However, to read them in full, you will need to subscribe. C 25. A 26. B 27. 根据第一段中“Frank Caprio is a well-known judge who has gained popularity for his caring and understanding approach in the courtroom. (Frank Caprio是一位著名的法官,他因在法庭上充满关怀和理解的态度而广受欢迎)”和第四段中“His trials prove that the law can be applied with understanding and mercy, which has made him a beloved figure both in the United States and around the world. (他的审判证明,法律可以在理解和仁慈的基础上得到执行,这使他成为美国和世界各地备受爱戴的人物)”可知,他的受欢迎源于他在审判中平衡了仁慈与正义。故选C项。 【25题详解】推理判断题。根据第三段中“The elderly man explained that he was driving his 63-year-old son, who has cancer, to a blood test. After hearing the man’s story, Caprio responded with sympathy, highlighting the man’s dedication to his family at an advanced age. (这位老人解释说,他当时正开车载着他63岁、患有癌症的儿子去做血液检查。听完老人的讲述后,Caprio表现出同情,并赞扬了老人在高龄时仍对家庭如此奉献的精神)”可知,Caprio没有机械地执行法律,而是根据老人的特殊情况表现出理解和同情。这反映了他对案件的个性化考量,他是灵活的。故选A项。 根据第五段中“After the case was dismissed, the driver shared that 20 years ago, as a lost teenager, Caprio had asked him about his future dreams during a trial, a question that marked a turning point in the driver’s life. His way of working as a judge shows that justice can be done with sympathy and that sometimes a kind word can change a person’s path for the better. (Caprio的故事不仅仅关于他作为法官的角色,还关于一个善意的举动如何影响一个人的一生。他作为法官的工作方式表明,正义可以在同情的基础上实现,有时一句温暖的话语就能改变一个人的命运,使其走向更好的方向)”可知,文章主要讲述了Caprio在法庭上如何通过同情和理解来执行法律,展现了他在审判中的人性化一面。因此,D项“法庭上法官的人性”契合文章主旨,适合作为文章标题。故选D项。 【答案】28. One Bangkok restaurant claims to have been cooking its beef noodle soup since the 1970s. It has been suggested that perpetual stew was a tradition in Medieval Europe, when the effort required to start a fire meant that they were left to burn all day, and a pot of stew was always boiling slowly on top of it. One New York Times article tells us about a stew in Normandy that was kept cooking for 300 years. 故选A项。 根据第三段中“Concerns have also been raised that some vegetables, such as potatoes, or those containing nitrates (硝酸盐), could become more poisonous the more they are reheated. 32. B 33. A 34. C 35. I took a bus to city hall, but I can’t find the place. W: This is the concert hall, not city hall. To go there, you should take the bus at Grand Hotel over there. Text 2 M: Can I help you? W: I’m looking for a size twelve dress. M: Oh, let me see. An eight, a ten. Ah, you’re lucky. I have the prettiest dress here in a twelve. Why don’t you try it on? Text 3 W: Do you think you can take care of everything in the office today? M: No problem. Just go home and take a rest. If there is anything I feel I cannot handle, I’ll call you. Text 4 W: We have a half-day tour, a full-day tour and an evening tour. Which one would you like? M: What is the schedule of the half-day tour? W: It sets out at 8:30 a.m. and returns at 2:00 p.m. Text 5 M: Now, what seems to be the trouble, Mrs Stevens? W: I’ve been very dizzy lately. And last night, I had some chest pain. M: Don’t worry. Let me have a look. Text 6 W: Wow. That was a great match. I really like watching tennis games. M: Me too. I think tennis is an exciting sport. W: I think so. Do you play tennis, John? M: Yes, but not very well. Do you play? W: A little. How about a game on Tuesday afternoon? M: Sure. Text 7 M: Mrs White, I’m afraid we have to put you on a strict diet. From now on, you’re going to have to stay away from salty food. W: Does that mean I can’t have any more fast food? M: Right. You can’t have any fried food or steaks. W: What about breakfast food like eggs and sausages? M: Those are all bad for you. But you can have porridge, bread and orange juice. W: Well, what about lunch and dinner? M: Have a salad for lunch. As for dinner, you can have all the vegetables you want. Fish and chicken are also okay. W: What about dessert? Can I still have ice cream? M: Yes, but not too much. Text 8 M: Hi, Nancy! You look worried. What’s wrong? W: Well Daniel, have you ever felt nervous on stage? M: Sure. Do you remember that play I was in a few years ago? I knew my lines, but I was terrified to have to recite them in front of an audience. As soon as I saw the crowd of people down there, my heart beat so fast that I was unable to say a single word. W: That’s how I feel just thinking about the spelling competition next week. M: I didn’t know you made it to the finals. W: I’m worried I’ll get nervous and freeze on stage. I might forget how to spell everything, even my own name. I don’t know what to do. M: Nancy, I know that you’re not going to forget how to spell your name. I’ll help you get through this. I’ll go to the school hall with you to practice. Then I’ll teach you an exercise my baseball coach taught me. Believe me. It works. W: I feel much better now. Thanks, Daniel. Text 9 W: Hello, ladies and gentlemen! Today, we have invited Prof. Stone to talk about the role of elderly people in our society. Welcome to our show, Prof. Stone. M: To begin with, I’d like to tell a story from my own life. Several years ago, when my grandparents were well into their 80s, they were no longer able to care for themselves very well. My grandfather was afraid of leaving the only home they had known for the past 60 years. The idea of having to sell their home and move into a retirement home was an extremely painful experience for them. Indeed, old age for them, and