I recently visited my friend Lydia and saw her new puppy. It was really cute. Later that day, as I helped Skyler climb the stairs, I thought about how you didn’t consider this level of extra (额外的) care when you brought home a furry (毛茸茸的) new family member.
When we got Skyler, my husband and I had only been married for a few years. She was only one month old. She was house-trained in no time. We took her on hikes, and we were amazed by her energy. If we took off running toward the end of a field, she would have already crossed the finish line before we had even made it halfway. On walks, whenever we turned the corner onto our street, she pulled hard on her leash (狗链) to race toward home. She had made us laugh endlessly and had comforted me countless times.
But it is hard. It is sad to see this once-strong dog have a difficult time walking up the front steps. Now, she is 14 years old. Over the past few years, we have had to give up on taking certain family trips because we wouldn’t have been able to take good care of Skyler. My husband spends hours each week making special food for her that helps to control her heart problems. And I always have to sit in the back of the car whenever she travels with us because Skyler needs help getting comfortable, even though I may get carsick as a result.
Though I sometimes complain (抱怨) about old Skyler, I know she has taught me about love. Dogs give us unconditional love. ____________
36. When did Skyler become the writer’s family member?
A. Before the writer got married. B. When Skyler was one month old.
C. After the writer visited Lydia. D. When Skyler was 14 years old.

C. Skyler was honest to the family. D. Skyler brought great fun to the family.
38. What “extra care” did the writer’s husband give to old Skyler?
A. Taking her for a walk. B. Taking her to see a doctor.
C. Preparing special food for her. D. Sitting with her in the back of the car.
39. Which is the best to fill in “________” at the end of the text?

C. What we can do is to keep many dogs. D. They try their best to become our pride.
40. Which is the best title of the text?
A. Living With an Old Dog B. Travelling With a Dog

Some Europeans may find it hard to believe that the Earth broke a new temperature record. While parts of America, Asia, the Middle East, and even Southern Europe suffered deadly heatwaves, many European countries experienced record rainfall. This made summer feel unusually cool. Temperatures in parts of Western Europe was around or below average (平均水平) in June 2024.
But studies show that worldwide, it was very hot. Global (全球的) average air temperatures broke records on two consecutive (连续不断的) days. On July 22nd, 2024, air temperatures reached 17.16°C, breaking the record of 17.09°C set just one day before. The record of 17.08℃ had stood since only July 6th, 2023.
A major influence on the Earth’s temperature is E1 Niño—a natural phenomenon (现象) that affects weather patterns worldwide. El Niño led to the record-breaking temperatures of 2023 and has only recently come to an end. One of the areas driving up the global average temperature is Antarctica. Temperatures around the South Pole are much higher than usual.
One record seldom comes alone. In 2023, global temperatures reached a new high for four consecutive days. According to reports from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), in June 2016, the Earth’s land and ocean surfaces were warmer than ever before for 14 consecutive months. This was the 378th consecutive month where temperatures were higher than the average for the 20th century.
On Oct 28th, 2024, the World Meteorological Organization put out a report that shows greenhouse gas levels reached a new record high in 2023. This means the Earth will face rising temperatures for many years to come. It’s a big problem that needs to be addressed so that we can protect our planet for the future.
41.How do some Europeans feel about the new temperature record?
A.Worried. B.Hopeful. C.Interested. D.Doubtful.
42.How long did the record of 17.08℃ last?
A.Less than a week. B.About a month.
C.About 10 months. D.About a year.
43.What does the passage show about El Niño?
A.It never ends. B.It has just gone.
C.It will start soon. D.It is getting stronger.
44.What can we know from the passage?
A.Both NOAA and GISS have a long history.
B.The South Pole is much hotter than it usually is.
C.Many countries are working together to protect the Earth.
D.The temperature in 2024 is much higher than that of 2023.
45.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To compare hot years. B.To explain El Niño effects.
C.To report global temperatures. D.To describe Europe’s weather.

January 20, 2025, a Chinese tech company named DeepSeek made a new AI called DeepSeek-R1. This smart program can solve math problems, write code (代码), and answer questions like top models such as OpenAI’s GPT-4o, but it costs much less to build. The team spent only $5.58 million (1/70 of OpenAI’s cost) and used 2,048 computer chips (芯片) for two months to make it. This shows that good ideas can beat big money.
DeepSeek-R1 learns by trying many times and getting better, like how students practice maths. Other AIs need lots of prepared examples, but R1 improves by itself. In a global math test, it got 79.8% right, a little higher than OpenAI’s model. A simple version (版本) of R1 can even run on low-cost computers, helping schools and small companies.
DeepSeek-R1 is free to use and change. On its first day online, over 19,000 programmers worldwide started projects to study it. A German scientist said experiments with R1 cost $10 instead of $300 with other AIs. Even Meta (a famous U.S. tech company) top scientist said, “This kind of free AI could change the world.”
U.S. tech companies are worried. Meta planed to spend $65 billion more on AI research. Experts said China was catching up fast. A report in Nature magazine called R1 a “big step forward”, confirming that smart ideas beat expensive tools.
As a DeepSeek engineer said, “We want AI to be a friend, not something only rich people can use.” With R1, China shows the world that great things come from new ideas and hard work, not just money.
46.How much did it cost to build DeepSeek-R1?
A.$5.58 million. B.$65 billion. C.$10. D.$300.
47.What can we learn about DeepSeek-R1 from paragraph 2?
A.It needs programmers to fix mistakes. B.It becomes better through practice.
C.It copies answers from other AIs. D.It only works with expensive tools.
48.Why did Meta plan to spend more money on AI research?
A.To help Chinese companies. B.To build more computer chips.
C.To compete with DeepSeek-R1. D.To hire German scientists.
49.What does the underlined word “confirming” mean in paragraph 5?
A.Proving. B.Exploring. C.Refusing. D.Connecting.
50.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Competition between GPT-4o and DeepSeek-R1
B.Comparison of Chinese and American AI Models
C.Appearance of Chinese AI Model DeepSeek-R1
D.Disadvantages of Chinese AI Model DeepSeek-R1

Look at the picture. Do you know what the girl and the boy are doing? They are throwing two baby puffins (海鹦) off a cliff (悬崖). You may not understand why they are doing this. In fact, they are trying to save the baby puffins.
Puffins are the most common birds on the Westman Islands in Iceland. Different from most sea birds, they are able to go under water to 60 meters deep to catch fish. Each spring, they lay eggs in burrows (洞穴) on cliffs. 40 days later, they will fly back to the sea, leaving the young there. Baby puffins would spend about six weeks in the burrows alone before they’re ready to fly and take to the sea.
In the past, young puffins could easily find the sea by following the light of the moon. But now, bright lights of the city often make them lose their way. Many of them end up flying into the town. However, it’s difficult for young puffins to find food in the town, so they may lose their lives there.
That’s why people on the Westman Islands have decided to help those young puffins. In late summer, when young puffins leave their burrows, local people often go out to look for the lost puffins at night. If they find one, they would pick it up and put it in a box. The next day, they would take it to the cliff and throw it off. In this way, young puffins can fly safely toward their new home for the next few years.
The unusual tradition also helps make sure the puffins will be back to their burrows another year. Puffins lay one egg each year at most, so the help from the people on the Westman Islands is important to puffins.
56.When do puffins lay eggs in burrows on cliffs?
57.How long would baby puffins stay in the burrow alone?
58.Can young puffins find the sea easily now?
59.Why do many young puffins lose their lives in the town?

Walking and biking are also good ways to reduce greenhouse gases. If the destination is a bit far, we can take public transportation.
