Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last(持续)very long. To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.
Honesty helps start a good friendship. Friends must be able to trust(信任)each other. If you don’t tell the truth, people usually find out. If a friend finds out that you are not honest, you may lose your friend’s trust. Good friends should always speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing and sharing makes a friendship grow. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes, or enjoyments, like your hobbies and your interests. Sooner or later everyone needs understanding and help with a problem. Something may go wrong at school. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve(解决). Turning to a friend can be a first step in solving the problem. So to be a friend you must listen and understand. When I looked at the grade on my math paper, I was shocked: a big “65” in bright red ink. As a good student in my teachers’ eyes, I had never received such a terrible grade before.
I was so afraid that when I got home that afternoon I lied to my dad. I told him I got 85 and the report wouldn’t come until the end of the month. Dad smiled. Because he never thought that his daughter would lie to him.
A month later, Dad asked me again about the report at the dinner table. He looked right into my eyes and asked for an answer. Having no choice, I told him that I had in fact just 65 in my math exam. I told a lie because I didn’t want to let him down.
For a moment, he just looked at me. After a quiet moment, in the end, Dad said, in a hurt voice, “You have already let me down, with your lie. I am not sad at your math score. That is no big deal — no one can be perfect all the time. However, I am very sorry for you. If you can’t be honest with your dad, who can you be honest with? It’s much easier to get a better grade than rebuild others’ trust in you. ”
Dad’s words touched my heart. I took out the report, gave it to him and said sorry to him. My father smiled and touched my head gently, “I’m glad you understand that.” At that time, I knew that my honesty is not only important to myself, but to those around me that truly care about my happiness.

Grandma called me in from the yard. “Would you please go to the store for me, Emma? I’m ready to make cakes, but there aren’t enough eggs. Take 20 dollars from my wallet.” I found Grandma’s wallet and put the money in my pocket.
I arrived at the store soon. “Mr. Jenkins,” I said, “Grandma needs some eggs.” Mr. Jenkins set the eggs on the counter (柜台). He smiled at me. “And what else do you need?” I knew what he meant. I was always allowed to pick a piece of candy when I came to the store with Grandma. “How much change do I have from 20 dollars?” I asked. “Seven dollars.” Mr. Jenkins replied. I thought about that quickly. I was sure Grandma wouldn’t care if I spent two dollars. The longer I looked at the candy display, the more certain I became that I needed two dollars’ worth as a reward for coming to the store alone. And I did so.
“Thank you, Emma,” Grandma said when I laid the eggs on the table. “Did you put the change back in my wallet?” “Yes, Grandma.” I replied, hurrying out to the yard. “I hadn’t really lied to Grandma,” I argued with myself. “I did put back all the change I had.”

Most people agree that honesty is a good thing. But does Mother Nature agree? Animals can’t talk, but can they lie with their bodies and behavior? Animal experts may not call it lying, but they do agree that many animals behave dishonestly to fool other animals. Dishonesty often helps them survive (生存).
Many kinds of birds are very successful at fooling other animals. A bird called the plover sometimes pretends (假装) to be hurt in order to protect its young. When an enemy gets close to its nest, the plover pretends to have a broken wing. The enemy follows the “hurt” adult, leaving the baby birds safe.
Another kind of bird, the scrub jay, buries (埋) its food so it always has something to eat. Scrub jays also steal food. They watch where others bury their food and steal it. But clever scrub jays seem to know when others are watching them. So they get back later, unbury the food, and bury it again somewhere else.
Chimpanzees can also be sneaky. After a fight, the losing chimpanzee will give its hand to the other. When the winning chimpanzee puts out its hand, too, the chimpanzees are friendly again. But an animal expert once saw a losing chimpanzee take the winner’s hand and start fighting again. When chimpanzees find food that they love, such as bananas, it’s natural for them to cry out. Then other chimpanzees come running. But some clever chimpanzees learn to cry very softly when they find food. That way, other chimpanzees don’t hear them, and they don’t need to share the food.
1.Why does the plover pretend to be hurt?
A.To protect its nest. B.To show its friendliness.
C.To save its young. D.To catch the enemy.
2.What do clever scrub jays do with their food?
A.They bury the food deep. B.They bury the food twice.
C.They watch the food. D.They eat up all the food.
3.What will the chimpanzee probably do after crying softly?
A.It will eat all the food it finds. B.It will share the food with others.
C.It will fight again with the winner. D.It will make friends with others.
4.According to Paragraph 4, in which picture can we find a “sneaky” animal?
A. B. C. D.

A.Do Animals Lie? B.Honesty or Dishonesty?

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last very long. To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest, be generous(慷慨的), be understanding.
Honesty is where a good friendship starts. Friends must be able to trust one another. If a friend finds out that you aren’t honest, you may lose your friend’s trust. Good friends always ask one another to speak and act honestly.
Generosity means sharing. You don’t have to give your lunch money or your clothes to your friends. Instead you have to learn how to share things you enjoy. And naturally you will want to share your ideas and feeling. They tell your friends what is important to you. By sharing, your friends can know you better.
Sooner or later everyone needs understanding when something goes wrong. Talking about the problem can make it easier to solve. So to be a friend, you must learn to listen and understand. You must try to put yourself in your friend’ place, so you can understand the problem better.
No two friendships are ever exactly the same. But all true friendships have three things in common. If you plan to keep your friendships you must practice honesty, generosity and understanding.

Too many people want others to be their friends, but they don’t give friendship back. That is why some friendships don’t last(持续)very long. To have a friend, you must learn to treat your friend the way you want your friend to treat you. Learning to be a good friend means learning three rules: be honest; be generous; be understanding.

So, can you not begin until I come back from school?’ His father agreed. However, after the boy left, the workers began to work and completed the task in time. So when the boy returned home, he found the old pavilion gone. Therefore, he said angrily to his father, ‘Dad, you told me a lie!’ Although his father was unaware (不知情) of it, he felt embarrassed and said, ‘My boy, I was wrong.’ Then his father called in the workers again and had them rebuild a pavilion in the shape of the old one. After the pavilion was rebuilt, he called in his son and said to the workers, ‘Please take it down now.’”
“I know the father. He was not rich, but he kept his promise.”
Hearing this, the students said, “What’s the father’s name? We hope to know him.”
Fox said, “He died, but his son is still alive.”
“Then, where’s his son? He must learn to keep his promise and is surely an honest man.”
Fox said, “His son is standing here. It’s me. I’d like to treat every one of my country like my father treated me.”
