It all started on a quiet Sunday afternoon when Alex, a quiet writer, was walking through the park. He had been trying to finish his latest book for weeks, but nothing seemed to come to him. The idea of a peaceful walk felt like a good way to take a break from the struggle with his writing.
As he walked along the park's path, deep in thought a small dog appeared at his feet. The dog was just a few months old, looking up at him with big, sad eyes. Its fur (皮毛) was dirty, and it seemed hungry. Without thinking, Alex bent down and gave the dog a small piece of his sandwich, which the dog quickly ate.
The dog, wagging (摇摆) its tail, jumped up into Alex’s arms and licked (舔) his face as if to say thank you. For a moment, Alex didn’t know what to do. He had never been a dog person. He was used to the peace and quiet of his apartment, with no one around except for the characters in his stories. But as the dog was in his arms. Alex felt something warm in his heart.
“Well, I guess I can’t just leave you here,” Alex said quietly, looking around. No one seemed to be looking for the dog. Alex felt curious, “Could I really take this dog home? Would I be able to take care of it?”
After thinking for a moment, Alex made a decision. He couldn’t leave the dog alone. He gently placed the dog in his arms and returned home, not knowing that his life was about to change in ways he couldn't yet imagine.
At home, Alex stood in his small kitchen, looking at the dog. “kay,” Alex said to himself, walking back and forth, “What do dogs eat? Do I need to buy food? And … where’s its bed?” He looked around, but the room was quiet, and no answers came.

The waves were rising higher and higher. Sami thought, “How big the waves are!” He went into the house again and saw water coming in from all sides. He was scared.
Sami remembered his mother telling him long ago, “You must always get out of the house if the floods come too near.” He ran outside the house with Grandpa. But the water came surging in.

As the starting gun rang, I found myself among the sea of runners, my heart beating with a mix of excitement and anxiety. I had trained for months, preparing for the marathon that would test my limits and mark a big step in my sports journey. The first part of the run went quickly, and I felt good with my pace, breathing in the fresh air with every step.
However, as the sun climbed higher in the sky, the temperature started to go up, and the run began to make me tired. My legs felt heavier with each step, and I started to feel sick. Suddenly, I felt myself losing balance. Before I realized it, I had fallen onto the hot ground.
Everything was spinning (旋转) around me, but I could see someone coming closer. A runner from the pack (队伍) was at my side. “Are you OK?” he asked with a voice of concern. Without waiting for an answer, he helped me up to my feet and guided me to the medical aid station.
The doctors quickly checked how I was feeling. They gave me water and a break to ease my thirst and tiredness from the heat. As I drank water and put cold pads on my head, I started to feel better. The stranger, Alex, stayed by my side, giving me much comfort.

It was the time for Maria to step onto the stage, which was the moment she had expected for a long time. Maria’s hands started to shake. Sweat appeared on her forehead and her heart set about racing. She knew clearly that this was her moment to finish what her grandpa had started years ago. But as she was about to begin her performance, doubt came to her mind, “Can I really do this?”
Maria grew up alongside her grandpa who was always lost in the world of piano music, and she fell in love with it from an early age. Her grandpa was happy to teach her to play the piano. Whenever Maria started to worry about making mistakes, her grandpa would tell her to just immerse (使沉浸) herself in the music. Her grandpa’s words could always calm her down.
Three years ago, Maria’s grandpa passed away. His room was filled with lots of old sheet music. Maria’s fingers ran over the yellowed notes on the final page of her grandpa’s unfinished piano music, which he had been working on until the last day of his life. While Maria was looking at the incomplete work, a fire was lit within her. “I will finish it. I have to,” Maria told herself.
Days turned into weeks as Maria lost herself in her grandpa’s world. She read his notes and listened to the recordings of his other works, trying to get his voice. The melody (旋律) was all she could think about. It played in her dreams and rang in her waking hours.
There were times when Maria felt very sad and hopeless, especially when the notes wouldn’t come. She also doubted herself when she couldn’t finish it perfectly. But then there were moments of pure joy when the music flowed through her as if her grandpa was guiding her.

