful village completely. While telling us about the changes, Grandfather gazed at the sea, his eyes filled with disappointment and helplessness.
第四部分
Hearing Grandfather's words, we couldn't wait to do something to tackle the pollution. Without hesitation, Sirin and I took off our shoes and walked near the sea to collect the rubbish with our bare hands. Seeing what we were doing, our family and some villagers joined us in our efforts. Some villagers fetched helpful tools, like sticks and nets, which were quite useful in catching the waste. I also pulled out my mobile phone and took photos of the rubbish floating on the surface of the sea. By posting those images on social media, I hoped more people could be aware of the pollution and lend a helping hand too. Much to our relief, our joint efforts made a difference. The seaside became clean once more, and the breeze from the sea smelled fresh and sweet again.
