Why Should We Learn Body Language?
In English classes, we spend a large amount of time studying grammar and learning new words. 6 Few of us, however, pay enough attention to body language. So body language is not important, is it?
The answer is, “Yes”! As the old saying goes, “Actions speak louder than words.” 7 For example, shrug our shoulders, and, without a word, we’ve just said, “I don’t know.”
Body language can help us stress what we are saying. It can help us express our true and inner feelings. Moreover, body language can help us find out if someone is lying. Often, people who are lying do not make eye contact. 8 Because they are uncomfortable with the conversation.
In job interviews, the interviewers can sometimes judge the interviewee before he or she speaks. 9 It can show if you really care about your friends. Leaning forward into the conversation, for example, means you are interested in what is being said. Listening without making eye contact means you are not paying attention but are waiting for your turn to speak.
Scientists have been studying body language for a long time. They say more than 70 percent of our messages are delivered through body language. Sometimes, body language is more accurate (精准的) than the words we use.
So it is very important for us to learn body language. 10 We will find it easier to get a job. We will also have lasting friendships.
A.We are less likely to be misunderstood by understanding body language.
B.They may turn away or raise their shoulders.
C.We work hard to improve our reading and listening skills.
D.Sometimes we can communicate things even without a single word.
E.Body language is also important in our personal lives.

We can see circles, squares and triangles (三角形) everywhere in our daily life. 1 Much like colors, different shapes can tell us something about the characters.
The round shape often brings us the idea of things in nature, like the Sun, flowers, raindrops and so on. 2 All these things make us feel happy and warm. This is why so many cartoon characters bodies — heroes, kids, good people — are round in shape, because circles mean goodness, happiness and friendliness.
Squares show something man-made or old-fashioned. In the cartoon called Up (飞屋环游记), Carl, an elderly man, has a square face and wears square glasses, while Russell, an 8-year-old boy with a round face, always wears round medals. 3 Carl is stubborn (执拗的) and lonely while Russell is cute and full of energy.
The angriest shape is the triangle. Look at the bad guys in cartoons. 4 Because triangles don’t easily fall down, characters designed in this way are usually difficult to deal with.
5 So, next time you see a film, pay attention to the shapes and you will know what the characters are like.
A.These shapes show differences between the characters.
B.But have you thought about their meanings in cartoons?
C.They are all drawn with plenty of points, like Shen Gongbao in Ne Zha.
D.We can also connect circles with beautiful eyes and babies’ round faces.
E.In fact, in other kinds of films, different shapes are used for the same purpose.

You’ve been learning words since you were a tiny baby. At first, you learned them only by hearing other people talk. Now that you’re a reader, you have another way to learn words. What should you do when you come to a word and you think you don’t know what it means? 1
Say it
First, sound it out. Then say it to yourself. 2
Sometimes you know a word in your head but you don’t know what it looks like in print. So if you match up what you know and what you read—you have the word!
Use context
If this doesn’t work, take the next step: look at the context—the other words and sentences around it. Read this sentence: When it rained, the dog looked for shelter in the doorway. 3
Rain and in the doorway might give you helpful information.
4
If the context doesn’t help, look at the parts of the word. Does it have any parts you know? These can help you understand what it means. If you don’t know the meaning of miner, try looking at parts of the word. For example, -er at the end of a word means “a person who does something”. So a miner might be someone who works in a mine.
Look it up
If the three steps above don’t work, you can look it up. 5 —either a book or online. Nobody knows the meaning of every word, but good readers know how to understand words they don’t know.
A.Use word parts.
B.Throw away the words.
C.It might sound like a word you know.
D.You can find the word in a dictionary.
E.Following some easy steps can help you.
F.If the word shelter doesn’t look familiar, look at the words around it.

Know more about your friends
In order to find possible friends, try to know more about them. What do they like doing? Join one of their activities. What subject (话题) are they interested in? 3 In this way, you can know each other much better.
Work as volunteers
Volunteering is good for both body and mind. It gives you the chance to communicate with people. Helping at the local food store or in a charity (慈善) shop will give you a warm feeling and you’ll get to know other volunteers. 4

