With so many incredible opportunities across the globe, there’s never been a better time to become an English teacher overseas.
Who can teach English abroad?
Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) offers prospective university students, university graduates and young people, in general, a perfect opportunity. TEFL-certified teachers see new corners of the world and gain priceless, international work experience.
Qualifications and certificates to teach English abroad
Generally, you don’t need to have a bachelor’s degree or, indeed, any university degree to get started. All you need is the finances to start a course and the ability to speak English. What you will need is TEFL certification. Employers want to know you have the skills to successfully navigate (驾驭) a course.
The start-up costs of teaching English abroad
For a start, you need to invest in a suitable TEFL course. If you’re heading to a country that requires a visa, there will be fees involved. It’s also worth remembering that you’ll also need money to cover costs after you arrive until your first month’s pay arrives in your account. This could include rent, groceries, leisure activities and more.

A man known for his generous acts of mowing lawns (修剪草坪) for free has sparked an extraordinary wave of kindness, raising over $700,000 for an elderly woman named Beth.
Spencer, from CS Mowing, was contacted by a friend at the city about Beth, who was struggling with an overgrown lawn. The city had issued a warning, threatening to charge her $240 for maintenance — a fee she couldn’t afford.
Spencer visited Beth’s home, where she shared her struggles in finding help. Moved by her situation, he transformed her lawn for free. Beth was overwhelmed (溢于言表) with gratitude, brought to tears by the kind gesture. Spencer shared the heartwarming transformation in a video titled “Her Tears Said It All: ‘My Prayers Have Been Answered’”, and the response was overwhelming.
Viewers were eager to help Beth beyond her lawn, suggesting donations to address accessibility issues at her home, such as installing a ramp, repairing her driveway, and adding a chair lift. Spencer set up a GoFundMe page with a goal of $100,000, but the donations quickly surpassed expectations. Over 28,000 people contributed, with one donor giving $2,500. Messages poured in from donors who were inspired by Spencer’s kindness and Beth’s story. “I love this story. This is everything that is good in the world. Beth, I hope you get all the upgrades you can and are able to enjoy them,” one donor wrote.
Spencer recorded the moment he informed Beth about the fundraising efforts. Her reaction was pure and emotional, as she tearfully asked, “Why?” Spencer replied, “They kind of fell in love with you and your story. We just wanted to come together as a community to help you out and get you to a better spot.” Beth’s story is a reminder of the power of community, compassion, and the ripple effect of a single act of kindness.
Spencer’s willingness to help others continues to inspire people far and wide.

Having a large glass of milk every day may cut the risk of bowel (肠) cancer by nearly a fifth, according to the largest study conducted into diet and the disease.
The 300 mg of calcium (钙) found in half a pint (品脱) of milk was associated with a 17%lower risk of bowel cancer, researchers said, with non-dairy sources of calcium such as soy milk having a similar protective effect for each 300 mg of calcium.
“This study provides evidence that dairy products may help prevent bowel cancer, largely due to the calcium they contain,” said Dr Keren Papier, the first author of the study and a senior nutritional epidemiologist at the University of Oxford. “Calcium was found to have a similar effect in both dairy and non-dairy sources, suggesting that it was the main factor responsible for cutting risk.”
Bowel cancer is the third most common cancer in the world causing nearly 2 million cases and one million deaths annually. New diagnoses (确诊) are expected to reach 3.2 million by2040, with deaths rising to 1.6 million largely because of rises in wealthy countries. For reasons that remain unclear, bowel cancer is increasing sharply in younger people. Between the early 1990s and 2018, the number of UK adults aged 25 to 49 diagnosed with bowel cancer increased by 22%.
More than half of bowel cancers are preventable through changes to diet and lifestyle. Papier and her workmates used dietary data from more than 540,000 women over nearly 17years to investigate how 97 foods, drinks and nutrients affect bowel cancer risk. The study confirmed that calcium reduces the risk, while alcohol and red or processed meats raise the risk. Each 20 g of alcohol a day was linked to a 15% higher risk of bowel cancer, while each30g of red and processed meat a day was linked to an 8% increase in the disease.
The study focused on women aged between 45 and 55, but Papier said the protective effects of calcium are expected to apply to men and younger people. “We will expand the research coverage and dig deeper into it,” she said.
8. Why does milk have a preventive effect on bowel cancer?
A. It has soy and other grains in it. B. It contains calcium.
C. It features minerals and vitamins. D. It prevents stomachaches.
9. What’s Paragraph 4 mainly about?
A. The rising tendency of bowel cancer. B. The reason leading to bowel cancer.
C. The area where bowel cancer is severe. D. The group of people bowel cancer affects.
10. What can we learn from Papier’s study?
A. Bowel cancer can be cured through diet. B. Calcium fails to prevent lung cancers.
C. Alcohol poses threats to bowel health. D. Red or processed meats should be banned.
11. What does Papier expect to do?
A. Publish her findings on Nature. B. Turn her attention to medicinal food.
C. Explore other uses of calcium. D. Do further research on men and the youth.

