Last summer, Gan Ching Hwee of Singapore realized one of her biggest dreams. The swimmer competed at the Olympic Games in Paris, France for her country on an international stage.
Gan is now studying at Indiana University in Bloomington. At the Summer Olympic Games, the 21-year-old broke Singapore’s national record in both the women’s 1,500-meter and 800-meter freestyle preliminary (预赛) races. Although her performances did not win her a medal, Gan was proud that she competed for Singapore so well. “If you can dream it, you can do it,” she said. Gan started to swim at the age of five. She soon realized that she had a natural ability in the sport. Her parents encouraged her. They changed their schedules to take her to practices and cheered her on at competitions.
For many years, Gan trained 20 hours a week while finishing schoolwork. “With self-control ability,” she said, “I slowly got used to my swim schedule and school workload. My teachers really meant a lot to me.”
What surprised Gan the most, she said, was the discovery of her own resilience (韧性). Swimming requires mental and physical strength. She faced tough training classes, injuries, and losses in competitions. Still, she fought on.
Chia, her coach of 10 years, is proud of her achievements. “All young children — swimmers, or not — should have a great dream and target,” he said. “They should all have great confidence and give their absolute best in all they do. That way, there will always be successes to look back upon.”
The Olympic swimmer plans to continue competing. Her experiences at the Summer Games inspired her to train even harder. “Facing my competitors inspired me to swim faster instead of seeing them as an extra pressure,” she said. For Gan, it’s all about swimming well to honor those who have supported her, and doing her best for Singapore.
4. How did Gan perform at the Olympic Games in Paris?
A. She got an Olympic medal. B. She made it to the swimming final.
C. She set new records for her country. D. She failed to realize her dream.
5. What can be learned about Gan’s school life?
A. She suffered more than she had imagined.
B. She focused on developing her resilience.
C. She bore much pressure from her teachers.
D. She managed to balance swimming and study.
6. What is Gan’s main goal in swimming?
A. To win more medals. B. To make herself more popular.
C. To repay her supporters. D. To become a swimming coach.
7. Which words can best describe Gan?
A. Determined and talented. B. Frank and energetic.
C. Curious and hardworking. D. Supportive and understanding.

Play therapy (疗法) is a method that comes from the field of psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, where a trained therapist watches a child play and follows their lead, according to Medical News Today. This method is based on the idea that children communicate and share information about themselves unwittingly through play.
Play helps children learn how to interact (互动) with the world and develop skills, making it a natural way for them to express themselves. During play, a child might act out their feelings either directly or through symbols, giving the therapist a better understanding of their feelings. Playing together creates a safe and supportive environment, allowing people to express themselves more freely.
Catherine Price, the author of The Power of Fun: How to Feel Alive Again, says, “Playfulness is a way of thinking and doing things that can lead to a more light-hearted and enjoyable daily experience, and it can be learned by anyone. The benefits are more than expected.” Fun, considered as a combination (结合) of playfulness, connection, and flow, can reduce stress, better relationships, help people relax, and strengthen creativity. These qualities can also lower the risk of heart disease, strokes, and cancer.
Even though fun may appear to be an impractical focus, it actually does good to one’s health. Price adds, “It has the opposite effect on your body compared to feeling lonely or stressed.”
Playfulness grows when people stop being too strict with themselves and are fully focusing on the present moment. To become more open and flexible, ask yourself, “What’s the worst that could happen?” This simple question can help you develop a playful mindset (心态), one that accepts the silly and allows you to laugh at yourself. When you no longer weigh yourself down with unrealistic demands and unnecessary stress, you open up more room for happiness. You’ll never that life becomes more enjoyable, and you’re more likely to experience moments that make truly special.
8. What does the underlined word “unwittingly” in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Unknowingly. B. Mistakenly. C. Unusually. D. Purposefully.
9. What’s the role of play in play therapy?
A. Teaching basic skills. B. Helping express feelings.
C. Building social relationships. D. Training physical strength.
10. What is one of the benefits of fun mentioned in the text?
A. It strengthens problem-solving skills. B. It helps develop playfulness.
C. It encourages people to take more risks. D. It reduces the risk of health problems.

