He visited cities such as Beijing and Shenzhen, connecting with local runners. “The plan is to meet as many Chinese people as possible before I conclude my tour,” Kipchoge said. Kipchoge was raised on a farm. As a child, he would often ride his bicycle to sell milk and run to and from school each day. In 2002, he started running races, focusing on the 5,000 meters for 11 years. In 2013, Kipchoge turned to running marathons, which he did for another 11 years. Kipchoge has often said: “Marathons are like life because both are full of challenges.” From his first marathon in 2013 to breaking the world record twice and winning two Olympic gold medals, Kipchoge has not only achieved great success but also inspired (激励) a global community of runners. For years, Kipchoge has followed a strict daily routine (日常安排). His day begins at 5 am when he rises for a morning run. Then, he returns home for a tea break. In the afternoon, he heads out for another run, then spends the rest of the day focusing on recovery (恢复) before getting ready for bed. Besides his love for the sport, Kipchoge’s amazing career (职业生涯) comes from his drive to push the limits of human endurance (耐力). In 2019, he became the first athlete (运动员) to run a marathon in under two hours. “It’s not just about running to win or breaking records. It’s about the satisfaction you feel after finishing a marathon-knowing that you can run anything, that you can accomplish (实现) anything in this world,” Kipchoge told China Daily. 1.How many times has Kipchoge visited China? 2.What has Kipchoge achieved since he started running marathons? 3.Why did Kipchoge choose marathon running as his career according to the text? 4.According to Kipchoge, what can marathons bring to runners? 2 Mr Hatch lived a lonely life. He walked to work every day and ate his lunch alone in a corner. He never smiled. He never talked to anyone on his way home. In the evening he read a newspaper and went to bed early. His life changed, however, one day when he got a heart-shaped box full of chocolate in the mail (信箱), along with a piece of paper that said, “Somebody loves you.” At first, he couldn’t believe it, but as he read the message, he began to laugh and dance around. The message opened his heart to the power of love. Soon he found himself being cheerful. He became a joy at work and began to help out people in the neighborhood. As the days and weeks went by, his laughter, smiles, kindness, happiness and love touched everyone around him. Later, Mr Hatch found out that the heart-shaped box belonged to somebody else. It was a mistake. He felt sad and went back to his old ways. When his neighbors found out, however, they decided not to lose the light he shared. They surprised him with a party and a long banner (条幅) that read: “Everybody Loves Mr Hatch.” Mr Hatch cried when he knew that somebody loved him after all. Then he laughed, smiled and hugged his friends. We all have a little bit of Mr Hatch in us. At times we all feel unloved and unlovable. However, somebody does love us. 1.How did Mr Hatch go to work every day? 2.What opened Mr Hatch’s heart to the power of love? 3.How did he feel when he found the mistake? 4.Have you ever felt lonely? Why or why not? Write 30 words or more. 3 In my early childhood, I was often surprised when I saw my father making a small number of money with difficulty. Being a child, I was unable to understand him. When I was older, my father started doing a part-time job at home. He used to bring some work back and work till late night. I can’t forget he played with me when I was three or four years old. He taught me how to read when I was at the age of 5. He took care of me all night when I was sick. Whenever I felt down, he would cheer me up. He also cared about my lessons and often helped me get ready for examinations. Later he sent me for the best education. Whenever I needed money, he never refused. He always managed money for my studies. After graduation, I got a job at a hospital. When I succeeded in operating on my first patient, I got a strong feeling of satisfaction. When I got my first salary (薪水) which was about ten times more than my pocket money, I spent it all on myself. When I returned home one fine morning, I heard my father communicating with one neighbor.  He was telling him my success in the job very proudly. A dream, his son should become better than himself came true. I was unable to move on my feet. Past twenty-three years flashed into my mind in a moment. I knew my father loved me very much. I could understand the decisions my father made in the past. The financial (经济) difficulty he was facing was decided by his goal—making his child more successful than himself. 1.What did the writer fail to understand his father as a child? 2.What did the writer probably work as after graduation? 3.What was the writer’s father’s dream? 