Decades ago, my friend Caetlin received a special assignment from the poet Robert L. Hass, who was then her undergraduate literature professor. He instructed each student to memorize three poems from The Norton Anthology of American Literature — not for any urgent exam reason, he claimed, but instead to prepare them for their unavoidable future solitude (孤独). At some point, Caetlin recalls him saying, you’re going to be alone, and poetry is going to be all you have.
If the task was a strange one, it’s because the act of memorizing a poem feels curiously old-fashioned in an era when few of us encounter poetry at all. When I was in graduate school, working toward a degree in English literature, I mostly limited myself to prose. It was only in my 40s that I began to change my ways.
It happened in a flight to Seattle. For hours, I read nothing else but a poem. Sometimes I spoke its lines aloud, my voice masked by the airplane’s thrum (嗡嗡响). Sometimes I went through the whole poem at once, and sometimes I repeated a single stanza (诗节) over and over, and by the time my plane landed on the West Coast, I had the whole thing, all 40 lines of it, in my head. Because the process is as simple as it is very boring, memorizing a great poem always begins as a crime. The boredom of repetition reduces the great charm it has. But as you run your hands through the book, the lines at last come together again, and the scattered text transforms back into a treasure, often a more valuable one than it was before.
In other words, poetry survives continuously by becoming a part of those who read it. It can do so only because it is so specific, so entirely different from us, that taking it in expands our own sense of what we are.
Some of the poems I’ve memorized are already fading, and that’s fine. I know that if I spend a little time with them, they’ll sing in me again. Others keep thumping in me like a new pulse. I won’t promise you that memorizing poetry will make your life better, but it will make you more: more in touch with language, with other minds, maybe with what you might yet become.
56.Why did Robert L. Hass advise students to read poems?
A.To become literature professors. B.To prepare for the coming exams.
C.To compose more original poems. D.To relieve their future loneliness.
57.What does the underlined word “masked” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Faded. B.Heightened. C.Hided. D.Affected.
58.Why does the author say that memorizing a poem begins as a crime?
A.It’s out of date to recite poems. B.Repetition wastes a lot of time.
C.Repetition destroys the poem’s beauty. D.It’s a shame to read poems on plane.
59.How does understanding poetry influence us?
A.By broadening self-understanding. B.By refreshing our good memories.
C.By helping us survive the hard life. D.By reminding us to forget the past.
60.What is the author’s attitude towards memorizing poetry in the last paragraph?
A.Doubtful. B.Appreciative. C.Dismissive. D.Critical.

A new finding from Cambridge scientists has shown that an artificial intelligent (AI) system can acquire features of the brains of humans in order to solve tasks.
“Not only is the brain great at solving complex problems, but it does so while using very little energy. In our new work we show that considering the brains’ problem-solving abilities alongside its goal of spending as few resources as possible can help us understand why brains look like they do, ” said Jascha Achterberg, a scholar at the University of Cambridge.
In a study published in Nature Machine Intelligence, Achterberg and his colleagues created an artificial system intended to model a simplified version of the brain. Instead of real neurons (神经元) in brains, the system used computational nodes(节点).
The researchers gave the system a simple task to complete, where it had to combine multiple pieces of information to decide upon the shortest route to get to the destination. One of the reasons the team chose this particular task is that to complete it, the system needs to maintain a number of elements-start location, end location and intermediate steps-and once it has learned to do the task reliably, it is possible to observe, at different moments in a trial, which nodes are important.
Initially, the system does not know how to complete the task and makes mistakes. But when it is given feedback it gradually learns to get better at the task. The system then repeats the task until eventually it learns to perform it correctly.
Co-author Professor Duncan Astle said, “This simple task forces artificial systems to produce some quite complicated characteristics. Interestingly, they are characteristics shared by biological systems. I think that tells us something fundamental about why our brains are organised the way they are.” The team also believes their findings are likely to be of interest to the AI community, too, where they could allow for the development of more efficient systems.
61.Which best describes the brains of humans according to the text?
A.Intelligent. B.Efficient. C.Adaptive. D.Imaginative.
62.Why did researchers assign the route-finding task?
A.To require decision-making process. B.To complete it without any effort.
C.To result in various node sizes. D.To involve specific procedures.
63.What can we infer about the system from the last two paragraphs?
A.It shows limits of artificial intelligence.
B.It needs human instructions to progress.
C.It performs complicated tasks by learning.
D.It has much in common with human brains.
64.What is the research team’s attitude toward the finding?
A.Cautious. B.Enthusiastic. C.Hopeful. D.Skeptical.

