Seven others were so badly damaged that their owners had to leave them, and fifty others had broken windows. One person was killed and nine were badly injured and taken to hospital. A number of other people received small injuries. Altogether, over two hundred were left homeless as a result of the storm, a farmer said. The storm began early in the morning and lasted over an hour. He was in the kitchen with his wife and his children when they heard a loud noise. A few minutes later, their house fell down on top of them. They managed to climb out. But then he saw that one of his children was missing. He went back inside and found him safe, but very frightened. A woman said that her husband had just left for work. When SHE noticed that her house was shaking, SHE rushed outside immediately with her children. There was no time for her to take anything. A few minutes later, the roof came down. This experience caused Hemesh to invent the “Alpha Monitor”, a device designed for dementia (痴呆) patients. He started creating this device with whatever was at home, with the help of the internet. “The first model I built was a huge box. I learnt how to make a wearable device on the internet by learning which components to use and where I could source them in Hyderabad. I started with a hardware device, after which I learnt coding online and moved to machine learning and data science, to help me perfect my device,” he adds. The Alpha Monitor has two parts, one, a wearable watch-like device, and the second, an alarm which connects to it. “You attach the device to the patient. In case the patient throws it away or doesn’t like wearing it, you can just put it in a bag and fix it in their pocket or sock or wherever you like. Once you plug in the alarm, you will be warned for every tiny change in movement. As soon as the patient gets up or wanders away, it will warn the family members with a huge alarm sound,” says Hemesh. The wearable device monitors body temperature, pulse, and detects movement, falls and more. It works using a gyroscope sensor to detect even the slightest movement and health sensors for pulse and temperature. It works without Wi-Fi or bluetooth and has a range of 1-2k m, according to Hemesh. It can also be connected to an app for children staying far away to monitor their parents’ movements. “The happiest I’ve ever been is seeing how the device actually works for patients with Alzheimer’s. It gives me incredible happiness to see the small impact I’ve managed to create in the lives of these families,” smiles the youngster. 24. What can we learn about Hemesh from the first two paragraphs? A. He received little formal education. B. He had a strong self-learning ability. C. He invented the device to stop gas leaks. D. He got support from a computer engineer. 25. How does the Alpha Monitor warn people of patients’ movements? A. By speaking into their phones. B. By producing a loud noise. C. By making an emergency call. D. By announcing the time automatically. 26. What is a feature of the Alpha Monitor? A. It can analyze patients’ health data. B. It can prevent patients from falling down. C. It can track patients’ movements remotely. D. It can make a difference to patients’ recovery. 27. Which of the following can best describe Hemesh? A. Caring and creative. B. Generous and talented. C. Determined and honest. D. Independent and brave. 24. B 25. B 26. C 27. Once you plug in the alarm, you will be warned for every tiny change in movement. As soon as the patient gets up or wanders away, it will warn the family members with a huge alarm sound,” says Hemesh.(Alpha Monitor有两部分,一部分是类似手表的可穿戴设备,另一部分是与之相连的闹钟。 根据倒数第二段“The wearable device monitors body temperature, pulse, and detects movement, falls and more. It works using a gyroscope sensor to detect even the slightest movement and health sensors for pulse and temperature. It works without Wi-Fi or bluetooth and has a range of 1-2k m, according to Hemesh. It can also be connected to an app for children staying far away to monitor their parents’ movements.(这种可穿戴设备可以监测体温、脉搏,并检测运动、跌倒等。 根据第一段“In 2018, when Hemesh Chadalavada was 12 years old, his grandmother forgot to turn off the gas after she made herself a cup of tea. This experience caused Hemesh to invent the “Alpha Monitor”, a device designed for dementia 这一经历促使Hemesh发明了“阿尔法监测器”,这是一种为痴呆症患者设计的设备)”可知,看到祖母忘记关煤气,促使他为痴呆症患者设计设备,说明他是有爱心的,根据第二段“He started creating this device with whatever was at home, with the help of the internet. “The first model I built was a huge box. I learnt how to make a wearable device on the internet by learning which components to use and where I could source them in Hyderabad. I started with a hardware device, after which I learnt coding online and moved to machine learning and data science, to help me perfect my device,” he adds.