It was a sunny day. James Dotson was laboring in his garden when a loud, painful cry came from the woods behind his home. Realizing something wrong must have happened, he rushed towards the woods quickly. Soon he found an injured baby deer lying in a pit (深坑), one of his skinny legs bleeding. So weak was the little deer that it didn’t have the strength to move when Dotson approached. He squatted (蹲下) and stretched out his hands to the deer with great care and pulled it up.
As he carried the little deer towards their home, his daughter Maggie rushed outside and greeted her father with great excitement.
“Wow, a deer! What happened to him, Daddy?” asked Maggie.
“Well, the poor deer’ left leg is hurt badly.” Mr. Dotson said gently while walking into the sitting room.
Maggie followed her father to take a better look. “Poor little deer. Can we keep him, Daddy? And I will call him Paxton.”
“That’s a fine name for a deer, Maggie. We’ll do everything we can to help him,” smiled Mr. Dotson. “But we can’t keep him. He’s a wild animal.”
After Mr. Dotson carefully placed the little deer on the floor, he asked Maggie to go to the kitchen and get his medical bag. The little deer was in luck. He was being attended to by James Dotson, the local Veterinarian.
In a flash, Maggie rushed outside carrying his medical bag and a small carrot she had grabbed from the refrigerator. Maggie handed her father the bag and then placed the carrot by Paxton’s mouth, but the poor creature wasn’t interested. It was so unsettled, hardly able to eat anything and had such an air of sadness on its face. Maggie was worried and sad. However, her father convinced her that Paxton would be ok.

I had a scheduled surgery around the holidays, so my family helped get the house ready for Christmas. In no time at all, the tree was standing with lights and ribbon in place, awaiting the decorations. My husband brought out my carefully stored box. This ordinary box doesn’t look like anything special from the outside, but the inside is filled with treasures from years gone by.
Ever since my kids were small, I would gather them around the tree and tell them the story behind each decoration as they picked a special place to hang it. They were all teenagers with busy work and sports schedules now, but I still wanted to hold tight to our family tradition and decorate the tree together. It took three ridiculously long weeks for that day to come around. When did this get so difficult to arrange? With eager expectation, I got everything out, put on the Christmas music, got the hot chocolate ready, and plugged in all the twinkly lights.
Just as I was ready to call everyone in, our youngest son said basketball practice got moved up. My daughter texted that she might have to stay late at work. And, of course, one of our kids came home not feeling well.
I turned off the music while everyone scattered (分散). I was sad that our plans fell apart after waiting for so long to pull them together. As I was eating my dinner filled with sense of loss, I heard a ping on my phone. My son texted that practice was cut short due to incoming snow. Ping! My daughter was on her way home from work. I called my oldest son at the gym, and he said he’d cut his workout short and head back. That night everyone would be home within the hour. I felt we would have the chance to carry out our practice. After eating together happily, I announced to the family that we would begin our practice.

Anna’s Miracle
Anna loved to dance, who had been dancing since she was three years old. She dreamed of becoming a professional ballet dancer. She practiced every day with her teacher and her friends. Anna’s parents were proud of her, but they were also worried. They knew dancing was a demanding job for Anna, who had been born with a weak leg and had to wear a brace (支架) to support it. She had to work harder than other dancers, and she had to endure a lot of pain.
Anna’s parents wanted her to be happy, but they also wanted her to be realistic. They told her dancing was just a hobby. They said dancing was too risky, and that she should have other options. Anna understood her parents’ concerns, but she did not want to give up on her dream. She believed she could make it if she worked hard enough. She did not want to let her weak leg stop her from pursuing her dream.

Anna was excited, and she told her parents about it. She asked them if they could take her to New York for the audition.

When I started my second year of high school, an exciting opportunity came my way: a year-long exchange program in Bath, England. The thought of studying abroad filled me with both excitement and anticipation (期盼). The chance to experience a new culture, improve my English, and make international friends seemed like a dream that comes true.
I managed to apply for a host family, read about rules and how to survive homesickness, and research about Bath on the Internet. With all preparations made, I was on a plane to Bath, my heart racing with a mix of eagerness and nerves.
Upon arrival, the picturesque city with its historic architecture and beautiful streets attracted me. My host family, Mr Smith, Mrs Smith and their son Mark, welcomed me warmly, which immediately put me at ease. After my settlement at their home, I quickly found comfort in my new surroundings.
Then came my first week at school, which, however, turned out to be a whirlwind (一片忙乱) besides a feeling of freshness. The education system was different from what I was used to in my hometown. Classes were more discussion-based and I was encouraged to express my opinions, which I wasn’t comfortable with at first. My teachers and classmates were friendly and curious about my background, often asking questions about my life in China. However, I struggled to keep up with the fast-paced (快节奏的) conversations. The British accent, with its unique slang (俚语), often made it hard for me to understand. There were moments in class when I felt lost, unable to fully understand the discussions or contribute meaningfully. This was frustrating (令人沮丧的), as I had always been a top student back home.
Along with the new experience at school, homesickness began to set in. I missed my family, friends, and the familiar rhythm (节奏) of life back in China. The cultural differences, from food to social rules, made me hard to get used to at times. I found myself missing a taste of my home, both physically and mentally.

