For a teenager whose chances of survival were slim when he was born, just making it to the starting line at the Olympics is an unbelievable achievement in itself.
William Flaherty was born in Cincinnati. When he was 3, he was diagnosed (诊断) with HLH. It is a serious disease where the immune system attacks the body’s organs. There were days when they didn’t know if he would live through. The 17-year-old Flaherty has had more than 30 operations in his life, including a bone-marrow transplant (骨髓移植) from his older brother Charles in 2008.
At five, William skied for the first time. It helped a lot with low bone density (密度) and got him back in good shape. One year later, William moved to Puerto Rico and fell in love with the island. Puerto Rico doesn’t have snow and balancing the island and skiing life was tough. During the first few years a lot of it was pushed by his father and older brother Charles — himself a former Olympic skier. Motivated by his older brother, William wanted to give it a try himself. When he brought up to represent Puerto Rico in Alpine skiing, his friends laughed. However, he didn’t let it hold him back.
As a teenager, Flaherty had to balance his training with medical appointments and going to school. Even a cold could lay him up for two weeks, so William took extra pre-cautions over the last two years. While training, he wore an N95 mask the whole time and couldn’t ride the lift with anyone. After training, he came home directly, hid in his bedroom and stayed away from people. He managed to maintain straight A’s despite having to study on chairlifts and do final exams sometimes only days before racing. He had his English final three days before he left for Beijing.
“All my medical problems have definitely helped with my motivation. Skiing is really helpful because it forces me to focus on one thing. I really want to prove to all the other transplant survivors that you can do whatever you want in life. Move on with your life and achieve whatever you want,” he said.
1. Why did William Flaherty start skiing at the age of five?
A. To entertain himself. B. To participate in the Olympics.
C. To improve his health. D. To follow in his father’s footsteps.

A. His studies gave way to his training for skiing.
B. He was offered better training conditions in Puerto Rico.
C. He was inspired by his older brother Charles in skiing.
D. He started to learn skiing when he moved to Puerto Rico.
3. Which of the following can best describe William Flaherty?
A. Brave and kind. B. Creative and generous.
C. Considerate and shy. D. Optimistic and hardworking.
4. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Skiing Life of a Teenager. B. Preparing Well for the Olympics.
C. Surviving from Severe Illness. D. Defeating Disease to Deliver Hope.

We have to make certain our limited money is well spent. But what should we spend our money on? A 20-year study conducted by Dr. Gilovich, a professor at Cormell University, reached a powerful and straightforward conclusion: don’t spend your money on things.
The trouble with things is that the happiness they provide peters out. We get used to new possessions (所有物), and what once seemed exciting quickly becomes the common. We keep raising the bar and always look for an even better one. Possessions, by their nature, cause comparisons. We buy a new car and are thrilled with it until a friend buys a better one — and there’s always someone with a better one. Most of us usually assume that the happiness we get from buying something will last as long as the thing itself. It seems that spending money on something we can see, hear, and touch on a permanent (永久的) basis delivers the best value. But it’s not the case at all.
Gilovich has found that experiences deliver more-lasting happiness than things. Experiences become a part of our identity. Everyone’s experience is unique. We are not our possessions, but we are the accumulation (积累, 积累物) of everything we’ve seen, the things we’ve done, and the places we’ve been to. “Our experiences are a bigger part of ourselves than our material goods,” said Gilovich. “You can really like your material stuff. You can even think that part of your identity is connected to those things, but they remain separate from you. In contrast, your experiences really are part of you. We are the sum total of our experiences.”
Besides, we don’t compare experiences in the same way that we compare things. It’s hard to quantify (量化) the relative value of any two experiences, which makes them much more enjoyable. And expectation of an experience causes excitement and enjoyment, while expectation of obtaining a possession causes impatience. Experiences are enjoyable from the very first moments of planning, all the way through to the memories you keep forever. The temporary happiness achieved by buying things can be regarded as “puddles of pleasure.” In other words, that kind of happiness evaporates (蒸发) quickly and leaves us wanting more. Things may last longer than experiences, but the memories that remain are what matter most.
5. The underlined phrase “peters out” in Paragraph 2 can be replaced by .
A. takes away B. dies away C. is not real D. costs too much
6. What does Gilovich think of experiences?
A. Experiences can exist in our memory forever.
B. Our experiences take up all parts of ourselves.
C. Our experiences are what set us apart from others.
D. Experiences deliver less-lasting happiness than things.
7. What can be inferred from the passage?
A. Spiritual wealth is the most valuable for us.
B. Experiences can be compared with each other.
C. Expecting an experience increases our feeling of anxiety.
D. Expectation of obtaining a possession causes excitement and enjoyment.
8. Which is the main idea of the passage?
A. How can we make happiness last long?
B. How can we gain happiness with money?
C. Why do experiences achieve permanent happiness?
D. Why should we spend money on experiences instead of things?
D
We eat plants and juice them, and now it seems we can mine (采矿) them too!
After a successful experiment on the island of Borneo, the botany professor Alan Baker and a group of researchers want to introduce phytomining (harvesting minerals from plants) as a better and partial substitute (代替物) for traditional mining.
Phytomining means collecting metals from live plants. However, this can only be done with a group of plants known as “hyperaccumulators (超富集植物)”. There are around 700 identified types worldwide, and what makes these hyperaccumulators special is that they naturally attract and absorb minerals through their roots — metals poisonous to other plants — and then store these minerals in their bodies. The metals can then be extracted (提取, 提炼) from the plants’ sap (汁液), oil, or sometimes even live tissue.
Baker and his colleagues see a lot of potential in phytomining. Not only can it help meet the growing global demand for metals, but it is a way of reducing some of the damage to the environment caused by traditional mining.
One of the biggest problems with traditional mining is that it pollutes the surrounding area. Phytomining can extract metal waste, plus planting the hyperaccumulators would regrow the deforested areas caused by mining operations. Aside from this, if phytomining is able to replace part of traditional mining, then there will be fewer examples of bad mining practices like abandoned mines, which pollute the nearby waters. Also, since phytomining provides metals that are already naturally pure, there is no need to use huge amounts of energy to purify them.
But phytomining has its drawbacks. Harvesting plants on a large scale is expensive today, compared to traditional mining. Besides, plants can be wiped out by diseases or unexpected weather conditions.
However, there are many reasons to consider phytomining. After all, we need to make sure that our planet can exist persistently and sustainable practices like phytomining give us the hope that our advancement doesn’t mean sacrificing (牺牲) Mother Earth.
9. What makes hyperaccumulators different from other plants?
A. The ability to process poisonous metals. B. The ability to deal with water pollution.
C. The ability to take in and store minerals. D. The ability to resist various diseases.
10. What is the advantage of phytomining?
A. It can stop deforestation. B. It uses clean energy to purify metals.
C. It may reduce the deserted mines. D. It can’t be affected by weather conditions.
11. What is the author’s attitude toward phytomining?
A. Negative. B. Supportive. C. Indifferent. D. Doubtful.
12. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Metals From Plants. B. Benefits of Phytomining.
C. The Future of Phytomining. D. What Are Hyperaccumulators?

