Should pet cats be allowed to go outside?
Pet cats that live or go outside kill lots of wild animals. 1
Still, it hasn’t been clear what kind of an influence the world’s 600 million pet cats have on wildlife populations(人口或物种数量)—and whether that is a risk to biodiversity conservation(生物多样性).
“ 2 And the question is, ‘Well, does it matter? ’And especially we want to know, ‘ Where are the cats actually hunting? 3 ’” Roland Kays from North Carolina State University said.
Together with colleagues(同事) in the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, Kays gave small GPS trackers to citizen to study cats with owners. 4 In total, more than 900 pet cats were tracked in this way, all of them allowed to run freely outside.
5 One British cat called Max walked almost two kilometers to go out and back home along a road between two neighboring villages!
