Planning a visit to the UK? Here we help with ways to cut your costs.
AVOID BIG EVENTS Big sporting events, concerts and exhibitions can increase the cost of accommodation (膳宿) and make it harder to find a room. A standard double room at the Thistle Brighton on the final Friday of the Brighton Comedy Festival (19 Oct.) cost £169.15 at Booking.com. A week later, the same room cost £118.15.
If you can be flexible and want to know dates to avoid or you’re looking for a big event to pass your time—checkoutsitessuchasWhatsonwhen.com, which allow you to search for events in the UK by city, date and category.
STAY AWAY FROM THE STATION If traveling to your destination by train, you may want to find a good base close to the station, but you could end up paying more for the sake of convenience at the start of your holiday.
Don’t be too choosy about the part of town you stay in. If you book two months in advance, the cheapest room at Travelodge’s Central Euston hotel in London for Saturday, September 22 was £95.95. A room just a tube journey away at its Covent Garden hotel was £75.75. And at Farringdon, a double room cost just £62.95.
GET ON A BIKE London’s “Boris bikes” have attracted the most attention, but other cities also have similar programmes that let you rent a bicycle and explore at your own pace, saving you on public transport or car parking costs.
Among the smaller cities with their own programmes are Newcastle (casual members pay around £1.50 for two hours) and Cardiff (free for up to 30 minutes, or £5 per day).

Montessori was born in Italy in 1870 with progressive parents, who frequently communicated with the country’s leading thinkers and scholars. This enlightened family environment provided Montessori with many advantages over other young girls of the time.
Her mother’s support was vital for some important decisions, such as her further study in a technical school after her elementary education. Her parents’ support also proved to be essential for her decision to study medicine, a field that was dominated by men.
Soon after graduating, in 1896, Montessori began work as a voluntary assistant in a clinic at the University of Rome, where she cared for children with learning difficulties. The rooms were empty, with just a few pieces of furniture. One day, she found that the children were enthusiastically playing with breadcrumbs (面包屑) that had dropped on the floor. It then occurred to her that the origin of some intellectual disabilities could be related with poverty. With the right learning materials, these and other young minds could be trained, Montessori concluded.
The observation would lead Montessori to develop a new method of education that focused on providing better stimulation during the sensitive periods of childhood.
At its centre was the principle (原则) that all the learning materials should be child-sized and designed to appeal to all the senses. In addition, each child should be allowed to move and act freely, and use their creativity and problem-solving skills. Teachers took the role of guides, supporting the children without press or control.
Montessori opened her first Children’s House in 1907. When the Fascists (法西斯主义者) first came into power in Italy in 1922, they welcomed her movement at the beginning. But they soon came to oppose the emphasis on the children’s freedom of expression. Montessori's values had always been about human respect and the rights of children and women, but the Fascists wanted to use her work and her fame.
Things reached a breaking point when the Fascist tried to influence the schools’ educational content, and in 1934 Montessori and her son decided to leave Italy. She didn’t return to her homeland until 1947, and she continued to write about and develop her method until her death in 1952, at the age of 81.
4. What was the main reason for Montessori to develop a new educational method?
A. Her experience as a voluntary assistant in a clinic.
B. Her family’s supportive influence on her education.
C. Her decision to study medicine, a field dominated by men.
D. Her observation of children playing with breadcrumbs happily.
5. What was a central principle of Montessori’s educational method?
A. Focusing on group competition. B. Taking control of children’s action.
C. Providing one-size-fits-all learning materials. D. Creating a free and child-centered environment.
6. Why did Montessori decide to leave Italy in 1934?
A. She was offered a better job in a different country.
B. She was forced to give up her work and her fame.
C. She wanted to avoid the influence from the Fascist.
D. She wanted to explore other countries and cultures.
7. Which of the following words can best describe Montessori in this passage?
A. Enthusiastic and kind. B. Observant and innovative.
C. Cooperative and generous. D. Traditional and emotional.
D 5. D 6. C 7. B