4.How do you spend your pocket money wisely? (Write 30 words or more) 4 Anyone with a mobile phone has likely dropped it in water or been caught in a rainstorm. And many people seem to think that putting a wet phone in a bag of rice will rescue (save) it. However, Apple recently warned against doing just that. The technology company said it is a bad idea because small particles (颗粒) of rice can get into the phone and cause damage. So what should you do instead? If the phone is dropped in water, dry it with a towel or clean cloth, and even a shirt will do. Turn the phone off if you can. Remove its SIM card.Remove the phone’s cover. Remove the battery, if possible. And let everything dry at room temperature, perhaps with a fan running. Since you cannot take the phone apart, Apple suggests tapping the phone against your hand with the connecting ports (端口) facing down so water can flow out. If your phone is dropped in seawater, treated water, or a drink, Samsung suggests keeping it in clean water for a few minutes. Doing that will remove any salt or substances that could hurt the phone. Both Apple and Samsung say it’s best to leave the phone out in an open area to dry it out. More importantly, do not use a hair dryer or put the phone in a freezer. Most newer phones are not waterproof (防水的) but they are water-resistant. Apple says its newest phones can survive 30 minutes in up to 6 meters of water. Samsung’s phones can last for the same amount of time in about 5 meters. But remember that the water resistance will decrease over time. The phone manufacturers say it is hard to know when phones are completely dry. But it will likely take a few days. Samsung advises bringing the phone into a service center for inspection even after it’s been air-dried. 1.Why can’t we put a wet phone in the rice? 2.What does Apple tell us to do to rescue a wet phone since we cannot take the phone apart? 3.What does Samsung suggest doing if a phone is dropped in seawater? 4.How long can the newest Apple phone survive if it’s water resistant? 5.Can you think of a way to keep your phone from getting wet? 5 Advertisements (广告) for junk food like hamburgers are common online and on TV. But in the UK, this will soon change. In September 2024, the UK government decided to ban (禁止) all online advertisements for less healthy food and drinks. On TV, such advertisements cannot appear before 9 p.m. each day. The ban will come into force in October 2025. Its goal is to lower childhood obesity (肥胖). In the 2022-2023 school year, over 20 percent of 4 to 5-year-olds in England were overweight. Among children who just started middle school, more than 36 percent have the same health problem. The government believes that introducing the ban is the right move. They think seeing fewer junk food advertisements can help children eat more healthily. Many experts support this view. A lot of studies have shown that the more advertisements people see, the more junk food they will buy. But some disagree. They argue that banning advertisements does not get to the real cause of the problem. “Do kids really want junk food because they see it on TV, or is it because they’ve tried it once and want it again?” Questioned Dina Rabie. In her opinion, the government should pay more attention to educating children about eating well. 1.What can’t appear on TV before 9 p.m. according to the new law? 2.How many new middle school students in England have the obesity problem? 3.What does the government believe fewer junk food advertisements help do? 4.What does Dina think is the way to deal with the obesity problem? 5.What do you think of the new ban? What is your advice to deal with the obesity problem? 6 Nowadays, many people choose to watch movie summaries (总结) through short videos. But many directors said that audience (观众) should visit the cinema instead of just watching a 3-minute video summary on the phone. Here, some students are discussing whether short movie summaries are enough. Yu Cheng, a 16-year-old boy A short movie video can make people interested. It is exciting and it makes people love the movie right away. Also, different video makers tell a movie story in their own way. By watching these different views on the story, we can learn to think about things from different angles (角度). This helps us get better at understanding movies more deeply. Jia Yi, a 15-year-old girl Since we live in a fast-paced (快节奏的) world, a short video makes it more convenient for us to get information. Sometimes, people are interested in a new movie but they don’t have time to see it. This would help people save time and money. Some people think short videos cause misunderstandings. But don’t worry! We can always go to the cinema and see the movies for ourselves. Shao Xinyan, a 13-year-old girl People watch movies to feel the emotions. When people watch a movie fully, they can remember the story for a long time. This helps people think about it deeply. However, short video summaries make it difficult to feel these emotions. Also, there may be some mistakes in short videos, so people might get wrong ideas about movies. As such, I believe it is better to watch a movie from the beginning to the end. Cui Luoyao, a 14-year-old boy Every excellent film has its special features. It cannot be told clearly in only a few minutes. Also, everyone is different so we may have different ideas about the same movie. Some may believe a movie is a must-see, but others may say it is bad. If we just follow what short video makers say, then we may be misled by others’ opinions and miss some great movies. So we should go and see the complete movie ourselves to make our own judgment. No matter which way we choose to watch a movie, there are both advantages and disadvantages. We can make different choices to meet our needs. 1.What does Yu Cheng think of a short movie video? 2.According to Jia Yi, what is the advantage of watching a 3-minute video summary? 3.Why does Cui Luoyao think people can’t just follow what short video makers say? 4.From Shao Xinyan’ s and Cui Luoyao’ s opinions, how should we see a movie? 