Progress is something that everyone looks forward to, whether in personal life or in society. It represents our ability to change and improve the way we live. Progress is often linked to better ways of doing things. However, this idea of progress holds true only if we embrace technology and continuously seek more efficient ways of doing things.
Yet, for many people, especially those who long for the “good old days”, progress inevitably comes with sacrifices. With the rise of new technology, efficiency has greatly improved. Communication, for example, has become much more efficient. Today, people can connect with each other instantly, no matter where they are in the world. With just a click of a button, we can talk or even see each other without leaving our homes. Personal visits, where we spend time together in real life, have become less common. With mobile phones and tablets, people often no longer make the effort to visit friends and family in person, even though face-to-face interactions hold unique value in building closer relationships.
Another area where progress brings both benefits and challenges is in mass production. Factories today are much more efficient, thanks to machines and automation. This has allowed goods to be produced in large quantities with greater accuracy than human hands could ever achieve. However, the downside is that this efficiency often comes at the cost of the “personal touch”. Many items that were once handcrafted are now produced in factories. While mass production allows supply to meet demand quickly, it often leads to a decrease in quality. Handcrafted items, for example, are unique and full of character, but mass-produced versions lack individuality and the same level of craftsmanship.
Despite these challenges, it is important not to view progress from a one-sided perspective. In fact, progress has also allowed tradition to survive. Modern technology can help preserve old products and techniques, ensuring that traditional crafts are not lost. Through new technology, many old products can be revived and brought back to their original state.
Ultimately, it is people’s attitude towards progress that determines the influence technology has on society. Technology itself is flexible — it can be used in various ways depending on how we choose to apply it. The greatest challenges of progress come from those who are unwilling to adapt their mindset and embrace new ideas. When we use progress in a way that fits our needs, we can create a new future while still respecting the past.
66.According to Paragraph 1, what is necessary for progress to occur?
A.Rejecting new ideas.
B.Holding on to traditional ways.
C.Pursuing comfort over innovation.
D.Accepting technology and advances steadily.
67.The examples in Paragraph 2 illustrate____________.
A.efficiency improvements often come with a price
B.technology presents few significant drawbacks
C.the “good old days” offered greater efficiency
D.face-to-face interactions are unnecessary
68.What does the author say about mass production?
A.It has lacked great accuracy.
B.It has increased product costs.
C.It has reduced individuality in products.
D.It has entirely replaced handcrafted items.
69.What is the author’s view on the relationship between progress and tradition?
A.Progress often destroys tradition. B.Progress can help protect tradition.
C.Progress weakens traditional values. D.Progress and tradition cannot exist together.
70.What is the main idea of the last paragraph?
A.Technology must be applied in a fixed manner.
B.Progress should be adapted to meet societal needs.
C.People tend to look back on the past with deep regret.
D.The impact of technology depends on people’s attitude.

第一节 阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,按照要求完成阅读任务。
When it comes to New York City, most people probably picture in their minds the attractive lifestyles of the rich and famous or think of Broadway, Times Square and other tourist attractions. However, there is another side of New York City that is far less known. The summer after tenth grade, I went with my group on a mission trip to New York City for a week.
I had always known the existence of poverty in major cities, but I had never seen it to a degree as high as we did there. We worked at several different locations with our small groups. One day, we served at a soup kitchen and what I saw astounded me. I couldn’t believe my eyes. We saw people from all walks of life. We met people who came there because they had no job, no home and no money. Another day, we volunteered at a homeless shelter. We helped people there do some cleaning and spent time talking to them and listening to their stories. It was incredible to see how thankful they were to us for just spending a couple of hours talking to them, or just be listening.
Every person we met on that trip had a unique story, and they were surprisingly willing to share. They were just in so much need to be listened to. Besides, whatever their stories were, there was a common thread we saw in them—hope. These were people who had nothing and yet they were so hopeful about their future.
My experience during that summer changed my life. I used to picture my future as containing a big house, fancy cars and a lot of money, but now I see my future differently. I hope it will be one where I can be helpful to others and give back to society. After college, I would really like to work for some sort of global aid organization that deals with the social issues, such as poverty and homelessness.