It then occurred to her that the origin of some intellectual disabilities could be related with poverty.(一天,她发现孩子们正兴高采烈地玩着掉在地上的面包屑。
根据第五段“At its centre was the principle (原则) that all the learning materials should be child-sized and designed to appeal to all the senses. In addition, each child should a so be allowed to move and act freely, and use their creativity and problem-solving skills. C
An AI-generated image posted online shows a modern-day Donald Trump hugging late Elvis Presley tightly. Upon seeing those funny but mindless pictures, people seem to be drawn into a strange circle. They can’t help but repeatedly view similar pictures and enjoy the process, as if addicted. You could say that this is harmless. But what is it adding to the world?
The heavy sigh and slightly hungover (难受的) feeling this type of contents brings about might best be described as brain rot, an Oxford’s 2024 Word of the Year.
Brain rot is when someone’s mental or intellectual state gets worse, especially as a result of overconsuming low-quality, low-value online content, which is considered trivial. It comes from all those meaningless images and videos that don’t stir the soul. Initially gaining attraction on social media platform, brain rot is now seeing more widespread use. The term increased in usage frequency by 230% between 2023 and 2024.
Although it seems very modern, brain rot, as a phrase, dates back to Henry David Thoreau. As Oxford University Press notes on its website, the first recorded use of brain rot is found in Thoreau’s 1854 book Walden. Thoreau criticizes society’s tendency to devalue (使贬值) ideas. He believes this is a sign of a wider decline in mental and intellectual effort. “While England tries to cure the potato rot, will no effort be made to cure the brain rot, which is much more widespread and deadly?”
For better or worse (almost certainly worse), the distinction between our online and offline lives has been disappearing for years, and the line is now all but gone. The best thing we can do is see it all as life itself, and know that whatever feeling we are dealing with is a version of what Thoreau dealt with 170 years ago. Only slightly more stupid.
8. Why does the author mention the image posted online?
A. To deepen thinking. B. To lead in a concept.
C. To present advanced technology. D. To introduce famous persons.
9. What does the underlined word “trivial” probably mean?
A. Unimportant. B. Uncertain. C. Dishonorable. D. Impossible.
10. How might Thoreau feel when he referred to Brain rot?
A. Doubtful. B. Indifferent. C. Concerned. D. Optimistic.
11. According to the passage, who may have brain rot?
A. People browsing videos aimlessly. B. Professors criticizing society’s tendency.
C. Netizens sharing pictures online. D. Office workers writing reports offline.
B 9. A 10. C 11. A

根据第一段“An AI-generated image posted online shows a modern-day Donald Trump hugging late Elvis Presley tightly. Upon seeing those funny but mindless pictures, people seem to be drawn into a strange circle. They can’t help but repeatedly view similar pictures and enjoy the process, as if addicted. You could say that this is harmless. But what is it adding to the world?(网上发布的一张人工智能生成的照片显示,现代版的唐纳德·特朗普紧紧拥抱已故的猫王。一看到这些滑稽而愚蠢的图片,人们似乎就被拉进了一个奇怪的圈子。他们忍不住反复观看类似的图片,并享受这个过程,就像上瘾了一样。你可以说这是无害的。但它给世界带来了什么?)”以及第二段“The heavy sigh and slightly hungover (难受的) feeling this type of contents brings about might best be described as brain rot, an Oxford’s 2024 Word of the Year.(这种内容所带来的沉重的叹息和轻微的宿醉感可能最适合形容为“脑腐”,这是牛津大学2024年的年度词汇)”可知,作者提到网上发布的图片是为了引入一种观念。
根据划线词上文“Brain rot is when someone’s mental or intellectual state gets worse, especially as a result of overconsuming low-quality, low-value online content, which is considered(脑腐指的是某人的精神或智力状态恶化,尤其是由于过度消费低质量、低价值的网络内容,这些内容被认为是……)”以及后文“It comes from all those meaningless images and videos that don’t stir the soul.(它来自于那些毫无意义的图片和视频,它们不会触动灵魂)”可知,“脑腐”来自于那些毫无意义的图片和视频,它们不会触动灵魂,说明不重要。 故选A。
根据倒数第二段“Thoreau criticizes society’s tendency to devalue (使贬值) ideas. He believes this is a sign of a wider decline in mental and intellectual effort. “While England tries to cure the potato rot, will no effort be made to cure the brain rot, which is much more widespread and deadly?”(梭罗批评社会贬低思想价值的倾向。他认为,这是一种普遍的心理和智力努力下降的迹象。“在英国试图治愈马铃薯腐烂病的同时,难道就不会努力治疗更为广泛和致命的脑腐烂病吗?”)”可知,当梭罗提到脑腐时,他感到担心。故选C。

