Marathons just weren't doing it for Preet Chandi. She wanted more.
“I knew for a while I wanted to do something big,I just didn't know what that was going to be,”Chandi said.“At some point, somebody mentioned Antarctica to me.” Skiing through Antarctica would require Chandi—a 33yearold British Army officer from England—to learn new skills. After two years of training,Chandi became the first woman of color to complete a solo (单独的) expedition in Antarctica in January 2022.But she went even farther. In 2023,Chandi completed a 70day,922mile solo expedition through Antarctica. It is said that her effort set a new record for the longest unassisted polar expedition.
Chandi was never the fastest or strongest athlete growing up,she said. But she liked to see how far she could push her body.Chandi spent years training for the Antarctica trips. But she was out of her element. When she first contacted a company that arranges Antarctic expeditions, they said she lacked the experience to attempt one.She knew she needed to get stronger.A solo trip meant pulling a 220pound sled (雪橇).She started training by pulling tires (轮胎).She planned a shorter,40day expedition to the South Pole and back to prove she could do it,and got the okay. She successfully completed it.She then prepared for the real deal.
On November 14,she set off again.Things were tougher this time.Seasonal changes led to softer snow, which made the sled feel heavier.Winds blew the snow into wavelike hills that tipped the sled, forcing Chandi to stop and flip the 220pound load back upright. She set out moving 15 hours a day and sleeping fivehour nights. But it wasn't enough.Amid the difficult conditions,Chandi fell behind her schedule. She started skiing 20 to 24 hours at a time with 7 hours of sleep between. In the end,she had to stop just short of her goal. But she knows she pushed herself to the limit.
After 70 days, she finished her solo expedition and finally returned home, satisfied.“I don't necessarily have any plans at the moment,”Chandi said.“But ...I'm already feeling restless.”

Located at the western end of the Himalayas and the northern tip of Pakistan, the region of GilgitBaltistan is one of the world's most inaccessible natural places. It also has “an extraordinarily rich cultural landscape”,says Sam Dalrymple in Condé Nast Traveller, having often resisted conquest (征服) by neighbouring empires, while absorbing their influence over the thousands of years along with the other benefits of Silk Road trade.Known to ancient Chinese geographers as the Xizang of the Apricots,it is a splendid land of snow leopards and brown bears. It is dotted with old palaces and ancient temples. It has often been closed to outsiders in recent decades, but it is now open to visitors once more.
Many locals claim that their inclusive and open society of this region inspired the lost city of ShangriLa in James Hilton's popular 1933 novel Lost Horizon. The district of Hunza, for instance,is the best in education in Pakistan, with a relatively high level of women's empowerment.Indeed an allfemale team of woodworkers and designers helped restore the Serena Altit Fort Residence,a 1,000yearold building that is one of three beautiful palace hotels that belong to the Serena group in GilgitBaltistan. It overlooks the old walled city of Karimabad,Hunza's capital,in a beautiful valley where the fresh air is combined with the flavor of jasmine blossom (茉莉花) and most new houses are still built in the traditional, woodenframed style.
Driving southwards past the city of Gilgit, you enter into the Indus Gorge and the green valleys give way to a “dry moonscape”.To the east lies Baltistan,a rough region where there are few smooth roads and an ancient language of Tibetan is spoken and yak (牦牛) meat is widely served. It is here that Serena's other two palace hotels are to be found,in Khaplu and Shigar, not far from K2,the world's secondhighest peak.

(2024·南昌检测)Not every architectural landmark is grand in scale, with splendid decorations,or amazing colors.Suzhou Gardens may just be the opposite.
When a group of monks during the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) first constructed Lion Grove Garden, they may have just wanted to enjoy a quiet place, hidden away from urban noise, while in the following centuries, this charming garden—most notable for its waterside rockeries resembling the shape of lions—has attracted a constant stream of celebrity guests, who have left a long list of poems, paintings and historical anecdotes (轶事).
In recent years, nine of the bestknown classical gardens of Suzhou, including Lion Grove Garden,Humble Administrator's Garden and Great Wave Pavilion, were registered into the World Heritage List.As UNESCO remarks,“Classical Chinese garden design, which seeks to recreate natural landscapes in miniature (缩略图),is nowhere better illustrated than in the nine gardens, which reflect the profound natural beauty in Chinese culture and inspire people to pursue harmony with the world.”
Nowadays, relevant administrations have been trying to restore the historical landscapes of Suzhou's classical gardens.Consequently, last year,a new project was launched allowing tourists in small groups to reserve places to enter the garden in the early morning before the regular opening time.Their visit ended with them completing the last step in making a traditional folding fan, adding a poem about the garden on its surface. The experience was also regarded as a way to help people understand the wisdom, elegance and philosophical worldview of the ancient Chinese literati (文人).
The delicate beauty of the gardens still flows via the canals that snake across Suzhou.Hardly felt, their strength in shaping the city's character seems to last forever.

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Several years ago,I sat in my firstgrade classroom. The loudspeaker in the classroom came on,calling me to the principal's (校长的) office. The PRINCIPAL'S office! As I walked to the office,my sixyearold little life flashed before my eyes. What did I do?
I was a shy kid.I hated to be noticed or singled out.For me,being called to the principal's office was a bad dream come to life.My blackandwhite shoes scraped (蹭着) the floor as I walked ever so slowly to the office.
“Diane, the principal is not ready for you yet. Please have a seat,” said the school secretary.
I climbed up onto the sofa and settled as low as I could into the cushions (垫子).After a while, the secretary told me to go in.
I pushed open the heavy door.It was worse than I thought.Seated in front of the principal's desk were my parents.I wouldn't learn the real reason why they were there until years later.
My father walked straight over to me.He held plenty of my drawings, and asked why I only used a black crayon when I drew.I couldn't speak. All I could do was shrug (耸肩)my bony shoulders. My father then asked me to show him my desk.
We returned to my classroom. It was break time so all my classmates were out on the playground.I nervously pointed to my wooden desk.My father pulled out my crayon box.He emptied the contents into his hand.Only one small piece of a crayon rested in his hand—it was black. My father asked where the rest of my crayons were.I quietly explained that I'd given all the other crayons to friends.I'd been sharing like my parents had taught me.
My father let out a deep controlled breath,“You were sharing.” I nodded my head.I was too afraid to admit that I only had one crayon.I was too timid (胆小的) to ask for my “shared” crayons back.Because I didn't stand up for myself, others assumed the worst.

【参考范文】
I looked at my father, then at the principal—both their faces were red. After a moment of awkward silence, the principal allowed me to join my classmates for the break.I waved goodbye to my parents. It was not until years later that I learned my father's face was red due to anger and the principal's was red due to embarrassment. The principal, upon seeing all my artwork done in black crayon, assumed that I had deep emotional issues. To him,my crayon choice reflected my “dark nature”.He had called my parents in to discuss “my problem”.
That night,my father had a heartfelt conversation with me about the difference between “sharing” and “giving”.He explained despite the fact that it's important to be kind to others,it's equally important to recognize and value our own happiness and wellbeing. He stressed that I shouldn't be afraid to speak up for myself and stand on what is rightfully mine. With a gentle tone,he handed me two new boxes of crayons, making it clear that one box was meant for me and me alone. It was a good lesson, and I understood that I could be both generous and protective of my own needs.
