[202l一2022山东省威海市高一下期未]Ken Banks saw that in South Africa, many organisations
trying to help local communities had difficulty with communication, because many villages didn't have
Internet access.Banks noticed, however, that many villagers had cell phones.
Banks had an idea.He created the computer software called FrontlineSMS,which allows users to
send information from computers without using the Internet.Users put the software in a computer. Then
they connect the computer to a cell phone. To send information, users select the people they want to send
it to.The cell phone sends the information to groups of people as a text message.Individuals can then
reply on their own cell phones, creating a two-way messaging system between phone users and
the computer.

UNIT 2 SUCCESS
FrontlineSMS is free and can work almost anywhere in the world.Today,it is used in over
190 countries.
FrontlineSMS is a successful example of taking an idea and making it a reality. So what should you
do if you have an idea for making the world a better place?Banks offers the following advice:
Research your idea or product thoroughly. To find out if you have a good idea,go into the
community and talk to people. And then promote your idea on social media.Use all the social media
tools that you can.Connect online with other people who are working in the same field as you.The more
you post, the easier it will be for search engines to find you.Once you've gotten your message out,
people will notice you.Now is the time to try to get funding.Wait until you have gotten this far to show
potential donors that you have initiative. It also shows that you are committed.
We're currently living in the best time when more and more entrepreneurs(企业家)are developing
and promoting products that have the potential to solve the world's greatest challenges. All you need
is an idea.

[2021一2022广东省汕头市高-下期未]Ever since Lucy Nabiki Takona was a young girl growing up in
a village in Kenya, she knew she wanted to have a career in education.
So when her father told her when she was 14 that she would have to drop out of school to marry the
son of her father's friend, she ran away.It took her three days to walk through the bush to her
aunt's house.
"I was used to walking,so for me it was not something big,"Takona says."It was scarier to get
married than walk on your own in the bush.
Later,Takona's aunt talked to some influential elders in the community who were able to persuade
her father to let her continue her schooling-while schooling for many Masai girls ends in their early
teen years.
As a child,Takona says, she thought her only career option as a woman was to be a teacher. But
during a trip to the Nairobi National Museum in her last year of high school, she realized there were other
possibilities."A woman took us around the museum and she really had knowledge,so from that day
forward I knew girls could be something more than teachers."Takona says.
So she went to study at the Koiyaki Guiding School for two years on a scholarship from a volunteer
travel organization African Impact. She then worked for the group as a guide for 18 months in return.
But on the road to success,Takona has had to make personal sacrifices. She is the single mother of
a 4-year-old boy."It's rare in a Masai community to be an independent woman,"says Evaline Sintoya
Mayetu, who was the first Masai woman to get the Silver Guide Qualification in March 2015."I would

[2021一2022浙江省绍兴市高-下期未]Alan Mathison Turing was bom in England in19I2.Like
many talents who go on to great things,Turing showed his incredible intelligence from a very young age.
In fact,by the time he was halfway through primary school,Turing's teachers had already realized he was
a mathematical genius. He could do complex calculating in his head even though he had never been
taught about it.
Fortunately,Turing was the opposite of Hawking, and he absolutely loved school.Proof of this is
the extreme lengths he would go just to get to class. For example,on one occasion when there was a train
strike,Turing even cycled 60 miles to attend.Now that's devotion!
However,in spite of Turing's scholarly attitude and his obvious genius, his teachers had their
concerns about his future. This is because well-known schools in Britain like the ones Turing attended
regarded the Classics, such as Latin and Greek as the most important, not subjects like maths and
science.Turing's proud teachers even wrote letters to his parents asking them to convince the young man
to focus more on the Classics.Imagine how different the world might be if the young Turing had listened
to his teachers!Thankfully, his love for all things scientific and mathematical meant there was no chance
of that.
After finishing secondary school,Turing completed a degree in mathematics at King's College
Cambridge, and then obtained his PhD from Princeton University in the USA.It was during these
university years that he invented the Turing Machine, which is considered by many people to be the
earliest version of a computer processing unit.It sounds unbelievable that anybody could have invented
something which was similar to a computer in 1936.But that just shows how far ahead of his time Alan
Turing was, even when he was still a young man.
5.What can be inferred about Turing according to paragraph 2?
A.He maintained an interest in the Classics.B.He rejected attending famous schools.
C.He showed a strong desire for schooling.D.He ignored parents'advice on course selection.
6.What does the writer think of the Turing Machine?
A.He argues it's still limited in many functions.
B.He thinks it's influential in computer history.
C.He doubts if it is truly invented by a young man.
D.He considers the construction of such machines impossible.
7.What is the author's main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To indicate the link between genius and success.

B.To illustrate the invention of the Turing Machine.
C.To stress the impact of teachers'guidance on Turing's life.

A.Nothing great was ever achieved without enthusiasm.
B.Ordinary people hope, while talented people create.
C.Contented with little, yet wishing for more.
D.Chances favor the minds that are prepared.

Failures are not the endings, but the beginnings of learning experiences that can help inspire you to the
next success.1.
●Admit your mistakes
The biggest difficulty we face in getting over our failures and turning them into successes is admitting we
have made a mistake. If we don't,we might be caught in a cycle of shame and self-doubt.2.

Making a mistake,no matter how big or small it is,can be frightening.3.
But when we
come to recognize that we can't avoid fear,we can accept our mistakes, correct them, and move
forward confidently.

Sometimes, the best thing we can do when we fail is to ask someone to help us.We could be shy to
reach out to others for help when we feel like we haven't done our best.Telling people why you think you
failed, and what you need help with is considered to be strength. Many people who have failed in their
own ways will be there to lend a hand to help you achieve your goals.
Plan for the next failure

[2021一2022河北省石家庄市高一下期未]A month before my6 f rst marathon, one of my ankles was
injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train.Yet,I made up my
mind to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E.class,the teacher required us to run
laps and then hit a softball.I didn't do either well.He later informed me that I was "not athletic".
The idea that I was "not athletic"stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s,I
realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It
was all about the battle against my own body and mind.A test of wills!
The night before my marathon,I dreamt that I couldn't even find the finish line.I woke up sweating
and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line,my shoe laces (became untied. So I stopped to readjust.
Not the start I wanted!
At mile3,I passed a sign:“GO FOR IT,RUNNERS!”
By mile 17,I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly.Despite the pain,I
stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21,I was starving!
As I approached mile 23,I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan.She never
minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 am or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish.But I finished!And I got a medal.In fact,I got the same
medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Make a firm decision, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签).I can now call
myself a“marathon winner”.
1.How did the author feel a month before the marathon?
A.Confident.
B.Tired.
C.Determined.
D.Hopeless.
2.Why did the author mention the P.E.class in his 7th year?
