A few years ago, I was leaving the dog shelter where I worked only to find a baby goat at the end of the driveway. The shelter’s owners are known as animal rescuers, and I figured someone had abandoned him over the fence. The kid was visibly nervous but stood perfectly still as I approached.
I’m an animal lover and I’ve brought home dogs, cats, horses, and chickens, but never a goat. The tiny kid was too adorable to resist. I named him Quincy, and with the help of some experienced friends, bottle-fed him in my bathroom.
Quincy proved to be quite sharp-witted. When he was about a week old, I knocked on the bathroom floor and said “lie down”. I was astonished when he dropped down. I was even more amazed when he did it three times in a row.
A quick study! Quincy learned to lie down, bow, and turn in a circle in no time. He is house-trained, jumps in the back of my SUV when I say “load up”, and spends the day wandering with my dogs, whom he considers his fellow goats. He knows the name of everything I feed him, and even joins us for trips to the dog park.
I love to train animals and often take my dogs to shows where they can perform their tricks. Quincy did his first show when he was just six weeks old. He knew only a few tricks then, but he did them perfectly and never misbehaved or got nervous in front of the crowd.
Now he has a whole inventory (清单): he’ll come when called, walk on a string, wave, smile for the camera (“Say cheese!”), and more. Quincy and my dogs perform regularly at schools, nursing homes, and charity events. Quincy can even “read” his tricks off cards, which always earns the most applause.
It’s hard to believe that the baby goat nobody wanted turned out to be one of the smartest and most good-natured animals I’ve ever had. He’s by far the sharpest of my bunch—just don’t tell the dogs!
24. Why did the author decide to adopt the goat?
A. It touched his heart. B. He could only find a goat.
C. A goat was always his favorite. D. Some experienced friends convinced him.
25. What does the underlined word in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Brave. B. Gentle. C. Innocent. D. Intelligent.
26. How does the author present the baby goat’s ability?
A. By citing figures. B. By listing examples.
C. By making a comparison. D. By drawing a diagram.
27. Which words can best describe the author?
A. Generous and modest. B. Cautious and smart.
C. Humorous and warm-hearted. D. Optimistic and creative.
C
Imagine a potter(陶工), sitting quietly on a small chair, holding soft clay(黏土) in his hands, sculpting it as he spins the pottery wheel. The clay’s fate is completely in the potter’s hands. A skilled potter would turn it into a beautiful container but the same clay, when handed to a green hand, may be ruined.
Just as the potter shapes clay into containers, our lives are shaped by the hands of our surroundings — the people we meet, the places we go, each conversation and every experience shape us into who we are.
Jim Rohn once said, “You are the average of the top 5 people you spend your most time with.” Now think about the company you keep — the ones who share your joys, wipe tears away and share your dreams. Every part of you is nothing but their average.
Back in middle school, most of my classmates didn’t quite match my level of intellect (智力). More often than not, I stood out from them; although it felt really satisfying, it somehow lacked the challenge I desired. It wasn’t until I started high school that I found what I was searching for.
High school did feel frightening at first. I found myself surrounded by brighter, wiser and prettier faces than I ever imagined. I felt inadequate compared to them, but it was in that discomfort that I found growth.
To grow, you got to be with people who stand out in areas where you fall short, those who inspire you to learn and improve. Just as tough competition pushes athletes to stand out, great people bring out the best in you. So, find your people, people who’ll inspire and uplift you, who have qualities you want. They wouldn’t simply hand you success but force you to lift yourself higher and higher.
But if negativity surrounds you, don’t expect positive changes in your life. If you’re always with people who see nothing but reasons why things can’t be done, then that will also become your reality.
28. What does the author compare our surroundings to?
A. The potter. B. The clay. C. The pottery wheel. D. The container.
29. Which of the following best describes the author’s high school?
A. Dull. B. Painful. C. Rewarding. D. Thrilling.
30. Who does the author suggest readers be with in order to grow?
A. People who motivate them to advance.
B. People who match their level of intellect.
C. People who work in the same area as they do.
D. People who share happiness and sorrow with them.
31. What is the message conveyed in the text?
A. Toughness leads to success. B. Positivity outweighs hard work.
C. Birds of a feather gather together. D. Success loves a successful company.
D
Protecting marine (海洋的) animals is crucial for the health and balance of our oceans, since they play a vital role in the marine ecosystem, serving as food sources; contributing to nutrient cycling, and maintaining biodiversity. However, human activities such as overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution pose significant threats to these creatures, so effective conservation measures should be taken to change for the better.
Most people know about the friendly voices of dolphins and the blue songs of humpback whales, but what about the hundreds of thousands of other creatures that live in the sea? Scientists estimate that over 100 types of marine mammals, as well as 1,000 different fish species, generate sounds. Additionally, many sea creatures produce passive sounds while eating, swimming, or crawling along the sea floor. A group of international scientists is now joining forces to create a library of all the unique sounds that animals living under the sea make.
The Global Library of Underwater Biological Sounds, or GLUBS, will be an open-source collection of the signature sounds created by sea creatures. The team will use existing libraries of sea sounds and expand upon these to create a more comprehensive collection. The platform will also include AI algorithms (算法) that can detect and classify different sounds, which will allow scientists to produce species distribution maps.
When asked about the motivation for this project, Miles Parsons, one of the project’s leaders, pointed to the worldwide decline in biodiversity. By examining the sounds coming from bodies of water, scientists can monitor the changes in the distribution and diversity of various ecosystems. Studying the sounds could also be used to identify new species. Parsons explained that many of the world’s most extensive habitats are aquatic (水生的). GLUBS could be a great resource in helping preserve water species around the world.
32. Which of the following is true about sea creature sounds?
A. It is difficult to distinguish eating sounds.
B. Only 1,000 different fish species produce sounds.
C. Little is known about the sounds of marine animals.
D. Scientists don’t have to create sound libraries from zero.
33. How will AI be used in the library?
A. It will be used to create new aquatic sounds.
B It is needed when scientists distribute maps.
C. It helps manage the number of species in the sea.
D. It can help sort out the different collected sounds.
34. What reason did Miles Parsons give for creating the sound library?
A. Biodiversity is decreasing around the world.
B. It is difficult to record the sound s of sea creatures.
C. We should keep the balance and preserve the ocean.
D. Fishermen could use the sounds to help them catch more fish.
35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
A. A scientific research assisted by AI.
B. Sounds Created by the Marine Animals.
C. GLUBS: A Sound Library of the Sea.
D. Sharp decline in global biodiversity.

