conflict resolution
[2022一2023山东省青岛市高三二模]Identical twins Kathy and Sophie arrived at college last year and
determined to strike out on independent paths,so they had requested rooms in different dorms. While Kathy got
along with her roommate,Sophie was miserable. She and her roommate silently warred over matters ranging from
when the lights should be turned off to how the furniture should be arranged. Finally, they divided the room in two
and gave up on oral communication.During this time,Sophie kept seeking comfort from Kathy. Before long, the
two wanted to live together again.Sophie's roommate eventually agreed to move out.
Sophie's ability to solve her dilemma by rooming with her identical twin is unusual, but the conflict she faced
is not. Most roommate conflicts spring from such small, annoying differences rather than from grand disagreements
over abstract principles. One person likes quiet, while the other person spends two hours a day practicing the
trumpet. One eats only organically()produced vegetables and loves animals, while the other likes wearing
fur and enjoys cutting up frogs in biology class.
When personalities don't mix,the excitement of being away at college can quickly fade away. Moreover,
roommates can affect each other's psychological health.A recent study reports that depression in college roommates
is often passed from one person to another.
Many schools have started conflict resolution programs to calm tensions that otherwise can build up like a
volcano preparing to explode, finally resulting in physical violence. Some colleges have resorted to "roommate
contracts"that all new students fill out and sign after attending a lecture on roommate relations.Students detail
behavioral guidelines for their room, including acceptable hours for study and sleep,a policy for use of each other's
possessions. Some schools try to head off the feud before it begins by using computerized matching.Students are
put together on the basis of their responses to housing form questions.
1.Why is the twins'story mentioned?
A.To describe college life.
B.To reveal the relationship of the twins.

[2022-2023四川省凉山州宁南中学高二下开学考试]My wife and I were at a crowded grocery store not long
ago.It was a weekday evening, cold and wet and tense.People were carelessly blocking aisles, complaining and
cutting one another off with their carts. At one point, two women quarreled for several minutes in the freezer
section.
Things got worse at the checkout line. The cashier scanned a man's discount card, but he misread the savings
on her screen as an additional charge. He decided she was acting on purpose and began to argue.
Other customers looked away as the cashier tried to reason with him.She called a manager, who took him to
customer service.Shaken, she moved to the next customer in line.
We've all witnessed uncomfortable scenes like this in public places. My reaction when I see them is both
personal and professional.I am a data analyst and sociologist who studies how and why people interact with one
another-or why they choose not to.To me,the grocery scene was another example of how our trust in others has
disappeared. But it was also a teachable moment on how we can rebuild our faith-starting with just one person.
Therefore,my wife and I reached the disturbed cashier.I grabbed a bottle of water from a nearby cooler and
handed it to her.We learned her name was Beth.
"We felt bad about how that man treated you and wanted to buy this for you,"I said.
Beth's face lit up,and we talked as she scanned our items. She told us she had been working that evening
through severe foot pain and would be having surgery later that week.We wished her well in her recovery, and she
thanked us as we left.
That is the balancing act,the moment of countering social and emotional pain with healing, that will add up to
restore trust across the United States. You can start that pattern in someone else's life, even in a place as ordinary
as the neighborhood grocery store.
5.By describing the arguments, the author wants to show
A.the job as a cashier is not easy
B.people in the US are unfriendly
C.arguments in public are very common
D.trust in each other has wor off
6.How did Beth probably feel when the couple gave her a bottle of water?
A.Sad and regretful.
B.Sorry and embarrassed.
C.Cheerful and rewarded.
D.Grateful and relieved.

Most of our customers were well-off retirees.Generally a nice group of customers, but definitely rich uptight
people.Forgetting to bring salt to some might be a huge offense but automatically bringing it causes others to give
you a lecture about sodium()intake.
It was St.Patrick's Day.Needless to say,it was an crazy evening with me rushing around serving corned beef
and cabbage pouring Guinness. For some reason, the bar supervisor always liked to have food specials on display
for people to see. While I got the concept,it generally just caused us to get mean looks when we told people they
probably shouldn't eat it.
As the night was beginning to slow down,I had an older couple sit at the only open seats-next to our food
displays.I was clearing tables and leaned over to let them know I'd be right with them when a plate slid off the
mountain of dishes I was carrying, dropping right into the food display. The 12-hour-old gravy and potatoes
somehow still had some fluidity to them and flew up,then dropped-right into the man's lap.
I was horrified and apologizing profusely()while trying to set down the mountain of dishes.
The man looked up at me and said,"I just have one thing to tell you.
He slowly leaned in-at which point I was thinking he was about to spit in my face-and he said,"I don't

It was the laugh I needed that night and he wouldn't even let me give him a free beer as an apology.

