Marie Van Brittan Brown, an African American nurse living in Jamaica, Queens in the 1960s, was working in shifts, as was her husband, Albert, an electronics technician. When she arrived home late, she sometimes felt afraid. Serious crimes in Queens jumped nearly 32 percent from 1960 to 1965, and police were slow to respond to emergency calls. Marie wanted to feel safer at home.
With the help of her husband, Marie imagined a device that could be attached to the front door. It would offer four small holes, and through these, a video camera on the inside could view visitors of different heights as the host turned the camera up and down. The camera was connected to a television monitor inside. A microphone on the outside of the door and a speaker inside allowed the host to interrogate a visitor, while an alarm could inform police via radio.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV), invented during World War II for military use, was not widespread in the 1960s, and the Browns proposed using the technology to create the first modern home security system. They filed a patent for their device in 1966, citing(提及) Marie as the lead inventor. It was approved three years later. “The equipment is not in production,” The New York Times reported, “but the Browns hope to interest manufacturers and home builders.” That never happened. “The cost of installing(安装) it widely would be pretty high,” says Robert McCrie, an emergency management expert at John Jay College of Criminal Justice in Manhattan.
Marie’s invention, though it didn’t benefit them financially, would earn the Browns a measure of recognition in the technology world: The predecessor(前身) of today’s home security systems, it has been cited(引用) in 35 U.S. patents.
19. What can be learned about Marie?
A. She lived in a dangerous neighborhood. B. She worked as an electronics technician.
C She went home with her husband every day. D. She was afraid of making an emergency call.
20. What does the underlined word “interrogate” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Attract. B. Frighten. C. Welcome. D. Question.
21. What was the problem with the Browns’ system?
A. It was considered to be a silly invention. B. It was thought little of by the then police.
C. It was too expensive to be mass-produced. D. It was illegal to be used by ordinary people.
22. What can we say about Marie and her husband?
A. They contributed a lot to CCTV. B. They were generous and responsible.
C. They helped reduce crime in the 1960s. D. They were intelligent and worthy of respect.
【答案】19. A 20. D 21. C 22. D

【分析】本文是说明文。文章主要讲述玛丽和她的丈夫因为住在犯罪率较高的社区,就想有个安全的居住环境,而设计了一款设备。
【19题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段“Serious crimes in Queens jumped nearly 32 percent from 1960 to 1965, and police were slow to respond to emergency calls. Marie wanted to feel safer at home.”(皇后区的严重的犯罪从1960到1965年跳了将近32%,并且警察出警的速度很慢。玛丽想在家里感到更安全点。)可知,玛丽住的社区不安全。故选A。
【20题详解】
词句猜测题。根据这句话“A microphone on the outside of the door and a speaker inside allowed the host to interrogate a visitor, while an alarm could inform police via radio.”(门外面的话筒和门内的扬声器允许主人interrogate来访者,同时警铃可以通过无线电通知警察。)可知,interrogate是及物动词,a visitor是它的宾语。根据上文的A microphone on the outside of the door and a speaker inside可知,门外面的话筒和门内的扬声器都是可以传达声音的设备,所以就可以让家里的主人通过这些设备和门外的人说话,问门外的人问题。D选项“质问,提问”和它意思接近。故选D。
【21题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“The equipment is not in production”(这个设备没有大量生产)和“The cost of installing(安装) it widely would be pretty high”(广泛安装的费用相当的高)可知,这个设备的不足之处在于大量生产的费用太高。故选C。
【22题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Marie’s invention, though it didn’t benefit them financially, would earn the Browns a measure of recognition in the technology world: The predecessor(前身) of today’s home security systems, it has been cited(引用) in 35 U.S. patents.”(尽管玛丽的发明没有为他们挣大钱,但是却给布朗一家赢得了在技术界的认可:现在家里的安保系统的前身,它已经在35个美国专利上被引用。)可知,玛丽和她的丈夫很聪明,并且获得了大家的认可和尊敬。故选D。

In much of the western United States, drought and access to fresh water is a critical issue. However, recently California came up with a novel solution. The state approved regulations that allow agencies to purify wastewater for drinking. This recycled wastewater may be consumed in homes, schools, and businesses.
As the population in California has exploded in recent decades, the state has struggled to meet demands for fresh water. Recycled wastewater will allow the state to increase access to the precious resource.
Recycled wastewater is not new to the state. It has previously been used in ice hockey rinks (冰球场), for crops, and to generate artificial snow. But now, water agencies will have the option to put recycled wastewater back into pipes for drinking. California is only the second state to allow purified wastewater to be consumed. The first was Colorado in 2022.
While the idea of drinking recycled wastewater may be off-putting, regulators spent more than a decade developing rules and regulations to ensure safety. Independent panels of scientists also reviewed the state’s rules around recycled wastewater consumption. All water will be treated for pathogens (病原体) and viruses before being available for consumption.
So far, the state’s plan has been met with approval from large water agencies. Many of them have plans to construct wastewater recycling plans over the next few years. In Southern California, the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California has set a goal aiming to produce 150 million gallons of direct and indirect recycled water per day. This water will be in the pipes of the 19 million people throughout the six counties that the agency serves.
Officials are aware that a certain amount of public convincing may still be necessary. However, they remain optimistic about the future of the project, reminding consumers that the water is safe, and that recycled water is already in use in California.
23. Why does California pass new regulations about recycled wastewater?
A. To ease the pressure of drought. B. To increase the supply of fresh water.
C. To recycle the wastewater for industry. D. To reduce the pollution of the wastewater.
24. What does the underlined word “off-putting” mean in paragraph 4?
A. Surprising. B. Necessary. C. Funny. D. Awful.
25. What can we learn from paragraph 5?
A. The goal of wastewater recycling is hard to achieve.
B. The state’s plan will be conducted by water agencies.
C. Southern California will reduce its water production.
D. People in California tend to prefer recycled water.
26. What do the public think of the recycled water project?
A. Many people still disapprove of the project.
B. The public are optimistic about the project.
C. It will never be suitable to use recycled water.
D. The project is the only solution to water shortage.
【答案】23. B 24. D 25. B 26. A

