So whether you’re in your youth or you want to help someone you love, these are some of the best mental health websites for young people. YoungMinds Even if you’re not in the UK, YoungMinds gives you access to a library of helpful advice, information, support, and resources. Please choose whether you are a parent, you work with young people, or you are a young person yourself. From there you can use various helplines, read real stories, and learn more about mental health conditions. There is even a YoungMinds online store where you can buy fun clothing, postcards, and prints. ReachOut ReachOut offers something for everyone, whether you’re a young person looking for help or a parent. Do you need help with mental health issues such as addiction, self-harm, or anxiety? ReachOut has got you covered. But what makes ReachOut so special is that it offers an online community of young people and free chats with a peer (同龄人) worker. 1. What is special about YoungMinds? A. It only serves British users. B. It works with a local library. C. It asks users to share stories. D. It sells various goods online. 2. What do the three websites have in common? A. They welcome teens and parents. B. They offer free chats with peers. C. They hire famous psychologists. D. They have a column for parents. 3. What is the purpose of the text? A. To report. B. To inform. C. To analyse. D. To describe. B I’m a zoologist and director of the Sloth (树懒) Conservation Foundation in Puerto Viejo de Talamanca, Costa Rica. I’m equipping the world’s slowest mammal with data-logging backpacks to better understand sloths’ behaviour. It’s surprisingly hard to catch a sloth. Although they’re slow — very, very slow — if you climb a tree to catch one, it will move along to the next tree. Once you climb the new tree, it will move back again. My team do this regularly, as we conduct the Sloth Backpack Project, a data-logging organization here in Costa Rica, where many sloths co-exist with people. In 2017, I wanted to do more than research, so I started the Sloth Conservation Foundation. Now, I’m fitting a backpack to a brown-throated three-fingered sloth that we named Baguette, after a nearby bakery. The backpack will collect data on her location, movement and living patterns. We had found Baguette about 20 minutes earlier, balancing at the top of construction fencing as she attempted to escape two bulls. Baguette wasn’t all that grateful. She’s an old girl. She’s old: she’s missing fingers, and she’s got scars on her face. I admire and envy sloths. They’re a powerful symbol of the slowness that our society needs more of. They don’t let anything stress them out unless it’s really important — they just get on with life. This year, I received a £50,000 Future For Nature award, which we will use to train a dog to detect sloth feces (粪便). We can use feces as a sign for sloth numbers and locations in the region, and eventually work out the boundaries of the species, how fast the populations are declining and which conservation measures work. I’m happy I’ve moved away from academia (学术界) — I can put all my energy into conservation. That’s what I feel ecology should focus on — how we can use what we’re learning to give back to other species. 4. What’s the function of data-logging backpacks? A. To help sloths to climb. B. To hold important books. C. To study sloths’ behaviour. D. To protect a sloth from its enemies. 5. Why was Baguette at the top of construction fencing? A. The author injured her face. B. She was there just for a rest. C. The author got too close to her. D. She was trying to keep herself safe. 6. What’s the author’s attitude toward sloths’ slowness? A. Appreciative. B. Regretful. C. Annoyed. D. Amused. 7. The author will make use of sloths’ feces to . A. train the dog for her study B. help with their conservation C. study more animals in the future D. donate to an academic institution C Ponds are a rich source of biodiversity, providing natural environments for many rare and endangered species, including plants, insects, birds and bats. Ponds show far greater variation than rivers and streams. Yet, for a century or so, ponds have been ignored by scientists. Why have we overlooked such a significant part of the natural world? A key reason appears to be the cognitive bias (认知偏见) where we assume that if something is small, it can’t be all that important. Rather than study ponds, biologists in the past typically headed for the largest lake or river they could find. Most of us also devalue ponds because we assume they are human-made habitats and don’t realize that these waters have a deeply ancient origin. Ponds have clearly existed on Earth as long as there has been land and water and the geological record shows they have been a long-lasting presence. Ignoring ponds within science has had a big impact on our ability to protect their wildlife. It has created a world view in which policy-makers can simply ignore the big networks of ponds that make up so much of the global water environment. In Europe, for example, the Water Framework Directive mostly excludes any bodies of water smaller than 50 hectares. Fortunately, views are changing. Last year, the Ramsar Convention, an international agreement, introduced a resolution (决议) on small wetlands, including ponds, giving more recognition to them. And the European Union-funded PONDERFUL project is gathering data on Europe’s ponds. However, if we want to make use of the biodiversity power that ponds offer, there remains much to do. In a world where fresh water faces big challenges, creating and protecting ponds provides a ray of hope: a piece of natural ecological engineering we can easily achieve to help support biodiversity. 8. What can be learned about ponds from paragraph 1? A. They are difficult to research. B. They fail to get due attention. C. They are too small to support wildlife. D. They have greater importance than rivers. 9. What does the cognitive bias assume? A. Ponds are short-lived. B. Rivers are fully-developed. C. Small things are unimportant. D. Natural habitats are unnoticed. 