In China, the elderly are forming an unusual “silver power” that makes our society more colorful in many different ways. Today, retirement (退休) doesn’t mean a free but boring life for many. It’s like a kind of new life, full of chances to explore new interests and contribute to the community.
Grandpa Liu, who used to be a tailor (裁缝), sets up a small workshop every weekend. He carefully teaches children how to sew (缝制) simple patterns, like making little cute bags. Their laughter and joy fill the room as they learn this traditional skill. Grandpa Liu often says, “Teaching these kids keeps me young at heart.” His patience and creativity inspire not only the children but also their parents, who sometimes join in to learn with their kids.
In a local library, Grandma Chen is a familiar face. She arrives on time every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. Wearing her reading glasses and a warm smile, she helps librarians organize bookshelves. When kids look lost among the large number of books, she gently guides them to the right section, whether it’s an adventure novel or a science fiction. Grandma Chen’s love for books is contagious, and she often shares stories from her favorite novels, sparking a love for reading in the young minds around her.
Out in the countryside, farmers like Grandpa Zhao are a treasure house of knowledge. With over 50 years of farming experience, he walks in the fields with young farmers, showing them the perfect time to plant seeds according to the weather and soil conditions. His advice has helped increase production year after year.
In more fields like education, science, culture spreading, health service and so on, the elderly work as volunteers to share experience and give advice. “Thank you for your email. I have left to follow my dream of knitting (编织) sweaters for penguins and no longer work for the School of Economics. I will be out of office…until my penguin friends are happy.” This is part of an email received by a Chinese student studying in the UK from her teacher, which has recently become popular online.
You may find this email surprising, but knitting sweaters for penguins is a real act of kindness. The idea was started by the Penguin Foundation (基金会) and Phillip Island Nature Parks in Australia.
The project began due to a serious oil spill (泄漏) near Phillip Island in the late 1990s. During that time, the number and health of baby penguins dropped rapidly. When little penguins became covered in oil, they tried to clean themselves with their beaks (喙), but eating the oil could be deadly. The oil also made it difficult for them to swim or hunt for food.
To solve this problem, the foundation asked knitters worldwide to make sweaters for affected (受影响的) penguins. These sweaters could keep the penguins warm during the cleaning process and stop them from eating the oil.
It’s a good method to protect penguins. In 2001, there was another oil spill near Phillip Island. Thanks to the sweaters, 96 percent of the affected penguins were successfully saved.
However, some people have questioned the idea of animals wearing human-made clothing. Certain bird protection groups have expressed worries that these sweaters might put more stress on the penguins’ bodies.
The foundation explained that the sweaters were only a short-term way and will not be used when the penguins stay healthy.
To ensure the penguins are protected and wearing appropriate clothes, the foundation has provided detailed instructions for knitters. For example, the total length of the finished sweater should be no more than 18 cm, the width across the body no more than 12 cm and the width of the bottom opening no more than 11 cm.
1. How does the writer introduce the topic of the text?

C.By telling a famous saying. D.By describing an email.
2. What does the underlined word “appropriate” in the last paragraph most likely mean?
A.proper B.thick C.plastic D.valuable
3. What does the Penguin Foundation say about the knitting project?
A.It will be a long-term way. B.It requires strict size instructions.
C.It brings unexpected advantages. D.It inspires a worldwide love of knitting.
4. What can be the best title of the text?
A.Two serious oil spills B.Knit sweaters for penguins
