Carmen had always dreamed of being on stage. She was excited when she got her first big break with a part in the school play. She would play a part of the doctor. She would wear long, white doctor’s coat and carry a big bag that held a newspaper with blank (空白的) pages and a box of bandages. Carmen would say some lines. She would do some funny acts and try to make her friends laugh. She could hardly wait to act in a real play on stage.
As the play came closer, Carmen began to worry about being on stage. She just couldn’t remember her lines. She sat in her bedroom, saying the lines over and over again. They just wouldn’t stick in her head. It would be terrible if she forgot her lines on stage. She thought for a long time and decided to quit the play. She still wanted to be in the play, but she didn’t want to risk making a fool of herself on stage.
Carmen walked into the kitchen and said she wouldn’t be in the play. “Don’t worry so much”, Carmen’s father said. “You’re a talented young girl. You are a natural performer.” “Yes,” her mother agreed, “You’ll do better if you relax.”
Carmen knew they were right, but she couldn’t stop worrying. Suddenly, she had a great idea. She took out the newspaper and wrote all of her lines on the blank pages. Now she could look at the newspaper and no one would know she was reading her lines. This would help her relax. That day, Carmen went on stage. She said her first line. Then she said her next line. Carmen didn’t look at the newspaper once. Remembering her lines was easy because she was relaxed.
As a result, Carmen remembered everything. After the play, Carmen let out a long deep breath and smiled happily. Carmen’s parents went backstage, they rushed over to congratulate her on a job well done.

The Return of the horse
Once upon a time, early horses travelled around the Americas. Then they left on a journey that took them around the world—and back again. 55 million years ago, a tiny horse called Hyracotherium ate happily on bushes in the woods of North America. It didn’t look much like a horse, really. It was about the size of a dog and looked more like a three-toed deer.
Gradually, the land began to change. Less rain fell. Forests changed to grassland. The family of little Hyracotherium grew into many different kinds. Some got bigger and began to eat grass. They spread out all over North and South America, living on the broad grasslands and mountains and in the forests and deserts.
One day, around five million years ago, some early horses living in Alaska travelled a bit farther west than usual. Back then, a solid land connected Alaska and Siberia. They walked straight across it and on into Asia. Other bands followed, including the ancestors(祖先) of the modern horse. This family, called Equus, liked Asia just fine. There was lots of tasty grass and plenty of room to run. Some stayed in Asia, while others travelled farther west, into the Middle East, Europe, and all the way to Africa, where their descendants(后代) became zebras and donkeys.
Meanwhile, back in America, life became hard for horses. By about 10,000 years ago, no horses of any kind were left in North or South America. But on the other side of the world, horses thrived. They met up with some strange, two-legged creatures who seemed to like riding on their backs. In 1492, Spanish explorers set sail to find a western route to India and ran into America instead. On their second trip, they brought along some horses. These creatures surprised the native Americans, who had never seen such an animal before.
But the horses felt right at home in the New World. And no wonder! They were home-returning to the grassy plains(平原) where their ancestors started out so long ago.
33.Which of the following would Hyracotherium most probably look like?
A. B. C. D.
34.In the map, which shows the correct route of how the horses move through history?

When everyone in China is getting ready for the traditional Chinese New Year, a Chinese AI app is shining around the world. The Chinese artificial intelligence (Al) app DeepSeek became the most downloaded free app on the Apple App Store worldwide, followed by ChatGPT from Open AI, Gemini from Google, and Llama 2 from Meta.
With this success, stocks (股票) related to DeepSeek rose quickly on Monday, with many starting the day more than 10 percent higher. It is believed to bring a big red envelope to shareholders. In January 2025, the Chinese AI company DeepSeek introduced its new open source model, DeepSeekR1. It is reported that this model made an important breakthrough (突破) by using deep learning techniques (技术) that let the AI develop reasoning (推理) skills on its own. As a result, in tasks such as math, coding, and language reasoning, the model works as well as the top models from big companies like Open AI, and in some fields, it even outperforms the world’s best apps.
What impresses the world most is that the developers used less powerful chips than those used by leading competitors (竞争者). Moreover, both the number of chips and the number of developers on the team are lower than those of industry leaders. This means that the cost for users will be lower than that offered by other competitors.
The app quickly attracted global (全球的) attention. People in Silicon Valley started wondering how its developers almost caught up with American rivals (对手) Marc Andersen, a well-known investor in Silicon Valley, said on X (Twitter), “DeepSeekR1 is one of the most amazing and impressive breakthroughs. I’ve ever seen.”
DeepSeek means a lot to China and its AI industry. It marks the rise of Chinese large models on the global stage. However, with this progress come new challenges. The rapid development of such powerful technology has also attracted criticism (批判) from abroad, including cyber (网络) attacks and other forms of unfriendly behavior.
37.What is the main idea of the second paragraph?
A.The introduction of DeepSeekR1 and its breakthroughs.
B.The comparison between DeepSeek and other apps.
C.The reason why DeepSeek became popular.
D.The way DeepSeekR1 uses deep-learning techniques.
38.Why does the writer mention Marc Andersen?
A.To introduce the famous Silicon Valley investor Marc Andersen.
B.To suggest that American investors are worried about Chinese AI technology.
C.To prove that DeepSeek is the most downloaded app in the world.
D.To compare the achievements of AI at home and abroad.
39.What can we learn from the passage?
A.DeepSeek became the most downloaded paid app on the Apple App Store worldwide.
B.DeepSeekR1 didn’t make any breakthrough.
C.The developers of DeepSeek used less powerful chips and had fewer developers on the team.
D.Stocks related to DeepSeek fell quickly on Monday.

In a recent report, scientists pointed out a killer that is more terrible than smoking—an unhealthy diet. 41 After studying the causes, the scientists say that the unhealthy diet leads to more than 11 million preventable (可预防的) deaths every year.
42 But the main part of the problem is what people are not eating, such as seeds, nuts, fruit and vegetables. The scientists study what people eat in 195 countries and how it influences their health. Israel is the healthiest country. India is one of the countries that are close to the unhealthy end.
So, why aren’t people eating enough of the right things? For about 1 billion people, the answer is that they are not eating enough of anything. 43 But for about 2 billion other people, the problem is the opposite—they become unhealthy with high intake of sugar, salt and meat.
The scientists point out that it doesn’t seem to help much to tell people what not to eat. 44
But if everyone in the world suddenly begins eating seeds, nuts, and so on, they will soon run out. This could also be a problem. So the scientists say governments can’t just encourage people to eat healthily. 45
A.So, they encourage people to pay attention to what they should eat.
B.Part of the problem is what people are eating, like meat, salt and sugar.
