It was January in Kansas. The snowstorm hit, cutting off our power. So, though it was around noon, we were put into darkness. No television, no heat, no light. No nothing. This was back in the days when people had only radios to listen to.
Granddad Charlie gathered up his winter coat, scarf, and gloves, and disappeared into the snow. A few minutes later, he returned, with wood under his arms. Looking at my brother and me, he said, “Come on, boys. Time to build a fire.”
But the curiosity for the fire wasn’t enough to keep the attention of a 7-year-old boy and a 5-year-old boy, and we were soon badgering Grandpa repeatedly as to what was next. “There’s no TV, Grandpa,” I complained, “What are we going to do?”
“Let’s go camping.” Grandpa answered.
We ran upstairs to get our sleeping bags, pillows, and stuffed animals back. When we returned, Grandpa had rearranged the furniture, clearing an open space in front of the fire. In short order, we had a fine campground.
“Now then,” Grandpa began, opening a strange-looking game board, “who’s up for a little game of checkers?”
For the next hour or so, Grandpa taught us on the fine art of playing checkers. I became a fair player after losing four games in a row. Then, surprisingly, I beat Grandpa. When I asked him if he had let me win, he merely smiled.
Checkers was soon followed up with hangman. Afterward, Grandpa found his old, weathered guitar and sang us some campfire songs, the words to which my brother and I did not know but to which we sang along.
And right then, something terrible happened. The power came back on.
Mom and Dad gave a cheer. But for my brother and me, it was the end of a grand adventure. We stood there, speechless. Grandpa looked at us, smiled, and then slowly, he walked across the room and turned the light off.
4. Which is TRUE according to the first 3 paragraphs?
A. The children were curious about building the fire.
B. The story happened on a cold winter evening.
C The children were excited about the power failure.
D. The children didn’t like the fire and couldn’t wait to go camping.
5. Why did Grandpa turn off the light in the last paragraph?
A To create a sense of holiday. B. To save as much energy as he can.
C. To remind the family to go to bed. D. To maintain a camp atmosphere.
6. Which of the following best describes Grandpa?
A. Imaginative and brave. B. Caring and understanding.
C. Intelligent and curious. D. Experienced and generous.
7. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Our Respectable Grandpa B. Our Harmonious Family
C. An Unforgettable Camping D. A Terrible Snowstorm
C
Conversations are like two-way streets: we take turns speaking and listening. While we often focus on what we say, there’s something effective in the act of listening. It can build trust, strengthen social relationships, and deepen our understanding of the world around us. So, it’s no surprise that when we think of listening, positive words like trust, respect, understanding and growth come to mind.
But here’s where it gets difficult — being a good listener isn’t easy. It can cause emotional tiredness, especially in tough conversations. Think about the last time someone expressed their disappointment or shared their pain with you. How did you feel?
My co-workers and I recently explored the downsides of listening in a study with school teachers. We found the more effort teachers put into listening, the more they reported feeling burned out.
Why does this happen? For teachers, listening isn't just about hearing words — it also means taking in their students’ emotional challenges, disappointments and struggles, especially when teachers feel responsible for solving problems they may have no way or time to deal with. Over time, this emotional pressure increases, leading to burnout finally.
And this isn’t just a problem for teachers, it affects all of us. Whether we're parents, partners, friends, or co-workers, we all find ourselves in situations where we have to listen to others’ worries and stresses since we' re continuously connected and expected to be there for others.
So, how can we listen without burning out?
First, focus on listening without planning your response. This keeps you there and allows the speaker to feel truly heard. Second, understand that sometimes just listening is beneficial — don’t feel responsible to fix the problem unless you’re asked for advice. Finally, don't always feel like you have to respond or paraphrase. While paraphrasing can be helpful in many situations, when someone is sharing a really bad experience, like the loss of a loved one, mirroring those emotions back to them may only deepen their pain.
8. What can listening bring us according to paragraph 1?
A. Physical growth. B. Good relationship. C. Economic support. D. Professional knowledge.
9. What does the underlined word “downsides” in paragraph 3 mean?
A. Methods. B. Results. C. Challenges. D. Disadvantages.
10. In the study, why did teachers feel burnout?
A. They failed to understand students’ struggles.
B. They were forced to solve students’ challenges.
C. They heard too many students’ emotional problems.
D. They suffered growing stress for not helping students out.
11. What is suggested for listening?
A. Listen without doing anything else. B. Repeat someone’s problem to themselves.
C. Solve the speaker’s problem immediately. D. Think about your answer while listening.
D
Recently, Florida and California have both passed laws that limit the use of smartphones in public schools. This move is welcome as they reflect a growing awareness that it is unhealthy for young people to spend all day looking at phones. The laws limiting phone usage, however, tend to be broad, filled with exceptions. At the same time, private schools have pushed ahead with their own rules, which are typically more comprehensive (详尽的) than the well-meaning but ineffective laws made by state governments.
Half-hearted laws, especially those that place the burden (负担) on teachers, are almost useless. The enforcement (执行) of these laws often leaves teachers in challenging positions. For example, a teacher told a case where a parent listened to a classroom discussion through their child’s phone and immediately emailed a complaint about the lesson. Young people respond best to rules that are simple, clear and easy to follow. Plus, teachers should not be expected to announce the rules before every class. Strict limitations set clear expectations for students and help them work together better without overburdening already busy teachers.
The arguments against strict phone bans (禁令),on the other hand, are unpersuasive (没有说服力). Parents are concerned about locking up phones in case of an emergency, but classroom rules shouldn’t be designed around unlikely disasters. Students are also free to keep low-tech phones for emergency situations. A student from Oregon complained of having trouble finding friends in the lunchroom after her school banned phones. High schoolers who need to get in touch with mom and dad say they’re confused about the school’s old-fashioned rules.
The passing of the laws is a hopeful sign that schools are finally waking up to the dangers of smartphone overuse. The perfect treatment, however, is sadly lacking.
12. How are the rules made by private schools different from government laws?
A. They sound broader. B. They are ill-meaning.
C. They are welcomed by students. D. They produce better results.
13. In paragraph 2, the author mentions the example to explain that ______.
A. parents should stop complaining about children’s class
B. governments should set clear and direct phone bans
C. teachers should carry out strict enforcement of phone use
D. students should work together without teachers’ help
14. In paragraph 3, parents are against banning phones because of their children’s ______.
A. difficulty in acquiring low-tech phones B. trouble in making friends without phones
C. need to use phones in emergency situations D. confusion about schools’ old-fashioned rules
15. What is the author’s attitude towards the laws limiting phone usage?
A. Unclear. B. Objective. C. Confused. D. Supportive.