The Quiet Bloom
Max was a quiet boy who kept to himself. He avoided eye contact, whispered in class, and sat alone at lunch. His classmates would often make fun of him, calling him “shy guy” or “quiet quake”. Max felt like he was not important, as if no one truly saw him for who he was, and those who did took pleasure in his discomfort. He spent most of his days trying to hide in the background, wishing he could just disappear.
One day, while walking through the school garden after class, Max came across a small plant. Its leaves were yellow and curled, its stem (茎) weak and bent. It seemed like the plant had given up. Max stopped for a moment, crouching (蹲下) down beside it. Something about its struggle to survive touched him deeply. He saw in the plant a reflection of his own quiet battle — against feeling unnoticed, against being misunderstood. Without much thought, Max gently dug it out from the dirt, holding it in his hands.
Taking the plant home, Max carefully placed it by his window, where the sun was brightest. He read up on how to care for it, learning about the right amount of water, the importance of pruning, and how plants needed both light and love to grow better. At first, he wasn’t sure what would happen. The plant looked dying, so close to giving up. But Max couldn’t shake the feeling that if he cared for it, if he gave it a little patience, it might survive.
Days turned into weeks, and Max’s efforts began to pay off. The plant, once lifeless, slowly began to show signs of recovery. The leaves turned a brighter green, the stem thickened, and tiny new buds (花蕾) began to form. Max found joy in the little changes-watching the plant grow was like watching something inside of him change, too.

It was a bright and sunny Saturday morning, and Emily was filled with expectation as she prepared to ride bikes with her friends. The destination was a newly opened park in their town, a place that had gained much excitement and curiosity among the local people. Emily’s bike, a stylish black mountain bike, was her most cherished possession, one she had saved up for over several months to purchase.
Upon arriving at the park, the group was immediately attracted by its breathtaking beauty. The green trees stretched up towards the sky, with their leaves shining in the sunlight. Colorful flowers decorated the landscape, their petals (花瓣) dancing gently in the breeze. The winding paths, lined with charming scenery, waved them to explore and discover the wonders that lay within. Emily and her friends eagerly rode their bikes along these paths, their laughter echoing through the air.
However, their joy was suddenly covered by a loud noise that came from behind Emily. She swiftly turned her head to witness her friend Jack, who had unfortunately fallen off his bike and was now lying on the ground, holding his knee in obvious pain. Emily, without any delay, got off her bike and rushed to Jack’s side. Her voice, with great concern, echoed through the air as she asked, “Are you okay?”
Jack, with his face pale and tears in eyes, shook his head in response. “I think I have injured my knee,” he said, with the pain in his voice. Emily, realizing the bad situation, knew that they needed to seek help immediately. Yet, she was also aware that Jack was in no condition to walk or ride his bike.

【答案】
Alex took a deep breath and decided to start with the basics: food. He found a can of tuna in the cupboard, opened it, and put it in a bowl. The dog sniffed it for a moment and then ate it quickly. Alex felt a little better. At least the dog was eating. But the next few days were not easy. Alex wasn’t ready for how much care and attention the dog needed. It barked at every little noise, and needed to go for walks at times. Alex felt very tired, but he also found happiness while walking the dog.
Slowly, Alex discovered that having the dog around made his days brighter. It seemed to know when Alex needed comfort. It would sit quietly beside Alex during long hours of writing. Its presence seemed to unlock a new part of Alex’s creativity. The writer’s block Alex had struggled with for so long started to lift. Ideas flowed more easily, and he felt a newfound sense of inspiration. As Alex typed the final words of his novel, the dog lay sleeping peace fully at his feet. Alex smiled and whispered. “We did it, buddy. We made it through.”

【答案】One possible version:
Grandpa held Sami’s hand tightly, but a huge wave separated them. Sami was swept away, struggling to keep his head above the water, his heart pounding with fear. Through the chaos, he saw Grandpa, who was swimming steadily toward Betu, the big palm tree that stood like a giant in the storm. Despite the strong waves pushing against him, Grandpa never stopped, finally reaching the tree and holding onto it tightly. Seeing Grandpa safe, Sami felt his fear fade, replaced by a glimmer of hope. He knew he had to be brave, just like Grandpa.
“Sami, come to me, quickly,” Grandpa cried, holding the tree. Spotting a piece of wood floating nearby, Sami grabbed it and used it to push himself toward Grandpa. The waves tried to pull him back, but he fought harder, refusing to give up. Grandpa stretched out his hand, his eyes filled with hope, as if saying, “You can do it!” With one last try, Sami caught Grandpa’s hand, and they clung to the tree, shaking but safe. As the waves crashed around them, Sami realized something: these trees, which Grandpa had planted years ago, had become their lifeline. He promised himself to protect the trees and the environment, just as Grandpa had always taught him.

【答案】
I looked at Alex, really thankful. “Thank you,” I managed to say. “I wouldn’t have made it without you.” Alex just smiled, his eyes kind and encouraging. “We’re all in this together,” he replied. Feeling more determined, I chose to keep running the race, even if it meant finishing at a slower pace. Alex, who first thought of running without me, decided to stay with me. Together, we picked up our pace to the finish line, and our friendship started to build with each shared mile. The cheers from the crowd celebrating the crossing of the finish line grew louder and clearer.
In the last few minutes, we ran towards the finish line hand in hand. Though we didn’t cross the finish line ahead of the pack, we received the warmest applause, because we had won something far more valuable — a friendship that was built on the understanding of what it means to support one another in the face of difficulty.