(在互联网的帮助下,他开始用家里的任何东西创造这个设备。“我做的第一个模型是一个巨大的盒子。我在互联网上学习了如何制作可穿戴设备,学习了使用哪些组件,以及在海德拉巴哪里可以找到这些组件。我从一个硬件设备开始,之后我在网上学习编程,然后转向机器学习和数据科学,以帮助我完善我的设备,”他补充道)”可知,一切都是Hemesh Chadalavada在网上自学并且发明的,所以他是有创造力。故选A项。 C Last week, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres coined a new term. The time of global warming has ended, he announced, and the time of “global boiling” has arrived. You can see why he said it. July was the hottest month on record globally. High temperatures and serious wildfires have swept across the Northern Hemisphere. Oceanic heatwaves are damaging the world’s third-largest coral reef, off Florida. And as the levels of greenhouse gases continue to increase, it means many even hotter summers lie ahead. But critics have strongly disagreed with the phrase. At one level, “global boiling” is clearly an overstatement, but “global warming” is now far too weak a description. Many climate scientists have pushed for the term “global heating” to be used in preference. Similarly, phrases such as “climate crisis” haven’t received enough attention. That’s because many of us still feel we haven’t seen this crisis with our own eyes. But that is changing. In the past few years, extreme weather and related events have struck many countries. Australia’s Black Summer brought wildfires that burned an area the size of the United Kingdom. Germany suffered serious flooding in 2021. The 2022 flood in Pakistan flooded large parts of the country. China has seen both droughts and floods. Terrible droughts have hit the Horn of Africa for many years. India has stopped rice exports due to damage from heavy rain. Critics of climate action often complain about what they see as the overuse of “crisis talk”. If everything is a crisis, nothing is a crisis. When Guterres uses deeply impactful phrases, he’s not inviting us to imagine a Hollywood-style disaster. What he’s hoping is to make people listen — and act — now we can see what climate change looks like. Are there better phrases to describe this? Possibly. Take the challenge yourself: can you think up a brief, correct phrase to cover worsening local- and regional-scale (区域级) droughts, fires, typhoons and floods; damage to crops and food safety; water shortages; existential threats to coral reefs and low-lying communities? You can see how hard it is. 28. What made Guterres use the phrase “global boiling”? A. The reviews from critics. B. The new scientific findings. C. The present serious situation. D. The future course of climate change. 29. Why did such phrases as “climate crisis” fail to attract our attention? A. None of these phrases reflect the truth. B. Fewer crises have happened in recent years. C. Many phrases haven’t been mentioned publicly. D. Certain climate disasters haven’t happened to us. 30. What does the author try to say by using “But that is changing”? A. But climate crises are worsening. B. But several crises will be solved. C. But people will face food shortages. D. But people are taking effective measures. 31. What does the author think of Guterres’ saying “global boiling”? A. It is beyond reality. B. It is just to scare people. C. It is reasonably acceptable. D. It is just to comfort the public 【答案】28. C 29. D 30. A 31. 根据第二段“July was the hottest month on record globally. High temperatures and serious wildfires have swept across the Northern Hemisphere. Oceanic heatwaves are damaging the world’s third-largest coral reef, off Florida. And as the levels of greenhouse gases continue to increase, it means many even hotter summers lie ahead.(七月是有记录以来全球最热的月份。 根据第三段最后两句“Similarly, phrases such as “climate crisis” haven’t received enough attention. That’s because many of us still feel we haven’t seen this crisis with our own eyes.(同样,“气候危机”等短语也没有得到足够的关注。 根据第四段“But that is changing. India has stopped rice exports due to damage from heavy rain.(但这种情况正在改变。 故选A项。 根据文章第六段“When Guterres uses deeply impactful phrases, he’s not inviting us to imagine a Hollywood-style disaster. What he’s hoping is to make people listen — and act — now we can see what climate change looks like.(当古特雷斯使用深刻影响的话语时,他并不是在邀请我们想象好莱坞式的灾难。 