My friend keeps copying my look, but I like looking special. What should I do? —Ann
The important thing is to tell your friend the truth without hurting her feelings. To do that, you can talk to her using kind words and not feeling angry. You can offer her your advice on popular dressing or even suggest wearing clothes that go together. This way you’ll still look like each other, but not twins!
My room is always messy. No matter what I do, I can’t keep it clean! —Mike
Here are some great ways to make your room a bit tidier. Start by picking up things you don’t use or want anymore. You can give them away to those in need. Less things means less mess! Then, try to make it a habit to put away things after you use them. Done with your sports shoes for the day? Back where they should be. Finally, set a timer for five minutes each night to clean any mess!
I’m sad because I have to go to a summer camp. I just want to have a summer like my friends. Help me out! —Jessie

Computer scientist Mary has an idea for a new robot to help her work with children. How should it look? The robot should have arms to be able to lift things. And if it is going to communicate with people, it will also need a face. Scientists believe that giving a robot a face can make it seem more friendly. Humans would also like to pay more attention to robots with faces. But what kind?
For Mary, she wants to make sure that her new robot doesn’t look too much like a human. She wants people to just treat it as a machine-person. If it looks more like a human than a machine, she thinks users might find it a bit creepy and feel afraid. Mary also believes that robot faces don’t need to look a lot like ours. Her research shows that we can enjoy communicating with robots whether or not they look like humans, because our brains are able to look for faces. Just put two circles on top of a robot’s body, and we will see a face.
Dave feels differently. He believes that although at first we might be afraid when seeing a robot with a lifelike face, we may soon get used to it. If robots are going to work closely with humans, they should look as much like us as possible. After all, faces are an important part of the way we communicate.
To make his robots look as much like real people as possible, Dave invented a special skin (皮肤) for their faces. With this skin, robots can show human-like expressions and appear to be angry, sad, happy or surprised. Dave’s robots are also programmed to copy expressions. How? Just imagine his robot is looking at you. The cameras in its eyes send pictures of your face to its central computer!

Holly gets a pet dog. She’s so happy, and the dog is happy, too! “I want to call him Eco,” says Holly. “Come here, Eco!” And Eco wags (摇摆) his tail.
“That dog is your responsibility (责任), Holly,” says her father. “No problem!” Holly agrees.
Before school, Holly takes Eco for his first morning walk. She feels very tired. It’s really cold and dark—and it’s so early! But Eco doesn’t mind. He runs, stops, runs again, sees a black cat, tries to run after it and nearly pulls Holly off her feet!
Holly realizes it’s late when she gets back from the walk. She quickly eats a piece of bread, takes her bag and jacket, and runs to school.
What a busy morning! But that’s not all for looking after a pet dog.
When Holly takes Eco for his evening walk, it’s quite dark outside. Holly feels nervous. She runs along the road with him, but it’s difficult. Because Eco often stops to study the bushes and trees. And he often tries to catch birds, or play with sticks and fallen leaves.
A few days go by. Then...
It’s raining outside. Eco enters... and the trouble starts. Eco’s dirty paws leave prints everywhere, on the floor, on the blanket, on the sofa... “Come here, Eco!” says Holly. She wants to stop him, but it doesn’t work.
Holly gets really angry now. She decides to punish Eco. So that night Eco is kept in the green house alone.
When Holly enters the green house next morning, it’s a disaster. Her mum’s plants and flowers are lying on their sides or on the floor. And the pots (花盆) are broken into a hundred pieces. And Eco is sitting in the soil and leaves.
“Oh, no,” says Holly. She realizes it’s time to train the dog. “He needs to know the rules.”
Every day after school, Holly repeats simple orders to Eco. If he can do as ordered, he can get nice bones. The amazing thing is, Eco really enjoys it. For him, it’s one big game.
So Eco learns to sit when Holly says, “Sit!” He learns to come when Holly says, “Come here!”... And he doesn’t get into trouble!

