There are very few countries in the world that don’t have some sort of legend (传说) or connections with dragons. Here are some great destinations to get a fix on dragons.
France
Calais in France has a dragon standing 33 feet tall, 82 feet long, with a wingspan of more than 55 feet. It walks and moves as you would imagine a dragon does, and you can take it for a ride. The Calais dragon is a mechanical wonder, which is nearly too real to be called a pleasure ground creature.
The UK
In the UK, you will find a proud dragon country, Wales, where there is a legend of two dragons: one white and one red. Wales’ tale describes the two dragons fighting and the re one winning, so you will find it difficult to hurry about the country without coming across red dragon. Dragons are sold in souvenir shops, sit by ancient castles, hang around in KirArthur’s Labyrinth, and are featured on Wales’ flag.
Norway
The Vikings knew a thing or two about dragons. In the lovely film How to Train YourDragon, they even flew them. But seriously, when you dig into Norway’s Viking history and legends, you will find dragons mentioned everywhere, though they are not as cute as those in the film. From the figurehead in the Viking Ship Museum to jewelry, and decorations on buildings, be on the lookout for them when visiting Norway.
Bhutan
The Druk or Thunder Dragon, is the national symbol and appears everywhere. The country is called Land of the thunder Dragon, or Kingdom of Druk, and it’s part of the national anthem (国歌) and its flag. Despite its fearful name, it’s actually rather cute. The legend has it that the sound of thunder through the mountains is actually the dragon roaring.
1. What can we learn about the Calais dragon?
A. It’s a real creature trained for rides. B. It’s a sculpture exhibited in a museum.
C. It’s a character from an animated film. D. It’s a creation designed for entertainment.
2 Where can we see dragons in Norway?
A. In souvenir shops. B. On the national flag.
C. Only in the film How to Train Your Dragon. D. On buildings and in the Viking Ship Museum.
3. In which country is the dragon associated with a natural phenomenon?
A. France. B. Bhutan. C. Norway. D. The UK.

When Tara Wood brought her daughter to a grocery store to buy the four-year-old some cupcakes, she had no idea that would be a life-changing experience.
As Tara pushed her daughter Norah around the store last month, she passed an old man who was by himself. The old man foʊked cold, until Norah shouted to him, “Hi! It’s my birthday today!” The man stopped and his demeanor changed from distant and serious to warm and friendly. “How old are you today?” the man asked. After some time talking together, Norah asked her mom to take a picture of her with her new friend “Mr. Dan”, Dan Peterson, 82. They hugged and after ten minutes went their separate ways. That could have been the end of the story. But it is actually the beginning of a special relationship.
Tara posted the picture of her daughter and Mr. Dan on Facebook and someone who recognized him reached out to her with his contact information. It turned out that Mr. Dan’s wife died in March and he had been suffering from depression and anxiety ever since. The person on Facebook told Tara that it was the first time they had seen Mr. Dan smile since the death of his wife. Knowing that, Tara contacted Mr. Dan, and ever since Norah and the 82-year-old have developed a friendship unlike any other. “She has shown me a depth of love, a depth that I didn’t know existed,” Mr Dan told the reporter.
Mr. Dan told Tara that before meeting Norah, he hadn’t had one night of uninterrupted sleep. Anxiety kept him up at all hours and made him restless. After meeting Norah, he said he now sleeps soundly. For Mr. Dan’s 82nd birthday on October 20, the mother and the daughter brought balloons and presents— and, of course, cupcakes. Mr. Dan will also spend a day around Thanksgiving with Norah and her family. “If you don’t take the time to notice people, you will never know how you can positively impact a life,” Tara Wood said.
4. Mr. Dan looked cold in the beginning because ______
A. he felt lonely B. he disliked little kids
C. nobody had hugged him D. he knew little about Norah
5. How did Tara know more about Mr. Dan?
A. From a news reporter. B. From a stranger. C. From a shop assistant. D. From his neighbor.
6. What impact did Norah have on Mr. Dan’s life after their meeting at the grocery store?
A. She helped him overcome his fear of social events.
B. She inspired him to start a new hobby in his life.
C. She brought joy and comfort to improve his health.
D. She encouraged him to move to a new city to live.
7. What can we learn from the story?