5.Which way do you like to watch a movie? Why do you like it? 7 Many books have been written about the art of giving. But what about the art of receiving? Sometimes receiving a gift can be difficult, especially when someone buys you a gift you don’t want. “I remember when I was about twelve years old, my parents bought me a purple wallet,” laughs Guo Xiaojing. “It really made me feel embarrassed, because to be honest, I thought the wallet was really ugly! Still, I pretended that I liked it because I knew it would make my parents happy.” Han Ling agrees. “That sounds like my grandparents. A few years ago, my grandparents gave me an orange sweater for my birthday. I used to wear it every time I visited their house, but when I left their house, I took it off! Of course, this made me feel guilty(内疚的). It was a very nice thought, but my grandparents and I have different tastes! I think it’s hard to buy clothes or other personal things for people.” To make things easier, some people would rather just give money. In some cultures, however, receiving money can make people uncomfortable. “When someone gives me money, it just makes me think they are being lazy”, says John Wilson.“In England, we have a saying: It’s the thought that counts. When someone gives me money, I feel they didn’t think at all. I prefer to receive a gift that has some thought behind it. I don’t mind if it’s something I don’t need. If someone has thought about a gift for me, it always makes me happy.” Different people have very different thoughts on this subject! So maybe the art of receiving is even more difficult than the art of giving. What do you think? 1.How did Guo Xiaojing feel when she received a purple wallet? 2.When did Han Ling wear the orange sweater? 3.Why do some people like to give money? 4.What gift does John Wilson like? 5.If you receive a gift from your parents, but you don’t like it, what will you do? 8 A teacher wants to help students with their study. She sets up a chat group (聊天群). Here is part of their chat history. Hey, everybody! Welcome to our chat group! Enjoy your sharing moment. Hi! I’ve been studying English since primary school. I used to get high marks in English, but now I’m having a lot of trouble with my listening. When I listen to native (本土的) English speakers talking in a video, I can catch only a few words so I can never quite get the main idea. Any advice? Listening to English radio programme helps me get used to how fast native speakers talk. I also repeat what I hear to help myself to experience the feeling of the language. Sometimes I even record my voice so I can listen to myself and compare my pronunciation with the radio host’s! My biggest headache is how to be polite in English. It’s so much easier to just say “Open the window!”, but in English that can sound really terrible. I have to think about who I’m talking to and then decide whether to say, “Open the window, please!” or “Could you open the window, please?” Yeah, that’s really hard! I think it all depends on who you’re talking to. If I’m talking to a close friend, I can use short requests, like “Open the window”—our relationship is close and we’re equals (同等的人), so I only need a few words to bridge the gap between us. But if I’m talking to someone who isn’t very close to me, I must make my request longer—and I must make it a question, not a demand (要求), e.g., “Could you open the window, please?” If I’m talking to someone senior to me, then I should say, “Would you mind opening the window, please?” For me, vocabulary is my biggest problem—there are just So MANY new words! I can’t keep all the new words straight in my head. HELP! 1.According to the article, is it polite to ask a stranger the way by saying “Show me the way to the bank.”? 2.How many problems are mentioned in the chat history? 3.What did they do in the discussion? 4.Please give Li Rui some advice on her problem. 【答案】1.Because small particles of rice can get into the phone and cause damage. 2. 【答案】1.It can make people interested./It is exciting./It makes people love the movie right away. 2.A short video makes it more convenient for us to get information./It would help people save time and money. 3.Because we may be misled by others’ opinions and miss some great movies. 4.We should watch a movie fully./It is better to watch a movie from the beginning to the end./We should go and see the complete movie ourselves to make our own judgment. 5.I like going to the cinema to watch a movie. (About 30 words) 【答案】1.No./No, it isn’t. 2.Three. 3.Share problems or experience on English learning and ask for advice as well as give others advice on English learning. 4.It is useful to connect the new words with the words you have leraned. What’s more, read more and write more, just as the saying goes, “Practice makes perfect.” The repetition is also good for your memorization. 【解析】本文展示了一个学生们的聊天历史,在聊天群中讨论了英语学习中遇到的问题。 1.根据表格最后一行“But if I’m talking to someone who isn’t very close to me, I must make my request longer—and I must make it a question, not a demand (要求)”可知,如果要有礼貌地向一个陌生人问事情,应用疑问句,而不是提出一个要求,此处应作否定回答,故填No./No, it isn’t. 2.根据表格第二行“but now I’m having a lot of trouble with my listening”,第三行“My biggest headache is how to be polite in English.”和第四行“For me, vocabulary is my biggest problem—there are just So MANY new words!”可知,聊天历史中提出了听力困扰、如何有礼貌的用英语表达以及词汇等3个问题。故填Three. 3.根据表格第二行“but now I’m having a lot of trouble with my listening”,第三行“Listening to English radio programme helps me get used to how fast native speakers talk.”,第三行“My biggest headache is how to be polite in English.”可知,在讨论中,大家提出问题,有人解决了问题,并提出了自己的新问题。故填Share problems or experience on English learning and ask for advice as well as give others advice on English learning. 4.开放性试题,言之有理即可。参考答案为It is useful to connect the new words with the words you have leraned.