FOMO stands for “fear of missing out”. It refers to the nervous or anxious feeling people get when they realize they are not attending a social event either because they weren’t invited or they just didn’t feel like going. ____13____ This belief, in turn, can create anxiety and a sense of inferiority (自卑). FOMO bothers most teens, especially if they’ re often online.
One way for teens to deal with FOMO is to practice what is known as reframing (重塑) thinking. ____14____ Here are some tips on how teens can start to reframe their thinking.
Track negative thoughts and replace them with reasonable ones. One thing teens can do to deal with FOMO is to track their negative thoughts and feelings in a journal. ____15____ Then, they can change their thoughts and replace the negative thoughts with something positive.
____16____ Encourage teens to recognize that they have limited time and cannot possibly be everywhere and do everything. So, naturally, there will be social events that they cannot attend. But this does not mean that they’ re necessarily missing out on something.
Turn off the technology and do something else. Turning off the technology seems like a natural cure for FOMO. But just switching the phone off doesn’t erase the feelings that FOMO causes. ____17____ The key is to do something else entirely like reading a book or baking cookies — anything that allows them to focus on something other than social media.
A. Be realistic about availability.
B. There are some negative consequences of FOMO.
C. Realize that no one lives a perfect life as described in social media.
D. It’s a mental exercise designed to help them look at situations differently.
E. In general, FOMO causes people to assume that they have a low social rank.
F. Teens may still worry about missing out even if they’ re not in social media at all.
G. This allows them to observe how often they’ re feeling negative about themselves.

C
【答案】5. B 6. C 7. A 8. D

【导语】本文是一篇议论文。文章探讨钱该花在何处,通过对比指出相比物质,花在经历上能带来更持久快乐,阐释其背后原因 。
【5题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段“The trouble with things is that the happiness they provide peters out. We get used to new possessions (所有物), and what once seemed exciting quickly becomes the common.(物质东西的问题在于它们所带来的快乐会peters out。我们习惯了新的所有物,曾经看似令人兴奋的东西很快就变得平常了)”中,从“我们习惯了新东西,曾经令人兴奋的变得平常”可以推断出,快乐会逐渐减少直至消失,所以peters out表示“逐渐消失”的意思,与B选项dies away意思一致。故选B项。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段“Experiences become a part of our identity. Everyone’s experience is unique. We are not our possessions, but we are the accumulation (积累,积累物) of everything we’ve seen, the things we’ve done, and the places we’ve been to. ‘Our experiences are a bigger part of ourselves than our material goods,’ said Gilovich. ‘You can really like your material stuff. You can even think that part of your identity is connected to those things, but they remain separate from you. In contrast, your experiences really are part of you. We are the sum total of our experiences.’(经历成为了我们身份的一部分。
根据第三段“Experiences become a part of our identity. Everyone’s experience is unique. We are not our possessions, but we are the accumulation (积累,积累物) of everything we’ve seen, the things we’ve done, and the places we’ve been to.(经历成为了我们身份的一部分。每个人的经历都是独特的。我们不是我们的所有物,而是我们所见过的一切、我们所做过的事情以及我们去过的地方的积累)”以及第四段“Things may last longer than experiences, but the memories that remain are what matter most.(物质东西可能比经历持续的时间更长,但留下的记忆才是最重要的)”可以推断出,经历带来的记忆等精神层面的东西对我们来说是最有价值的,即精神财富对我们来说是最有价值的。故选A项。
【8题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文可知,文章开篇提出问题“We have to make certain our limited money is well spent. But what should we spend our money on?(我们必须确保我们有限的钱花得值。但我们应该把钱花在什么上面呢?)”,接着通过研究表明“The trouble with things is that the happiness they provide peters out.(物质东西的问题在于它们所带来的快乐会逐渐消失)”,而“Gilovich has found that experiences deliver more-lasting happiness than things.(吉洛维奇发现经历比物质东西能带来更持久的快乐)”,并从多个方面阐述了为什么经历比物质东西更值得花钱去获取。所以D选项Why should we spend money on experiences instead of things?(为什么我们应该把钱花在经历上而不是物质东西上?)准确地概括了文章的主要内容。故选D项。