Quincy learned to lie down bow, and turn in a circle in no time.

【25题详解】
词义猜测题。根据文章第三段划线词后“When he was about a week old, I knocked on the bathroom floor and said ‘lie down’. I was astonished when he dropped down. I was even more amazed when he did it three times in a row.(当他大约一周大的时候,我敲了敲浴室的地板,说“躺下”。他卧倒时我很惊讶。当他连续做了三次时,我更加惊讶。)”可知,大约一周大的小羊听懂了作者的指令,并作出指令动作,这说明这只小羊很聪明。由此可推知,“sharp-witted”是“聪明的”含义。故选D项。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。从文章第四段内容“A quick study! Quincy learned to lie down, bow, and turn in a circle in no time. He is house-trained, jumps in the back of my SUV when I say ‘load up’,(快速学习!Quincy很快学会了躺下、鞠躬和转圈。“他”受过家庭训练,当我说“上车”时,“他”会跳到我SUV的后面)”以及第六段“Now he has a whole inventory (清单): he’ll come when called, walk on a string, wave, smile for the camera (“Say cheese!”), and more.
【答案】28. A 29. C 30. A 31. D

【29题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第五段“High school did feel frightening at first. I found myself surrounded by brighter, wiser and prettier faces than I ever imagined. I felt inadequate compared to them, but it was in that discomfort that I found growth. (一开始高中确实令人害怕。我发现周围的人比我想象的更聪明、更聪慧、更漂亮。相比之下,我感到自惭形秽,但正是在这种不适中,我找到了成长)”可知,作者面对更优秀的同伴,初时有压力但随后通过竞争实现了成长,因此可以用“rewarding”(回报丰厚的、有收获的)来描述作者的高中体验。故选C。
【30题详解】
细节理解题。根据第六段“To grow, you got to be with people who stand out in areas where you fall short, those who inspire you to learn and improve. (要成长,你必须与那些在你不足的领域中脱颖而出的人在一起,他们会激励你学习和提高)”可知,作者建议与能够激励我们进步的人在一起,这样才能促成自我成长。故选A。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第六段“So, find your people, people who’ll inspire and uplift you, who have qualities you want. They wouldn’t simply hand you success but force you to lift yourself higher and higher..(所以,找到你的人,那些会激励和提升你的人,他们拥有你想要的品质。他们不会直接把成功交到你手里,而是迫使你不断提升自己)”以及全文核心思想强调与优秀的人为伍,以提升自我。故“Success loves a successful company (成功者喜欢结交成功者)”最能概括文章主旨。故选D。

B. It is needed when scientists distribute maps.
【答案】32. D 33. D 34. A 35. C