【答案】
Maria was brought back to the present by the cheers from the audience. She walked onto the stage, but the worries over possible mistakes made it hard for her to breathe. To finish the music was the dream of her grandpa and the reward for her own sweat and tears. Thinking of that, she took a deep breath and remembered her grandpa’s words: “Music isn’t about perfection, Maria. It’s about passion, about putting your soul into every note.” With a peace of mind, she moved to the piano, ready to put on the performance.
Maria gently placed her fingers on the keys. She felt she saw her grandpa’s smile in her mind’s eye. It seemed that the music was telling a story of love that was beyond time. Maria was lost in the beauty of the music and the memory of her grandpa. When the final note faded away, there was a moment of silence. Then the audience jumped and cheered. Tears streamed down Maria’s face. “I have realized my grandpa’s unfinished dream,” she said to herself.

【答案】One possible version:
Paxton was taken good care of in their home. Mr. Dotson attended to Paxton’s injured leg. Maggie never left home without feeding him first thing every morning. With time and effort, not only did the deer get his strength back, but he began to eat carrots right out of Maggie’s hand. Everything went on well until Mr. Dotson said it was time to set Paxton free. Maggie shook her head and refused. Patting her gently on the head Mr. Dotson said, “Paxton needs to be with his parents, just like you. You love Paxton and wish him happy, right?” Maggie seemingly understood and nodded her head.
Now it was time to send Paxton to where it belonged—nature. Paxton walked into the woods with Mr. Dotson and Maggie, running and jumping. Maggie kissed Paxton, “It’s time for you to reunite with your parents. I will miss you, Paxton.” Away ran Paxton quickly. Maggie couldn’t help crying. Suddenly, she found Paxton stopped in his tracks and looked back at her as if trying to convey deep, unspoken gratitude. After a few seconds, he disappeared into the woods. Bathed in the golden sunlight, and hugged tightly by her father, Maggie finally understood the true meaning of love.

【答案】One possible version:
But their responses were disappointing. I felt a pang of sadness, realizing how much things had changed since they were little. The sweet moments of our past seemed to have slipped away. Determined to keep the tradition alive, I carefully opened the box of decorations and began to share the stories behind each one. As I held up the tiny wooden snowman my youngest had made in kindergarten, I saw a flicker of interest in their eyes. Slowly, they started to listen, their initial reluctance giving way to curiosity.
With the story behind the decorations told, they became excited. One by one, they began to join in, carefully selecting ornaments and finding the perfect spots on the tree. My youngest son even laughed as he recalled how he had insisted on placing the snowman front and center every year. My daughter smiled as she hung the glittery star, reminiscing about our first family vacation. As we worked together, I felt a deep sense of relief and joy. This tradition was now stronger than ever. It reminded me that, no matter how busy life gets, these moments of connection are what truly matter.

As his plant grew better, so did Max. Max began to smile more and even participate in class discussions. His classmates observed that Max was no longer the quiet boy who kept to himself but someone who had found a bit of confidence. Max realized that like his plant, he needed care and attention. He joined the school’s gardening club, where he could meet others who shared his interest. The club members welcomed him warmly, and Max slowly became friends with them. His confidence grew, much like the plant that thrived under his careful attention.
One afternoon, the school principal announced a gardening competition. Max’s eyes lit up at the announcement. He entered the competition with his once struggling plant, now blooming beautifully. The judges were impressed by his dedication and the transformation of the plant. When the results were announced, Max won first place. The applause from his classmates echoed in his ears, and for the first time, Max felt truly seen and appreciated. The plant had not only grown but had also helped Max bloom, teaching him that with a little love and care, anyone could find their place in the sun.

【答案】
Without hesitation, Emily made a quick decision. She told the other friends to stay with Jack while she rode to the park entrance to find help. Pushing her pedals with all her might, Emily sped through the paths. Her heart pounded with worry as she scanned the area for any signs of park staff. Finally, she spotted a park ranger’s office. She rushed in breathless, and explained Jack’s situation. The ranger immediately radioed for a medical team and a wheelchair.
Shortly after, the rescue arrived. The medical team quickly examined Jack’s knee, reassuring him that it wasn’t a serious injury. They carefully helped Jack into the wheelchair and wheeled him towards the park’s medical center. Emily and her friends followed closely behind. At the medical center, Jack was treated and bandaged up. His pain had subsided, and he looked at Emily with gratitude. “Thanks to you, Emily” he said. Emily smiled, and relieved that her quick thinking had helped her friend in time.
