When I was 5 or 6 years old, I was a naughty boy. One day, I tried to steal gum (口香糖) from the drugstore when my mom took me shopping. I stood in front of the gum shelf, staring nervously at the gum, waiting for the right moment. After about 30 minutes, I finally made my move, just as my mom was calling me to leave. As we walked away, a store worker walked up to my mom and told her that I had taken a pack of gum, which cost 5 cents back then.
My mom was really angry and insisted (坚持认为) that it was impossible because her son was honest, good, and never lied or did anything bad. However, the store worker explained that all the workers had been watching me for half an hour. They guessed that I would steal and that it was challenging for them to wait so long before I actually did it. To solve the matter, my mom searched me, checked my pockets, and found nothing. The man was surprised, and my mom was proud and even scolded (责备) him.
Seeing the man’s face turn red, I felt very sorry. I had to make a choice. As he started to walk away, I took off my cap, reached inside, and offered the pack of gum to him. I said sorry with all my heart. If he was surprised before, he was shocked now, as was my mother, but for a different reason.
Though I was punished, I never regretted admitting it. It was my self-control that stopped me from becoming a bad person.
6. Why did the store worker stop the boy’s mother?
A. To check her shopping list again.
B. To give her change for five cents.
C To praise the boy for not stealing in the end.
D. To tell her that the boy had stolen something.
7. How did the boy’s mother feel about the store worker’s message?
A. She believed the store worker at once.
B. She got very angry and protected her son.
C. She scolded her son for his behavior.
D. She said sorry to the store worker.
8. What did the boy do when he realized his mistake?
A. He decided not to think about it.
B. He ran away from the store.
C. He admitted it and said sorry.
D. He scolded his mother.
9. How did the mother feel after the boy gave the pack of gum to the store worker?
A. Regretful. B. Happy. C. Proud. D. Shocked.
10. What lesson might the boy have learned from this experience?
A. It is easy to get away with stealing.
B. Self-control is important in making good choices.
C. It is okay to lie to avoid punishment.
D. Stealing is acceptable if you don’t get caught.
C
What do you call your mother’s mother? Whether you say laolao or waipo depends on your dialect. And humans aren’t the only ones who have different dialects. Animals do, too!
Scientists at Aarhus University in Denmark spent six years studying sperm whales (抹香鲸) in the Caribbean. They found that the animals communicate through special clicking noises that are unique to their group. This call has never been found in Pacific whales.
According to National Geographic, researchers studied the howls (嚎叫) of different species of wolves. They found that red wolves, Arctic wolves and coyotes (郊狼) have howls that can change in pitch (高音). In other words, they have their own dialects.
Other animals that have been shown to have dialects include bats and dogs.
So how do animals develop their own dialects? According to Darcy Kelley from Columbia University, most animals learn their accents naturally. For example, macaques (猕猴) start speaking their dialect as soon as they are born. Scientists placed some macaques in a new environment where their playmates all spoke a different dialect. But the macaques still spoke their own dialect. Their environment has no impact on their communication, according to the Washington Post.
However, some animals can change their accent according to their environment. Birds that live in cities develop different accents from those in the countryside. To deal with loud city noise, city birds’ tweets are high-pitched, according to the Sun. These high-pitched tweets are easier to hear in noisy places.
So can animals learn a new dialect from others?
“A proper accent is key to mating and warning the coming of enemies, which is the basis of living.” Kelley told the Washington Post. A species can’t risk changing its own dialect and learning a new one.
11. The sperm whales in Paragraph 2 are used to show that ______.
A animals can communicate with each other B. animals like sperm whales may also have dialects
C. whales communicate by using clicking noises D. sperm whales live only in the Caribbean
12. Why do researchers believe that wolves have dialects?
A. Because there are different species of wolves.
B. Because wolves live in different areas of the world.
C. Because wolves of different species howl at different pitches.
D. Because wolves can communicate with each other by howling.
13. Which of the following would Darcy Kelley agree with?
A. Most animals start learning their dialects when they are born.
B. Macaques can learn a new dialect quickly in a new environment.
C. The environment can have an influence on animals’ dialects.
D. Some birds can change their accents to deal with loud noises.
14. Birds living in cities develop high-pitched accents to ______.
A. attract mates B. make special sounds
C. be heard over noises D. protect their language
15. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A. The development of animals dialects. B. The importance of animal’ dialects.
C. The differences between animals dialects. D. The problems animals face.
D
We all enjoy being part of a group — there’s no better work than teamwork, right? Actually, I disagree. Teamwork can be hard. In fact, it was so difficult that I left my office job and started working from home on my own. It’s a much better fit for me, and it has made me think about why teamwork can make our jobs harder rather than easier.
Personalities (个性) can make teamwork difficult. There’s often someone on the team that puts their needs first. The team often goes along with this person, whose ideas might not be the best, just the loudest. Just one difficult personality can make teamwork hard. Combine (结合) several challenging personality types, and it’s even harder.
Not having enough time together can also make teamwork challenging. For example, I was once on a team where we never had enough time to meet as a group. To successfully work as a team, you need time together — and lots of it.
A final reason teamwork is difficult is because there’s often no training on how to work on a team. You can’t just put people in a room and expect them to work well with each other. You need to build trust with your team members. Think of football players: They aren’t just given a ball and told to play. They practice, and they train.
Team can be hard, but working alone has its challenges, too. When my computer doesn’t work, I don’t have an IT person to turn to. When I have a great idea, I don’t have anyone to share it with to see if it really is a great idea. Don’t get me wrong — I still like my team of one and enjoy making all of the important decisions myself. But now I realize what was wrong with the teamwork I did in the past and how good teamwork could be if done correctly. And that’s useful information — because one day I might want to turn my ME TEAM into a WE TEAM.
16. Why did the writer choose to work from home on his own?
A. To keep himself busier. B. To keep himself healthier.
C. To make his job easier. D. To make his team harder.
17. Which of the following makes teamwork difficult?
A. Strong personality. B. Lots of teamwork time.
C. Challenging ideas. D. Clear team roles.
18. What does the author say about time and teamwork?
A. Teams need a lot of time together to succeed.
B. Teams can work well even without meeting often.
C. Time is not important for teamwork.
D. Teams should only meet once a week.
19. What can we learn from the last paragraph?
A. WE TEAM has hardly any advantages.
B. ME TEAM needs a lot of IT engineers.
C. ME TEAM has no challenges for the writer.
D. WE TEAM may be the writer’s choice one day.
20. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To show the advantages of teamwork. B. To tell the importance of teamwork.
C. To introduce the influence of teamwork. D. To explain the difficulties of teamwork.

A. animals can communicate with each other B. animals like sperm whales may also have dialects
C. whales communicate by using clicking noises D. sperm whales live only in the Caribbean