Last Saturday, Jordon was taking a walk in the park near his home when he noticed a woman with a boy of about seven years old. When Jordon passed them, he heard the woman yell, “How stupid you are! You are good at nothing.” Jordon stopped and looked at the little boy. The boy said nothing. He just stood there, looking upset.
Jordon was reminded of his English teacher Mrs Mary in middle school. He was often told that he was good at nothing. But one day it all changed. One day, in an English writing class, Mrs Mary asked them to read a novel. They were asked to write a new chapter of the novel after they finished reading the book. A few days later, Jordon handed in his story. But the next day to his surprise, the comment (评价) “well done” from Mrs Mary came into view the moment he turned to the page where the story was written. When Jordon read that, he almost burst into tears. That day after he returned home, he wrote a short story and gave it to Mrs Mary the next morning. And again he was praised.
Jordon became very interested in writing. He often wrote short stories and asked Mrs Mary to read them and correct them for him. Mrs Mary always corrected them for him and gave him good advice to improve them. One year later, he was no longer that boy who lacked self-confidence. He gained his confidence and was hopeful about his future. Several years after graduating from college, he had his first book published and became famous as a writer in his country. And he owed his success to Mrs Mary’s encouragement. Without her encouragement, his life might be very different now.
注意:续写词数应80—100词左右;续写内容为一段;
Encouraged by his own life story, Jordon decided to do something for that boy.

