Dr. Wu Lien-teh, face mask
[2021-2022 山西省大原市高一下月考]If you visited Google's search box page on March 10, you
might have found a lot honouring an Asian man in a white coat who appeared to be making and
distributing face masks. The man, as my friend Ling Woo Liu told me over email, was her great-
grandfather: Chinese-Malaysian epidemiologist (流行病学家) Dr. Wu Lien-teh.
Dr. Wu is not a household name in the United States, or even in China. But he should be, especially
now. The breakthrough he made saved millons of lives, and he established many of the basic public
health procedures and innovations that have been used around the world to fight pandemics ever since-
work for which he received a nomination(提名) for the Nobel Prize in Phvsiology or Medicine
Dr. Wu grew up in what is now a part of Malaysia. His family was from China, so when he was
accepted to the University of Cambridge in 1896 with a Oueen's Scholarship, he became the first medical
student of Chinese family origin in the university's history. He quickly made a name for himself, winning
a number of awards, which allowed him to go to different European cities for research. In 19o7, Dr. Wu
and his family moved to China, and became director of the Army Medical College in Tianjin the
following year.
When news of a deadly pneumonic plague (肺鼠疫) reached Beijing in 1910. Dr. Wu was asked to
go and help stop the rapid spread. The pandemic had already led to more than 60, ooo deaths, killing
99. 9 per cent of its patients in just four months. After arriving in Harbin-the center of the plague-
Dr. Wu conducted a series of examinations on a dead body of the disease, and discovered that the
pneumonic plague was transmitted through the air, and not as assumed before, by insect bites.
The one-laver face mask was already being widely used as a way to prevent doctors from accidentally
being harmed by the open wounds of their patients. Dr. Wu quickly set to work adding air-filtering laver
to the mask. The new version would be able to absorb pathogens(病原体) before they could be breathed
in by medical workers. His invention was recognised as the origin of the N95 mask, the personal
protective equipment most commonly used today

[2021-2022 浙江省杭州市高一下期末]Being a relatively new technology,VR technology is clearly
just beginning to take off. There are companies producing their own VR headsets, but they are still not as
big as other products that are meant to entertain. Apart from the limited choices, one more thing that is
worth noting about the current state of VR is the fact that content is limited. as well as applications. Most
of the products available on the market today are aimed at gamers and mostly special for high-end buyer
because of their expensive price.
Despite being full of potential. however, there are also some challenges that should be dealt with in
order to ensure the success of VR. Among others, one of the most significant would be the need for
powerful devices that would complement the headsets. For Oculus Rift, for instance, a powerful videc
card is needed for a computer, something you might not have at home, making the VR technolog
inapplicable.
In addition, there are also challenges when it comes to beauty. Today's VR headsets look almost
entirely the same-they are huge and heavy and they look silly. Producers must find a way in order to
make the design more beautiful.
Producers will also be challenged to make VR headsets more affordable so that more people will be

able to purchase them. Most of the models currently available are just too expensive for average buvers.
Lastly, and perhaps most importantly, the challenge is to find more applications. It is currently
being centered on game paste applications. Producers are challenged to come up with creative ways in
order to increase the usefulness of such a promising device.
In sum, while it is undeniable that VR is big in today's time, there's a lot of room for improvement.
There are limited choices when it comes to VR products available on the market, and for many. it is still
a bit expensive. Others lack knowledge of how it works, which results in hesitation. There are also some
problems that have yet to be solved and more opportunities to be uncovered. It would be safe to say that it
is new, still in its infancy, but hopefully it is getting to the top.
4. What is needed for your computer when you use Oculus Rift?
A. A useful videotape
B. A powerful video card.
C. A powerful video camera.
D. A useful video phone.
5. What is the biggest challenge of VR?
A. To lower its price.
B. To simplify its headset.
C. To widen its application.
D. To beautify its appearance.
6. What is the author's attitude towards the future of VR?
A. Worried.
B. Concerned.