[2022-2023广东省深圳市龙华中学高二下期中(改编)]0 ne morning,my six-year-old daughter and I were
getting ready to leave the house when she suddenly yelled rude words right at me.As I processed the words,I
noticed she was upset.Tears streamed down her face as she half whispered and half yelled "You are a BAD
Mama."Total silence followed as we looked at each other. We were staring at each other for so long, and I nearly
forgot to breathe out.How could my daughter behave like that?
There are many behaviors that really push parents'buttons.Disrespectful, rude words tend to top the list. The
wrong response to such rude remarks is often a serious warning. But I didn't offer any serious remarks.
I realized that my daughter's intention wasn't to disrespect me.She was expressing the disconnection. And
punishment doesn't solve disconnection. It creates more of it.She was annoyed. She sensed the stress.I needed to
hear her.I was being careless.I was the one being rude to her.
So,why punish our children when they need guidance? We must know the words we use matter, and become
our children's words too.The words include those we use to handle emotional overload. It is a word I regretfully
must admit to using when I'm extremely annoyed. Not at my children, but yes, they have heard me say it.So,
instead of punishing my daughter for misbehavior,I chose to focus on her real message:It means that"Mom,you
are stressing me out!".
No blame. No punishment for honest feelings. No criticizing her choice of words.Just focus on our
relationship.I admitted my ignoring her,and we hugged and kissed each other.I walked into her play school with
interest and was ready to see all her current projects.
Don't be afraid to focus on your relationship,to show kindness, and to model forgiveness.Don't be afraid to
look beyond misbehavior, find the true message and trust the power of connection.
5.After hearing her daughter's words,the author
A.lost her temper
B.gave her a warning
C.couldn't believe it
D.had a talk with her
6.What does the underlined phrase push parents'buttons in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Cheer parents up.
B.Make parents annoyed.
C.Follow parents'advice.
D.Distract parents'attention.
7.From the text we can conclude that the mother is
A.calm and considerate
B.brave and tolerant
C.sensitive but overprotective
D.intelligent but bad-tempered
UNIT 11 CONFLICT AND COMPROMISE
8.What's the purpose of this text?
A.To settle conflicts between parents and children.
B.To explain why children disrespect their parents.
C.To encourage readers to express their true feelings.

adjustments are all stressful events for the members of a family.Learning effective skills is key to solving
disagreements.
Schedule a time to talk as a group. When working together, you are more likely to solve family differences.
Then, once tempers are cooled, everyone needs to plan to come together and think out a solution to
the problem.
Focus on the issue at hand. When disagreements occur, people tend to bring up any and every unresolved
issue they have ever faced with the other parties. This blurs the point of the discussion.Try to uncover what is
important about the current problem.2.
Have everyone state what they truly mean.Direct communication is essential to effective conflict resolution.
3.
Such "I"statements allow everyone to express themselves while they show respect for others'
listening.
Let another know you recognize, value, and accept his thoughts, opinions,or beliefs.Of
course, your own opinions may differ greatly, but using validation()demonstrates that you see the other as a
human, worthy of respect.Validate your family members by saying something like "I'm really glad that you feel
comfortable enough to share this with me"or "I appreciate your willingness to work towards a solution".
Decide on a solution together.Once everyone has shared their needs, wants, and concerns, consider all the
suggestions that each party has provided and look for a middle ground.5.If necessary, develop a
contract or written agreement.
A.Seek professional advice.
B.Show respect for each person's point of view.
C.Raising old misdeeds will not help resolve this issue.
D.Conflict in the family can affect everyone's functioning.
E.The first step is calming down and agreeing there is a problem.
F.Everyone present should feel good about the proposed solution.
G.Each party should use "I"statements to clearly state your needs and concerns.
