根据文中对《The Venice Experiment: A Year of Trial and Error Living Abroad》的描述“A few years ago, real-life American couple, Barry and Debbie decided to escape the rat race and live in Venice for a year. This is the story of their experiences there, and it’s full of funny anecdotes (奇闻轶事) about their struggle to adapt to the Venetian lifestyle. A fellow author said, ‘For anyone thinking of an overseas adventure, The Venice Experiment is a laugh-out-loud read.’ (几年前,现实生活中的美国夫妇巴里和黛比决定逃离激烈的竞争,去威尼斯生活一年。这是他们在那里的经历故事,充满了他们努力适应威尼斯生活方式的有趣轶事。一位同行作者说:‘对于任何想进行海外冒险的人来说,《威尼斯实验》是一本让人捧腹大笑的读物。’)”可知,这本书记录了一对夫妇在国外生活的经历和适应过程,对于计划出国生活的人会有帮助。故选D项。
B
I’m losing my hair. I mention this not to get your sympathy (同情); don’t worry, this article will not be an exposition on how upset it is that my body is subjected to the effects of time. It’s just a fact, and honestly, I’m fine with it.
Don’t get me wrong: if this had happened when I was 25, I would have traveled to an Istanbul clinic by plane with a wallet full of credit cards faster than you could say “Elton”.
I would have had a baseball cap glued to my scalp (头皮), like Ron Howard. I would have hired a psychiatrist (精神病医生), put him on speed dial, and shed more tears than Gwyneth at the Oscars.
But at 40, I’m fine with it. I’m a married father of two, unburdened by maintaining a Tinder profile. I’m tall, and bald (秃顶) from the top, so everyone who is shorter than me (i.e, most people) can’t even see my scalp. Most comfortingly, I stick to the knowledge that I had “good hair” for the first 30-ish years of my life. Not surprisingly, of course: the hair of my school photos is half Boris Johnson, half Rose West. But hairdressers would always praise me (I guess because there’s little else to chat about with a restless, football-hating boy) for my “great hair”.
When I was an intern (实习生) at The Guardian, their design editor at the time, the respected Jonathan Glancey, once identified me in the hall because he’d been told my hair was “pre-Raphaelite” (I took this to mean I looked cultured and classical, rather than old-school).
In any case, it’s thinning gradually: I’ve probably got another five years before I get bald completely. Nonetheless, this raises an interesting question: why am I still spending £50 getting my hair cut?
4. What is the author’s attitude toward losing his hair?
A. He is indifferent and has accepted it as a natural part of aging.
B. He is deeply upset and seeks sympathy.
C. He is actively seeking medical treatments to repair hair loss.
D. He is upset and blames his lifestyle for the hair loss.
5. How does the author write the text?
A. Seriously. B. Indifferently. C. Bitterly. D. Humorously.
6. Why does the author mention Jonathan Glancey in the text?
A. To show that he was once a famous hair model.
B. To highlight how his hair was once described as “pre-Raphaelite”.
C. To criticize Jonathan Glancey’s opinion about his hair.
D. To explain how he got a job at The Guardian because of his hair.
7. What does the author find ironic (令人啼笑皆非的) about his current situation?
A. He is spending £50 on haircuts despite his hair thinning.
B. He is losing hair even though he uses expensive hair products.
C. He is consulting a psychiatrist about his hair loss.
D. He is wearing a baseball cap to hide his baldness.
A 5. D 6. B 7. A
根据第一段中“I mention this not to get your sympathy (同情); don’t worry, this article will not be an exposition on how upset it is that my body is subjected to the effects of time. It’s just a fact, and honestly, I’m fine with it.(我提到这件事不是为了得到你的同情;别担心,这篇文章不会阐述我的身体受到时间影响是多么令人沮丧。这只是一个事实,老实说,我对此没什么意见)”以及第三段中“But at 40, I’m fine with it.(但到了 40 岁,我对此没什么意见)”可推知,作者对脱发这件事并不在意,并且已经接受了这是衰老的自然一部分。故选A项。
从文中作者描述如果25岁脱发会有的夸张行为,如“I would have traveled to an Istanbul clinic by plane with a wallet full of credit cards faster than you could say ‘Elton’.(我会比你说出“埃尔顿”这个词还快地带着装满信用卡的钱包乘飞机去伊斯坦布尔的一家诊所)”、“I would have had a baseball cap glued to my scalp (头皮), like Ron Howard.(我会像罗恩・霍华德那样,把一顶棒球帽粘在头皮上)”、“I would have hired a psychiatrist (精神病医生), put him on speed dial, and shed more tears than Gwyneth at the Oscars.(我会雇一名精神病医生,把他设为快速拨号联系人,并且比格温妮丝在奥斯卡颁奖典礼上哭得还多)”等内容可推知,作者以幽默的方式来写这篇文章。
根据倒数第二段“When I was an intern (实习生) at The Guardian, their design editor at the time, the respected Jonathan Glancey, once identified me in the hall because he’d been told my hair was ‘pre-Raphaelite’ (I took this to mean I looked cultured and classical, rather than old-school).(当我在《卫报》实习时,当时的设计编辑,受人尊敬的乔纳森・格兰西,有一次在大厅里认出了我,因为有人告诉他我的头发是“前拉斐尔派风格的”(我认为这意味着我看起来有文化、古典,而不是守旧))”可推知,作者提到乔纳森・格兰西是为了强调他的头发曾经被描述为“前拉斐尔派风格的”。
根据最后一段“Nonetheless, this raises an interesting question: why am I still spending £50 getting my hair cut?(尽管如此,这就提出了一个有趣的问题:为什么我仍然要花 50 英镑去理发呢?)” 故选A项。