Air pollution is among the biggest threats against humans, which causes seven million early deaths a year. To fight this problem, four friends put their heads together and designed CityTree, which is a mobile structure that can capture as many pollutants as a forest made up of 275 trees. What makes the ‘tree’ special is that it’s not a regular tree at all; it is made up of moss cultures (苔藓培养物) that do a great job of absorption.
“Moss cultures have a much larger surface than any other plant,” Zhengliang Wu, co-founder of Green City Solutions, explained to CNN. “That means we can capture more pollutants.” The entire ‘tree’ sustains itself using solar panels that generate electricity so that it can collect rainwater itself. To monitor the health of the moss, the CityTree has sensors which measure temperature and water quality.
Now, about 20 CityTrees can be found in major cities like Oslo, and Paris. The team also has plans to introduce the CityTree to cities in lower-income countries, which may have worse air pollution.
However, Gary Fuller, an expert on air pollution, thinks that the concept of an urban air purifier might be too ambitious. “Even if you had a perfect air cleaner, getting the surrounding air in contact with it is really hard,” he said. Pollution made by cars, for example, spreads upwards a few kilometers into the air. “Efforts would be better put into stopping the pollution from forming in the first place,” he added.
In response, the CityTree inventors say that they are aware of this and choose the location of each CityTree carefully. They are also testing a system to create their own air flow that draws the pollution to the “tree”.
27. What is paragraph 2 mainly about concerning the CityTree?
A. Its appearance. B. Its operating process.
C. How it works. D. How it gets powered.
28. What is Gary Fuller’s attitude to the CityTree?
A. Doubtful. B. Intolerant. C. Worried. D. Unclear.
29. What will the CityTree inventors probably do?
A. Develop a new type of air cleaner. B. Make improvements to the structure.
C. Redirect efforts to make greener cars. D. Expand their business in rich countries.
30. Which of the following is the best title for this text?
A. Global Efforts in Planting Trees B. The Alarming Trend of Air Pollution
C. A Structure that Will Change the World D. The ‘Tree’ with the Green Benefits of a Forest

I sat on the sofa with coffee in hand, and turned on the morning news. I needed something to take my mind off my worries. A few days earlier I’d suddenly decided to fly all the way across the country to Florida for my dad’s birthday. In fact, my dad and I didn’t get along. I hadn’t seen him for a long time.
I thought back painfully on the past. When I was very little, Dad started his own business by opening a car repair shop. Business at the shop was struggling. Dad often came home tired and ill-tempered (脾气暴躁的), and I made sure to stay out of his way. I couldn’t honestly say whether he loved me.
This time I had scheduled a flight to Florida, hoping I would manage to please him and improve our relationship. Now I needed a gift. But what? Suddenly I remembered I’d begun making a quilt (被子) for Dad years ago. I’d set the quilt aside pretty quickly because I thought he wouldn’t appreciate it anyway.
Then I searched through a bag storing quilts in the back of my closet. I caught my breath as I found several unfinished pieces of the quilt. I gathered the pieces and studied them, deciding to finish this quilt using a special pattern. I looked online for some patterns and quickly found one called Mourning Cloak-a butterfly.
Suddenly a wave of memories made my heart race. I always loved butterflies as a kid. I once brought a caterpillar (毛虫) home and raised it until it turned into a butterfly. That day, totally unexpectedly, Dad took me to meet Augie Schmitt, a professional butterfly collector in a nearby town. He had taught me everything I knew about insects. Maybe the shared memory about butterflies could help renew our connection, I thought to myself.
I carefully stitched (缝) butterflies onto the quilt, completing the gift the day before my flight. I planned the parents’ house, I walked nervously to the front door and knocked. My visit as a total surprise. After arriving at my dad almost fell over when he saw me.
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Happy birthday, Dad,” I said, bringing out the quilt.

【答案】范文
“Happy birthday, Dad,” I said, bringing out the quilt. Catching sight of the design on the quilt, he froze with his mouth wide open and throat tightened. His smile lit up his face, as if he had been waiting for me. Gently I put the quilt in his arms. My dad held the quilt close, saying, tears sparkling in his eyes, “This is the best gift I have received. I love you, baby. Thank you.” A wave of warmth came through my body. I hugged my dad tightly, saying in a guilty voice, “Please forgive me for not being able to see you early.”“It doesn’t matter! baby.” He said gently. “I’ll show you around your old bedroom.”
As I stepped into my old bedroom, I noticed some lovely butterfly pictures on the walls. When I was watching them, my dad said softly, “I’ve been collecting butterfly pictures over the years. I always hope you will come back home some day.” Touched by his words, I replied, “Dad, I’m here now . Let’s create new family memories together.”It’s love that removed misunderstanding between us, which I felt deep in my heart.

Marie’s invention, though it didn’t benefit them financially, would earn the Browns a measure of recognition in the technology world: The predecessor(前身) of today’s home security systems, it has been cited(引用) in 35 U.S. patents.

I gathered the pieces and studied them deciding to finish this quilt using a special pattern.
注意:1. 续写词数应150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
“Happy birthday, Dad,” I said, bringing out the quilt.
