When Mike Coots was 18, he lost his leg to a shark bite. It was near his home on the island of Kauai—a typical fall morning with friends. The waves were really good. Suddenly a large shark came right up under Mike and sank his teeth into Mike's lower leg and Mike felt no pain.
As he struggled (挣扎), the shark bit down harder. He beat the shark in the face again and again until the shark let him go. As Mike swam back into shore he realized the shark had bit his lower right leg off. Mike's friends rushed to his aid. The doctors later told Mike that's probably what kept him alive during the drive to the hospital.
As soon as Mike was given the OK by his doctors, he started riding the waves again. In fact, his first time back was near the site of his attack. Mike was unshaken. He was curious—why was he attacked?
His curiosity led him to research sharks, and while he never figured out why he became a target, Mike did learn something that would change his life: Humans are far more dangerous to sharks than the other way around. “I watched a documentary, and I learned about the fact that 70 million sharks a year are killed for their fins (鳍) alone.”
He began working with the Hawaii state government to help pass a ban on sharkderived products. He also likes using his photos to spread the message about what's happening to sharks and why it matters. “Sharks are here on earth for a very important reason, holding together the web of biodiversity, and without them, our seas cannot survive.”

Teaching your kids to love nature
There are many things that parents and teachers can do to help children develop love for nature.
Start young
If you love nature yourself, it is very easy to develop this love in your children. __1__. Encourage them to play in the garden. Let them pick up and observe leaves, flowers, rocks, etc. Point out trees, insects, birds, and animals to them.
__2__
A great way to help children connect them with nature is to get them to help in the garden. This will bring them in touch with the soil and they will see different kinds of insects, worms, and other creatures. Caring for plants, and seeing them grow and develop, are a wonderful opportunity for them to know the cycle of nature first hand.
Take them into the wild
__3__. Plan regular picnics and outings to nature spots around your city. Introduce them to the joys of hiking. Spend vacations visiting national parks, where children can see wild animals in their natural environment.
Arouse (激发) their curiosity
__4__. Give them books or CDs about nature and wildlife. Take them along to museums or libraries. Better still, get them membership of a nature organization such as the Bombay Natural History Society or the World Wildlife Fund for Nature. Encourage them to participate in the field trips and other activities organized by them.
Teach them to conserve (保护)
__5__. Encourage them to adopt conservation (保护) practices. More importantly, practice them yourself. Explain to children how small things like using water carefully and keeping lights switched off when they do not need them can contribute to conserving nature.
Getting your children to cherish (爱护) nature will not just help them become responsible citizens, but will even better protect our home planet, the Earth.
A.Let them help in the garden
B.Grow fruit trees in the backyard
C.Make trips to the wild with your children regularly

E.Encourage your children to observe things around them
F.Children are naturally curious about things around them

课时作业(九)
Ⅰ 阅读
Yao Ming was born in Shanghai in 1980. At 229 centimeters, he was the third tallest player in NBA history. Yao made his first appearance in the NBA during the 2,000 Sydney Olympics. He surprised many critics with his first games, and was fast becoming an international fan favorite, as he broke Michael Jordan's record for votes (投票) received. In July 2011 Yao announced his retirement from the NBA due to frequent problems in his left foot.
He continuously works to raise awareness of endangered species and even went as far as to stop using shark fin soup at his wedding in 2007. Yao has been saying no to shark fin soup since 2006 when he was appointed Goodwill Ambassador (亲善大使) for wildlife protection. “Sharks are friends of human beings. They are not our food.” Since his retirement he has become a surprise international force in the field of wildlife protection, and he is using his fame to tell us the difficulties faced by sharks.
Most recently he went to Houston Zoo, as part of his continuing effort to educate young people about the importance of wildlife protection. He is part of a large campaign (运动) by the wildlife protection charity WildAid, and has traveled through Africa to see and document the difficulties facing elephants and rhinoceros in the wild. With elephant and rhinoceros poaching (偷猎) on the rise, Yao also said, “When the buying stops, the killing can too. Get rid of the demand for rhino horn and ivory right at the source. That's what I want to do.”
Although Yao is not the first Chinese player in the NBA, it could be argued that he is the most important one, not just for his taking part in charity and wildlife protection work. He built a bridge between two completely different worlds and introduced millions to the Chinese way of life, and the American lifestyle separately.

Located halfway up the Italy's Apennine Mountain, about 100 miles northeast of Rome, the Hotel Rigopiano has never been easy to reach. But its isolation (隔绝) only adds to its appeal, attracting a great number of tourists.
Snow began to fall across the Apennines in January and lasted for days. From his home in the Rome suburbs, Matrone watched the weather with concern. He and his wife, Cicioni, had planned an overnight getaway to the hotel. But now he wondered whether they should go. After phoning the hotel, they decided to make the trip. By the time they neared the hotel six hours later, they were battling a snowstorm. When they finally arrived, they were both cold and exhausted. They checked into their room and went to bed early.
As they awoke the next day, they discovered that their difficulty had worsened overnight. The cars in the parking lot were invisible. The phone and power lines were down. They were having breakfast when the hotel began to shake. An earthquake with a magnitude (震级) of 5.7 had struck the mountain. “Get out of here!” Matrone shouted to his wife. They headed quickly to the parking lot, where others were digging their cars. Fifteen minutes after the first earthquake, another quake hit, this one measuring 5.6.
With a dozen vehicles freed by noon, the guests set off down the driveway. But when they reached the main road, the path was blocked by a sixfoothigh wall of snow. Matrone climbed out of his car and investigated it. There was no road in sight, “We're trapped!” He told his wife. So they had no choice but to make their way back to the hotel.
As it was getting dark, they managed to be back. That was when the snow on the mountain began to slide. They heard the avalanche (雪崩) before they saw it. The avalanche gathered speed and size, grabbing rocks and trees and anything else in its way down the mountain, tearing the hotel from its foundation. When the avalanche came to a stop, those caught inside the hotel were left buried in the icy rocks and ruins.
注意:
1.续写的词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
When Matrone came to himself, he was stuck in the darkness.
It was not until the next morning that the rescuers finally arrived.
写前导读:本文是一篇记叙文。Matrone(马罗尼)和他的妻子Cicioni(西西奥尼)住在位于意大利亚平宁山脉的一个酒店。在那里,他们遇到了地震和暴风雪,被困在坍塌的酒店,会发生什么事情?他们会不会得救呢?
[精彩范文]
When Matrone came to himself, he was stuck in the darkness. Lying on his stomach, he realized with horror that he was under something heavy and couldn't move at all. “Cicioni! Cicioni!” He called, but there was no response. He could hear nothing of what was happening at the surface. The whole world was dead still. What he had to face was a terrible reality—they were buried alive. Despair washed over him. He asked himself again and again, “Who is going to save us?”
It was not until the next morning that the rescuers finally arrived. Without any hesitation they got down to detecting the remains of the hotel and they were delighted to discover there was sign of life beneath. With great efforts they removed the thick snow and began cutting the roof. Then they carefully lowered themselves through the hole they'd made. Suddenly, they heard someone crying for help in a weak voice. It was Matrone. Later all the survivors were rescued including Matrone's wife. The couple felt really lucky to be still alive!
