Fruit and Your Dog’s Health
Summer is coming. Your dogs are welcoming all kinds of fruits, aren’t they? Better not. Some fruits are beneficial to dogs, while others can pose significant risks. It is crucial for you to distinguish between fruits that are safe and those that are not.
Fruits That Are Bad for Dogs
Avocados are particularly dangerous for dogs. The pit, skin, and leaves contain a substance known as persin, which is toxic (有毒的) to dogs. Although the flesh contains a lower concentration of persin, it is still not advisable to feed it to dogs. Citrus fruits, such as lemons and grapefruits, are not poisonous, but their high acidity can lead to digestive discomfort in dogs. Grapes, on the other hand, are extremely harmful and can result in kidney failure in dogs. Similarly, cherries pose a threat due to their pits and stems, which can cause intestinal (肠) blockages and are also poisonous.
Healthiest Fruits for Dogs
Certain fruits are considered healthy for dogs because they are rich in nutrients and low in sugar. Blueberries, for instance, are an excellent choice as they are packed with fiber and vitamins, which is beneficial for dogs. Watermelon is another favorable option. With its high water content, it serves as a refreshing treat, especially during the summer months. It is also rich in vitamins A, C, and B-6. However, it is essential to remove the seeds before feeding it to your dog to prevent choking.
How Much Fruit Can a Dog Have?
Even if a fruit is safe, it should be given to dogs in small amounts. Experts recommend following the 90-10 rule: 90% of a dog’s diet should consist of its regular food, while the remaining 10% can be healthy treats, including fruits and vegetables. If your dog has health issues or is on a special diet, it is advisable to consult a vet before introducing any fruit into its diet. Some dogs may experience symptoms such as an upset stomach, loss of appetite or vomiting after consuming fruit. Should you notice any of these symptoms, it is crucial to discontinue feeding the fruit and contact your vet immediately.
21. Which is true about avocados?
A. Their pits and stems are the most poisonous parts.
B. The skin and leaves are relatively safe for dogs to eat.
C. The persin in them can cause an upset stomach in dogs.
D. The toxicity of persin decreases from the pit to the flesh.
22. Why are blueberries and watermelon beneficial to dogs?
A. Because their seeds contain sufficient nutrients.
B. Because they make dogs less tired when it’s hot.
C. Because they are nutritious and rich in vitamins.
D. Because they are a good source of fiber and sugar.
23. What can be learned about the 90-10 rule?
A. It focuses on reasonable feeding fruit to dogs.
B. It emphasizes the role of fruit in a dog’s diet.
C. It applies to dogs with health problems or on diet.
D. It must be strictly followed without any exception.

Rachel Wylde, 51, cares for her dad, Derek, and at times feels guilty going out for a run. “He used to read, draw and write a lot, but now he can’t do any of those things. So, to go out and do something for myself can feel wrong at times. However, running is something I need to do. It’s great for my mental health and well-being — even on a really bad day, a run can make me feel better”, said Rachel.
Sometimes, when I feel too tired to do anything, it can seem like hard work to get out for a run, but I come back feeling energized. Finding time to run as a carer is difficult, though. When Dad first became ill, he was psychotic and suicidal and couldn’t be left alone, for his own safety. My running stopped, and it was only when Dad was hospitalized that I was able to get out again.
Thankfully, his psychosis has gone and he is mentally well, but he is now physically disabled and has lost all independence. He has carers during the day, which is a huge help, but I still do most things for him. I have to fit my life around his, which means some sacrifices when it comes to running. My long runs are done early in the morning, and shorter runs between visits. If I want to do a race on a weekend, I have to make sure family are around to be there for him.
As a carer, pretty much everything falls on me and I feel responsible for someone else’s life. This can feel like a huge weight on my shoulders— particularly when medical issues arise, as they frequently do. I have all that stress that no one else goes through, in addition to the day-to-day things.
On top of this, I feel responsible for making sure my dad is happy, because I don’t want his psychosis to return. But as hard as it gets sometimes, I feel lucky and privileged to be able to spend so much time with him. Not many people get the opportunity to do that.
24. What can running give to Rachel as a carer?
A. A way to escape her duties. B. A tool to maintain her mental health.
C. A means of connecting with other carers. D. A method of inspiring her dad to recover.
25. Why did Rachel stop her running routine initially?
A. Her dad required constant attention.
B. She became too tired from caregiving.
C. She lacked motivation to continue running regularly.
D. She felt extremely guilty to leave home to run alone.
26. What sacrifices does Rachel make for running?
A. Her own physical health. B. Sleep and flexibility in her schedule.
C. Less time with family on weekends. D. Reduced responsibilities to care for her dad.
27. How does Rachel feel about being a carer?
A. It is an extremely straightforward task.
B. It is an optional role she can easily abandon.
C. It is a responsibility that brings her only stress.
D. It is a challenging experience but with rewards.