Now, some Chinese restaurant owners are working on brand building and streamlining (精简) operations, hoping to crack a wider market.

Meng Bing, founder of the store, is a native of Shaanxi, and now has more than 70 Rougamo stores in Beijing, Hua Shang Daily reported.
“Despite gaining international influence, there is still a long way to go for the Chinese snack chains in challenging the likes of KFC and McDonald’s in the West,” Zhu Danneng, a veteran food industry analyst, told the Global Times.

Creative work used to be human-only. That’s no longer the case, as AI has showed its ability to create paintings, compose songs, and write news stories. In a new expression of its ever-widening artistic ability, AI is generating and improving traditional Chinese poems. Researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China and Ping An Technology recently presented a novel framework (机制) for high-quality Chinese poetry generation.
Due to the nuanced (差别细微的) character choices and other unique literal characteristics, automatic generation of Chinese poetry is challenging for AI, and high-quality poems can hardly be generated by end-to-end methods. The researchers therefore developed a framework made up of a BERT-based encoder-decoder (编码-解码) structure to first generate a poem draft, and a new Quality-Aware Masked Language Model (QA-MLM) to improve the draft for better quality.
QA-MLM was also designed to appraise a poem’s quality in terms of meaning, sentence structures and literary value. It can not only locate improper characters but also replace them with better ones based on the context information. QA-MLM will automatically end the polishing process when the edited draft is classified as qualified.
Trained and tested with about 130,000 poems from five dynasties, three models (key-2-one, one-2-one, and two-2-one) were used to generate the poem drafts. Then QA-MLM came in to perform polishing.
Both evaluation (评价) by humans and automatic evaluation examining factors such as tone accuracy and rhythm accuracy showed that the new approach is effective in Chinese poetry generation. Moreover, QA-MLM can even improve the consistency, fluency, meaningfulness and poeticness of poems generated by the three models tested.
Although QA-MLM research is currently focused only on Chinese poetry generation, its text improving approach could be extended to other natural language generation areas. For writers of today who struggle with word choice, the algorithmic (算法) editing input could be welcome.
12. What is the main purpose of the QA-MLM in the context of Chinese poetry generation?
A. To generate poem drafts from scratch.
B. To translate Chinese poems into other languages.
C. To polish and improve the quality of poem drafts.
D. To create new poetic forms.
13. What does the underlined word “appraise” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. process. B. evaluate C. improve. D. check.
14. What potential application of QA-MLM is mentioned beyond Chinese poetry generation?
A. Translating ancient texts.
B. Generating music lyrics.
C. Creating new languages.
D. Extending to other natural language generation areas.
15. Which can be a suitable title for the text?
A. AI’s Role in Traditional Chinese Poetry Generation
B. The Nuanced Character Choices and Unique Literal Characteristics
C. The Complexity of the Chinese Language
D. The Need for Human Creativity
C 13. B 14. D 15. A

根据第二段中“The researchers therefore developed a framework made up of a BERT-based encoder-decoder (编码 - 解码) structure to first generate a poem draft, and a new Quality-Aware Masked Language Model (QA-MLM) to improve the draft for better quality. (因此,研究人员开发了一个由基于 BERT 的编码-解码结构组成的框架,首先生成一首诗的草稿,然后使用一种新的质量感知掩码语言模型(QA-MLM)来改进草稿,以提高质量。)”可知,QA-MLM的主要作用是改进诗歌草稿以提升质量,即对草稿进行润色和完善。故选C项。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第三段“QA-MLM was also designed to appraise a poem’s quality in terms of meaning, sentence structures and literary value. It can not only locate improper characters but also replace them with better ones based on the context information. (QA-MLM 还被设计用于从意义、句子结构和文学价值方面appraise一首诗的质量。它不仅可以找出不恰当的字词,还可以根据上下文信息用更好的字词来替换它们。)”,从“in terms of meaning, sentence structures and literary value (从意义、句子结构和文学价值方面)”以及后面“locate improper characters but also replace them with better ones based on the context information (找出不恰当的字词并根据上下文信息用更好的字词来替换它们)”这些描述,可以推断出appraise是对诗歌质量进行评估的意思。
根据最后一段“Although QA-MLM research is currently focused only on Chinese poetry generation, its text improving approach could be extended to other natural language generation areas. (尽管 QA-MLM 的研究目前只集中在中国诗歌生成方面,但其文本改进方法可以扩展到其他自然语言生成领域。)”可知,除了中国诗歌生成之外,QA-MLM 的潜在应用是扩展到其他自然语言生成领域。故选D项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文可知,文章开篇提到“Creative work used to be human-only. That’s no longer the case, as AI has showed its ability to create paintings, compose songs, and write news stories. In a new expression of its ever-widening artistic ability, AI is generating and improving traditional Chinese poems. 故选A项。

