C.To become a Hollywood star. 20.What did the authority originally think of Lamarr and Antheil’s idea? A.Costly. B.Useful. C.Impractical. 【答案】18.C 19.A 20.C 【原文】 M: Inventors’ Day on November 9th is celebrated in German-speaking countries in honor of the birthday of Hedy Lamarr, the Austrian American actress who was also a self-taught inventor. Born in Vienna in 1914, Lamarr later became an American citizen and a famous Hollywood star in the 1930s and 1940s. She had a remarkable mind for technology; during World War II, she teamed up with composer George Antheil to develop a communication system designed to prevent enemy forces from jamming a kind of radio-guided weapon. Their invention later influenced the spread of the technologies used in secure wireless communications such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and GPS. Although America initially dismissed their idea as unrealistic, and Lamarr and Antheil never profited from it, their work was recognized much later, including being accepted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, and serves as a symbol of creation. Celebrating Inventors’ Day on her birthday highlights her great achievements as both a cultural role model and a pioneer whose curiosity helped shape modern technology. A Student Organizations, Leadership and Engagement (SOLE) at MIT We believe that leadership can be learned. We aim to provide students with a variety of inclusive, accessible, and intentional opportunities to develop their leadership philosophy and skills.(我们坚信领导力是可以学习的。 根据“What to Learn”部分“Gain clearer insight into their leadership style (personality, strengths, beliefs, values). Appreciate others’ situations and perspectives so they can act with empathy and inclusion. 根据表格中“Camp Infinite”部分“It is a weekend-long summer activity that jump-starts students’ leadership journey prior to the start of their first spring semester, by helping them reflect on their personal values and explore their leadership potential.(这是一项为期一个周末的暑期活动,旨在学生第一年春季学期开始前为他们的领导力发展之旅奠定基础。该活动通过帮助他们反思个人价值观并探索自身的领导潜力,来开启这一旅程)”以及“Experiential Trips”部分“Each semester, it offers a free three-day, out-of-state trip designed to provide a select group of students with an opportunity to meaningfully engage with other MIT students, staff, and graduates through location-specific leadership experiences.(每学期,它都会组织一次为期三天的州外旅行活动,旨在为一小部分学生提供一个机会,让他们通过针对特定地点的领导力体验活动,与麻省理工学院的其他学生、工作人员和毕业生进行有意义的交流互动)”可知,一年级学生有机会同时参加无限营(Camp Infinite)和体验之旅(Experiential Trips)。故选A。 B It was the fifth of September, 2023. The street where I was standing was full of people, most of them on their way in or out of London’s British Museum. Everything around me cried summer — the tourists wore shorts, T-shirts, skirts — but the sensation I had was of autumn. It wasn’t the date, it was something about the light, which had a different fullness, and that created a different space. I was there to meet Celia Paul. I had been interested in her paintings for a long time, in their distinctive combination of weightlessness and heaviness. I knew from her autobiography that she also worked there, and that only people she had explicitly invited were allowed to set foot inside. I had been invited, but even so I had to wipe the sweat from my palms before pressing the intercom button. A reply came immediately. The kindness in the voice was apparent even through the small, crackly speaker. There was a buzz, I went in and walked up and Celia Paul stood waiting in the hallway inside. When I followed her into the flat, I recognized the floor, worn and dark and made of linoleum, I recognized the plain, white walls, I recognized the window facing the museum, the light that fell through it. And Paul’s face was so familiar that it might have belonged to one of my close friends. Then I saw a painting. The painting seems alive. The chair is not alive, the wall and the floor are not alive. And yet the painting seems just that, alive. This is, I think, because the painting consists of encounters. It emerges brushstroke by brushstroke, in a long-drawn-out moment, continually adjusted. The painting is alive in the sense that it arises out of a process, led and corrected by the artist’s gaze, but also by her ideas, emotions, and expectations, until she considers the painting finished. We see not the chair in itself, as that is for sitting on, but the moment it represents not the world, but our connection to the world. 24.What does the author mean by saying “the sensation I had was of autumn” in Paragraph 1? A.The date was September, so it was already autumn. B.The light had a special quality that felt like autumn. C.The weather was cold and windy, typical of autumn. D.The museum’s white stone walls looked like autumn scenery. 