In cultures around the world, toys have been used to teach children about the society they live in. When the toys teach the right skills, the children are prepared for adulthood and success. When they do not, trouble approaches.
A study led by Mathilde Meyer, a PhD student at Aarhus University in Denmark, and Felix Riede, her supervisor, reveals that giving the wrong toys probably played an important part in causing the Norse settlers who came to Greenland from Iceland in 985 to escape.
Greenland was mostly covered in ice when the Norse made the journey, save for a thin plot of land along the coastline where they could farm. They lived well for a few hundred years but, as the world entered a cold period, they started to struggle. By 1400 the Norse were forced to abandon the settlements. Even so, the island remained inhabited (有人居住的): the Inuit people of northern Alaska arrived on Greenland in 1000 and endured long after the Norse gave up.
Why the Inuit survived while the Norse did not has confused archaeologists (考古学家) for decades. To try to answer the question, Ms Meyer and Dr Riede looked at as many toys as they could find played with by the children of either culture. The Norse settlements had 72 and the Inuit settlements had 2,397.
Ms Meyer and Dr Riede then assigned each toy to one of five categories. These included toys of weapons, tools, forms of transport,, for social play and for skill play. The categorisation process revealed that the toys of the Inuit children were more diverse. Most importantly, Ms Meyer and Dr Riede found that the differences in the number and diversity of toys grew dramatically over time.
Toys associated with hunting at sea became more common among the Inuit, but the Norse continued to give their children old-fashioned toys like figurines (雕刻) of horses and birds.
Though the lack of toys may indicate that Norse society was less creative from the start, the researchers argue that their tendency to give irrelevant toys made their children less flexible. In contrast, the Inuit’s preference for diverse and relevant toys paved the way for their children.
12. Why did the Norse settlers leave Greenland?
A. It was completely covered with ice. B. The cold made it not habitable for horses.
C. They found it hard to find sea food. D. They failed to adapt to the tough environment.
13. What did the categorizing of the toys indicate?
A. The Inuit gave their children more freedom. B. The Inuit provided more types of child toys.
C. The Norse offered more social-play toys. D. The Norse presented children with new toys.
14. What does the author think of the Inuit kids?
A. Adaptive. B. Traditional. C. Innocent. D. Lucky.
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Giving Children Proper Toys Matters to a Society
B. The More Toys for Kids, The Better for Their Creativity
C. New Evidence Found for the Extinction of the Norse
D. The Inuit’s Way of Developing Children’s Personality

That being creative makes us feel good seems obvious, but many of us struggle to set time aside for a new or old hobby or project. Read on for five suggestions of how to fit creativity into everyday life.
Take off the pressure.
___16___ But when we pile on the pressure, it tends to get harder to tap into. “Creativity isn’t about being perfect, but being curious and brave,” says UK-based personal potential coach Elaine Harrison.
Seize the chances in everyday life.
When thinking about creative activities, we tend to stop at arts and crafts. ___17___ Cook a brand new dish, devise a fresh outfit from clothes you already own, or adjust your living space— shifting furniture around, even, or adding a vase of flowers.
Carry a notebook.
It can be hard not to reach for your phone when you’ re craving (渴望) something novel or inspiring. ___18___ Josephine Grant, a printmaker from north Devon, always has a sketchbook (素描簿) on hand to capture fleeting bursts of inspiration. “Put those ideas to paper before they’re lost in the rush of the day,” she says.
___19___
“Our minds are always so busy,” says artist Isabella Strambio. She recommends activities that have a physical rhythm, like knitting (针织). “Once you know the knot, your mind flows,” she notes. A neurologist Marcus Raichle puts it: “When we daydream, we’re at the centre of the universe.”
Team up with others.
Teaming up with others can make you more creative, says Nicole Rixon, founder of UK-based video production company Bridget Productions. “I used to think being creative was a very lone pursuit, but creative work is a living, breathing, growing thing — it takes a village,” she says. ___20___
A. Follow a routine.
B. Leave time to dream.
C. Creativity is meant to be fun.
D. Could you join a group of travellers to beat loneliness?
E. But replacing digital with drawing can help to unlock creativity.
F. How about organising a painting group or a photography walk?
G. Actually there are plenty of ways to get your imagination flowing.