Experts agree that spending time in front of a computer may cause eye strain. Eye strain typically isn’t harmful. 1 . Fortunately, it’s fairly easy to protect your eyes, so computer use is less likely to bother them. Here are some useful tips:
1.Sit far enough away from the screen.
This is usually considered at least an arm’s length away from the screen. 2 . If you can properly high-five your computer screen with a full arm extension, you’re sitting too close.
2. 3
Ideally, you should look down at the computer screen at about a 15 to 20 degree angle. This ensures that more of your eyeball is covered by your eyelid, keeping your eyes moisturized and healthy.
3.Blink often.
We naturally blink about 20 times every minute, but when focusing on a screen this can drop by as much as half. This means your eyes are at much greater risk of drying out when working on the computer 4 .
4.Take regular breaks.
5 . The American Optometric Association recommends that for every two hours of looking at the computer screen, you should take a 15 minute break. During this time you should blink, close your eyes, and allow them to rest. This isn’t only good advice to protect your eyes, but your health in general.
A.To make sure your computer is positioned right, try the high-five test.
B.Sitting for long periods of time can be bad for your back, joints and weight.
C.But it can cause symptoms(症状) like dry, watery eyes, light headache, and neck or shoulder pain.

Scientists have studied how apes (猿) use gestures. But until recently, no research had been carried out on humans’ ability to understand ape’s gestures. Researchers Kirsty and Catherine at the University of St. Andrews decided to work on it. 1
They created a game for people to play online. The game was simple. 2 Then they had to choose the correct meaning of the gesture out of four possible answers. For the videos, the researchers chose 10 of the most common gestures used by apes.
Thousands of people played the game. The researchers were surprised to find that people were able to choose the correct meaning of the gestures over 50% of the time. 3 For some of the gestures, people were able to choose the correct meaning about 80% of the time. One example of this was the gesture of wiping the mouth, which people correctly guessed “give me that food”.
The scientists believe that humans may have a natural ability to understand the gestures of apes. But it’s not clear why.
4 So one possibility is that the body language of these gestures has been passed down from this shared ancestor (祖传).
The researchers say that they need to study how humans are able to understand the gestures of apes. 5
A.People watched short videos of apes making a gesture.
B.They wanted to see if humans could understand the gestures of apes.
C.Humans and other apes all developed from an earlier kind of ape that lived long ago.
D.They’re also curious about how humans understand other animals, like dogs.
E.That’s twice as much as people would be expected to do.
F.The final result is surprising, since most people haven’t spent much time at all with apes.

Passage 2
(23-24八下·广东省广州市黄埔区广州大学附属中学·期中)

A survey shows that the number of lonely adults is increasing. According to recent research, loneliness can have harmful effects on health. So if you feel lonely at times, be sure to care about it. Here are some tips for you to avoid being lonely.
Make time to meet people
Maybe it seems that you don’t have time to meet new friends, but you need to consider your social life first. 1 You can even offer to take a neighbor’s dog for a walk. The neighbor will surely like to make friends with you.
Build your community online
Without doubt, it’s difficult for you to move to meet like-minded people. However, the Internet can easily bring people with the same interests together. 2 Try some safe meetup websites, which list local groups and events, bringing people with common interests together.
Plan ahead
5 Rather than just suggesting meeting together, carry it out with an exact date and a careful plan. If you plan to meet more people, making a survey about the plan ahead of time will make the meeting more successful.
A.Find out more about it and discuss it with them.
B.So it is easy to build an online friend community.

D.Your body won’t blink as much naturally, you’ll have to force yourself to blink.
E.So you don’t have to worry about it.
F.Locate the computer screen 4 or 5 inches below your eye level.

Body language is communication without words. It includes facial expressions, eyes, touching, and tone of voice, as well as the space between two or more people. 1
One of the most common forms of body language is gestures. Some children throw their hands up in the air or walk off with heavy feet to show they are angry. 2 Each child is different, so it is important to spend time with a child to learn her gestures and meanings.
Another kind of body language is facial expressions. It is easy to know when children like or dislike something. 3 Reading facial expressions, together with asking the right questions, will help you better understand. what she is thinking or feeling.
A child’s use of space depends on her family and cultural environment. If a child is raised in a family that is very physically affectionate (举止亲昵的), she will be more comfortable with physical contact. However, a child raised in a non-physically affectionate family may be uncomfortable in the same situation. 4 Knowing the differences in different children will help you understand each child.
The tone of a child’s voice will help to understand the message she’s sending. 5 If a child is saying she is happy, but her tone sounds different, you may want to ask a few questions to see if she is being honest.
A.Everyone has personal space, even children.
B.If a child sounds happy, she most probably is happy.
C.Facial expressions give away what a child is thinking or feeling.
D.Understanding the body language of children is important to parents.
E.Gestures are usually paired up with spoken communication, but they don’t have to be.
F.Communication is mostly done through body language.