25.We can infer from the text that Celia Paul is ________. A.an open-minded artist who welcomes visitors B.a painter who only creates works for strangers C.a person who values privacy in her life and work D.a friend of the author who often meets in the flat 26.The underlined word “encounters” in Paragraph 4 most probably means________. A.formal meetings B.mutual gazes C.creative ideas D.physical touches 27.What is the main idea of the passage? A.The author’s visit to the British Museum on an autumn day. B.Celia Paul’s unique painting style and artistic achievements. C.The special connection between the author and Celia Paul. D.The author’s experience of meeting Celia Paul and understanding her art. 根据文章第一段“Everything around me cried summer — the tourists wore shorts, T-shirts, skirts — but the sensation I had was of autumn. It wasn’t the date, it was something about the light, which had a different fullness, and that created a different space.(周围的一切都透着夏日的气息——游客们穿着短裤、T恤和短裙——可我却感受到了秋日的氛围。 根据文章第二段“I knew from her autobiography that she also worked there, and that only people she had explicitly invited were allowed to set foot inside.(我从她的自传中得知,她也在这里工作,而且只有她明确邀请的人才能进入。)” 根据下文“It emerges brushstroke by brushstroke, in a long-drawn-out moment, continually adjusted. The painting is alive in the sense that it arises out of a process, led and corrected by the artist’s gaze, but also by her ideas, emotions, and expectations, until she considers the painting finished.(它在漫长的时光里一笔一笔勾勒而成,不断被调整。 根据文章最后一段“It emerges brushstroke by brushstroke, in a long-drawn-out moment, continually adjusted. The painting is alive in the sense that it arises out of a process, led and corrected by the artist’s gaze, but also by her ideas, emotions, and expectations, until she considers the painting finished. We see not the chair in itself, as that is for sitting on, but the moment it represents not the world, but our connection to the world.(它在漫长的时光里一笔一笔勾勒而成,不断被调整。 D。 C A study led by Professor Michael T. French shows that there is a strong connection between high school grades and how much money people earn later in life. The research, which was published in the Eastern Economic Journal, found that each additional point on a high school grade point average (GPA) can increase a person’s earnings by about 12% for men and 14% for women when they become adults. Previous research has already shown that higher levels of education are connected to higher earnings, but the exact relationship between high school grades and income wasn’t well understood. French notes that while good grades are important for getting into college, this study is the first to show their impact on how much money people make later in life. The study used information from the National Longitudinal Survey of Adolescent Health, looking at the records, demographics (人口特征) , and backgrounds of over 10, 000 people. Their educational background and income were checked when the participants were between 24 and 34 years old, which was about ten years after they finished high school. The study looked at data for men and women separately and found that women generally have higher high school GPAs, but men earn more money each year. However, no matter the gender, a higher GPA makes it twice as likely for someone to finish college. It’s also interesting to note that without considering GPA and other performance measures, students from disadvantaged backgrounds seem to have lower levels of education compared to their peers (同龄人) . However, when these factors are included, these groups of students achieve higher levels of education if they have similar high school GPAs to their peers. This could be because students with good grades, regardless of their initial socioeconomic status, are more motivated to go to college. By understanding the importance of high school performance, teachers and counselors (辅导员) can help students see how it affects both their short-term goals like getting into college and their long-term goals like how much they’ll earn as adults. The findings of the research are important for policymakers and educators who want to help students succeed. 28.What is the main value of French’s study? A.Proving the value of higher education. B.Measuring GPA’s effect on future income. C.Finding women get higher grades than men. D.Using a large national survey for research. 29.What is paragraph 4 intended to do? A.To question the reliability of the data. B.To stress the great importance of college. C.To focus on the issue of gender inequality. D.To present two key findings of the study. 30.What is suggested about disadvantaged students with good grades? A.They lack the drive to attend college. B.Their GPAs should be assessed differently. C.They can achieve educational success equally. D.Their family background still holds them back. 31.What can be the best title for the text? A.The Gender Gap in Grades and Income B.Financial Background Affects Achievement C.High School Grades matter for Future Earnings D.A Study on Education Equality and Career Success 【答案】28.B 29.D 30.C 31.C 【导语】本文是一篇说明文。 根据第二段中的“French notes that while good grades are important for getting into college, this study is the first to show their impact on how much money people make later in life.(弗伦奇指出,虽然好成绩对考上大学很重要,但这项研究首次证明了它们对人们日后收入的影响。)” 