D Quantum (量子) computers have been on my mind a lot lately. A friend has been sending me articles on how quantum computers might help solve some of the biggest challenges we face as humans. I’ve also had exchanges with two quantum-computing experts. One is computer scientist Chris Johnson who I see as someone who helps keep the field honest. The other is physicist Philip Taylor. For decades, quantum computing has been little more than a laboratory curiosity. Now, big tech companies have invested in quantum computing, as have many smaller ones. According to Business Weekly, quantum machines could help us “cure cancer, and even take steps to turn climate change in the opposite direction.” This is the sort of hype (炒作) that annoys Johnson. He worries that researchers are making promises they can’t keep. “What’s new,” Johnson wrote, “is that millions of dollars are now potentially available to quantum computing researchers.” As quantum computing attracts more attention and funding, researchers may mislead investors, journalists, the public and, worst of all, themselves about their work’s potential. If researchers can’t keep their promises, excitement might give way to doubt, disappointment and anger, Johnson warns. Lots of other technologies have gone through stages of excitement. But something about quantum computing makes it especially prone to hype, Johnson suggests, perhaps because “‘quantum’ stands for something cool you shouldn’t be able to understand.” And that brings me back to Taylor, who suggested that I read his book Q for Quantum. After I read the book, Taylor patiently answered my questions about it. He also answered my questions about PyQuantum, the firm he co-founded in 2016. Taylor shares Johnson’s concerns about hype, but he says those concerns do not apply to PyQuantum. The company, he says, is closer than any other firm “by a very large margin (幅度)” to building a “useful” quantum computer, one that “solves an impactful problem that we would not have been able to solve otherwise.” He adds, “People will naturally discount my opinions, but I have spent a lot of time quantitatively comparing what we are doing with others.” Could PyQuantum really be leading all the competition “by a wide margin”, as Taylor claims? I don’t know. I’m certainly not going to advise my friend or anyone else to invest in quantum computers. But I trust Taylor, just as I trust Johnson. 32. Regarding Johnson’s concerns, the author feels ________. A. sympathetic B. unconcerned C. skeptical D. overwhelmed 33. What leads to Taylor’s optimism about quantum computing? A. His dominance in physics. B. The competition in the field. C. His confidence in PyQuantum. D. The investment of tech companies. 34. What does the underlined word “prone” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean? A. Open. B. Superb. C. Useful. D. Resistant. 35. Which would be the best title for the passage? A. Is Johnson More Competent Than Taylor? B. Is Quantum Computing Redefining Technology? C. Will Quantum Computers Ever Come into Being? D. Will Quantum Computing Ever Live Up to Its Hype? A 33. C 34. A 35. 根据第三段中“As quantum computing attracts more attention and funding, researchers may mislead investors, journalists, the public and, worst of all, themselves about their work’s potential. If researchers can’t keep their promises, excitement might give way to doubt, disappointment and anger, Johnson warns. Johnson警告说,如果研究人员不能兑现承诺,兴奋可能会让位于怀疑、失望和愤怒)”及根据最后一段中“But I trust Taylor, just as I trust Johnson. 故选A。 根据倒数第二段中“The company, he says, is closer than any other firm “by a very large margin (幅度)” to building a “useful” quantum computer, one that “solves an impactful problem that we would not have been able to solve otherwise.” He adds, “People will naturally discount my opinions, but I have spent a lot of time quantitatively comparing what we are doing with others.” 根据第三段中“But something about quantum computing makes it especially (但是量子计算的某些特性使其变得尤其)”及“to hype, Johnson suggests, perhaps because “‘quantum’ stands for something cool you shouldn’t be able to understand.” 故选A。 通读全文,尤其根据第二段中“Now, big tech companies have invested in quantum computing, as have many smaller ones. According to Business Weekly, quantum machines could help us “cure cancer, and even take steps to turn climate change in the opposite direction. This is the sort of hype (炒作) that annoys Johnson.” 及最后一段“Could PyQuantum really be leading all the competition “by a wide margin”, as Taylor claims I don’t know. I’m certainly not going to advise my friend or anyone else to invest in quantum computers. 由此可知,最佳标题为“Will Quantum Computing Ever Live Up to Its Hype?”。 