Translation is no easy task. Tang Wensheng, former Executive Vice President of the Translators Association of China, ___36___ (accept) the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award in Translation on March 30, 2024.
Her philosophy is ___37___ (root) in the belief that effective interpretation comes from practice. “Experience is the mother of ___38___ (wise),” she said.
Another important factor is concentration. “Interpreting is like playing table tennis,” she explained. “Good players focus on the ball ___39___ (fly) towards them, promptly swing their rackets and hit the ball back ___40___ (precise). For interpreters, ___41___ the speaker says at any given time is the ‘ball’. You must listen carefully and interpret accurately.”
Beyond language, Tang believes interpretation involves understanding culture and the deeper meanings behind words. “ ___42___ (do) our job well, we must understand both ourselves and the other side,” she noted, adding that as many Chinese concepts don’t have direct translation in foreign languages, translating commonly used ___43___ (term) in China literally could lead to misunderstandings.
She clarified that the best interpretation happens when the interpreter’s presence goes unnoticed. “You must accurately convey emotions. If you’re expressing protest, you can’t do it ___44___ a smile,” she said.
In Tang’s view, AI will play ____45____ increasingly important role in the future of interpretation. “AI is a very good tool and can be a great assistant to us,” she acknowledged. However, AI has its limitations, particularly when it comes to grasping the deeper meanings behind Chinese phrases. “AI will get better, but for now, it can’t replace us,” she added.

Pierre Dubois and his girl friend Maddie are dog lovers. They have two dogs, an English bulldog named Georgia and a Swiss mountain dog named Enzo. They often go volunteering on intake (新纳入者) days at a local animal rescue centre.
Volunteers on an intake day typically perform a variety of tasks to ensure smooth and safe intake of dogs. They may help greet and comfort new dogs as they arrive at the animal centre and ease their anxiety. They may also assist with transporting dogs from different locations to their intake facilities, ensuring the dogs are handled safely. Also, they may help deal with paperwork, for example, recording the dog’s information, like name, breed (品种), age, medical history and other relevant details. They even help find foster families (寄养家庭) for the dogs. They do play an important role in ensuring the well-being of the animals and the efficiency of the intake process.
Pierre Dubois and Maddie have been helping with dog intake for four years. Wilson, manager of the centre informed them to help out on weekends. Twenty-eight dogs in need of homes were arriving to be matched with foster families, and the volunteers would help get them to their homes. They spent a whole day socializing the dogs, taking them out for walks to keep them active, maintaining a clean environment for them, and waiting for their foster families.
At the end of the day, a little black dog caught Dubois and Maddie’s attention. It was quiet with eyes filled with fear. When Maddie asked Wilson about the little dog, he told her that the family that was supposed to foster it didn’t show up that day. Maddie walked to his boy friend and asked, “Could we possibly keep this little cutie for some time?” “Are you sure? We’ve got two dogs at home. Will it fit in with Georgia and Enzo?” Seeing the look on Maddie’s face, he attempted to have a try. Minutes later, Dubois approached Wilson and asked if they could keep the little black dog for several days. Wilson agreed without hesitation, but he told them to bring it back after two weeks.

【答案】 The little black dog fit in perfectly. From the moment they brought it home, Georgia and Enzo welcomed the new member warmly. They played together in the yard, and curled up next to each other for naps. The little black dog’s fear gradually disappeared, replaced by a lively and happy spirit. It followed Dubois and Maddie around the house, always eager to be part of the family activities. Dubois and Maddie found themselves growing more and more attached to this little furry friend as days passed.
Several days later, Dubois and Maddie knew they weren’t going to be giving the dog back. They couldn’t bear the thought of separating from the little black dog. They decided to talk to Wilson about adopting it permanently. When they explained their feelings to Wilson, he was very understanding. He was happy to see that the dog had found a loving and permanent home. So, with Wilson’s blessing, the little black dog officially became a long-term member of Dubois and Maddie’s family, living a happy life with Georgia and Enzo.