As a psychologist who researches winter, I hear a common complaint — at parties, in interviews, at the coffee shop: “Oh, yeah, I definitely have seasonal affective disorder, or SAD.”
SAD was first described in the early 1980s by psychiatrist Norman Rosenthal. Today, it’s defined as a subtype (子类型) of clinical depression, one that usually appears as the days get shorter and then recovers each spring when the temperature warms and the sun returns. Most people, who struggle with winter, probably have a very normal response to winter’s cold, dark days: feeling less energetic, less social and less motivated.
Almost every living thing changes its behavior in winter. It is natural that we would be affected by changes in our environment, by shifts in light and dark. Historically, people had to adjust their behavior in winter. Preparation was required to make it through a season when food wasn’t as readily available. Without electricity, rhythms were decided by the sun, and more time was spent sleeping during the darkest days of the year.
Living in Tromsø, I struggled at times with its darkness, particularly in December. But when I could take a cue (暗示) from the Norwegians around me and adventure out — taking a wintry walk, heading downtown to see the Christmas lights, meeting friends for coffee and a movie — I found myself enjoying the fresh winter air, the unbelievable blueness of the polar night and the comforting atmosphere of the city. I learned from those around me how to lean in to the winter, rather than trying to fight it.
This winter, take a cue from the people who winter well by embracing the slow delights of the season. Adapting to the season can help us feel healthier. See tiredness as a motivation to sleep more or find rest in other ways. If you feel like socializing less, allow that to make space for solo pursuits (个人追求): reading, baking or enjoying delicious food.
12. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. SAD’s origin. B. SAD’s duration. C. SAD’s symptoms. D. SAD’s effects.
13. What cause people to adjust their behavior in winter?
A. Environmental changes. B. Historical reasons. C. Food supplies. D. Living rhythms.
14. What inspiration does the researcher get from Norwegians?
A. If you suffer from winter, try to fight it.
B. Never change your relationship with winter.
C. Everything will be OK when you leave it alone.
D. If you feel winter’s effects, try to work with them.
15. Which may be the best title of the passage?
A. Embrace of winter B. Cue from darkness
C. Rhythm of season D. Refreshment from depression
C 13. A 14. D 15. A

根据第二段“SAD was first described in the early 1980s by psychiatrist Norman Rosenthal. Today, it’s defined as a subtype (子类型) of clinical depression, one that usually appears as the days get shorter and then recovers each spring when the temperature warms and the sun returns. Most people, who struggle with winter, probably have a very normal response to winter’s cold, dark days: feeling less energetic, less social and less motivated.(精神病学家诺曼·罗森塔尔在20世纪80年代初首次描述了SAD。今天,它被定义为临床抑郁症的一种亚型,通常出现在白天变短的时候,然后在每年春天气温变暖、太阳回来的时候恢复。大多数与冬天作斗争的人,可能对冬天寒冷、黑暗的日子有一个非常正常的反应:感觉精力不足,社交能力不足,缺乏动力)”可知,第二段主要讲的是SAD的症状。故选C项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Almost every living thing changes its behavior in winter. It is natural that we would be affected by changes in our environment, by shifts in light and dark. Historically, people had to adjust their behavior in winter.Preparation was required to make it through a season when food wasn’t as readily available. Without electricity, rhythms were decided by the sun, and more time was spent sleeping during the darkest days of the year.(几乎每一种生物在冬天都会改变它们的行为。 故选A项。
根据第四段中“But when I could take a cue (暗示) from the Norwegians around me and adventure out — taking a wintry walk, heading downtown to see the Christmas lights, meeting friends for coffee and a movie — I found myself enjoying the fresh winter air, the unbelievable blueness of the polar night and the comforting atmosphere of the city. I learned from those around me how to lean in to the winter, rather than trying to fight it.(但是,当我能够从周围的挪威人那里得到启发,开始冒险出去——在冬天散步,去市中心看圣诞灯,和朋友们喝咖啡,看电影——我发现自己在享受冬天的新鲜空气,极地夜晚难以置信的蓝色,以及城市舒适的氛围。我从周围的人那里学会了如何面对冬天,而不是试图与它抗争)”可推知,研究人员从挪威人那里得到的启发是如果你感觉到了冬天的影响,试着去适应它。故选D项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章大意以及最后一段“This winter, take a cue from the people who winter well by embracing the slow delights of the season. Adapting to the season can help us feel healthier. See tiredness as a motivation to sleep more or find rest in other ways. If you feel like socializing less, allow that to make space for solo pursuits (个人追求): reading, baking or enjoying delicious food.(这个冬天,从那些善于过冬的人那里得到启示,拥抱这个季节缓慢的快乐。 故选A项。

