January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code, and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only S5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips for two months. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. For example, in a global math test, it got 79.8% right, slightly higher than OpenAI’s model. A simple version of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U.S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U. S. tech companies are worried. Meta plans to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts say China is catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, proving that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” ______ With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
56.What is the main purpose of the article?
A.To explain how computer chips work. B.To introduce a low-cost AI model from China.
C.To encourage students to become programmers. D.To compare Chinese and American AI technologies.

A.OpenAI B.GPT-4o C.DeepSeek-R1 D.the team
58.What does the writer think is the most important for DeepSeek-R1’s success?
A.Having enough money. B.Creativity and hard work.
C.Using the latest computer chips. D.Copying other countries’ ideas.

For those who prefer to sit on their sofas and enjoy entertainment (娱乐) programs on Chinese New Year’s Eve, the Spring Festival Gala is something not to be missed. However, the 2025 Spring Festival Gala, as the first gala following the successful inclusion (入选) of the Chinese Spring Festival in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) list, was much more than an entertainment event.

In total, 13 ICH different skills were used. “Each part of the dress tells a story from the past, and they make me deeply understand how rich Chinese culture is.” said a viewer.
2
Another highlight of the Gala was the Cyber Yangko Dance in which humanoid robots (robots shaped like humans) dressed in colorful costumes performed yangko dance, spun handkerchiefs (转手绢) and formed creative group patterns. The show amazed audiences and showed the modern technology-traditional art connection. One audience Mr. Zhang expressed, “I had much fun watching it and was amazed at how technology brought new life to traditions.”
3
The 2025 Spring Festival Gala featured a Tibet branch-venue (西藏分会场) showing cultural exchange through performances like “Flying Strings and Welcoming Spring”. Dancers from different ethnic groups (民族) wore traditional Tibetan costumes to perform the Mangkang String Dance. The cultural exchange was further intensified by the foreign band OneRepublic’s performance of “Counting Stars”. The song connected the energetic rhythm with Chinese-style stage design and traditional instruments, offering both Chinese and global audiences a wonderful cultural experience.

Four years ago, my life was a fixed cycle: work, socialize (社交) indoors, sleep and repeat. The closest I got to nature was looking at the garden from my room window. But all that changed when I came across hiking by accident.

Tom was upset because he only got 71 in the math test. Worried about disappointing his mother, he changed the score to 91. When his mom saw the paper, she was surprised and gave him a warm hug, praising his “improvement.” At first, Tom felt excited, but soon guilt crept in. That night, he lay awake, uneasy about his lie. The next morning, he gathered courage and confessed to his mom, tears in his eyes. Instead of scolding him, she hugged him again and said, “I’m proud of your honesty.” She explained that mistakes are part of learning and offered to help him study. Deeply thankful, Tom decided to work hard. With his mom’s support, he practiced math daily and made real progress. This experience taught Tom that truth and effort bring true happiness.

1
The gala began with an eye-catching opening act featuring (以……为特点) Li Ziqi, the Internet influencer and Sichuan ICH Ambassador. Her dress in this act included many Chinese ICH art forms, such as plant dyeıng (colorıng cloth with leaves), bamboo weaving and Miao embroidery.
As an important part of the Spring Festival, the Gala celebrates not only China’s rich traditions but also modern achievements. And China, as a nation with rich cultural heritage and a creative spirit, will continue to shine on the international stage.

Four years ago, my life was a fixed cycle: work, socialize (社交) indoors, sleep and repeat. The closest I got to nature was looking at the garden from my room window. But all that changed when I came across hiking by accident.
It started with an invitation from a friend—to join a hiking group for a day out. Uncertain, but interested, I agreed. The first hike was hard. I was out of breath and my legs ached. But as I reached the end, I was amazed by the beautiful view of nature. A feeling of achievement filled my heart.
I decided to hike more. In doing so, I noticed some changes. My body grew stronger. My stamina (耐力) improved. And my mind grew more relaxed. The stress of city life disappeared with each step.
Along the way, I met new people. We enjoyed the nature, shared stories and formed friendships. What’s more, we did all this without using our smart phones.
As my connection with nature got deeper, so did my love for the environment. I joined in environmental protection efforts, understanding that protecting beautiful nature was my responsibility (责任).
