Many times, I learned a graceful (优美的) new word but didn’t know how to use it. And soon, I forgot it. Then I thought, “Why not try using these words by writing a story?”
This is why I decided to write Berry, a story of a pet dog named Berry. Fed up with his boring life as a pet, he decides to travel to the forest.
I consider the story a way to practise English words and grammar, as well as promoting (促进) my writing skills. Usually, it takes me an hour to complete a page, but up to three hours to prepare. I must make sure every word is properly used. Whenever I’m preparing for the writing, I find it really enjoyable. When I open the dictionary, it’s almost impossible to close it.
As I have so many other school subjects to learn, it’s not easy for me to spare enough time for English. Sometimes, I have even thought of giving up. Luckily, the motivation (动机) to learn more helps me carry on.
Writing stories is an unforgettable experience for me and it is a great way to practise my language skills.

A. To use English words properly. B. To tell the story of a pet dog.
C. To record his travel to the forest. D. To make his life interesting.

Why are some people successful and others aren’t? What’s the secret of success? You can get the answers in Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers
Gladwell thinks practice makes you good. The “10,000-hour rule” is central to the book. It means that if you want to be among the best in the world, you need to practise something for 10,000 hours, about three hours a day for 10 years. For example, the Beatles practised playing music in Hamburg more than 1,200 times between 1960 and 1964, which is more than 10,000 hours of playing time.
Gladwell also thinks that intelligence (智力) alone will not lead to success. Christopher Langan, who is mentioned in the book, got an IQ of between 195 and 210. As a boy at school, Langan passed an exam in a foreign language after looking through a text book for three minutes. But Langan never made any achievements his whole life. This shows that besides intelligence, you need hard work, support, and chances.
However, it isn’t just a question of time and support. According to the book, you still need luck. Of course, many people say that you can create your own “luck” if you’re active enough.
So, are you putting in the hours? Carry on! You could get lucky!
42. Why did the writer ask questions in the first paragraph?
A. To ask others for help. B. To list some examples.
C. To draw readers’ attention. D. To introduce successful people.
43. What can we learn from Christopher Langan?
A. Intelligence alone will not lead to success.
B. Success has nothing to do with hard work.
C. Whether we will succeed depends on our IQ.
D. We can learn a foreign language well in minutes.
44. What is the best title for the text?
A. Outliers: The Secret of Success
B. Intelligence: The Key to Success
C. Success: A Question of Time and Support
D. The Beatles: Creator of the 10,000-hour Rule
Coral reefs (珊瑚礁) are home to thousands of living things in the sea, and they help protect the coast. Coral reefs are made up of hundreds or even thousands of tiny animals—corals. However, when temperature rises, corals will turn white and easily get sick. Only 10% to 30% of coral reefs will survive if the world’s temperature rises by 1.5℃.
Researchers have mapped out the coral reefs that are most likely to survive as the world’s weather warms up. They lie mostly along the northern coast of Cuba. Areas in the Bahamas, eastern Jamaica and Haiti can also find some.
Those coral reefs with the highest chance of survival are mapped out to protect them from other forms of damage (破坏). In this way, the coral reefs will survive, and the homes they provide for sea plants and animals will be kept as well.
However, the researchers strongly point out we still need to keep temperature rises as small as possible because even these reefs will be harmed by a rise of 2℃.
45. What does “they” in Paragraph 1 refer to?
A. Coral reefs. B. People’s homes. C. The living things. D. The seas.
46. What does Paragraph 2 mainly tell us?
A. The time to find the coral reefs. B. The ways to protect the coral reefs.
C. The things to do with the coral reefs. D. The places of the mapped—out coral reefs.
47. What is the main problem for coral reefs in the text?
A. The white coast. B. The big animals. C. The increasing plants. D. The rising temperature.
48. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To collect information. B. To call for action. C. To give suggestions. D. To introduce a place.

One sunny morning, a young boy named Daniel was walking through a forest when he noticed a small, struggling butterfly trying to break free from its cocoon (蚕茧), Daniel stopped to watch. The butterfly was pushing hard, but it seemed stuck (被卡住). Feeling sorry for the little creature (生物), Daniel decided to help. He gently tore (撕开) open the cocoon, and the butterfly came out easily. But something was wrong. The butterfly’s wings were shriveled (皱缩的) and weak. So it couldn’t fly. Daniel didn’t understand what had happened.
An old man passing by saw the scene and explained, “The struggle to break free from the cocoon is what gives the butterfly the strength to fly. By helping it, you took away its chance to grow strong.” Daniel realized his mistake. He had wanted to help, what seems like a kind act can prevent someone from developing the strength they need to succeed in life.

Why are some people successful and others aren’t? What’s the secret of success? You can get the answers in Malcolm Gladwell’s book Outliers.
Christopher Langan who is mentioned in the book, got an IQ of between 195 and 210.