这里考查谓语动词,主语I与travel为主动关系,再根据时间状语up to now可知,该句时态要用现在完成时,主语是I,所以用have traveled或have travelled。故填have traveled或have travelled。

故填What。
故填which。
故填more。

About three years ago, something terrible happened to me. That was the day when it took only six hours to break my body and soul. You think I am a very old man—but I am not. It took less than a single day to change my hair from black to white.
One day, my two brothers and I were coming back from the islands where we often risked going and got more fish than others. All at once, the sky was covered with dark clouds and in less than a minute we were in a terrible storm. A huge wave covered our boat and my younger brother fell into the sea. My elder brother put his mouth close to my ear and cried out “Moskoe-strom!” The moment I heard the word I became very frightened. I knew what he meant by that one word well enough.
With the wind and waves, we were going in the direction of the whirlpool. We were hopeless. Nothing could save us. I felt sick, as if I was falling from a mountain top in a dream. We went round and round, nearer and nearer to the horrible edge of the whirlpool. It may appear strange, but at that moment, when we were on the edge of the whirlpool, I felt calmer than when we were moving towards it. I began to think how amazing a thing it was to die in such a way, and how wonderful it was to see the power of nature. Suddenly, we went over the edge. I thought my life was over. But moment after moment passed, and I was still safe.
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1: The boat was on the inside of the huge whirlpool and we were going round in circles at great speed.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: As you can see, the reason why I’m here to tell the story is that I made the right decision.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The boat was on the inside of the huge whirlpool and we were going round in circles at great speed. I held on to the boat tightly, my heart pounding in my chest. I could see my brothers’ terrified faces. The noise of the water was deafening. Then, I was surprised to notice that the objects in the whirlpool were not all pulled to the bottom at the same rate. Lighter things seemed to stay on the surface longer. I quickly made a decision. I shouted to my brothers to tie themselves to the empty barrels on the boat. But my elder brother was too panicked to respond, and my younger brother was already nowhere to be seen in the wild water.
As you can see, the reason why I’m here to tell the story is that I made the right decision. I tied myself firmly to a barrel. The force of the whirlpool was still strong, but the barrel kept me floating. Hours passed like years. Finally, the storm began to weaken, and the whirlpool’s power decreased. I was gradually carried out of the danger zone. When I was rescued by a passing ship, I was in a state of extreme exhaustion. The experience had changed me forever, making me respect the power of nature even more.

B He is deeply upset and seeks sympathy.

From duck blood soup with vernicelli to donkey burger, traditional Chinese food served at street food stalls for breakfast, lunch, and dinner has become the “calling card” for many Chinese cities. Now, some Chinese restaurant owners are working on brand building and streamlining (精简) operations, hoping to crack a wider market.
River snail rice noodles is an example of the successful transformation from humble street food to a national favorite. From the birth of the first pre-packaged river snail rice noodles company at the end of 2014, it only took 6 years for the industry’s output to exceed 10 billion yuan ($1.5 billion) in 2020, Xinhua News Agency reported.
Originally from South China’s Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, the noodle dish became a best-selling food product on Alibaba’s e-commerce platform Taobao in 2019. In 2020, sales of river snail rice noodles on e-commerce platform Tmall jumped by 800percent year-on-year. In the first quarter of 2021, sales climbed by more than 30 percent, according to the data Tmall sent to the Global Times on Tuesday. Prepared servings of river snail rice noodles are now exported to over 20 countries and regions, and this business has created about 250,000 jobs across the production cycle, Xinhua News Agency reported.
As one of the specialties of West China’s Shaanxi, Rougamo (肉夹馍), or Chinese meat burger, not only has a high reputation in China, but also has gained popularity abroad. Recently, a Rougamo store named Xi Shaoye in Toronto has become popular, with a queue line often hundreds of meters long, quickly rising to the top of the local review site Yelp’s burger list. Meng Bing, founder of the store, is a native of Shaanxi, and now has more than 70 Rougamo stores in Beijing, Hua Shang Daily reported.

Creative work used to be human-only. That’s no longer the case as AI has showed its ability to create paintings, compose songs, and write news stories.