根据第四段中的“The study looked at data for men and women separately and found that women generally have higher high school GPAs, but men earn more money each year. However, no matter the gender, a higher GPA makes it twice as likely for someone to finish college.(该研究分别分析了男性和女性的数据,发现女性通常高中GPA更高,但男性每年挣得更多。 根据第五段中的“However, when these factors are included, these groups of students achieve higher levels of education if they have similar high school GPAs to their peers.(然而,当把这些因素考虑在内时,如果这些学生的高中GPA与同龄人相似,他们就能获得更高的教育水平。)” 通读全文,尤其是第一段中的“A study led by Professor Michael T. French shows that there is a strong connection between high school grades and how much money people earn later in life.(迈克尔·T·弗伦奇教授领导的一项研究表明,高中成绩与人们日后的收入之间存在密切联系。)” D The anchoring effect, a common mental tendency rooted in the study of how people make economic choices, refers to how people overly depend on the first piece of information, which is called the “anchor (锚)”, when making later judgments. This simple thinking strategy affects pricing negotiations, risk assessments, and even moral evaluations. For instance, jurors (陪审员) asked to consider a 30-year prison sentence before discussion often settle closer to this figure, while those given a 10-year reference tend to suggest much shorter punishments. The Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman threw light on this tendency via his “wheel of fortune” experiment. In the experiment, participants spun a wheel that was secretly set to stop at either 10 or 65. After spinning, they were asked to estimate the percentage of African nations in the UN. Interestingly, those who saw the wheel stop at 10 guessed around 25%, while those seeing 65 guessed about 45%. Even when people know the anchor is random, this unreasonable reliance still persists. The anchoring effect works in two main ways: the process of adjusting one’s thoughts step by step and the influence of early information on later thinking. When people try to guess a number, they often start with the anchor and then change their answer only a little — never enough to get away from the anchor’s influence. This fact becomes apparent in the field of marketing: labels marked with first prices serve as high anchors, which cause consumers to perceive the value of discounts as higher than their actual worth. Neurological (神经学上的) studies find that anchoring stimulates the prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层) and the amygdala (杏仁核). This double activation explains why anchors influence both reasonable and emotional decisions. Yet the tendency has moral issues: lawyers demanding harsher initial sentences often secure longer sentences, while real estate agents controlling listing prices can artificially push up market values. To reduce it, people can set clear evaluation criteria and think carefully without focusing on original anchors, helping them make fairer, more reasonable choices. 32.Which of the following situations best illustrates the anchoring effect? A.A viewer likes a movie star and then enjoys all movies the star acts in. B.A buyer offers £600 for a handbag after the seller first says it costs £800. C.A student picks a book because its cover looks more attractive than others. D.A shopper buys a cheap scarf because it’s placed next to a luxury coat in the store. 33.Why do marketers usually display “original price” tags next to product prices? A.To prove that the original price was fixed in a reasonable way. B.To attract more customers by showing the product’s popularity. C.To show that the product’s quality matches its original high price perfectly well. D.To make consumers believe the discounts are more helpful than they really are. 34.Why does the author mention the prefrontal cortex and amygdala? A.To prove that the anchoring effect is an in-born mental tendency. B.To show that the anchoring effect can be controlled by adjusting brain activity. C.To explain that the anchoring effect shapes both sensible and emotional resolutions. D.To highlight the importance of neurological research in understanding mental phenomena. 35.What is the main purpose of the passage? A.To describe a specific experiment. B.To analyze a harmful influence. C.To discuss a moral phenomenon. D.To explain a mental tendency. 根据第一段“The anchoring effect, a common mental tendency rooted in the study of how people make economic choices, refers to how people overly depend on the first piece of information, which is called the “anchor (锚)”, when making later judgments. (锚定效应是一种常见的心理倾向,源于人们对如何做出经济选择的研究,指的是人们在做出后续判断时,过度依赖第一信息,即所谓的“锚”)”以及第三段“When people try to guess a number, they often start with the anchor and then change their answer only a little — never enough to get away from the anchor’s influence. B选项“A buyer offers £600 for a handbag after the seller first says it costs £800. 根据第三段“This fact becomes apparent in the field of marketing: labels marked with first prices serve as high anchors, which cause consumers to perceive the value of discounts as higher than their actual worth. 根据第四段“Neurological (神经学上的) studies find that anchoring stimulates the prefrontal cortex (前额叶皮层) and the amygdala (杏仁核). This double activation explains why anchors influence both reasonable and emotional decisions. 