Whales are the largest mammals (哺乳动物) and are found in waters around the world Numbers of whales are recovering after many countries have stopped whale catching and killing and that is something worth celebrating.
But there are still some types of whales that are considered endangered (濒危的). And human activities are still responsible for whale deaths. Ship crashes are killing 20,000 whales yearly and this is a worldwide problem. For every killed whale that was found, 10 more are believed to have died unrecorded.
Ocean traffic is supposed to grow by at least 240 percent by 2050 and that will make the whale crashes much more likely. But a sound technology, Whale Safe, was just put into use across North American waters and it can help keep whales safe from ships.
It was introduced on the West Coast of the US in 2020 after an increase in whale crashes. By warning ships to watch out for nearby whales, it makes more ships observe the speed limit, reducing the number of whale deaths. Whale Safe listens for whale sounds by using buoys (浮标) that separate whale calls from ocean background noise.
When a whale is found, this information is sent to nearby boats, warning them to slow down. This has worked well. In California’s Santa Barbara channel, a place known for high crash possibilities, the number of ships that slowed down went from 46 percent in 2019 to 63.5 percent in 2023.
This technology can protect more endangered whales. One of the endangered North American whales is the right whale. In fact, there are only about 370 left. With so few left, researchers have to monitor (监测) the waters of the entire East Coast of the US, from Maine to Florida. The technology is also being used in other places. In 2022, Chile fixed its first sound buoy to warn ships of nearby humpback, southern-right, and blue whales. Greece is testing the technology to protect sperm whales.
12. What does the text say about the killed whales in the sea?
A. They affect the safety of ships. B. Their actual number is much larger.
C. They receive wide attention. D. Their death is mainly caused by pollution.
13. How does Whale Safe work?
A. It makes ships heard. B. It warns ships of whales.
C. It reduces ocean traffic worldwide. D. It sets up the activity area for whales.
14. What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. More waters should be monitored.
B. Whales are in great need of protection.
C. Many types of whales are becoming endangered.
D. Whale Safe is widely used to protect more whales.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Sound Technology Helps Keep Whales Safe
B. Human Activities Are Still Threatening Whales
C. The Population of Whales Is Increasing Slowly
D. Shipping Is Harming Endangered Whales
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. D 15. A

【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“By warning ships to watch out for nearby whales, it makes more ships observe the speed limit, reducing the number of whale deaths. Whale Safe listens for whale sounds by using buoys (浮标) that separate whale calls from ocean background noise.(通过警告船只注意附近的鲸鱼,它使更多的船只遵守限速规定,减少了鲸鱼死亡的数量。Whale Safe系统通过使用浮标来监听鲸鱼的声音,这些浮标将鲸鱼的叫声与海洋背景噪音区分开来)”可知,Whale Safe系统通过警告船只注意鲸鱼来发挥作用。故选B。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“This technology can protect more endangered whales. Greece is testing the technology to protect sperm whales.(这项技术可以保护更多濒危的鲸鱼。