Mary was the art teacher for primary school students. On this particular day, she was guiding them through the process of drawing a scenic landscape. Akila yawned(打哈欠), clearly disinterested - drawing wasn’t her thing. A small group of students gathered around Tina, laughing at her unusual drawing: a sun sporting sunglasses and trees topped with ice cream cones.
Mary instructed Tina firmly but with unease, “Draw it the way I showed you.” As the lesson continued, doubt crept into Mary’s mind. Had the joy of creativity been overshadowed by the pressure to fit in? She scanned the room, observing her students’ faces – some concentrated, others uncertain. Akila’s disinterest was clear and Tina’s imaginative drawing had been met with ridicule instead of praise.
After class, Mary sat down with Tina, her tone softening, “Why did you draw the sun with sunglasses and the trees with ice creams?” she asked gently.
Tina’s eyes sparkled with a touch of rebellion (叛逆)-“I love ice cream, and I thought the sun would look cool with sunglasses. Why do we always have to draw like everyone else?”
Mary paused, her thoughts racing. Tina’s drawings weren’t just curious —they were a window into a world where imagination ruled, where rales could be bent into delightful chaos. Was she, by enforcing a rigid style, killing that very creativity?
The next morning, Mary walked into the classroom with a renewed sense of purpose. She placed a large sheet of paper in front of the class and announced a new project: they would create a collective(集体的)artwork titled “Our Dream World” with no rules. They were free to use colors, shapes, and patterns however they wished.
At first, the students hesitated, unsure of this newfound freedom. Akila leaned back, skeptical of what seemed like another pointless exercise. But Tina, her creativity no longer restricted, eagerly grabbed her crayons and began to draw with abandon. Then, Maya joined in. And then Michael...
注意:
1.所续写短文的词数应为150左右;

As the students worked, Mary observed them with curiosity.

Mary stood back and surveyed the creation.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 1: As the students worked. Mary observed them with curiosity. She noticed how Akila, initially disinterested, had quietly chosen vibrant colors and was now blending them together to create a swirling sky filled with fantastical creatures that flew over a stone castle. Meanwhile, Tina was enthusiastically adding playful details to her section of the paper-a whimsical garden where flowers wore hats and creatures rested on the ice cream-topped trees. Mary felt a wave of relief washed over her. The room was alive with chatter and laughter, as Akila and Tina frequently exchanged ideas and inspired one another. Akila even leaned over to admire Tina’s ice cream trees and said, “That is mind-blowing!” It was wonderful to see them cooperate, their initial differences melting away in the warmth of shared creativity.
Paragraph 2: Mary stood back and surveyed the creation. The enomious canvas had transformed into a magnificent portrayal of each student’s imagination, forming a breathtaking landscape that reflected their individuality yet spoke to their collective spirit. Mary felt a sense of pride swell within her; she realized that in letting go of rigid structures, her students gave their painting an unrealistic but dream-like quality. Akila, Tina, and the rest of the class had not only embraced their own creative paths but had also nurtured each other’s ideas. They were thrilled, “It was the best painting ever! We should definitely hang it on the wall!” Inspired by the moment, Mary decided to host an exhibition of their dream world, inviting parents and other classes to admire the beauty of imagination unleashed in her classroom.