C. The children were excited about the power failure.
D. The children didn’t like the fire and couldn’t wait to go camping.
5. Why did Grandpa turn off the light in the last paragraph?
A. To create a sense of holiday. B. To save as much energy as he can.
C. To remind the family to go to bed. D. To maintain a camp atmosphere.
6. Which of the following best describes Grandpa?
A. Imaginative and brave. B. Caring and understanding.
C. Intelligent and curious. D. Experienced and generous.
7. What is a suitable title for the text?
A. Our Respectable Grandpa B. Our Harmonious Family
C. An Unforgettable Camping D. A Terrible Snowstorm
A 5. D 6. B 7. C
由文章第三段中“But the curiosity for the fire wasn’t enough to keep the attention of a 7-year-old boy and a 5-year-old boy, and we were soon badgering Grandpa repeatedly as to what was next. (但对生火好奇不足以吸引住一个七岁男孩和一个五岁男孩的注意力,我们很快就不断地追问爷爷接下来要做什么)”可知,小孩们对生火有好奇心。故选A。
根据文章倒数第二段“And right then, something terrible happened. The power came back on. (就在那时,发生了一件糟糕的事情——电来了)”和最后一段中“But for my brother and me, it was the end of a grand adventure. We stood there, speechless. Grandpa looked at us, smiled, and then slowly, he walked across the room and turned the light off. (但对于我和哥哥来说,这意味着一次伟大冒险的结束。我们站在那里,说不出话来。爷爷看着我们,笑了,然后慢慢走过房间,关掉了灯)”可知,恢复供电打断了男孩们的游戏,男孩们非常失望,于是祖父慢慢地走到房间的另一侧去关了灯。由此可以推断出,祖父理解孩子们想继续玩的想法,因此关掉灯给他们保持露营的氛围。故选D。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中“Granddad Charlie gathered up his winter coat, scarf, and gloves, and disappeared into the snow. (查理爷爷收拾好冬衣、围巾和手套,消失在雪地里)”和倒数第四段中“For the next hour or so, Grandpa taught us on the fine art of playing checkers. (在接下来的一个多小时里,爷爷教我们下跳棋的艺术)”以及文章最后一段中“We stood there, speechless. Grandpa looked at us, smiled, and then slowly, he walked across the room and turned the light off. (我们站在那里,说不出话来。爷爷看着我们,笑了笑,然后慢慢地穿过房间,把灯关掉了)”可知,为了不让孩子们无聊,祖父在暴风雪的日子陪着孩子们一起在室内生火、露营、做游戏。可以推断出,祖父是个体贴又善解人意的人。故选B。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。通读全文,尤其是由文章第一段“It was January in Kansas. The snowstorm hit, cutting off our power. So, though it was around noon, we were put into darkness. No television, no heat, no light. No nothing. This was back in the days when people had only radios to listen to. (那是在堪萨斯州的一月份。暴风雪来了,切断了我们的电源。所以,虽然是在中午左右,我们却陷入了黑暗之中。没有电视,没有暖气,没有光。什么都没有。那是在人们只能听收音机的时候)”和第四段““Let’s go camping.” Grandpa answered. (“我们去露营吧。”爷爷回答道)”可知,文章主要讲述在暴风雪且又停电的日子,祖父在房子里生起火来和两个男孩一起露营,做游戏唱歌的故事。所以这是一个非比寻常又难忘的露营。C选项“An Unforgettable Camping (一次难忘的露营)”符合题意。故选C。

B 9. D 10. D 11. A

A. Unclear. B. Objective. C. Confused. D. Supportive.
D 13. B 14. C 15. B

Strict limitations set clear expectations for students and help them work together better without overburdening already busy teachers.(年轻人对简单、清晰、容易遵守的规则反应最好。

You might say “to get exercise” and you’d be right. To have fun? That’s true, too. But there’s more.”(为什么运动? 下文“According to the Women’s Sports Foundation, girls who play sports get a lot more than just a good figure.”(根据女子运动基金会的说法,参加运动的女孩不只是身材好。) D.“In fact, there are at least 5 more reasons.”(事实上,至少还有5个原因。)
2.根据上文“Girls who play sports do better in school. You might think that playing sports will take up all your study time.”(做运动的女孩在学校表现更好。 下文“Exercise improves learning, memory, and concentration, which can give active girls an advantage in the classroom.”(锻炼可以提高学习能力、记忆力和注意力,这可以让活跃的女孩在课堂上占有优势。) G项“But research shows girls who play sports do better in school than those who don’t.”(但研究表明,参加体育运动的女孩比不参加体育运动的女孩在学校表现更好。)
下文“When you work with coaches, trainers, and teammates to win games and achieve goals, you’re learning how be successful.
根据下文“Playing sports can reduce stress and help you feel a little happier.”(运动可以减少压力,帮助你感觉更快乐。) A项“Exercise cuts the pressure.”(运动减少压力)切题。故选A。

Glad to learn that you are organizing a friendly sports match in your class, I think soccer is a good choice.
Several reasons account for my recommendation. First, as a popular sport in UK, soccer would definitely appeal to most English teenagers. Second, soccer is a sport requiring teamwork, which is of great benefit to our sense of cooperation. What’s more, playing soccer can help us stretch our muscles and improve our body’s range of movement, making a well-built figure.

She realized that she shouldn’t have called her son stupid. She said, “Thank you for your advice. I’ll find out what he’s good at and encourage him.” The woman then left with the boy. Looking at them, Jordon felt relieved, hoping he could make some difference to the boy.