Dear Ryan,
I’m writing to share one of my experiences of using body language.
Last week, during a school g group project discussion, I was initially nervous. However, I unconsciously made frequent eye contact, which made me seem engaged and confident. While presenting ideas, I used open-handed gestures, like spreading my hands wide and holding up my fist. This not only clarified my points but also made me seem more energetic.
It’s amazing how powerful body language can be. It effectively bridges the gap between my words and others’ understanding, allowing me to better convey emotions and intentions. It gives me a sense of control in social interactions, putting me completely at ease.
Yours.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It rained heavily recently and it brought a lot trouble to people, especially the homeless people living on the streets. I have a habit of keeping extra umbrellas and sleeping bags in my car in case I have to spare one, though I’m not wealthy. And I’m glad I had some of these things the other day during a rainstorm.
My little daughter really wanted to get an ice cream. I thought for a bit about where to pick one up as there are several places to choose from. My eldest son was under the weather at home and also wanted one. I stopped by a location in the middle of town since I still had other things to run and it seemed like the right place.
Upon pulling in, I saw a woman under a big blue umbrella with a big dog. She was sitting on the ground on a wet-looking blanket(毯子) and had a backpack with her. There was also a sign that was not clear from my car. I decided it didn’t matter what the sign said and I could spare at least a dollar. I held my daughter closely and when we finally went to the lady, I gave her the dollar. She said in a low voice, “$29 more and I can get a hotel room tonight.” I wished her luck and went inside to get the ice creams.
As I left, I saw the lady again and asked her if she needed a sleeping bag. She nodded yes and said that would be great. So I took a women’s sleeping bag that was in amazing condition and handed it to her. I also offered her an umbrella for her things and her dog. She was happy to take my spare umbrella. I told her I wish I could have done more but I had no way before walking away.
注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When I got into my car, I found I had exactly $29 that she needed.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Having watched all this, my daughter asked how we could help the woman further.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 When I got into my car, I found I had exactly $29 that she needed. Without a second thought, I quickly got out of the car and rushed back to the woman. She looked up in surprise as I approached her again. I held out the money to her and said, “Here, this is the $29 you need for the hotel room tonight.” Her eyes widened in disbelief, and were then filled with tears of thankfulness. She took the money with a trembling hand and thanked me over and over again. She told me that she had been struggling for days, and this money would truly be a lifesaver for her and her dog.
Having watched all this, my daughter asked how we could help the woman further. Inspired by her kind heart, I immediately called some friends and neighbors, explaining the woman’s situation. In no time, we collected a pile of clothes, canned food and other daily necessities. When we presented these to the woman, her eyes sparkled with gratitude. This small act taught my daughter that kindness isn’t about how much you have, but about how much you’re willing to share. It’s these simple acts that can warm hearts and make the world a better place.

What surprised Gan the most she said, was the discovery of her own resilience (韧性).

C. To repay her supporters. D. To become a swimming coach.
7. Which words can best describe Gan?

11. How can one develop a playful mindset?
A. By avoiding making silly decisions. B. By setting detailed requirements.
C. By letting go of pressure. D. By going after perfectionism.

C It reduces ocean traffic worldwide. D. It sets up the activity area for whales.
14. What does the author intend to tell us in the last paragraph?
A. More waters should be monitored.
B. Whales are in great need of protection.
C. Many types of whales are becoming endangered.
D. Whale Safe is widely used to protect more whales.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. Sound Technology Helps Keep Whales Safe
B. Human Activities Are Still Threatening Whales
C. The Population of Whales Is Increasing Slowly
D. Shipping Is Harming Endangered Whales

There are several terms experts use to describe computer systems in the field of artificial intelligence (人工智能). ____16____ The following are some of those on the list.
Artificial intelligence (AI)
AI is the copy of human intelligence in machines programmed to think, learn, and decide. ____17____ During the process, ideas from many fields including computing, mathematics, languages, psychology, and others are used. Currently, the technology is being used heavily for looking into health issues, translating human languages, and predicting problems in machine tools and self-driving cars.
Machine learning
Machine learning is one method that researchers have used in their efforts to produce artificial intelligence. It lets computers learn from data without being directly programmed on what results to produce. There are three types: supervised learning, unsupervised learning, and reinforcement learning. In recent years, the field of neural networks (神经网络) has given important results. In a neural network, some connections are strengthened. ____18____
Deep learning
Deep learning owes its s its name to its use of many layers (层) of neural networks. Data is examined by each layer in turn at growing levels of abstraction (抽象). Geoffrey Hinton is regarded as the developer of deep learning. ____19____ Francis Bach, head of a statistical learning laboratory, said, “The more layers you have, the more complex behavior can become, and the easier it is to learn a desired behavior efficiently.”
Artificial general intelligence
____20____ It suggests the unrealized dream of a machine able to reproduce all human processes of human thinking. People who push the idea include OpenAI chief Sam Altman and his competitors at Anthropic. They consider such a system to be within reach. But some researchers say that LLM technology has important limits, including its ability to reason.
A. This system is able to write long papers.
B. It allows the computer to learn for itself.
C. An organization recently made a list of such terms.
D. He received the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics for it.
E. Others are weakened as the system learns and makes changes.
F. Artificial general intelligence is one of the big goals of the whole AI field.
G. Its main feature is taking in large amounts of data and then processing it.

注意:1.续写词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
When I got into my car, I found I had exactly $29 that she needed.