根据第一段“The anchoring effect, a common mental tendency rooted in the study of how people make economic choices, refers to how people overly depend on the first piece of information, which is called the “anchor (锚)”, when making later judgments. When mastering a foreign language, many people believe that talent is the key to success. You’ve probably heard someone say, “I’m just not good at languages.” But is this really true? 36 The short answer: Talent plays a minor role. The belief that language learning requires talent often discourages many people from even trying. 37 Many multilingual speakers owe their success to disciplined practice, not natural ability. Research supports this view. The 10,000-Hour Rule suggests mastery requires repeated practice. 38 In this way, you can expand vocabulary and understand grammar better. Furthermore, motivation and self-discipline are better predictors of success than talent. So how can you master a language without talent? You can start by setting realistic goals. Break your journey into manageable steps, like learning 10 new words daily. 39 Make practice an essential part of your routine, whether for 15 minutes or an hour. Additionally, you will find yourself benefiting greatly from active learning techniques like shadowing native speakers and testing yourself with flashcards. Finally, take full advantage of immersive learning by watching shows in your target language or changing your phone’s language settings. 40 Research shows that consistency, persistence, and effective strategies are the true keys to success. Language learning isn’t about being born gifted — it’s about showing up and doing the work every day. A.Do you need natural talent to master a language? B.You can’t master a language without repeated practice. C.Hard work combined with talent without doubt pays off. D.Consistency is vitally important in language learning as well. E.It means regular exposure to listening, speaking, reading and writing. F.In short, the idea that talent is necessary to master a language is simply a myth. G.While natural talent might give some a head start, it’s far from the deciding factor. 36.上文“But is this really true?(但这是真的吗?)” 空后“The short answer: Talent plays a minor role.(简短答案:天赋作用很小)”直接给出问题答案。 A“Do you need natural talent to master a language?(掌握一门语言需要天赋吗?)” 故选A。 37.上文“The belief that language learning requires talent often discourages many people from even trying.(认为学语言需天赋的想法让很多人不敢尝试)”说明天赋论带来的消极影响。空后“Many multilingual speakers owe their success to disciplined practice, not natural ability.(多语言者成功靠自律练习而非天赋)”强调天赋并非关键。 G“While natural talent might give some a head start, it’s far from the deciding factor.(天赋或许让人起步快,但绝非决定因素)”先让步承认天赋作用,再转折否定其重要性,与后文否定天赋的观点形成提示呼应。故选G。 38. 空后“In this way, you can expand vocabulary and understand grammar better.(这样能扩充词汇、更好理解语法)”说明练习带来的效果。 E“It means regular exposure to listening, speaking, reading and writing.(这意味着经常接触听说读写)”符合语境。E选项中的“It”指代前文的“repeated practice”,后文“In this way”又指代该选项内容,前后文均有明确指代提示。故选E。 39.上文“Break your journey into manageable steps, like learning 10 new words daily.(把学习拆成可行步骤,如每天学10个单词)”讲述设定目标、拆分学习任务。空后“Make practice an essential part of your routine, whether for 15 minutes or an hour.(将练习纳入你的日常安排中,无论时间是15分钟还是1小时都行)”强调要坚持练习。 D“Consistency is vitally important in language learning as well.(坚持在语言学习中也至关重要)”符合语境。 40.下文“Research shows that consistency, persistence, and effective strategies are the true keys to success.(研究表明坚持、毅力和有效方法才是成功关键)”总结语言学习的真正关键。 F“In short, the idea that talent is necessary to master a language is simply a myth.(简而言之,学语言需天赋的观点只是谬论)”符合语境。 I still remember the day I bought my “nice” notebook. It aims to help us experience rural life and appreciate the beauty of nature. Upon arrival, we enthusiastically joined in the agricultural activities. Some students learned to harvest eggplants and cabbages, while others fed chickens. What followed was a hands-on experience in making traditional rice cakes. We carefully observed the entire process and tried shaping the dough into various forms. The freshly-made rice cakes tasted sweet! In the afternoon, we explored the surrounding area. This trip not only deepened our understanding of farmers’ hard work, but it also allowed us to escape the busy city life and relax in nature. Last Sunday, our school organized a meaningful trip to a nearby village. For weeks, Aubree had been asking for one thing only for her birthday: a “real piano keyboard”, not just some small one made for little kids. Now that Aubree was asleep, Shumaker pulled the box from its hiding spot in their home, ready to reveal the 61-key keyboard with full-size keys — perfect for serious beginners like Aubree. Shumaker figured she’d put together the stand(支架)and bench, and set it all up so it would be ready to play when Aubree woke up and discovered her surprise. But when she opened the box, only the stand and bench were inside. No keyboard. Panic overtook her as she realized what she hadn’t noticed before: The keyboard was