many old Americans can mean not only the possible failure of one’s health, but the loss of identity and self-worth. W: Yes, it’s true. What do you have to say about the problem of old age? M: Many experts have given talks here that have focused on the medical care, and the development of public services for senior citizens. Today, I’d like to focus my comments on the meaningful roles that elderly can play and should play in our society. Text 10      Talking about personal relationships, well, I’d naturally think of my relationship with my mother. Whenever I need help, my mother is always there for me. She often tells me that I can be anyone I want, as long as I’m confident of myself. She sees my talent and pushes me to do the best I possibly can. As I was growing up, we were often on the move. I had to admit that moving so often made me feel lonely. But my mother did everything she could to help me feel happy. In fact, so much traveling was really a good thing because it made us close. I respect my mother so much as she never treats me as a child, but as an equal. She gives me the freedom to make mistakes and to learn from them all. Unlike friendships that can fade or break, I know I’ll always be connected to my mother no matter what I face. She is not just a role model, but someone I love. 1.What is the man doing? His trials have been turned into a television program called"Caught in Providence",which airs on local Fox stations and presents his work. Caprio's decisions often reflect a mixture of legal strictness and human warmth. He is known for his merciful judgments and his ability to connect with the people before him.For instance,in one case, a 96-year-old man was brought before Caprio for speeding in a school zone. The elderly man explained that he was driving his 63-year-old son,who has cancer,to a blood test. After hearing the man's story,Caprio responded with sympathy, highlighting the man's dedication to his family at an advanced age. Perpetual stew is a dish that is never taken off the heat;it's never finished. As portions 第3页(共8项)英语试题 arc served, new ingredicnts are added to the pot to replace them.Onc day's stew becomes the basis of the following days'mcals.Therc have been some famous examples. This year,Annie Rauwerda's 60-day stew bccame a social media sensation. One Bangkok restaurant claims to have been cooking its beef noodle soup since the 1970s.It has been suggested that perpetual stew was a tradition in Medieval Europe, when the effort required to start a fire meant that they were left to burn all day,and a pot of stew was always boiling slowly on top of it.One New York Times article tells us about a stew in Normandy that was kept cooking for 300 years. This tradition may date back to the Middle Ages, but thankfully, our understanding of food safety has developed since then.In a world where food is often thrown away once it reaches its use-by date, many people have asked how safe perpetual stew can actually be.Experts are divided. Some maintain that as long as the stew is kept bubbling away at a temperature too high for bacteria to survive,it should be safe.Others suggest that meat can become dangerous if it's left in the stew for too long. Concerns have also been raised that some vegetables, such as potatoes,or those containing nitrates( 酸盐),could become more poisonous the more they are reheated. D Imagine a way to produce meat without killing animals.Instead of raising livestock on farms, Uma Valeti,a cardiologist, and co-founder of Upside Foods, dreamed of a way to "grow"meat by cultivating(培养)animal cells(细胞). The idea for what's now called "cultivated"meat came to Valeti when he was working with heart attack patients at the Mayo Clinic more than 15 years ago, growing human heart cells in a lab.It should be possible to grow meat with similar science,he realized.Scientists could take cells from an animal by a needle biopsy(切片检查),place them in tanks, feed them the nutrients they need to reproduce, including fats, sugar, amino acids and vitamins, and end up with meat. It has taken years of experimentation by a crew of biologists, biochemists and engineers to turn that idea into a product ready to eat.Now the company is awaiting a greenlight from the Food and Drug Administration(FDA)to begin selling its first cultivated meat products, including a chicken fillet(without bone). After four years of talks with regulators at the FDA,Valeti expects this could happen"in the very near future".When it does,Upside's production facility in Emeryville,California, will be able to produce over 50,000 pounds of cultivated meat products per year. For Valeti, the potential benefits of cultivated meat are too important not to try to overcome the current obstacles. He sees a future with a better choice to the current system of producing meat, and he's determined to create it.Valeti says,at last,as a doctor he might have been able to help a few thousand patients during his career. But,by taking the great step to cultivated meat, with its potential promise to surpass meat production,he believes he can have a larger impact."This could literally 第4页(共8页)英语试题 affect billions of human lives and save potentially trillions of animal lives,Valeti says. 32.What made Valeti come to the idea of making cultivated meat?