Concrete has served as the foundation stone of the construction industry for hundreds of years. However, the process of producing concrete is one of the most envisonmentally unfriendly processes in the world. In the process, not only is carbon dioxide (二氧化碳) released into the air by the energy used to heat the limestone (石灰石), but the limestone itself also gives out a huge amount of the element.
Luckily, a number of start-ups throughout the world are using creative thinking to make the construction industry a whole lot more friendly to the planet.
A Canadian company called CarbonCure has found a way to inject (注入) concrete with carbon dioxide itself. Not only does this trap the carbon dioxide into the concrete, keeping it from running away into the atmosphere, but it also creates a super strong material called calcium carbonate, which reduces the total amount of concrete that needs to be used.
California-based Brimstone, is creating carbon-negative concrete by doing away with limestone entirely and instead using silicate (硅酸盐) rock, a material that does not release carbon dioxide when heated. Instead, the process produces magnesium (镁), which absorbs carbon dioxide, as the basis for their concrete.
Additionally, researchers at Australia’s RMIT University have recently released a study showing that adding coffee grounds instead of sand to concrete could make it much stronger, reducing the amount of sand used, as well as the amount of concrete that would need to be used in the final product.
The biggest barrier at this point is convincing members of the industry that the new types of concrete are sat to be used, according to Stacy Smedley, director at a non-profit focused on decarbonizing construction.
Hopefully these new solutions to the environmental problems of concrete will soon be widely adopted. Given the significant part the construction industry has in releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, great improvements can be made when more environmentally friendly materials are used.
8. What environmental issue does traditional concrete production cause?
A. The high consumption of energy. B. The processing of waste materials.
C. The mass release of carbon dioxide. D. The use of non-recyclable resources.
9. What does CarbonCure do to address the environmental issue
A. Add sand to concrete. B. Put carbon dioxide into concrete.
C. Replace silicate rock with concrete. D. Absorb carbon dioxide with magnesium.
10. According to Smedley, what is the major challenge faced by these new solutions?
A. Difficulty in making profits.
B. Lack of funding for research.
C. Convincing the public of the improvement.
D. Removing the industry members’ safety concerns.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the passage?
A. To introduce innovations to produce concrete. B. To emphasize the significance of creativity.
C. To advocate environmental protection. D. To promote an alternative to concrete.

For several decades, there has been an extensive and organized campaign intended to generate distrust in science, funded by those whose interests and ideologies are threatened by the findings of modern science. In response, scientists have tended to stress the success of science. After all, scientists have been right about most things.
Stressing successes isn’t wrong, but to r many people it’s not persuasive. An alternative answer to the question “Why trust science?” is that scientists use the so-called scientific method. If you’ve got a high school-science textbook lying around, you’ll probably find that answer in it. But what is typically thought to be the scientific method — develop a hypothesis (假设), then design an experiment to test it — isn’t what scientists actually do. Science is dynamic: new methods get invented; old ones get abandoned; and sometimes, scientists can be found doing many different things. If there is no identifiable scientific method, then what is the reason for trust in science? The answer is how those claims are evaluated. The common element in modern science, regardless of the specified field or the particular methods being used, is the strict scrutiny (审查)of claims. It’s this tough, sustained process that works to make sure faulty claims are rejected. A scientific claim is never accepted as true until it has gone through a lengthy “peer review” because the reviewers are experts in the same field who have both the right and the obligation (责任) to find faults.
A key aspect of scientific judgment is that it is done collectively. No claim gets accepted until it has been vetted by dozens, if not hundreds, of heads. In areas that have been contested, like climate science and vaccine safety, it’s thousands. This is why we are generally justified in not worrying too much if a single scientist, even a very famous one, disagrees with the claim. And this is why diversity in science — the more people looking at a claim from different angles — is important.
Does this process ever go wrong? Of course. Scientists are humans. There is always the possibility of revising a claim on the basis of new evidence. Some people argue that we should not trust science because scientists are “always changing their minds”. While examples of truly settled science being overturned are far fewer than is sometimes claimed, they do exist. But the beauty of this scientific process is that it explains what might otherwise appear paradoxical (矛盾的): that science produces both novelty and stability. Scientists do change their minds in the face of new evidence, but this is a strength of science, not a weakness.
12. What does the author think of the scientific method?
A. Unchallenged. B. Unfixed. C. Reliable. D. Recognized.
13. What does the underlined word “vetted” in paragraph 4 probably mean.
A. Explained. B. Examined. C. Repeated. D. Released.
14. According to the passage, the author may agree that ______.
A. it is not persuasive to reject those faulty claims.
B. settled science tends to be collectively overturned.
C. a leading expert cannot play a decisive role in a scrutiny.
D. diversity in knowledge is the common element in science.
15. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?
A. Put Your Faith in Science. B. Defend the Truth in Science.
C. Apply Your Mind to Science. D. Explore a Dynamic Way to Science.
【答案】12. B 13. B 14. C 15. A