Have you ever interrupted an important occasion to send a text? Does the mere thought of being cut off from all technology make you panic? Is your ideal six-month break an extended period playing a video game in a windowless bedroom? If so, visit Capio Nightingale Hospital, a technology-addiction centre.
“If teenagers spend a lot of time on their own, they run the risk of being developmentally out of step with others of their age group,” says Capio Nightingale’s senior specialist Dr Richard Graham. “It’s a very young field of research, but there’s some evidence to suggest that teenagers who spend too much time on Facebook miss out on key developmental steps. They could feel immature. Extreme cases can end up putting people’s education and employment at risk. Then there are the physical aspects. They can have a poor diet, lose weight, or not take care of themselves properly.”
Teenagers, necessarily, are a high-risk group, as are those who have had a separation or who have been laid off. But no one is free from its impact. Technology experts tell the story of the young Texan boy who developed repetitive strain disorder from testing, or the couple who were building a “virtual baby” on the Internet but forgot to look after their real-life child. Scientists believe that handling phone calls, email and other incoming messages all at the same time can change how we think or behave.
“At the moment researchers are trying to study the effects of high use of technology during the early parts of people’s lives,” continues Graham. “There are some key points when permanent connections are made inside the brain. For example, if you have a minor eyesight problem and it is not remedied in the first five years of your life, part of the area of your brain responsible for processing visual information switches off. It’s a “use it or lose it” principle and it might be relevant to teenage technology addiction.”
28. What does Graham think of technology addiction?
A. It has long been studied by researchers.
B. It may result in teenagers’ extreme views.
C. It affects teenagers mentally and physically.
D. It slows the physical development of teenagers.
29. Why does the author mention the Texan boy and the couple in paragraph 3?
A. To clarify a statement. B. To explain a rule.
C. To introduce a new topic. D. To make a prediction.
30. What does the underlined word “remedied” in the last paragraph mean?
A Ignored. B. Detected. C. Worsened. D. Treated.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Technology: a new burden for people
B. The rise of technology-addiction centers
C. Technology addiction: a problem worth noticing
D. How to overcome negative effects of technology
D
On a clear day, the tiny village of La Vega offers great views of the Atlantic Coast. But this afternoon, the thick fog hanging over Jonay González Pérez and Sara Rodriguez Dorta’s farmland sets a special scene.
“There’s almost enough fog to get you to start collecting it,” says Mr. González Pérez, walking through his farmland. “But we need to wait a little longer, until the fog is at the same level as the catcher.” On a good day, the couple’s fog-collecting system can harvest 475 gallons of water. The fog droplets fall from the nets and flow through 220 yards of black pipes, which snake down into a 95,000-gallon storage tank that looks like a giant waterbed. Since 2018, Mr. González Pérez and his wife have relied entirely on fog collecting to water their 3.7 acres of farmland when rain is in short supply in the summer months.
Their system — which the couple built with their own hands over the course of a year — was entirely paid by the government, after they won a local award for the best initiative in rural farming. But this isn’t just a pet project for farmers. In 2020, the European Commission partnered with the local government to fund the Life Nieblas fog-collecting project, which aims to reforest areas destroyed by drought or forest fire. Besides, harvested fog water meets the World Health Organization’s standards on drinking water safety.
As the Canary Islands and regions around the world look to address the effects of climate change, fog collecting is becoming an increasingly practical technology for communities facing water supply challenges.
“Fundamentally we depend on our groundwater in the Canary Islands and water is always short,” says Maria Jaén, a climate scientist. “Fog water alone can’t make up for this, but it can be useful for reforestation purposes, like in the case of forest fires. But for rural zones, where water consumption is much lower, fog collecting is more than just helpful. It can be the solution to water problems.”
32. Which statement is true about the system used by Mr. González Pérez and his wife?
A. It is a set of underground waterbeds.
B. It transforms raindrops into drinking water.
C. It employs advanced technology to create fog.
D. It meets the farmland’s watering needs in dry months.
33. Which of the following words can best describe the system?
A. Costly and traditional. B. Green and innovative.
C. Risky and inefficient. D. Effortless and immature.
34. What can be inferred from paragraph 3?
A. A fog-collecting system is easy to build.
B. The technology has been widely known.
C. The government encourages such projects.
D. Farmers have to rely on themselves entirely.
35. How does fog water benefit the Canary Islands according to Jaén?
A. It generates enough water to replace groundwater.
B. It solves water consumption problems in rural areas.
C. It can produce much energy for remote communities.
D. It decreases the frequent occurrence of severe forest fires.

