practicing gratitude
The interesting thing about practicing gratitude is that people don't have to be born with that tendency
they can learn how to be thankful. It only takes a little practice to make it a daily habit and enjoy all the emotional
benefits of gratitude. This collection edited by Tedinal Denzel shows readers how to do it themselves.
Sarah Ammerman. for example. wrote down the good things that happened to her throughout the year and
threw the slips of paper in a Mason jar. Each New Year's Day she sits down and reads all the notes she wrote during
the previous vear. Dana Drosdick started a gratitude practice after her grandmother died by writing down ten things
that had given her joy each day. This new habit helped her find joy in her life again
An attitude of gratitude also helped contributors to find the silver linings, even in hardship. Jill Keller's family
lost everything when their house was flooded, but they discovered how happy they could be with less possession and
more family time. Linda Breeden found her life was much improved after she lost her job: she found a new less
demanding one, with a better work-life balance. Those silver linings happen again and again in this new book, and
will urge readers to say "I wonder what my silver lining will be" when they face their own challenges
Another theme in the book is the joy of giving. Being charitable and performing random acts of kindness make
the benefactors feel great and help them count the blessings in their own lives. Ci Cole. for example. forgot her own
financial problems when she stepped up and paid for the groceries of the elderly woman in front of her at the grocery
store. And Francesca Peppiatt was able to find pupose and peace through donating her husband's organs after he died.

[2022-2023河南省实验中学高二下期中]Asong called Lonely Warrior(《孤勇者》)is always ringing in
my ears. Six years ago, after hosting an annual ceremony for my school, I found that my left leg was a little
swollen, and very soon I could barely walk. In fact, the swollen part became a fist-sized meatball that was so
painful that I could barely sleep. Of course, I went to a local hospital, where I was given very bleak(不乐观的)
news-osteosarcoma, which means bone cancer.
I underwent chemotherapy (化疗) for the next two years, and it was the worst time of my life. Physically,
felt that the side effects of chemotherapy were killing me. I lost all of the hair on my body and I became totally
bald. I could barely eat anything, even if I felt hungry. I no longer needed an alarm clock to wake up in the
morning. Instead, what woke me up was my body telling me that I needed to vomit (呕t).
I had no idea where all this treatment would leave me, and the dreams I had once nursed about the future were
entirely wiped out. I wanted to feel the world and experience more, so I stuck to the course of treatment. As time
went by, however, I became weaker and weaker. The side effects now were far worse than they had been earlier.
I was eventually suggested that the leg be chopped off, and the doctor said that might be the best thing to do.
as long as I could cope with the psvchological and social pressures afterward. I made my decision very calmly.
because I knew things could not be worse than they were at that moment, and I was determined that this was just
one more battle I would win.
Now. six vears later, I have weathered all these difficulties. I have been so lucky to be able to find the
strength to deal with all of this, and what I have to tell anyone still struggling with difficulties is this: have faith in
yourself, and do not let bad moments drag you down. Just hang on and you will come through.
5. What can we learn about the side effects of chemotherapy?
A. They made the author suffer a lot.
B. They destroved the author's faith
C. They were relieved after treatment.
D. They were more obvious in the davtime.

[2022-2023江西省智学联盟体高二下第二次联考]Although we all experience failure in our lives,we don't
all react to it in the same way. An interesting research has emphasized the notion that there are some people who
embrace challenges and disappointments as opportunities to refocus their thinking. These are people with a growth
mindset. Then, there are other people who see failure as a complete failure. They believe that they never had the
talent anyway, and they probably never will. These are people with a fixed mindset
Psychologist Dweck has studied these mindsets and provided evidence that most people intentionally place
themselves in one of those two groups, The group to which you assign yourself frequently determines how you reac
to challenges. If you experience failure and give up, you have conveniently assigned yourself to the fixed group. If
you experience failure and regard it as a stepping stone, then you have placed yourself into the growth group.
According to the research, people in the growth group tend to generate more creative ideas than those in the
fixed group. To illustrate, consider Thomas Edison. In the 19th century, Edison attempted to improve the ligh
bulb and experimented with numerous materials. Over a thousand trials, he managed to discover an elemen
sustaining light. A reporter once asked him,"It seems as though you've tried many times and continue to fail each
time. Why is that?" Edison answered,"I have not failed. I've just found 10, ooo ways that won't work."
In studies of creative people, psychologists discovered that a distinguishing feature separating them from the
non-creative is that they make lots of mistakes and continue to work through them. Most people consider success
and failure as polar opposites. In reality, they are both parts of the same process.

When Rebecca got home, the first thing she had to do was her homework. She had to write a
composition this time. While Rebecca was thinking about her teacher's instruction that it was alwavs the easiest to
write about the most familiar things, she watched her cat slowly approach a fly that had flown to the edge of the
bed. Just as a surprise attack was about to be carried out, the fly suddenly flew away. The cat fell off the bed
landed on the floor on her back and looked around as if to say, "What happened?" Rebecca laughed hard. That was
when she decided to write a piece about her cat.
Having finished her homework, Rebecca was staving inside and plaving with her cat when her mum called hel
to dinner.
“What was the best thing that happened to you today?" asked her dad. It was always the first question he
asked as they sat down to dinner. Rebecca wasted no time telling her parents about her cat
After she told hers. Rebecca's dad asked. "So, what was the worst?"
Rebecca wore a worried expression."So what shall I do?" she asked."There was a new girl whose name was
Mary Brown in my class. I want to talk to Mary Brown but I don't want to risk losing my old friends."
Her father thought for a moment, and asked, "Rebecca, what do you think courage means?"
“Isn't that when soldiers go to war to fight?"
“Well, yes. That is one kind of courage," replied her dad."Mostly, people are afraid because they might get
hurt, or they think people won't like them. It's a different kind of eourage to do something when you are afraid. Tha
is called moral courage," explained her father.