【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据画线词上文“A key aspect of scientific judgment is that it is done collectively.(科学判断的一个关键方面是集体判断)”以及后文“by dozens, if not hundreds, of heads(经过几十个,甚至几百个领导)”可知,科学判断的一个关键方面是集体判断,说明观点要经过许多领导的审查才会被接受,故画线词意为“审查,仔细检查”。故选B。
14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“A key aspect of scientific judgment is that it is done collectively. No claim gets accepted until it has been vetted by dozens, if not hundreds, of heads.(科学判断的一个关键方面是它是集体完成的。在经过几十个(甚至几百个)领导的审查之前,任何主张都不会被接受)”及“This is why we are generally justified in not worrying too much if a single scientist, even a very famous one, disagrees with the claim.(这就是为什么当一个科学家,即使是一个非常著名的科学家,不同意这种观点时,我们通常没有理由过分担心。)”可知,科学观点是经过多人审查的,而某一个人,即使是非常著名的科学家也不能在审查中起决定性作用。故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“For several decades, there has been an extensive and organized campaign intended to generate distrust in science, funded by those whose interests and ideologies are threatened by the findings of modern science. 第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整短文。
Have you ever been so depressed that you can’t sleep? You also can’t eat. You can’t read. You have no friends to call up and nothing is good on TV. So you sigh, press your face down harder into your pillow, and shed a few tears.
This was my life two years ago. I had just turned 14 but already found life a struggle. As I lay in my bed one Saturday, Mom peeked (瞄) into my room to make her regular “Is Emily still alive” check. I knew that if I spent more time like this, she would begin dusting me. After suggesting a few things for me to do that I immediately rejected, Mom made her move, “Emily! Get dressed! I’m taking the dog out for a walk, and you’re coming with me!” “Why?” I protested. “Because it’ll make you feel better.”
The thought of moving was unbearable. I felt as if all of my body parts were weighed down by tons of bricks I couldn’t remember the last time I had gone outside. Somehow I found the strength to slip on a pair of jeans and a black sweatshirt. Mom was waiting at the door, leash (狗绳) in hand and dog at her side.
Then, we stepped outside. It was a warm March day and it had been a long time since the warmth of the sun had touched my cheeks. Mom led the dog and me down some dirt paths, through a big field and reached Halsey Pond. But the signs of spring had yet to appear and the scene was rather colorless throughout the entire journey.
“I’m tired! It’s boring, Mom! When can we go home?” “Not yet,” she’d say. Mom stopped to say hi to every jogger, dog walker, runner, and bicyclist who passed us. Sometimes she would get into a conversation. They would talk about weather, dogs, and all small talk topics. She seemed happy, and was literally glowing (容光焕发). After walking for what seemed an age, Mom finally said it was time to go back.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

Paragraph 2: A new Saturday found me asking Mom if I could take the dog out.
_______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】Paragraph 1:
When I got home, a new feeling seemed to be awakened. The heaviness that had weighed me down before seemed to have lifted, if only slightly. The simple act of being outside, feeling the warmth of the sun, and hearing the chirping of birds had sparked something inside me. It was a glimmer of hope, a tiny ray of light in the darkness of my depression. I realized that maybe, just maybe, there was still something worth living for.
Paragraph 2:
A new Saturday found me asking Mom if I could take the dog out. This time, it was me who suggested the walk. As we strolled through the familiar paths, I noticed the subtle changes in the scenery. The trees were starting to bud, flowers were beginning to bloom, and the pond was alive with the sounds of frogs and insects. It was as if nature itself was coming alive, mirroring the newfound sense of life stirring within me. With each step, I felt a little lighter, a little more alive. And as we returned home, I realized that sometimes, the simplest moments can have the most profound impact on our lives.

After meeting Norah, he said he now sleeps soundly. For Mr. Dan’s 82nd birthday on October 20, the mother and the daughter brought balloons and presents— and, of course, cupcakes.

For several decades there has been an extensive and organized campaign intended to generate distrust in science, funded by those whose interests and ideologies are threatened by the findings of modern science.

1.续写词数应为150左右;