Professor Smith came from America to Nigari and he liked to see and understand the people there. One day, Smith stood by the window, looking at the crowd in the street below and saw a boy, a street sweeper, doing his job. Smith was, somehow, attracted by him. The boy, around 13, was in neat uniform and swept the street with great care. The broom was in his hands; if not, Smith would think that he was one of his students.
“Why is he here sweeping the street?” The question pushed him to approach the boy and say, “May I know your name?” Seeing Smith standing before him, the boy wore a little confusion in his eyes and replied slowly, “Sir! Rex.” Rex had orderly black and well-combed hair and looked smart, friendly and intelligent. William saw a bright future for Rex ahead. He politely asked something about Rex’ s family, then he knew that Rex’ s father, and grandfather, were both sweepers. “Sir, this is the bread and butter giver for my family,” Rex said, neither embarrassed nor shamed by the question.
Knowing the roots of education may be bitter, but the fruits it gives are very sweet, Smith tried to persuade Rex to receive more education. However, Rex politely refused, “I cannot leave this work. This is the means of living for us.”
“I know. But your life should be more than this. What if there is an opportunity right now that might change your life?” he asked, looking into Rex’ s eyes sharply. “What if today is that opportunity?”
“I would certainly try my best for it and do whatever I can to make myself a better person,” Rex replied, slowly but firmly, with a sparkle in his eyes.
Smith was satisfied with what Rex said. He decided to go on his mission to help this young boy start a new journey. He first talked to Rex’s family, stressing the importance of education and the potential it held for Rex’ s future. Then he arranged to help Rex with some courses after Rex finished his sweeping duties each day.

1.续写词数应为150左右;

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Fruit and Your Dog’s Health
【答案】21. D 22. C 23. A

【答案】24. B 25. A 26. B 27. D

A. Ignored. B. Detected. C. Worsened. D. Treated.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Technology: a new burden for people
B. The rise of technology-addiction centers
C. Technology addiction: a problem worth noticing
D. How to overcome negative effects of technology
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. D 31. C

【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Teenagers, necessarily, are a high-risk group, as are those who have had a separation or who have been laid off. But no one is free from its impact. Technology experts tell the story of the young Texan boy who developed repetitive strain disorder from testing, or the couple who were building a “virtual baby” on the Internet but forgot to look after their real-life child.(青少年必然是一个高风险群体,就像那些已经分居或被解雇的人一样。但没有人能不受其影响。科技专家讲述了这样的故事:德克萨斯州的一个小男孩因为测试而患上了重复性劳损症,或者一对夫妇在网上造了一个“虚拟婴儿”,却忘了照顾他们现实生活中的孩子)”可推知,文章提到德克萨斯男孩因测试游戏患上重复性劳损症,以及夫妇沉迷虚拟婴儿而忽视现实孩子,是为了例证前文观点“no one is free from its impact(无人能免受科技影)”。故选A。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题,根据划线词所在句“if you have a minor eyesight problem and it is not remedied in the first five years of your life, part of the area of your brain responsible for processing visual information switches off(如果你有一个轻微的视力问题,并且在你生命的前五年内没有得到remedied,你大脑中负责处理视觉信息的部分区域就会关闭)”可知,如果有轻微的视力问题,且在生命的前五年没有得到“治疗”,大脑中负责处理视觉信息的部分区域就会关闭,所以“remedied”意为“治疗”,与“treated”意思相近,故选D。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段““If teenagers spend a lot of time on their own, they run the risk of being developmentally out of step with others of their age group,” says Capio Nightingale’s senior specialist Dr Richard Graham. “It’s a very young field of research, but there’s some evidence to suggest that teenagers who spend too much time on Facebook miss out on key developmental steps.
“Fundamentally, we depend on our groundwater in the Canary Islands and water is always short,” says Maria Jaén, a climate scientist.
【答案】32. D 33. B 34. C 35. B

【答案】Smith gave Rex all the necessary support and guidance he needed to pursue his studies. Fortunately, some of Rex’s previous school years laid the foundation for his current efforts. Smith then enrolled Rex in a school. With Smith’s encouragement and financial assistance, slowly but surely, Rex’s initial hesitation gave way to a burning ambition to learn and improve his conditions. As Rex immersed himself in his studies, Smith watched with pride as the boy’s confidence grew. “It’s time to see how Rex has progressed these days,” Smith thought. Then he arranged for Rex to take an exam with his students.
The explosive news that Rex won third place in the exam excited Smith. When the results were announced, and Rex’s name appeared at the top of the list. Smith could scarcely contain his joy. He had witnessed the transformation of a street sweeper into a brilliant student. Smith rushed to congratulate Rex, embracing the young man with a sense of pride and accomplishment. He knew that this was just the beginning of Rex’s journey and from now on, even without his help, this young boy could find his own way and go ahead firmly.

This show is a key event at the rosebery malls winter fundraiser. Eighty percent of the money from the event will be donated to power first, a local charity committed to working with disadvantaged children. As IT is already mid december, we need to start making preparations for the collection that we intend to present at the show. Let's work together in making this fashion show a fantastic success. Following this meeting, i'd like each of you to recommend your top two favorite pieces of clothing from our recently launched november line. I will then carefully look over your choices this afternoon and decide if any changes should be made for the show. Thanks for your hard work.
