Passage 1[2024襄阳市襄州区一模改编]
As the powerful singing voice of 71-year-old Liu Aibang echoes
(回荡) across the classroom, students control shadow puppets
(皮影木偶) with thin straight pieces of wood, making them step onto
the “stage”—a cloth screen provided with light from behind.
4
Those sitting in front of the stage play music on drums, suona and other
instruments.
This is a Daoqing Shadow Puppetry class at Longdong University.
Besides Liu, the other performers of the show are all college students.
Starting in the Han Dynasty, Daoqing Shadow Puppetry has been
included in the national intangible cultural heritage list(非物质文化遗产
名录) since 2006.
However, with technologies becoming more and more popular, many
performers moved on to other jobs. Faced with the choice between
protecting this art and making a good living, Liu chose to stay on.
One day in 2020, Liu got a phone call from Zhao Zhixue, the
director of the music school at Longdong University. Zhao told him that
the school planned to introduce Daoqing Shadow Puppetry into college
classrooms. “We want to develop young students' long-term interest in
intangible cultural heritage,” said Zhao.
Excited by the news, Liu became a part-time teacher at the college.
He came to school twice a week, teaching a two-hour class each time.
Liu hopes to train more young people. “Just as true love is not a one-
man show, the inheritance(传承) of cultural heritage needs efforts from
both the old and the young,” Liu said.

Passage 5[2024营口一模改编]
You may sometimes notice athletes with purple circles on
their skin from cupping. Or maybe you know someone who
swears(极其信赖) acupuncture for their back pain. More
and more people use practices from traditional Chinese medicine like
these not only to fight diseases, but also to prevent it.
TCM is short for traditional Chinese medicine. It is an ancient
system of health and wellness. It's been used in China for thousands of
32
years. Western medicine focuses mainly on treating diseases. But TCM
looks at your entire well-being.
Western medicine tends to view the body a lot like a car. It has
different systems that need the right inputs and outputs. It's very specific
(具体的) and logical.
TCM is based on balance, harmony(和谐) and energy. There are
two central ideas behind TCM. One is qi, the other is yin and yang. Qi
is also called life energy or vital energy.
The belief is that it runs throughout your body. It's always on the move
and continually changes. TCM treatments often focus on ways to promote
and maintain the flow of qi.
Yin and yang are opposites that describe the qualities of qi. The
belief is that everything in life has a little bit of its opposite, too, and
balance is the key. For example, a drug from your doctor might cure
diseases. But it's dangerous if you take too much of it.
According to TCM, these ideas play out in our bodies. When you
balance the yin and yang of qi, you feel healthy and well. If they're in
disorder, you feel sick. TCM aims to create harmony and a healthy flow
of qi.
Experts believe it's safe, if you go to someone who knows what
they're doing. This is especially true of acupuncture, tai chi, and cupping.
With a little background on how it's used, I believe you can make wiser
choices to improve your health.

Passage 10[2024威海一模改编]
By drawing patterns on the surface of a cup of tea, Chabaixi, an
ancient Chinese tea trick shown in a recent TV drama, has been famous
for it is similar to modern latte art(咖啡拉花). However, ten years ago,
this special technique was close to disappearing completely. Zhang
Zhifeng, a practitioner of Chabaixi, found scenes of Chabaixi in the
drama aroused great interest among ordinary people, so he started to try
his best to recover it.
62
Chabaixi can create endless patterns such as bamboos and mountains
or even calligraphy. There are over a dozen steps from grinding(碾碎)
tea for fine powder to pouring boiled water, stirring the mixture for thick
froth(泡沫) and finally drawing the patterns. It is different from
making latte because people use clear water as the object to put into the
cup instead of milk. But when the water touches the surface of whipped
(搅打起泡沫的) tea, it turns into a white color and disappears in 20
minutes. The process before the drawing is known as the tea-making
technique, diancha, the quality of which is important to whether patterns
can be successfully produced later.
“Chabaixi is one of the countless forms of tea-making techniques in
China. The importance of Chabaixi is that not only is this technique
special in the world, but also gives us a window into people's lifestyle in
the Song Dynasty, a period of time when relaxation activities in some
ways are like what we have now,” Zhang said.

Passage 11[2024重庆沙坪坝一模改编]
Do you know the elephant-foot drum? Xie Wenping, 32, used to
follow his grandfather who made elephant-foot drums for a living to
learn how to make a drum. “I had decided to make more and better
drums when I grew up,” Xie said.
The elephant-foot drum is the most typical musical instrument of the
Dai ethnic group. The drum-making skill was listed as a national
intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) in 2011.
68
Elephant-foot drums carry great cultural importance. However, making
an elephant-foot drum is no easy task. “Making an elephant-foot drum
takes about 30 steps and one month,” Xie explained.
After picking the wood, one needs to carve(雕刻) the wood into
an elephant-leg-like shape and hollow out the inside so that the drum can
make a sound. The drum surface is made of cowhide(牛皮), which
needs to go through several steps such as leather selection(皮料选择),
cleaning, air drying and cutting. Then comes the painting. The drum is
painted with patterns showing ethnic elements and covered with a
protective topcoat(防护面漆). The finishing steps include tuning
(调音), and polishing the fur. “A good elephant-foot drum should have
a thick and loud sound when beaten,” Xie said.
The repetition of the work might not be so exciting, but whenever
Xie sees his grandfather's smile while making the drum, he feels
encouraged again. “Over the years, the number of craftspeople(工匠)
skilled in making elephant-foot drums has gone down,” Xie said. “I feel
like it's my responsibility to carry it on.”
Xie has innovated(创新) the form of the drum. To make it easier
for the elephant-foot drum to spread to places outside Yunnan, Xie came
up with the idea of making a mini kind of the drum and designed key
chains shaped like the elephant-foot drum.