Why sensitive kids will make the world a better place? His teachers admired his dedication and thirst for knowledge. When he graduated and entered a famous university, he was determined to continue his academic excellence and aimed to secure a scholarship. At university, Lin Fei encountered a challenging course titled “Advanced Physics”, taught by the strict and respected Professor Wang. On the first day of class, Professor Wang warned the students about the course’s difficulty, causing many to drop the course immediately. Lin Fei, however, wasn’t scared; he believed in his ability to tackle any subject. Professor Wang was known for his high expectations and his commitment to pushing students to achieve their best. He often said in class, “You alone must set your own standard of excellence,” a sentence that puzzled Lin Fei, as he had always found school to be easy. The first test arrived, and Lin Fei, overconfident in his abilities, did not prepare as diligently as he should have. He even spent the night before the test watching a movie with friends. The next day, he was shocked to receive a 75. C+, on his test paper. Physics was his strongest subject, and he had never received such a low grade before. He approached Professor Wang, who listened to his arguments and explained that grades were a reflection of effort and understanding. Realizing that his scholarship was now in jeopardy (处于危险境地), Lin Fei decided to turn things around. He understood that this was his last chance to improve his course grade. He began to study with a newfound determination, spending hours each day understanding the complex concepts that had previously eluded (把……难倒) him. He attended every lecture, completed all assignments diligently, and spent additional hours in the library, going over textbooks and solving problems. As the next test approached, Lin Fei felt very calm. He knew he had tried his best. The day after the test, he was excited to find that he had earned an A. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Encouraged by this achievement, Lin Fei redoubled his efforts in other courses as well. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】One possible version: The day after the test, he was excited to find that he had earned an A. He rushed to Professor Wang’s office, eager to share the news. Professor Wang, who seemed to be expecting him, said, “If I had given you the grade you expected initially, you wouldn’t have worked as hard as you did.” Lin Fei was speechless, realizing the wisdom behind Professor Wang’s approach. This experience taught him a valuable lesson about the importance of perseverance and the role of challenges in promoting growth. Encouraged by this achievement, Lin Fei redoubled his efforts in other courses as well. He became more active in class discussions, often sharing his insights and seeking clarification on challenging topics. His classmates, too, noticed the change and began to approach him for help with their studies. Lin Fei, now a role model of academic excellence, realized that setting one’s own standard of excellence meant always trying to do better than before, regardless of past accomplishments. As the term drew to a close, he was happily awarded the scholarship he had always dreamed of. 词汇激活 行为类 ①冲,奔:rush/run/dash ②意识到:realize/recognize ③寻求:seek/look for/search for ④注意到:notice/observe 情绪类 ①急切的:eager/anxious/impatient ②开心地:happily/merrily/cheerfully 【点睛】[高分句型1] Lin Fei, now a role model of academic excellence, realized that setting one’s own standard of excellence meant always trying to do better than before, regardless of past accomplishments. B In 2018, when Hemesh Chadalavada was 12 years old, his grandmother forgot to turn off the gas after she made herself a cup of tea. C Last week, United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres coined a new term. Possibly. Take the challenge yourself: can you think up a brief, correct phrase to cover worsening local- and regional-scale (区域级的) droughts, fires, typhoons and floods; damage to crops and food safety; water shortages; existential threats to coral reefs and low-lying communities? D. It is just to comfort the public D Quantum (量子) computers have been on my mind a lot lately. 32. Regarding Johnson’s concerns the author feels ________. A. sympathetic B. unconcerned C. skeptical D. overwhelmed 33. What leads to Taylor’s optimism about quantum computing? A. His dominance in physics. B. The competition in the field. C. His confidence in PyQuantum. D. The investment of tech companies. 34. What does the underlined word “prone” in Paragraph 3 most probably mean? A. Open. B. Superb. C. Useful. D. Resistant. 35 Which would be the best title for the passage? A. Is Johnson More Competent Than Taylor? B. Is Quantum Computing Redefining Technology? C. Will Quantum Computers Ever Come into Being? D. Will Quantum Computing Ever Live Up to Its Hype? Why sensitive kids will make the world a better place? ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $$
