What do you do with clothes you don’t want to wear any more? You may donate them or give them to other people. What happens next? Where do these clothes end up?
Sadly, the beaches of Ghana, a country in West Africa, are among these places. Now, the beaches are covered with clothing waste.
People from all over the world donate clothes to charity. However, charity shops only sell up to 20 percent of donated clothes. The unsold clothes are then put in large bags and travel to other countries to be sold again or for waste disposal (处理).
The Kantamanto market in Accra, the capital of Ghana, is one of the world’s largest secondhand clothing markets. Every week, 20 million pieces of clothes arrive at Kantamanto. But about 40 percent of them leave the market as waste.
Workers either burn the waste or put it underground. However, the city is near the sea, so there’s not enough space for landfills. This is why a lot of clothing waste ends up on the beach.
As it goes into the sea, fish and other sea life are in danger. Sea turtles can’t get to the land, and fish can’t grow because they may get caught in the clothes.
The waste is also hurting the economy (经济). Fishers can’t catch as many fish as before since most of the things they catch are clothes.
FAST FASHION WASTE
● 92 million
Every year, 92 million tons of clothes end up in landfills. This means that every second a truck full of clothes arrives at a landfill.
● 7 to 10 times

20. In Paragraph 2, it tells that the beaches of Ghana are covered with ________ now.

21. How many pieces of clothes end up as waste every week at Kantamanto market?
A. 4 million. B. 8 million. C. 20 million.

A. To call on people to recycle their clothes.
B. To ask people to throw away their old clothes.

What kind of insect do you hate the most? Many people would probably answer “cockroaches”. Some are even very afraid of this insect. But, believe it or not, this “scary” insect may soon become a great hero!
As we all know, cockroaches are able to live in almost any kind of environment. And they can get into tight spaces. This is why scientists have decided to turn them into “cyborg (半人半机器的生物)” insects. They will be used to locate missing people in search and rescue tasks. This can help shorten the saving time and reduce the number of dead people.
The cockroach “cyborg” carries a tiny life detector (探测器) on its back. It weighs only 0.7 grams and can send back the location of the insect. Scientists also put electrodes (电极) into the cockroach’s antennae (触须). This helps them to guide the insect into the search area.
Today, these rescue “cyborgs” are still being tested in the lab. Scientists say they are likely to be put into use within the next five years. “These insects will do the dangerous and difficult work for us,” one of the scientists said, “We believe they are the future of search and rescue!”

A. Because they are the insects that many people hates most.

White Cane Safety Day
White Cane Safety Day is a day to increase the awareness of the white cane. Do you know about it?
In 1921, James Biggs, from England, became blind because of an accident and then he was the first person to use a cane to get around. Biggs had his cane painted white to make it easier to be seen. In 1930, George Bonham, President of the Peoria Lions Club, suggested painting the cane white with a red band to make it more noticeable. In 1937, the state of Michigan recognized the importance of the white cane as a symbol for blind people. It passed a law that protected blind people using white canes while traveling on the streets. In 1984, the World Blind Union made October 15th “White Cane Safety Day”.
White Cane Safety Day has become a symbol of freedom, independence, and confidence. For blind people, the white cane is an important tool that gives them ability to achieve a full and independent life. It allows them to move freely and safely from place to place—whether it’s at work, at school, or around their neighborhoods.
Some organizations hold many activities, such as walks, meetings and public service to celebrate the day. Besides, they give away special T-shirts to remind people about the day.
Blind people need an understanding of the public. They need society to recognize their abilities and give them a chance to show their talents.

【答案】例文
An Unforgettable Thing
If you ask my unforgettable event, I will tell you a story about me and a little dog.
Last Saturday afternoon, I took a walk in a park nearby. When I was going back, a dog walked after me. It followed me until I got to the door of my house. When I opened the door, it was sitting on the ground and looking at me sadly as if it was saying, “I got lost. Could you please help me?” “What a poor dog!” I thought. Then I let it in and gave it some food and water. After that, I put up a notice in our neighborhood.
The next day the owner of the dog came to my house and picked it up. He thanked me a lot before leaving. I was very happy because I was able to give others a hand.

Many fast fashion clothes are worn only 7 to 10 times, then they are thrown away. Around 15 years ago, this number was 10 to 15 times.
20. In Paragraph 2, it tells that the beaches of Ghana are covered with ________ now.
A. large bags B. clothing waste C. sea turtles
21. How many pieces of clothes end up as waste every week at Kantamanto market?
A. 4 million. B. 8 million. C. 20 million.
22. Why does the writer list the number in the “FAST FASHION WASTE”?
A. To call on people to recycle their clothes.
B. To ask people to throw away their old clothes.
C. To encourage people to buy fast fashion clothes.
23. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. Clothes waste is causing problems.
B. Clothes waste influences the global economy.
C. Ghana does well in dealing with donated clothes.
C
24. Why have scientists decided to turn cockroaches into “cyborgs”?
A Because they are the insects that many people hates most.
B. Because most of people think that they are great heroes.
C Because they can live almost anywhere and get into tight spaces.
25. What does the underlined word “rescue” mean?
A. save. B. study. C. explore.
26. What can we know from the text?
A. The life detector on the cockroach’s back is heavy.
B. There are electrodes in the cockroach’s antennae.
C. These rescue “cyborgs” are being put into use now.
27 What can we infer from the scientists’ words in the last paragraph?
A. The cyborgs will probably last for five years in the future.
B. The cyborgs will probably do all dangerous and difficult work.
C. The cyborgs will probably be widely used in search and rescue.