sold separately. The night before, mother and daughter had a bedtime talk. At one point, Aubree talked about how excited her friend Jimmy was when she received the lovely doll as a birthday present last year. She also talked about her dream of being a pianist in the future. “I wouldn’t let my daughter be disappointed on her birthday,” said Shumaker. What would Aubree think when she came downstairs and found only a bench and stand — no keyboard? There must be some way to fix this, she thought. Maybe an online retailer could deliver a keyboard by morning. Maybe she could go to a store, if one was still open. She looked into both options, but no luck. Now desperate, Shumaker posted in a neighborhood online group and explained the situation. “I’m so heartbroken and afraid that this will ruin her birthday,” she wrote. Andy Spencer, who lives 5 miles from Shumaker, was crawling into bed just before 2 a. m. when he saw her request. “Any parent would be in a panic,” Spencer said. “I don’t want any kid to be disappointed on her birthday.” Spencer thought of his daughter Hailey’s keyboard, which had hardly been played. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Rejecting the money, Spencer said all he wanted was a photo of a happy Aubree on her birthday. ____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 Spencer thought of his daughter Hailey’s keyboard, which had hardly been played. Spencer told the story to Hailey, who was eager to help. Hailey’s keyboard had 61 full-size keys and would fit perfectly on the stand that Shumaker had. So he typed a message to Shumaker and offered to give away their keyboard. Shumaker couldn’t believe how quickly her luck had appeared. “I am so thankful for your generosity,” she texted. Within a few minutes, Spencer brought the keyboard into Shumaker’s home. “How much do you want for it?” Shumaker asked, figuring she’d send him some money. Rejecting the money, Spencer said all he wanted was a photo of a happy Aubree on her birthday. Just a few hours later, Aubree woke up and rushed into the living room. “Mom,” she exclaimed when she saw the keyboard, “This is the best birthday gift I have received!” She immediately began dancing her fingers over the keys, and her face lit up as those first few notes emerged. Later that day, Shumaker messaged Spencer the photo of Aubree playing the piano with a smile on her face and said thanks once again. The whole experience of that night impressed Shumaker with the warmth from strangers. 3.词汇激活 行为类 ①告诉:tell/inform ②提供:offer/provide ③适合:fit/suit 情绪类 ①感激的:thankful/appreciative ②渴望的:eager/thirsty 【点睛】【高分句型 1】Spencer told the story to Hailey, who was eager to help.(运用了who引导的非限制性定语从句) 【高分句型 2】She immediately began dancing her fingers over the keys, and her face lit up as those first few notes emerged.(运用了as引导的时间状语从句 ) 试卷第1页,共3页 试卷第1页,共3页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $听力考试正式开始。We're never going to make IT to the airport on time. We aim to provide students with a variety of inclusive, accessible, and intentional opportunities to develop their leadership philosophy and skills. We use leadership theories, models, and approaches that help students know communities and contexts well so that they can lead mindfully, fairly, and responsibly. What to Learn Students who participate in SOLE programs will be able to: Gain clearer insight into their leadership style (personality, strengths, beliefs, values). Learn how to apply their leadership style to set and achieve goals. Reflect on and evaluate their experiences to determine how to make effective decisions later. Appreciate others’ situations and perspectives so they can act with empathy and inclusion. Realize the importance of building productive and mutually beneficial relationships with others. Demonstrate personal and social responsibility and the pursuit of positive personal and social change. Our Programs Camp Infinite It is a weekend-long summer activity that jump-starts students’ leadership journey prior to the start of their first spring semester, by helping them reflect on their personal values and explore their leadership potential. Experiential Trips Each semester, it offers a free three-day, out-of-state trip designed to provide a select group of students with an opportunity to meaningfully engage with other MIT students, staff, and graduates through location-specific leadership experiences. C A study led by Professor Michael T. A.The Gender Gap in Grades and Income B.Financial Background Affects Achievement C.High School Grades matter for Future Earnings D.A Study on Education Equality and Career Success D The anchoring effect, a common mental tendency rooted in the study of how people make economic choices, refers to how people overly depend on the first piece of information, which is called the “anchor (锚)”, when making later judgments. I still remember the day I bought my “nice” notebook. This play, written by Tang Xianzu over 400 years ago, was adapted by the University of Birmingham. This performance was part of 57 international drama festival.