10. Why is the Water Framework Directive mentioned in paragraph 3? A. To solve a problem. B. To present a fact. C. To prove a point. D. To make a comparison. 11. What does the author imply in the last paragraph? A. Exploring ponds has a long way to go. B. Ecological diversity is easy to realize. C. Fresh water supply can meet our needs. D. Building ponds can promote economy. D Everyone looks forward to progress, whether in one’s personal life or in the general society. Progress must lead to a better life and a better way of doing things. All these, however, remain true only in so far as people want to accept technology and move forward by finding new and more efficient (高效的) ways of doing things. However, at the back of the minds of many people, especially those who miss the “good old days”, efficiency comes with a price. When communication becomes more efficient, people are able to contact one another no matter where they are and at whatever time they wish to. The click of a button allows people miles apart to talk or see each other without even leaving their homes. With the communication gadgets, such as mobile phones and tablets, people often do not take the efforts to visit one another personally. With efficiency also comes mass production. Factories have improved efficiency because many tasks are left to machines. However, with the improvements in efficiency also comes the loss of the personal touch when making these products. For example, many handicrafts (手工艺品) are now produced in a factory. Mass production lowers the quality of the handicraft and it is difficult to find unique designs on each item. However, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. It is only with progress and the invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state. New technology is required for old products to stay old. It is people’s attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society. Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of making use of it. Everything depends on people’s attitude. When we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs a new “past” is created. 12. What does the underlined word “gadgets” in Paragraph 2 mean? A. Skills. B. Messages. C. Devices. D. Barriers. 13. What is Paragraph 3 mainly about? A. The process of mass production. B. The unique designs of handicrafts. C. The disadvantages of mass production. D. The function of technology in mass production. 14. What can be learned about technology from Paragraph 4? A. It can sometimes slow social progress. B. It can destroy old traditions. C. It can be used to protect old products. D. It can be used to correct mistakes. 15. What can be concluded from the last paragraph? A. Technology can create a new past. B. Progress can suit the needs of daily life. C. People review the past with great regret. D People’s attitude decides the use of technology. Ways to protect your personal information online It’s hard to scan the news without hearing about a major data leakage, potentially exposing millions of customers’ personal data to criminals. ____16____. A. train the dog for her study B. help with their conservation C. study more animals in the future D. donate to an academic institution 【答案】4. C 5. D 6. A 7. 根据首段中的“I’m equipping the world’s slowest mammal with data-logging backpacks to better understand sloths’ behaviour.(我正在为世界上行动最缓慢的哺乳动物装备数据记录背包,以便更好地了解树懒的行为)”可知,作者正在为树懒装上数据记录背包,目的是更好地研究树懒的行为。 根据第三段中的“We had found Baguette about 20 minutes earlier, balancing at the top of construction fencing as she attempted to escape two bulls. They’re a powerful symbol of the slowness that our society needs more of. They don’t let anything stress them out unless it’s really important — they just get on with life.(我羡慕并欣赏树懒。它们是我们社会需要更多拥有的慢节奏生活的强大象征。除非真的非常重要,否则没有什么能让它们感到压力——它们只是继续生活)”可知,作者很赏识树懒能对抗压力的精神,因为这是我们这个社会所需要的。故选A项。 根据尾段中的“We can use feces as a sign for sloth numbers and locations in the region, and eventually work out the boundaries of the species, how fast the populations are declining and which conservation measures work.(我们可以利用粪便作为树懒数量和位置的指标,并最终确定物种的边界,种群下降的速度以及哪些保护措施有效)”可知,作者将利用树懒的粪便来帮助树懒的保护工作。故选B项。 C Ponds are a rich source of biodiversity, providing natural environments for many rare and endangered species, including plants, insects, birds and bats. B 9. C 10. C 11. 根据文章第一段末尾句内容“Yet, for a century or so, ponds have been ignored by scientists.(然而,大约一个世纪以来,池塘一直被科学家们所忽视。)” 根据文章第二段内容“A key reason appears to be the cognitive bias where we assume that if something is small, it can’t be all that important.(一个关键原因似乎是认知偏见,我们认为如果某物很小,就不可能那么重要。)” 分析前后文语境可知,该内容的前一句“It has created a world view in which policy-makers can simply ignore the big networks of ponds that make up so much of the global water environment.(它创造了一种世界观,在这种世界观中,政策制定者可以简单地忽略构成全球水环境很大一部分的大型池塘网络。)”提出一个论点“政策制定者可以简单地忽略构成全球水环境很大一部分的大型池塘网络”,然后用“In Europe, for example, the Water Framework Directive mostly excludes any bodies of water smaller than 50 hectares.(例如,在欧洲,《水框架指令》大多排除了任何小于50公顷的水体。)” 根据文章末尾段落内容“However, if we want to make use of the biodiversity power that ponds offer, there remains much to do.(然而,如果我们想要利用池塘提供的生物多样性力量,还有很多事情要做。)” 故选A项。 D Everyone looks forward to progress, whether in one’s personal life or in the general society. When we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new “past” is created. D. People’s attitude decides the use of technology. C 13. C 14. C 15. 根据第四段“However, progress has allowed tradition to keep up. It is only with progress and the invention of new technology that many old products can be brought back to their old state. New technology is required for old products to stay old. 根据最后一段“It is people’s attitude towards progress that causes the type of influence that technology has on society. Technology is flexible. There is no fixed way of making use of it. Everything depends on people’s attitude. When we accept progress and adapt it to suit our needs, a new ‘past’ is created. Ways to protect your personal information online It’s hard to scan the news without hearing about a major data leakage, potentially exposing millions of customers’ personal data to criminals. ____16____.
