Slowly and painfully,he made his greatest possible effort to look
out of the window beside the bed. When eagerly looking out of the
window,he was frozen with his mouth open wide at the sight of the
wall. Yes,he could see nothing but a blank wall. He couldnt
believe his eyes. Gradually,he calmed down and lost himself in
thought. Sitting there alone,he wondered why the former roommate
spent time describing the lively scenes during the onehour periods.
After a while, the nurse came in to take his temperature.“Miss,my
former roommate pictured wonderful things outside the window to me
every day, when he sat up and looked out of the window. But in fact
there is only a wall outside. I just cant understand why he did so,”
the man asked.
“The man was blind and could not even see the wall. Perhaps he
just wanted to encourage you,”the nurse answered. He was again
shocked feeling deeply moved. Yes,he realised he had actually
lived for those periods! He remembered how much he enjoyed the
happy moments his roommate brought him. He felt grateful for his
roommates special encouragement. There is great happiness in
making others happy, despite our own situations. Shared grief is half
the sorrow, but happiness when shared,is doubled.

练案[20] Unit 5 What an adventure!
Section Ⅳ Writing——Writing about a diving experience
Ⅰ.阅读理解
As summer approaches, many kids and teenagers
may find that they have more time in hand. One great
way to make use of the extra time is to go on an
adventure and travel. Clearly,I am not a naturally
adventurous person, but I have found that taking risks
and challenging myself to explore and travel to
unfamiliar places can be a very rewarding experience.
Because I am usually quite busy during the
school year, most of my travels take place during the
summer. Over the past few summers,I have hiked in
the Grand Canyon, explored Niagara Falls, and
camped out in upstate New York. Although these
experiences are varied, they are similar in that they
instill(逐步灌输)a sense of appreciation for nature
and a more balanced view on life. When I hiked in the
Grand Canyon,for example,I was in awe(敬畏)of
the geological process that shaped the canyon.
Adventures,of course, are not limited to hiking.
There are many other choices, such as camping,
volunteering in a foreign environment and traveling to
different countries. In my opinion, adventures are
more enjoyable with family or a few friends. There is a
sense of bonding that one only gets through spending
time together in outdoor adventures. For example,
when I was in Boy Scouts,I often went on weekend
camping trips with my friends. When I came back from
a Boy Scouts camping trip,I often was eager to go outside
more and explore the parks and nature around me.
Next fall,I will attend college. In the meantime,
though,I hope to make the most of my summer to
explore and travel. Now,I am planning on hiking and
camping out in Maine. When I visited Maine last fall,
I was amazed by how beautiful it was,and I really
hope to enjoy the beauty of nature.

Ⅳ.读后续写
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语
续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Two men, both seriously ill, shared the same
hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his
bed for an hour each afternoon. His bed was next to
the only window of the room. The other man had to
spend all his time flat on his back. The men talked for
hours on bed. They spoke of their wives and families,
their homes, their jobs, their experiences in the
army, and the places where they had been on
vacation. Every afternoon when the man in the bed by
the window could sit up,he would pass the time by
describing to his roommate all the things he could see
outside the window. The man in the other bed began
to live for those onehour periods when his world
would be broadened and enlivened(使……更有生
机)by all the activities and colours of the world
outside.
The window overlooked a park with a lovely
lake. Ducks and swans played on the water while
children sailed their models boats. Young lovers
walked arm in arm among flowers of every colour.
Grand old trees made everything around more
attractive, and a fine view of the city skyline could be
seen in the distance. As the man by the window
described all this in great detail, the man on the other
side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the
picturesque (风景如画的) scene. One warm
afternoon, the man by the window described a parade
passing by. Although the other man couldnt hear the
band,he could see it in his minds eye as the
gentleman by the window pictured it with descriptive
words.
Day and weeks passed. One morning, the day
nurse arrived to bring water for their bath only to find
the lifeless body of the man by the window, who had
died peacefully in his sleep. She was saddened and
called the hospital attendants to take the body away.
As soon as it seemed appropriate, the other man
asked if he could be moved next to the window. The
nurse was happy to make the switch, and after making
sure he was comfortable, she left him alone. Finally,
he would have the joy of seeing it for himself.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

possible effort to look out of the window beside the