It’s every student’s bad dream: exam time. During the last three days of the term, we had six exams.
My easiest exam was math. All of its questions were from earlier exams.
The biology exam was hard. At first, I thought I would fail it. It asked about lots of things we never studied in class, though we could use our textbooks. And there wasn’t enough time to check every question. I guessed at many of them. But my teacher said that I did well in it.
In the career planning and computer applications (职业规划与电脑应用) exam, we had a lot to do: a PowerPoint presentation, a book report and a class evaluation (评价). I felt like I needed more time, but some of my classmates didn’t think so. They just quickly wrote down some answers and then played games.
I don’t think I did very well in the English exam. We had to write an essay (passage) about books we have read in class. But I didn’t study hard enough.
At our school, we can “test out” of some classes. That means students can study by themselves and then take exams. If they pass, they don’t have to take that class. I tested out in both computer and health classes.
Studying for those exams was terrible. Those classes would go on for six months, but I had to teach myself everything in three weeks. Also, I had to do three big projects at the same time. I watched no TV for almost three weeks! I am so glad it is over, and now it’s the summer holiday.
For my classmates, it will be two and a half months for fun without school or homework. But I am a Chinese, and you know what Chinese parents do with their kids’ free time: more homework.
16. How did the writer pass the biology exam?
A. He was lucky enough to have guessed many of the questions right.
B. He had seen most of the questions before the exams.
C. He found most of the answers in the textbooks.
D. He spent most of his time studying this subject.
17. In the exam about future jobs and the use of computer, ________.
A. the writer didn’t finish one of the tasks
B. all the other classmates did better than him
C. some students didn’t take it seriously
D. one of the tasks was playing computer games
18. The reason the writer chose to test out of computer and health classes is that ________.
A. he did not want to spend too long a time on them
B. he didn’t think they are important for his future
C. his parents could help him with them at home
D. he was good at computer and in good health
19. The underlined phrase “go on for” in Paragraph 7 means “________”.
A. cost B. spend C. spend D. last
20. What is the main idea of the passage?
A. It’s not easy for students to study and take exams.
B. The only way to do well in exams is to study hard.
C. Good teachers are essential for students’ achievement at school.
D. To “test out” proved most effective to do well in a subject.

Sailing a boat is great exercise, which can be enjoyed with family or friends. Many people all over the world sail each year. With some lessons and practice, you could be one of them. Here’s how to get started.
● Understand the basics (基础知识).
When you’re starting out in sailing, learn the basics first. You should begin on a small boat made for kids. It works like any sailboat—with sails to catch the wind and push the boat forward. The sailor, the person working the boat, has to be able to move the sails, as well as use a rudder (舵) in order to direct the boat where they want it to go.
● Find sailing near you.
The most important lesson you can learn in sailing is how to do it safely, with the help of experienced sailing coaches. First, find sailing clubs and search for youth lessons near you. Then ask your parents to call them to find out what lessons or camps they have for kids in your age group.
● Prepare for your lesson.
As a beginner, your lesson will start on land. You’ll learn skills, like how to raise the sails by pulling on the lines. The lesson should also provide most of what you need to sail. It includes the boat and a life vest (救生衣). Ask what type of shoes you should wear, and dress in clothes that will dry easily.
● Stay safe.
Remember to always wear your life vest on or near water, even when you’re on the dock (码头). Don’t go near a boat or take one out unless your parents agree, and never sail or swim alone.

【答案】例文
Hi Mike. Everything goes well with me. And I’m glad to tell you something about my parents and me.
I love my parents. And as an old saying goes, “Like father, like son.” In some ways, I am the same as my parents. We all have straight black hair and big eyes. What’s more, we all love movie theaters which have the most comfortable seats. However, in some ways, we are quite different. I am more outgoing and I like making friends. But my parents are quieter and that’s why they enjoy doing some reading. I usually stay at home to surf the Internet when I am free. But my parents often go out to exercise. Maybe I should begin to exercise with my parents because it is good for my health.
Best wishes to you and look forward to your early reply.

A. People should treat robots as humans.
B. Robots need to express their own feelings.
C. Robots shouldn't look too much like humans.
D. People can accept robots with a human face with no fear.
10. What is the purpose of the passage?
A. To explain the reasons why robots should have faces.
B. To suggest what humans can do with robots with faces.
C. To share ideas on what kind of faces robots should have.

B He had seen most of the questions before the exams.
