Almost everybody likes to travel. And almost everybody has an excuse why they can't. Maybe we have too much work to do, or not enough money. Maybe we're too young to travel, or too old.
And then there are active people like Eleanor Hamby and her friend Sandra Hazelip. At the age of 81,they went on a journey that not only changed their lives but made them stars: An 80-day trip around the world. They got the inspiration from Jules Verne's classic novel Around the World in 80 Days.
Earlier in 2023, they began their journey on the icy shores of Antarctica(南极洲). Then they went on trips to Southeast Asia and the Middle East. They decided to set up a TikTok account(账号) for their 80-Days trip. They named it "Around the World in 80Days: At 81 and Still on the Run". They kept records of each journey on TikTok. From taking photos with penguins in Antarctica to balloon rides in Egypt, the pair made the most of every vacation day.
In fact, they ended up doing better than the character of Jules Verne's novel, Phileas Fogg. Hamby and Hazelip visited 18 countries in 80 days. But Phileas Fogg only traveled to 11. And Fogg was about half the age of Hamby and Hazelip.
Now, they're planning a trip to South America in 2024. If you're feeling encouraged by their adventures, you might be wondering how you can follow in their footsteps. Follow their TikTok account and you will get the answer you want.

①Weeks ago, a teacher in UK sent this e-mail to her Chinese students, and it soon became popular online.
From: aliceamber@cambridge.com
Dear students
Thank you for your email. I have left the school to follow my dream of knitting (编织) sweaters for penguins in Antarctica (南极洲) . I will be out of office until my penguin friends are getting better...
②You may find this e-mail surprising, but knitting sweaters for penguins is a real act of kindness. This activity began because of a serious oil spill (石油泄漏) in the 1990s. During that time, the number and health of baby penguins had a serious drop. When little penguins were covered in oil, their lives were in danger.
③To solve this problem, the activity of knitting sweaters started. The founders (创办者们) came up with an idea to help save the penguins. They asked people from all over the world to knit sweaters for penguins. These sweaters could keep the penguins warm during the cleaning process and stop them from eating the oil. Luckily the idea worked. In 2001, another oil spill happened. This time, the sweaters helped save 96% of the penguins.
④However, some people have questioned if these sweaters might put on more stress (压力) on the penguins. In fact, there is no need to be worried, the sweaters are only used for a short time. Once the penguins are better, they no longer wear them.
23. Why did the teacher leave the school?
A. To help penguins. B. To practice knitting.
C. To have a good rest. D. To travel in Antarctica.
24. The sweaters can help the penguins by________.
A. helping them to swim B. teaching them to knit
C. keeping them warm D. feeding them the oil
25. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. The penguins are under stress.
B. Penguins wear sweaters only for a short time.
C. There isn’t enough sweaters for the penguins.
D. People worried if sweaters could harm other animals.
26. What’s the best title (标题) for the text?
A. A teacher’s journey to Antarctica.
B. Knitting sweaters to help penguins.
C. The problem of oil spill in Antarctica.
D. New technology is used to help penguins.

Imagine you are in an autonomous vehicle (AV,自动驾驶车辆) and face this terrible choice: The car must either turn left and hit an 8-year-old girl, or turn right and hit many walkers. On top of this “moral dilemma (道德困境)”, if the car doesn’t turn, you could be in danger. What decision would you want the car to make?
When AVs face dangerous situations, should they save people in the car first or walkers? Should they put the greater good above one person’s safety? These questions have been under discussion for years, but there is no perfect answer.
“A moral dilemma is a dilemma; it has no clear answer,” wrote Derek Leben, a professor at the Tepper School of Business, US, in his paper.
Iyad Radhwan, an MIT scientist studied these questions. He found out that people often think about their own safety first. “People buying these cars, they want cars that protect the passengers. But they want other people’s cars to protect walkers instead.”
AVs bring not only moral dilemmas but also problems with rules. If there is an accident, who should be responsible?
In July, 2024, a self-driving taxi by Baidu hit a walker in Wuhan, Hubei, who ran a red light. Baidu worked with the police and took the walker to the hospital. In another accident in Seattle, US, in April, 2024, it was decided that the “driver” should be responsible because he was on his phone while in the full self-driving mode (模式).
The situations of different accidents caused by AVs are so complex (复杂的) that “now there are no very clear laws about it”, said Ji Xuehong, a researcher from North China University of technology.
27. How does the writer introduce the topic of moral dilemmas faced by AVs?
A. By giving an example of a hard decision.
B. By explaining what moral dilemmas mean.
C. By describing how self-driving cars work.
D. By introducing the rules for self-driving cars.
28. What does Derek Leben think about the moral dilemma?
A. It won’t happen in real life.
B. It is easy to make a choice.
C. There is no perfect answer.
D. Drivers should protect themselves.
29. What is Paragraph 6 mainly about?
A. Real-life examples of AV accidents in China.
B. The best ways to deal with the moral dilemma.
C. Rules of driving AVs in big cities like Seattle.
D. Different situations of accidents caused by AVs.
30. What might be Ji Xuehong’s opinion in the last paragraph?
A. AVs are hard to drive. B. We need better laws for AVs.
C. AVs can cause a lot of trouble. D. There will be no need for drivers soon.

【答案】27. A 28. C 29. D 30. B

My favorite Chinese traditional story
There are many traditional stories in China. Among all of the stories, I like YuGong moves the mountains best.
Once upon a time, there was an old man called YuGong. There were two high mountains near his home. They were so high that it took him a long time to walk to the other side. So he decided to move the mountains. YuGong and his family began to move the mountains. They kept moving them day after day, year after year. Finally, a god was so moved that he took the mountains away.
The story reminds us that nothing is impossible as long as we work hard. We should not give up.
