A woman is travelling around the world. She is 28 years old and she is from England. The 20 000-mile-trek(徒步旅行) is called“London 2 London”. That means she can't travel by plane,and she can't catch a bus or take a oa r during her journey. She must ride a bike or walk. The woman also has a boat. Even during the horse and buggy(双轮单座轻马车) days,traffic in big cities was often heavy. Police officers had to stand in streets helping at busy crossings. On December 9, 1868, the first non-electric(非电的) traffic lights appeared in London to control the traffic on busy streets.
Later, cities like Paris, New York, Melbourne(墨尔本) tried many traffic lights but all need police officers to control them.
In 1922 Crouse Hinds was the first company to add automatic times(自动计时器) in traffic lights in their home city, Houston. It saved cities much money by replacing(取代) traffic officers.
In the 1950s, traffic lights got better with the coming of computers. The rise(兴起) of computers was the modal of traffic control from then on.
